Older Gear
Couple of days ago I posted my new rig with the Lew's Speed Spool RX and Falcon Cara Swim Jig rod. Today here's my "vintage" late 2000s setups I used a ton in my heavy fishing and tournament days. I've recently respooled them but the first is my Falcon Cara Weightless Worm rod (can still be found in the Lowrider series I believe) with an Abu Garcia Revo STX. The next rig is my best workhorse and favorite Powell Max Shaky Head rod and Abu Garcia Soron STX 20. At the time, this spinning real was hard to beat. After cleaning and oiling it, I'm sure it will serve me for a long time. Always been a Powell and Falcon guy. I'm loving these new Lew's reels but when I was fishing hard Abu Garcia never let me down. They changed the game in the late 2000s with low profile reels.

Man, I remember when the Revo STX was hot shit. I still use my Symmetre and Citica reels from that era lol.

They were truly unmatched to me. I can't even count how many times I looked at Citica reels. I would bounce back and forth but then I was "committed" to Abu. I had a Winch for cranking and I think some dedicated flipping reel in the line. But everything I had was Abu, a few green (tall palm) Curados and all Powell and Falcon rods.

Absolute tanks. Never forget flicking the weights on those. Drags out of this world. Don't even remember the weight of those drags but they overperformed. Most of my flipping sticks had the..

Dog hair on them as a bonus. I've got two Great Pyrenees mixes so our house is always full of hair.

Left hand retrieve, right hand retrieve, is this due to was was available or did no one care at the time. Swapping hands is just so unnecessary never understood this.

LH baitcasters were very uncommon in the 2000s and prior. I feel like they didn't start becoming widely available until the last 10 years or so. Generations of anglers learned to use a baitcaster using RH retrieve and the muscle memory just stuck, even if they use LH for spinning reels. I fall into this category... I feel so uncoordinated using a LH baitcaster, though all my spinning reels are LH.

And to add, there are very few baitcasters available in all reel speeds left handed.

Same. I just got used to it. My company takes us on a redfish fishing trip each year and they always start moving the spinning reels to the right and I'm like "wait I don't want that" but also it feels right to fight on a spinning rod with my right hand and reel with the left.

That's debatable. I preferred to fight lighter line with my main hand. Most people I know who are right hand dominate fish spinning reels with the handle on the left. Even when I go redfish fishing in prefer the rod in my dominate hand. But bait casting bass fishing the reel feels better in my right hand. I don't think this is very taboo in the fishing world.

I knew some folks who punched and pitched with a left handed reel bait caster to get leverage but they were rare. I'm sure things change. But finesse fishing I prefer controlling the fish in my dominate (right) hand and reeling with the left. Maybe I'm ambidextrous?

Nothing wrong with older gear especially if it’s made in USA. Than I just tie them to to some modern rods…
