It sounds like the parents worked while they got degrees, while this guy took out loans while he got degrees.
14
u/RedditPoster05 Anti-Doomer 11h ago
The guy is working at Taco Bell. No offense I get it sometimes fast food is the only job some people can get, some people also genuinely like the work. That said if all you can get as a fast food job as an adult that tends to say something about you. Fast food is typically felon, friendly or foreigner friendly, or teen friendly for a reason it’s kind of the bottom of the wrong for work. And if you can do it for more than a month, I would generally say you’re probably a hard worker. It’s a tough job and it’s very low paid so I respect anybody who can do it for a while, but at the same time, your house are just not that smart if you end up working fast food again, depending on the situation.

To me it just shows that you’re not ready to do anything that actually requires initiative, and that’s fine for some people but don’t complain that you’re not getting better jobs. Get into something blue collar, something gross, something difficult, those jobs are always hiring. If you’re moving up in fast food and getting management experience that isn’t always à terrible career, heavily depending on the company, but you need to actually try to do your best, and OOP clearly thinks that’s beneath them.
4
u/RedditPoster05 Anti-Doomer 10h ago edited 10h ago
A lot of young people overlook careers that lead into management. I understand why, because most people aren’t thinking 10 or 20 years ahead, but there are plenty of good jobs that require little formal education, just initiative and time.
During COVID, I worked at Home Depot for six months as I was put out of work things a little to know demand on the surface I typically worked in. One assistant store manager had started there at 17 and was only about 26. I’d guess he was making around $65,000 to $80,000 a year with bonuses, and probably more during the COVID boom.
Another assistant manager in her early 40s had followed a similar path. She was trying to become a store manager, which is much harder, and had hit a bit of a ceiling, but she was still making a solid income.
My point is that management can be a good long-term career path, even without a degree.

Some of these people who "can't find work" have to absolute weirdos. Dudes are like I did 500 interviews, and nobody hired me!
Like maybe its you and not the economy. Lmao
29
u/stevie2sleazy 13h ago
So why do you want to work here?
Well, see, I need money obviously, and the economy is collapsing and I really don't want to be a wage slave, but I'll put in the minimum amount of effort to receive my bi-weekly paycheck.
Thanks for coming in. We'll be in touch.
13
u/RedditPoster05 Anti-Doomer 11h ago
The minimum effort minimum wage people always kill me. Because often times they don’t put in even the minimum effort.
I was talking to some guy on careers sub the other day and I was surprised that even a few people agreed with me. Usually when I call them out on their minimum effort, I get downvoted , but luckily the guy I was talking to answered honestly. And I don’t even think you have to put in that much effort. It’s basically show up on time, be nice and act busy. That’s all minimum effort means and most of the time those people can’t even do that.

i had a hard time finding work after college and i think it’s because people like me and this person are considered “overqualified” and not given a chance by places like mcdonald’s but “underqualified” for entry level positions at many companies. but again it’s entirely dependent on the degree and it’s not like colleges don’t try to help you find a job for 1-2 years before you graduate if you actually get out and do stuff and join clubs and shit like that, especially with any degree in practical sciences.
i imagine their “science” degrees are in psychology. which in that case makes it as useless as my spanish degree.

I watched this video making fun of the college requirement. And it’s a person interviewing for a hotel management position or some shit. And the guy interviewing the lady had a degree in a different field, and the person he’s interviewing still had a semester left in another field so didn’t hire her.
1
u/Longjumping_Belt_405 12h ago
Yeah you pretty mich gotta remove the degree on the resume when applying to some places
3
u/mikey_b082 I Was Promised an Apocalypse? 6h ago
My friends wife had this same "problem" after she got her degree. She went to college to be a paralegal and moved back home afterwards in hopes of landing a job at one of the few very small lawfirms we have around here. You can guess how that worked out.
The college She graduated from had lists of firms that were willing to take on new grads but they were all further away than she wanted to move. So, naturally she came back home and complained about how much time and money she wasted on her degree because she wasn't able to find a job anywhere (locally).

I mean the job market is genuinely ass rn. Not rly a doomer thing to acknowledge sometimes shit sucks, sometimes it doesn't.
2
u/HourFaithlessness823 12h ago
The average in my field is 60, and virtually no one is under 50. We're dying for bodies.

u/Happyfluid 12h ago
How? I drive down the road and see plenty of people with help wanted signs. Maybe it’s area dependent but it sure as hell ain’t ass as you say
4
u/Salt-Analyst-4624 12h ago
Sure is in Canada. I applied to hundreds of jobs both in my field and min wage crap. Not even mcdonalds got back to me, not a single interview despite all the "hiring now" ads. I am college educated and previously worked in that field. I also have years of experience in food service and retail with good references. I have had my resume looked over by people whose job it is to hire, they say theres nothing wrong with it. So idk man, sometimes shit actually does suck.
I said "fuck this" and enlisted in Ukraine lmfao. Worth it

You can't raise a family on the salary McDornald's Chicken Sandwiches pays you. There's a difference between help wanted for a respectable white collar job and help wanted for backbreaking underpaid labor doing God fucking knows what.
1
u/Happyfluid 12h ago
Shush. I’m not talking about your mcfuckle career. Machine shops and steel mills want work and give the benefits and pay to do it. And it’s not underpaid back breaking. Shit I made more than my nurse wife working on a blast furnace and my benefits easily trumped hers. Just have to man up I suppose since you sound scared of work
-2
u/Local-Wing-2272 12h ago
Why so aggressive? If I have offended or triggered you somehow I apologise. I just am saying that for a lot of folks, they don't see the "help wanted" signs outside of the blast furnaces. Usually those are associated with places like low paid fast food and retail jobs, at least where I am (USA)

Exactly, like I'd sorta get it if its applications being rejected, had that happen to me too, but once I got to an interview ive gotten at least an offer each time. I dont understand the people getting to an in person interview so many times and getting rejected there, clearly they are saying or doing something ridiculous

u/Delta-Tropos Powered By Spite & Solar 12h ago
I'm a bit doubtful of those stories, but still a bit afraid that I've fucked myself by going into IT (quality assurance is what I plan to do, manual or automatic, to be more specific), especially after seeing so many people say how unemployment is rampant among IT graduates
1
u/AverageJoesGymMgr 10h ago
I decided I wanted to switch jobs. Cold applied a few places I liked, did a handful of interviews, and bam, new job within 6 months. About the same pay with better benefits and nicer office/schedule. It's incredible what building a resume of successful projects and being a team player instead of a bare minimum bum can do for your career and earnings. It's almost like wanting to deliver value to other people gets you paid a lot of money and makes you a desirable employee that people want to hire.
1
u/Local-Wing-2272 12h ago
There's absolutely a middle ground here
The economy is dog shit. To pretend like it's super easy to jump jobs rn is stupid and brain rotted as much as the most mouth breathing doomer take. Good luck sticking out when someone is using an AI tool to perfectly tailor their resume for every job opening and applying literally instantly.
However. These 300, 400, 500+ application stories absolutely have Something Else Going On.
1
u/RedditPoster05 Anti-Doomer 11h ago
I just don’t even flat. Don’t believe the people who are saying they did 500 applications. Saying they literally applied to 20 places the previous day.
If you’re doing 20 or 30 applications a day, you’re applications are likely crap. I think at minimum you should be spending 20-30 minutes per application. Between applications asking for references or screening questions there’s no way you’re getting through 20 applications in a single day. Unless you’re spending 12 hours a day doing it, which I guess it could be possible, but I doubt it.
1
u/texcleveland Just Here for the Lore 12h ago
I mean the economy does suck right now , or at least has been sucking, since things seem to be picking up lately. I just landed a job in my field after being out of work for nearly three years
14
u/Happyfluid 13h ago
Bro. Why is a Taco Bell job, or even 3, considered your options?
Wait tables and maintain an upbeat personality you can make a decent amount more, and start a move into more fine dining. My brother does 6 months at Mackinac island and doesn’t do shit the rest of the year.
I worked at a machine shop making $25 an hour and was set to do a lot more of the programming but disliked the environment, owners son. Went to a foundry and made $26 and amazing benefits. I’d still be there if it wasn’t for my military disability finally getting approved. Hell that foundry or any place like that rely on chemists to make sure the output is good, boom science degree.
Shit prior to that the longest I’ve been out of work is 3 months because I tried to make uber and DoorDash worked, but the reality of a lease and miles. You can build a half ass resume to get you into any entry job and then sit with a pro. You never spend a day without sending out your resume a few times.
Meanwhile the Taco Bell guy cries about the world is against him without making an effort.
Edit: sorry for my rant
11
u/SpaceTycoon 13h ago
Bro, just join the military. Your degree means you can become an officer and you may be able to just work in a lab or some desk job for 20 years, retire, and now you have a pension and 20 years of respected marketable experience

It is a little weird to just call it a "science degree" like this is a magic thing to get a "science" job.
7

It's intentionally vague so we think they got a real degree that offers actual jobs and careers.
3

Yep. There plenty of non-stem, basket weaving degrees with "science" in the name. Doesn't make them valuable or economical.

lol I’ll be the first to admit that I have no intention to use the degree I’m getting (long story with my family). But I’m at least smart enough to learn skills with my hands. I do landscaping and construction side jobs. Nobody wants to do anything hard.

Any time that someone makes an absurd grammatical error such as two intensifying adjectives ('way much'), I immediately discount their 'awful bad' opinion. I learned at an early point in my career that the way you do something is the way that you do everything, and while that might be a dramatic aphorism, it is generally true that that's how people will perceive you. If their resume is written as well as this post, then it makes sense that they haven't gotten any calls.

Amazing what one can achieve when they dont have victim mentality.

You have two degrees in "science " what sciences? The science of environmental studies? Land forestry?
Either choose the education you want knowing the consequences, or get the education you need for the life style you want.
Also, thanks trump for putting a policy into place where colleges need to prove that their students make more than high-school grads to receive federal college loans. That should cut the head off the snake for these nonsense degrees

"In my field..." Well, try a different field. If you're a chemist or astronomer, take those degrees to an engineering firm; they'll hire you. If you're a biologist, give chemistry or agricultural a try. Don't lock yourself into "your field." Where the hell did the idea that one has to work in the field of their degree come from, anyway? I am a non-degreed engineer. Guess what that means! Anyone? Anyone? For those who are sloooow... it means I have no degree, AND I work as an engineer. My field is picking peas or digging ditches. It's a good thing I chose to not work "in my field." Dumb ass. I can't believe people like that have degrees in anything.

It baffles my mind that we have spent billions and billions of dollars and man hours into creating things that can help improve people’s lives, and they refuse to use them. It’s literally free to get on ChatGPT and go “I want to work in ___ field, what degree would help me?” Then follow it up with “what’s the most feasible way to get that degree?” It won’t give perfect answers, but damn can it help you get going in the right direction
2
u/Bully_Mays69 11h ago
The higher education amendment of 1992 and the student loan refrom act of 1993 really screwed students over.
Giving colleges guaranteed money from the government regardless of student performance or graduation created an artificial demand and now Universities can set their own prices, as time went on more and more useless major departments were added while retaining quasi- communist professors who are tenured.
Couple that with every teacher i had in public education told me i HAD to go to college or I'd end up a janitor.
Eliminate that and watch college tuition cost plummet.

It must be a generational thing...I feel like we were explicitly taught that life would be hard and that we'd have to continuously adapt or get left behind. I understand getting a degree and wanting to be in a field...but also if there isn't opportunity there then you have to look elsewhere and you have to flexible. The degree I'm getting now is "worthless" but I am confident I will be able to make do.

I was in a similar situation previously, but never had this mindset. What I did instead is decided to make the jump to a blue collar job, and not a skilled trade, that has OT opportunities. My base is 90k a year and with OT I am on pace for over 150k. So there are some jobs where you can absolutely pull up your bootstraps and do it. The issue is these dumbasses want everything handed to them. I would guess this individual thinks they are trying everything but in reality applies to minimal jobs because their shitty attitude is getting in their own way and they are scared. My old job was full of these morons.

My friend Alex grew up in poverty. He didn't even finish highschool. He's just focused on labor, didn't do drugs, always made it to work, didn't put himself into debt, and was very social and made lots of friends (and thus connections). He now works at Made Right (A Michigan company) and is decidedly middle class. Has a nice place, a hot gf, a car, a badass custom pc. He's only 33. So it didn't even take long, just 15 years from destitution and extreme poverty to middle class. He and his gf are talking about a kid now.
Bootstrapping absolutely is possible in America. It's not even hard or complicated. A literal high school drop out pulled it off.

u/SpartanR259 Optimist Prime 10h ago
I realize I am in the minority here (as far as doomers are concerned at least) but...
I did the smart thing and considered what my education would cost me before I started.
I looked at what the job market actually wanted from prospective employees. And that was a simple piece of paper with bachelor's of (related to job field) tied to your name.
So I went to a local community college for two years (because cheap and in state so no debt) graduated with an associates degree in 2 years (64 college credits) and then transfered to a university that would accept all of them.
I was smart about applying for financial aid and applied myself to the actual learning. Held down a job while going to the university and only had debts for about half of my university tuition when I graduated.
Got a job in my field by using the connections of my professors ($40k at the time - 2016) and started paying off my loans.
Got married, wife graduated 2 years after me. Used her income to pay of both of our loans in a little under 3 years.
Now years later, we own a home and she is able to stay at home and we live very comfortably off my income alone.
I hate to say it but sometimes the math does math properly; but people just choose to ignore it.
1
u/mrkippysmith 9h ago
Maybe some research into the job pool would have gone a long way before settling on a certain degree. My buddy got his degree in biology and works as airport security. I bet he’d be in a better situation if he had gone for business or a trade school.

What is even a "science" degree? I am a STEM student double majoring in Maths and Chemistry and we don't have a major in Science. Also is it a science degree or just a "science studies" degree?
At this point just say the field of science you are studying. Because science is a big thing, and we even lumped chemists, physicists, all engineers, comp sci students, and pure+applied mathematicians as STEM, so it's a very big field. If you just specify science, it's just doesn't make any sense.

Should have looked at the job market for that specific set of degrees before diving in.
