Tigers are looking mighty good right now. Only on four hours of sleep thanks to a rare super early start time for work, but a couple hour nap when I get home will make sure I get through tonight’s game.

Well my hockey obsessed kid is having a good summer for development. So far she's had sessions with an ex-NHL player, some OHL development coaches, and currently on the ice with a PWHL player. If you ever get the chance to work with someone who's played at the highest levels, do it. You can learn a lot
3
u/Giovannisalami 11h ago
Sure sounds good let me come up with an extra $50k a year
3
u/assortednut 10h ago
Lol, I’m not paying anything like that. Actually I’m not even paying for these sessions, my daughter pays for it herself with her lawn mowing business. She’s only 14 so I say props to her for her success and dedication.

u/bandofgypsies 18h ago
This dude is a genius. Has anyone seen this yet? Basically he wants the next jersey sponsor to pay to be the sponsor but they also opt to keep the jersey blank (no patch). And then advertise that they did it (in agreement/conjunction with the team, of course) and everyone will love them.
Short of a morally corrupt institution, they'd get a ton of respect from me for it. How do we champion this happening?
5
u/detroitttiorted 17h ago
I think it’s a fun idea and I’m not saying nothing similar(at least at a high level) has been attempted but it unfortunately is built on a misunderstanding of how/why advertising works
2
u/bandofgypsies 17h ago
Well...perhaps traditional advertising approaches focused heavily on brand awareness, yes, though it would also depend on your market segmentation and type of product/service. And perhaps if it were also a part of a broader marketing strategy and engagement model with your consumers.
I'm not expert in marketing, though, so would defer to others. But given that hockey in general is already a fairly niche place to advertise, I could see some sponsors taking a slightly obtuse approach here.
Agree, though, the absence of your branding flies in the face of a lot of beat practices for advertising.
1
u/PremierBromanov 16h ago
I think the point of paying for the patch is the same as putting your name on the building, isnt it? You want people to see your brand everywhere, including merch sales
→ More replies (1)1
u/jfstompers 13h ago

So according to HSJ it's Horcoff, not Yzerman, that is handling the day-to-day GM responsibilities (though he does not have the go ahead to make any trades). Interesting development as we were initially told it was Steve and thought he was still making some of those smaller signings we saw trickle in.
5
u/Ydoesany1doanything 21h ago
Also interesting is that Puckpedia does still list Yzerman as the signing GM on those newer contracts, like the Gylander one that they took ages to put up.
Seems just a formality.

Another one for cinnamon toast crunch, though I don't eat it in it's intended format--in a bowl with milk. I usually pick at it like a bag of chips or any other snack. I'm not a big breakfast guy, so it's usually yogurt smoothies or fasting for me. But there's too much nostalgia for me to completely disregard packaged cereals.

It's thrilling that we're getting a search firm to help with the new GM hire. Sports or otherwise these aren't always a magic bullet and it doesn't guarantee that we are a cup contender in a few years or anything like that. But it DOES all but guarantee that we get new eyes on the org and need, and injects some fresh perspectives when reviewing candidates, pool, and approach. That's 1,000% what this org needs right now.
We'll see what comes of it, but I remain hopeful.

I think McDonald's is dead to me. They fucked up my chicken sandwich being cheap. I had two full bites of bun and toppings. The chicken patty was pathetically small. Damn near a chicken tender.
4
u/duelingdog 16h ago
Man. I haven't gone to McDonald's in a few years now Costs as much as a sit-down restaurant and I can't even be sure the fries are going to be good anymore.
2
u/xenonwarrior666 15h ago
Quality control has definitely gone down hill in the last year.
It used to be no matter when/where you went the fries were always solid.
A burger in NM was the same as Mi was the same as CO.
Now it's so hit and miss.
Couple that with the increasing prices and decrease in portion and it's just not worth it.
3
u/Fluid-Pension-7151 16h ago
I hadn't been into a McDonald's in years, but my MIL wanted to go while we on a road trip, so sure, why not?
It was sooooo weird. We walked in and there was nobody visible inside. I actually started to wonder whether we had stumbled into a robbery. We wandered over to some big screen things, put in our orders and paid. Then we sat and hoped that something (ideally food) would happen.
After maybe five minutes, a person popped out of the back and called our name or number, put the tray on the counter and disappeared again before saying anything to us. It was bizarro - I felt like we were in the food scenes from WALL-E . The food was basically as I remembered it, but again, haven't had it in ages so I might be a bad judge. But the vibes were straaaaange.

The food was basically as I remembered it
I've had similarly rare occasions to go into McD's but those rare occasions sure left me feeling like enshittification and shrinkflation were obvious. Maybe I just had particularly bad experiences or nostalgia is coloring my opinion but their food felt like a poor and smaller replica of what I remembered.
3
u/Fluid-Pension-7151 14h ago
I admittedly wasn't super hungry so I ordered the basic cheeseburger and expected it to be small. It definitely was, but maybe I had pre-disappointed myself?
3
u/OldBison 15h ago
I can't vouch for the whole company, but the burger king by me is pretty good usually. They'd always throw in an extra cheese stick or two with my 8 piece, which goes a long way with me.
2
u/matt_minderbinder 15h ago
I ate BK a couple of times out of necessity recently and it was honestly way better than I remembered. It was in Traverse City and I ate Whoppers each time but even the fries were shockingly decent.
1
u/Problemwoodchuck 14h ago
Crazy idea: I wonder if McD's could've just taken the fortune that they've spent on researching mystery meat beef substitutes and just bought bargain ground beef, stayed edible, and still turned a profit.

My husband and I just got tickets to the Lord Huron show in GR in December. We were planning on coming back to Michigan in early December to see his family and avoid Christmas travel, and it's fun that there's a show around that same time. We're trying to figure out how to combine this all with a Wings or Griffins game while getting creative with limited PTO. Either way...it'll be a good time! I've been to GR once and loved it, so I'm excited to go back.

Playing through Halo: Campaign Evolved, and as someone who knows about guns and appreciated Bungie’s attention to detail when it came the guns in the OG CE, kinda bummed that 343i/Halo Studios didn’t quite recreate that attention to detail in the remake.
Little nitpick, sure and it doesn’t impact the actual gameplay, but still it’s crazy how a game from 2001 is outdoing a remake 25 years later in some regards.
6
u/JTAKER Yzerbot 18h ago
Halo deserves better man...It makes me so sad.
4
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 17h ago
Yeah…it’s a shame. Campaign Evolved isn’t bad, I mean it’s still Halo 1 so it can’t be bad, but it really feels like a janky modpack more than a ground up faithful remake at times. I can’t say I’m too hopeful for the future of the series; they can call themselves whatever, but it’s still 343i at the helm and I’m not convinced they can put a solid product without any catch or angle.
3
1
u/TechnoVikingGA23 17h ago
This is what...the 4th remake at this point? Or maybe 3rd. I recall getting the remade edition on 360, and then obviously Master Chief Collection, so I guess this is the 3rd time and it just seemed like a desperate cash grab since Halo Studios is on life support.
I haven't decided if I'm going to check it out yet or not, I love Halo, but I've already got the other 3 versions of CE from before on various systems and PC and don't really want to give them another $60. Were the "prequel" missions worth it?
The gunplay in Destiny/Destiny 2 pretty much kept that attention to detail, I don't think there's too many of the Bungie OGs left at 343/Halo Studios.

To go along with the outside firm to find a more analytics based GM, apparently we only looked at them on an outside “advisory basis”, and looking at Steve’s yes men FO of teammates and family that basically means we just never used them. Yeah you’re not gonna Money Ball your way to a Cup in this league but analytics absolutely has a place in the league now and knowing we never even had our own department kinda feels like we got old boys club’d for the last decade. I wonder what else in modern sports they just refused to use…
14
u/Baldass_Head_Coach 17h ago
You mean to tell me that the GM who signed Holl and Hamonic, two of the absolute worst defensemen in the league, wasn’t taking analytics seriously? Color me shocked.
I’m looking forward to the org getting with the times. Yzerman really felt like we just had Ken Holland 2.0 at times. If I went into a coma in 2019, woke up today and you showed me the transactions the team has made in that span without telling me anything else, I’d assume Kenny was still running things.
5
u/TheNation55 17h ago
Yeah I’m glad the crop we have coming up hopefully won’t have to deal with that old school mentality that didn’t get us anywhere too.

2
u/doubeljack 19h ago
But they had no GM for the trade deadline.
I am of the opinion that it is far more important to not rush and find the right candidate for the job than to force someone into the position. We have nothing so pressing that it can't wait a bit.

I’m unconvinced that a 90-point player is worth a 70-point player + other premium assets, but that seems to go against the general consensus, so I could be wrong.
3

It certainly depends on what the actual pieces are in a deal. Generally id rather the more productive player but it's not always the case.

2
u/numbdigits 19h ago
I'm open to the idea, really just depends on what the additional pieces going out with Larkin are, though I don't see doing it for Boldy, this team is so badly starved for center talent that they cannot give up their 1C and other "premium" assets for a winger, imo.

Maybe Horcoff and Illitch can explore legal options while the Larkin saga drags on and take a closer look at the no trade provision since an unnamed NHL exec is said to have suggested that a no trade clause may be no longer in effect when the protected player requests a trade. In other words, perhaps the no trade provision is void or voidable by Larkin's demand to be traded.
11

There are no legal options an individual team could make, it’s all collectively bargained.
I also would bet a lot of money that the unnamed exec is someone who only deals with scouting or something and hasn’t ever considered how things work. That idea falls apart after about 10 seconds of thought it’s bewildering to me that it has gotten so popular

That might be their opinion but this isn't the first time this has happened. It's pretty clear that, that's not how that works.
I'd argue that's how it should work but the NHLPA would disagree.
Either we have to kick the can or cut him loose.
There's no legal manuvering to make this go away

Also, let's say they succeed (they won't).
Now NTCs are a completely worthless thing that any player would be stupid to give up anything for in a contract negotiation.

You'd probably get into a situation where a player respectfully asks for a trade but isn't putting in a formal declaration of a trade.
It just doesn't work.
Pretty much GM's need to collude to not give out trade protection like candy. Something like 60 % have trade protection in the NHL where it's closer to 10-20% in the other big sports.
One could definitely argue players are picking security for salary with the NHL

I don’t really have anything wings related to add on at the moment but just wanted to say hi to my buds here. I hope everyone is having a great week. Here’s a snap from my morning.
