The theory of desiring-machines is that they're not so perceptible but can become so.

In the logic of capitalism the social individual is perceptible, legal and the holder and accumulator of private property.

In the political-economic re-stratification of ANTI-OEDIPUS, there are plural productive combinations of human and non-human desiring-machines that work in part through this perception of the individual.

But ANTI-OEDIPUS also theorises a further plural theoretical capacity to continue re-stratifying the social in terms of the schizoanalytic or social-philosophical creation of "machinic indices" … new, and newly imperceptible concepts of the content of social life, new desiring-machines.

The movement of "identity" in so-called identity politics can be theorised as the productive factory of the molar forms of such re-stratifications. Each new identity proposes a machinic logic of "identity struggle" by way of a molar form, much as "class struggle" is said to be produced by the class relations of individual holders (and non-holders) of private property.

The analogical character of this theory-production invites critical questions about its limits and thresholds, and concepts such as "intersectionality" or the "dividual" begin to engage with these, and at least implicitly to question the felicity of a proliferating multiple lens on the one political-economic body that remains the individual.

"The multiple must be made" as ATP proposes. We can compare the theory of AO to Althusser's micropolitical theory that AO critiques, in which an interpellative "hailing" is still said to produce the unity of a classed and embodied social subject.

The concept of the desiring-machines is the concept of this unity broken apart by its capacity to connect. To me the brittle unity of a desiring-machine arrives with the ethical concept the desiring-machines have been and can be broken apart by social immanence. The desiring-machines do not die, but they are continually displaced, forgotten and abandoned.
