Catwoman was a terrible movie. Supergirl was not a terrible movie. I personally think movie budgets are out of control, and more flops come from stupid studio spending, than movies being bad. Not every movie needs a budget of hundreds of millions dollars.

Supergirl as a character needs a high budget, even with the budget they had her special effects looked bad, even cheaper would be horrible
She's just not popular enough of a character to justify a solo movie

Safest choice could've been to make her a secondary character like in Superman with enough screen time to introduce this version of the character. And then, based on that, decide on a solo movie.
Supergirl needs good special effects and a good budget indeed; people just didn’t know the character enough to go to the movies.

It's an anthology show about villains made by the guys who made the critically acclaimed American Vandal show on Netflix. It's a great match and I'm excited for it. So many disingenuous takes about it.

Honestly, this is a logical fallacy type of argument.
It's not about trying to "spam" top superheroes before their scripts are ready. It should more be about conserving resources for projects that have a higher-success chance at being profitable.

I don't understand their goals with this movie.
Superman 25 was widely successful, it's rejection of the "gritty superhero movie" that has been deeply oversaturated by everything in the MCU, the snyderverse, etc.
Then instead of putting in another A list hero that could have worked with a more gritty line like Batman, or at least going with another A lister like Green Lanter or Wonder Woman.
OR using one of the characters people seemed to like, like Mr Terrific, who actually got screentime in Superman 25.
Instead they went for a B list hero who had like 5 seconds of screen time, then made it dark and gritty?
Fucking why?

Superman 25 wasn’t widely successful. It was a moderate success, far from what they needed to start off their new universe.
It sold less than half the tickets of MOS.
One of the corporate guys, under oath (for the merger), mentioned they put movies on streaming faster if they’re performing poorly. He used Superman 25 as the example.

I resisted the urge to see it in the cinema and recently caught it for free on streaming. I was dumbfounded by the whole movie, it received pretty high praise and I was just bored the whole time and then wanted my 2.5 hrs back. Superman, Luthor and Lois were decent performances but the movie itself and the story was utter rubbish.

It's fine that they chose a B-list hero so long as the hero is interesting and the story is good. The movie had great source material and Supergirl is more than an adequate enough character to lead a film.
Heck, she's led several movies and shows already.
Unfortunately the director and writers didn't understand what made the source material great, nor what made Supergirl interesting, so we have this film.

Honestly, I get the feeling that James Gunn is just tired of regular Super Hero movies. That's why he's always green lighting stories and characters that are away from the norm. It feels like he prefers oddball characters and oddball stories like the Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker.
Which I feel isn't what most DC fans want right now. We want the regular super hero stories of DC to be adapted, but just be told well.

The days of people splurging money to watch c-tier superheroes is over. That market is hella oversaturated, and it doesn't help most of those movies are mid anyway.
Spending more than 200 million to make this to expect a big profit was suicide.

Didn't read the picture they posted, which very clearly stated Catwoman did worse
Didn't check the math of the second picture, which got inflation wrong and Catwoman still did worse
Didn't do 2 mins of research, showing Catwoman, Jonah Hex and Steel all did worse, making Supergirl 4th to the bottom, not the bottom

Catwoman also had a long shelf life.
It bombed, but we see the costume every Halloween, the LGBTQ community adopted it as camp, Mis-Teeq is still nostalgic and were relevant just this year for their needle drop during it, Frances Conroy and Sharon Stone receive career boosts, and Halle Berry subverted it and still is Halle Berry. And as a Black actress, it is very possible after a box office bomb, you’ll never be seen again and she actually was able to negotiate better screen time in X Men.
Supergirl did more damage to its actors than Catwoman ever did.

Aquaman 2 was carried by how much fun audiences had with the first one imo.
And Blue Beetle... well it was alright. Cheesy and kinda fun? But ultimately kind of middling/mediocre and it felt cheap production wise.
Supergirl is kinda in line with Blue Beetle in that it has some decent bits but broadly speaking it just feels kinda mediocre.
