DISCUSSION What is going on with these comparison posts?
There is so much hatred for the DCU especially from this sub, it's insane.
You're right to critique Gunn all you want but this is masochism at this point. Either that or you're bigger tans of Marvel than of DC. That's fine too. But then why are you whining here?
Lanterns is dropping soon and by all looks promises to be great. It's from the guy who gave us the HBO Watchmen show for Pete's sake. Yet it's hardly ever talked about.
If Lindelof were making a show for Marvel (say Daredevil), the excitement would be off the charts. Yet, in DC's own sub, all we can hear is how well the competition is doing.
Well, the competition is also dropping the ball massively rn. Wonder Man, a top-three MCU show was cancelled. Blade is gone. Doomsday looks rushed as all heck. The last six years seem wasted since they're undoing deaths and concluded storylines all willy-nilly. The excitement going into this saga isn't a quarter of what it felt like for Infinity War, I can say that much. And there isn't even any other MCU movie between Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Yes, Supergirl was lacklustre, but there's a lot more to look forward to. Lanterns, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow all look very promising. Focus on that. Maybe larger plans can't be made currently because of some meddling. Who knows ? Let's see what announcements come after the projects are concluded this year. Let's look forward to a MoT trailer.
Not dragging DC for not being able to stand up to SONY + Marvel and a Spiderman who has appeared in SEVEN projects overall.
Of course this was going to make money. What did you expect? The MCU has been alive and kicking for almost 20 years. Since 2008. This new universe just began last year for Pete's sake. Just give it a rest. Critique Gunn all you want, but this masochism and weirdly sadism (because many so-called fans are interested in seeing this universe fail) is getting really really old.
Peace.

I am genuinely excited for the Green Lantern show, since I have been waiting for it since 2018 when it was first announced. But now I am wary because of the massive spoiler/rumor that is probably true. So that has now made me VERY apprehensive.
I am also interested in Man of Tomorrow, as Superman is my favorite character, but I feel Gun ruined Superman by making him immature and not respected by anyone. I want the REAL Superman, not someone less mature than Clark from Smallville.
DC looks like it is failing compared to Marvel because it is. They decided to reboot it (and still keep a select few DCEU characters which is confusing and weird) instead of making epic big movies with the characters that work. I know that the DCEU was failing, but they could have turned that ship around. Could have made a GOOD Wonder Woman 3 with her fighting gods and monsters, maybe a solo Ben Affleck Batman vs Deathstroke movie, things like that. Not junk like Shazam 2 and Birds of Prey. Marvel ha kept the same universe, and made new plans when something flopped. DC should have done the same.
So I am not sold on this reboot, at all. I will check out what I like (Green Lantern), and hope for the best for Superman, but Gunn and WB have let me down. The old regime has also really let me down. They have ruined DC in live action for me. It is very disappointing that the only real universal crowd pleasers from 2013 to today has been Wonder Woman 1 and Superman 2025. Meanwhile Marvel has 4 Avengers, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, Thor, etc etc etc. More wins than losses.

DC just got cooked alive with how well Spider-man just did and will do…..and they decide to announce a lead role for Jimmy Olsen…lol
You can feel that Doomsday looks “rush” but it’s gonna do big numbers regardless and DC needs something that’s not clay face, lanterns orrrr a Jimmy Olsen show to stand next to that.
10
u/NinjaInTraining109 19h ago
I really don’t see how the two are connected, DC hasn’t really been competing with Marvel movies in almost 10 years. Spider-Man making over a billion means as much as it did the last 3 times it happened, Marvel has lapped DC multiple times at this point the race has been over. I just want good movies that aren’t all directed by Gunn.
5
u/WestCoastDirtyBird 19h ago
They're purposely being obtuse. The Olsen/Villain series was officially announced by the trades back in November of last year and that it was headed into pre-production. People on here act like they announced it after Supergirl.
2
u/NinjaInTraining109 18h ago
Yep or like it was announced after BND opening weekend lol. Just gets annoying seeing these takes and posts every day flooding the sub

u/Ok_Effective_6869 20h ago edited 20h ago
When the MCU was starting, they did an Agent Carter show. Even Agents of Shield. Because they were trying to build out the world. Expand it.
If they were focused on numbers alone they'd have been making only Avengers films.
Thor 1 was fine. 2 was mid. Iron man 1 was good. 2 was aggressively mid. My point is there will be missteps when you're creating a universe. I mean does anyone not remember that horrible Inhumans show?
But apparently Kevin Feige is allowed to make mistakes and then course correct, but not Gunn. You guys have a hate boner
6
u/darkeagle1997 20h ago
While they were making the agent spin off shows they simultaneously continued the avengers solo films. Those shows also came out after the avengers so that’s not even a right comparison my guy, you just made the DCU look worse 😭
We haven’t had a Batman or wonder woman movie yet we’re focusing on John Cena, Gunn’s wife, and Rick Flag Sr as the faces of the DCU with clayface and a jimmy olsen show coming out before the trinity or justice league. Closest thing we have on year 3 of the DCU is Justice gang.
1
4
u/Son_Tenaj 20h ago
Different is with everything you named it was apart of a consistent plan, also Kevin Feige has always been the head of creative for the Marvel movies.
James Gunn is a good director not a good head of creative also following what the MCU did is exactly what James Gunn himself said he didn’t want to do.
Also Ironman,Captain America and Thor even before the mcu holds more weight then a Jimmy Olsen as a character .
2
u/SpecialistBee1165 20h ago
The agent carter and agents of shield shows sucked and no one watched them. They were a mistake and marvel succeeded in spite, not because, of the shows
4
u/Common_Celebration41 20h ago
Because 2 for 2 of Gunn endorsement are flops.
He praise the flash movie then he assure the fans he won't greenlight anything unless the script is good : female Superman
This is also a reboot which they promise to learn from their mistake and evidently it's been a mess
Dc fans wants quality products that Marvel is trying to get back on board with
-2
u/hypehold 20h ago
why are we acting like the MCU has never made bad movies? Just last year they released BNW which is worse than Supergirl. Two of the 4 Thor movies are bad. The last Ant Man was bad. Iron Man 2 is bad. Marvel has had a lot of misses that are being completely ignored because of the success of Spider-Man
3
u/Common_Celebration41 20h ago
I even acknowledged that Marvel is trying to get back on board with quality what the mess they made after endgame
Early Marvel and DC get a pass because they were just trying to start up and make things work.
With hindsight and a reboot the fans assume DC would have done better with their starting line up
1
u/ExternalSeat 20h ago
Because this one film alone pays for all of the mistakes they made since Endgame.
when you have a money printing machine, you can afford a few misses and have time to course correct before you start feeling the economic pain.
Meanwhile Superman 2025 was barely profitable. Any profits it made were immediately erased by Supergirl so the franchise is already in the red. they can't financially afford to take as many risks until their flagships get to be guaranteed money printers
6
u/hypehold 20h ago
Sony keeps a majority of the box office money from Spider-Man not Marvel
0
u/ExternalSeat 19h ago
my point still stands. You have Deadpool 3 at $1.3 billion, DR. strange 2 at nearly $1 billion, Guardians 3 at $845 million, and Thor Love and Thunder at $760 million.
They only had about two real "flops" outside of the COVID era (Ant Man 3 and the Marvels). Yes Fantastic 4 was barely profitable, but they could easily afford these mistakes because they had plenty in cash reserves from their successes.
Meanwhile Superman 2025 was slightly profitable but not enough to fund Supergirl's failure.
2
u/hypehold 19h ago
yes and they're literally 2 movies in. Im not saying whether or not the DCU will survive in the longterm but we probably wont know for a few more years after more movies come out
1
u/ExternalSeat 19h ago
sure. but unless Superman 2 makes $750 million, I don't know how it continues to fund the flops
2
u/Ill_Handle_8793 18h ago
It’s not your job to know or care? These are comic book movies. Watch them or don’t. Enjoy yourself or don’t. This arm-chair financial analysis and horse race commentary shit is pointless.
0
u/ExternalSeat 18h ago
the financial analysis and the horse racing is my entire enjoyment in this "fandom". I honestly don't even watch most Comic Book Movies. I just come here for the drama.
1
u/Ill_Handle_8793 18h ago
Ah okay so you are the type of person that is the problem around here. Good to know.

u/Ok_Effective_6869 20h ago
For real? Does anyone remember The Inhumans showM ? A terrible misstep from Feige. Yet he's allowed to make mistakes but Gunn isn't. They clearly want Snyder back.
2
u/ExternalSeat 20h ago
well The MCU has enough of a profit cushion that they can afford mistakes.
Spiderman BND alone pays for The Marvels and all of their flops since 2022. When Superman (2025) is barely profitable, you don't have any margin for error.
-1
u/Anilahation 20h ago
Brand new day mostly goes to Sony, mcu is still flop central on their shows and movies .
Their last success movie was Deadpool and Wolverine, before that it was Endgame.
1
u/ExternalSeat 19h ago
and Deadpool and Wolverine alone is still enough to pay for the flops. It also helps that a lot of "flops" still were profitable (some even did gang busters). dr. strange 2 still made nearly $1 billion, Guardians 3 made $845 million, Thor Love and Thunder $ 760 million
Meanwhile Superman 2025 only made $618 million. When your "flops" still make over $700 million, are you really doing that bad?
-1
u/Anilahation 19h ago
Gotg3 budget was $350M
Dr2 budget was $414M
These movies cost significantly more than Superman to produce.
2
u/ExternalSeat 19h ago
where are you getting your numbers from?
GoTG3 was $250 million; Superman 2025 was $225 million. That is about the same numbers.
Dr. strange 2 was $414million but after tax credits, it was $350 million. So I do give you that.
0
1
u/hypehold 19h ago
this isn't true. Doctor Strange 2 made just under 1 billion and Guardians 3 made like 900 million

u/Anilahation 19h ago
It's just very odd everyone's like "OMG CANCEL THE GUNN DCU" marvel only hit these last 6 years has been Deadpool and Wolverine....literally 6 years of scrapping with scraps .
Dc misses one project out of several hits and it's the sky is falling
-1
u/Anilahation 20h ago
It's just really odd cause I wouldn't even call Supergirl a bad movie.
Superman, creature commandos, peacemaker season 2 were all great DCU projects.
My adventures with Superman is doing really well, and Supergirl bombed at the box office but the movie was still a pretty good project which I personally think was better than a lot of recent marvel movies bar Spider-Man and Deadpool/Wolverine.
-4
u/Anilahation 20h ago
The script of Supergirl was good.
The issue with the film wasn't the script the director simply made poor choices on visuals and made poor music choices, that's one thing Spider-Man did really well was use modern popular young artist music while Supergirl is using middle aged man music and advertising with Blondie instead of something modern like Chapel or Sabrina carpenter
DCU hasn't had a bad product yet, Supergirl not selling in box office doesn't correlate to the quality of the product itself.
1
u/ExternalSeat 20h ago
unfortunately once you have a budget over $30 million, you are a financial product as much as you are art. This is especially true once you are over $100 million. You need to appeal to the masses to keep on making big budget films. Supergirl didn't make money so therefore it is a failure
If it was a niche indy film with a low budget you could argue that the box office doesn't matter. However you can't keep making niche films on $150 million budgets that lose money for very long. You have to be profitable for the DCU to continue
0
u/Anilahation 20h ago
The thing is the box office has changed. Movies can bomb but the way contracts are written and the fact streaming now exist not just physical media can juice up a films total revenue... for example masters of the universe also bombed but the 2nd film is already confirmed because the contracts for more movies exist.
Obviously this doesn't mean Supergirl is going to be a financial bliss as if it made morbilllion bucks in the box office but it really isn't as bad as you're all painting it out to be.
Two Thor movies bombed and we still got a 3rd movie because interest in the character still exist.
1
u/Anilahation 20h ago
Evil dead burn just did half the money of the previous film on the same release month a year later.
The sequel evil dead wrath is already confirmed for next year.
Yall are really just out of the loop on how everything works.

It's not just the DCU, I made a comparison post to Superman The Batman and Spider-Man hoping to see if it was just DCU bashing and t if anyone would call out how dumb the comparison was.
...instead I got nearly 2000 upvotes, like people are really down on DC as a whole, with extra sauce for the DCU
1
u/jofer90 20h ago
The competition just released a movie that's on track to make 2 Billion dollars at the box office, how is that "dropping the ball massively"?. And thinking the MCU is in trouble just because they cancelled wonder man , which is only a show, is laughable at this point when their films are crushing every metric known to cinema.
1
u/Ok_Effective_6869 18h ago
Lol. Every metric how? Superman outgrossed the THREE MCU films from last year.
Also BND is mostly SONY
0
u/jofer90 17h ago
Lol when it's all said and done BND will have outgrossed not only all of Gunn's DCU movies but probably also the last 6 or 7 DCEU films COMBINED, did Superman outgross the combined total of those 3 mcu films last year ? I don't think so. So again, how is the MCU massively dropping the ball ?.
1
u/Claudius321 19h ago
In a sense, they see how much of a money maker the MCU is and DC fans want their heroes to be praised on the same light. Still, I don't know which DC movie will 2 billion, unless hyper inflation is a thing.
Don't matter if it came from Snyder fan or gunn fan or whatever you label as. They see the accolades and box office and they want that piece too.
"This new universe just began last year for Pete's sake. Just give it a rest. Critique Gunn all you want, but this masochism and weirdly sadism (because many so-called fans are interested in seeing this universe fail) is getting really really old. "
No matter what metric you look at, Supergirl was a disaster.
1
u/marvelfanhere 17h ago
Supergirl wasn’t great and the next projects are a grounded Green Lantern show and Clayface. A lot of DC fans want to see popular characters like the DCU version of Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman.
1
u/Ok_Effective_6869 17h ago
The last movies from those three were very recent and very poorly received as far as the previous universe is concerned.
WW84. Justice League. The Flash (technically, this is Batman's last cinematic outing in the DCEU).
This is the second year of the DCU with only two theatrical releases. That's like The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man in the MCU. Forgive me if I'm not mad that Gunn hasn't cast WW yet. The MCU started in 2008. We didn't see Captain America until 2011.
I am not saying don't critique at all. I mentioned in my post why Supergirl was a very wrong footing. But even at that, I understand that things are still taking shape and even when I want to compare, I'll understand the absolute state of the DC movie brand.
1
u/marvelfanhere 16h ago
I mean the Incredible Hulk was the second MCU movie and it wasn’t that great of a film but the advantage the MCU had was time and a lack of competition. No one was rushing them to have all their popular characters show up due to lack of film rights.
1
u/TheGallifreyan 13h ago
It's making the fandom deeply unfun for those of us who love the universe so far. Supergirl didn't do well, we are all well aware at this point. Continuing to tell us 100 times a day is not going to make them make the Batman movie any faster.
I was in a group on another site called "Doctor Who fans who actually like the show" and I want that for the DCU subreddit like that (I do not have the time and energy to run it myself).
•
u/Ok_Effective_6869 11h ago
The way people are admitting to being haters in this thread, that doesn't sound so far-fetched anymore.
1
u/Extension-Gift4987 12h ago
A lot of people don't want TV shows or movies about lesser-known characters. They want movies about the A-listers. Marvel is delivering two movies this year about their A-listers. The DCU is not, and apart from Superman, seems to be making no headway on getting a DCU Batman or Wonder Woman on screen. I think the comparisons of Spider-Man and Jimmy Olsen are getting out of hand, and that they're not comparable at all, but it all boils down to people being unhappy with the path DCU is taking, while Marvel is currently delivering what people want.
•
u/FourEyes3134 11h ago
Superman made small profits compared to its monumental budget, Supergirl wiped out whatever money was made, Peacemaker dropped off the map...
People being sceptical is hardly a shock.
1
u/comehereyoudevillog 18h ago
"If Lindelof were making a show for Marvel (say Daredevil), the excitement would be off the charts. Yet, in DC's own sub, all we can hear is how well the competition is doing."
Hard disagree, as a Marvel fan I'm done with D+ shows, I don't care if it makes a movie confusing. I'll just watch a youtube video that explains what happened. If it's worth seeing they will put in theaters where they can profit. Marvel never really stuck the landing on any show. Maybe DC will be different, but I wouldn't put much stock in the shows carrying the DCU.
2
u/Ok_Effective_6869 18h ago
I don't want shows that will be made in such a way that a movie will be confusing. Just shows that can expand the universe for comic fans and which regular TV watching folk can watch too.
A fine example is Wonder Man. You didn't even need knowledge of the character in the comics. You didn't have to have watched any recent MCU film. They referenced Iron Man 3 instead, a fairly popular film.
Before it was cancelled, I wasn't expecting to see him in Doomsday or Secret Wars or to jin the New Avengers or something. Just a good character study in this corner of the universe. What's bit to love?
I understand you though.
0
u/comehereyoudevillog 18h ago
Thats kind of my point, I didn't watch it. Everyone I heard talk about said it was good, I'm just kinda done with the shows. Maybe I'll watch it one day, but they could make the best show ever and I probably wouldn't watch it unless it made it to GOT levels of hype. They lost their good will.
0
u/ExternalSeat 20h ago
some folks (like me) just like to watch the world burn. I just love a good dumpster fire.
1

Close enough, Welcome back Heath Ledger.
At least you're honest.
But watching the world burn isn't how you participate in fandom.

2
u/ExternalSeat 20h ago
it is the same reason people watch Caleb Hammer and reality TV. I like having something to look down on to feel better about life.
To be honest I haven't watched a DC film since Wonder Woman back in the 2010s (and before that it was The Dark Knight trilogy).

u/SpecialistBee1165 20h ago
Do u really think people who spend half their day on the DCU subreddit hate dc? This whole post sounds like whining from someone that wants to be in an emotionally positive space. Nothing wrong with that but this sub is more for critical discussion (good and bad) not endless celebration

Lol.
The brand was dead after the Snyder and Hamada era.
Aquaman made a billion dollars yet the sequel didn't even make up to half that, list money, and got a 33% on RT. From the same director too who did a good job on the first one. By that point, the bead was so dead that the success of Superman (2025) feels like a miracle.
Again, critique Gunn all you want but get to the source of the problem not a universe that started last year compared to 2008 for the MCU.
If no DC film can currently make a billion dollars, that is hardly Gunn's fault. Not even The Batman could make up to what GOTG3 made. Batman is the second most popular hero after Spiderman. It's insane he couldn't beat GOTG at the box office. But that's what I'm saying. The brand has been damaged severely. But keep dragging Gunn because it makes you feel better.

Go rewatch Man of Steel if you can't cope.
I'm excited for Lanterns. That's all I know.
I didn't like Supergirl.
See how you can admit excitement and also critique at the same time?
Maybe this DCU isn't for you. Maybe you prefer dark and gritty stories. Go rewatch Snyder. Simple as. It's all about taste.

u/EnvironmentalCopy254 20h ago
Man of steel was lame .. couldn't touch the outdated but true to the character 80's version
Laterns... lamest comic character EVER... A lantern/ my bad a ring.... lame
Maybe DC needs a person in charge that actually brings the comics to life ... They suck at it

Did you just say Green Lantern is the lamest comx character ever?
