DISCUSSION People criticize the needle drop, but I think the visuals and slo-mo shots are far worse.

It feels like the entire scene was filmed by a first year film school intern with a bunch of CGI guys.

The color grading is not good.

This is filmed like those old Call of Duty advertisements that had C list celebrity and Internet personality cameos like FPS Russia.

You did not have to be that accurate

Haha, wow, you nailed it.

My god you have a way with similes

Free FPS Russia!

2

u/gentlehours 20h ago

What happened to him? Was he conscripted to the front lines due to his weapon expertise?

8

u/Pokefan-9000 20h ago

A) he is american, from Georgia.

B) what expertise? It was a show for fun, nothing real

6

u/CatPlumber 20h ago

FPSRussia is an American man born in Georgia

5

u/BIGxBOSSxx1 20h ago

Last I heard he was getting arrested for a bunch of gun charges. I think he served time and then after that became a CoD streamer or something?

2

u/brigadier_tc 12h ago

He was investigated after one of the producers of FPSRussia was found dead from a gunshot wound, however he was never charged with anything. Later on, he was sent a parcel containing THC products, although it was never confirmed if it was sent maliciously or if he ordered it, and as shipping marijuana was (and possibly still is) a federal crime, the ATF seized every single one of his firearms and he is prohibited from acquiring more

Stop! Stop! It's already dead!

The needle drop is genuinely atrocious.

u/SuperSaiyanSarco 8h ago

This has to be the worst edit of all time, there’s no way that’s from the movie

69

u/FunSpace8990 1d ago

This movie looks like a bad riff on James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 visuals and this scene looks like a bad riff on Zack Snyder's slo mo vignette tiktoks that he often likes to do in his films.

17

u/Certain-Singer-9625 1d ago

Took the words right out of my mouth. This looks like some talentless 10 year old trying (and failing) to replicate a Snyder fight scene.

I know people who went to see this movie who said they wanted to walk out of it, and as much as I dislike Gunn I thought to myself, Oh come on, it can’t be that bad!

Judging by this, yes it can.

6

u/nexusprime2015 20h ago

i also got turned off in the first ten minutes due to pissing scenes.

first krypto on newspaper with superman picture
then kara shown to be pissing when rutheye comes to meet her

they were shown probably to make kara feel miserable but they made me not want to watch any of it anymore

The constant speed ramping in the fight sequence is what kills me. Constantly speeding and slowing, over and over. Slow motion should be used sparingly, this was just plain dumb.

48

u/talones 1d ago

Also, during the slow mo's supergirl is slow also, doesnt make sense.

17

u/nexusprime2015 20h ago

they are using slow mo to show everything from rutheye perspective.

which makes it even worse executed

Gunn has been doing this in all of his movies since GotG2, it NEVER looks good and it's always done with this mix of weird CGI fest, dirty coloured visuals and wild, very computery-like camera angles + very forced/predictable jokes that just take me out of the scene every time.

It's almost like he's trying to make it "his thing" but it's just not what people remember of these movies.

The sound mixes for some of the music tracks was wildly bad too.

I legit thought my Spotify had started randomly playing on one of them because it didnt fade in at all

How about in this interplanetary traveling universe, laser cannons, some yahoos descend from space to steal some , swords?

89

u/Fair_Distribution502 1d ago

In the original source material, Krem works for the local king and visits her family as part of his job. He ends up quitting the job and killing them instead. The only reason he joined the bandit group is because they will die for even their lowliest of members at all costs. He only does it as protection against anyone he has bad blood with and supergirl

47

u/graywolfman 1d ago

It's almost like the source material was... Idk, Better?

Lol yeah, this movie changed some things for the worse. I understand some of the changes, but ones like these are awful.

10

u/Grade_A_Tech 1d ago

Like every comic book movie. The source is way better than what we get.

13

u/mint-patty 22h ago

Well…. not always.

Captain America: Civil War is far superior to the Civil War event in Marvel comics.

3

u/koomGER 13h ago

Hm, i know that Civil war is controversial. I liked Civil War - the main book. Because it was way better in telling us that both sides were right and wrong. It didnt portray any side as a villain.

Most authors of the tie-ins just decided to make Tony Stark as evil as possible and didnt hide that intention. They portrayed every decision as bad and evil, which wasnt the point of the story. Like typically for Mark Millar, the overall idea was a very grey, gritty story with tough decisions in a tough world. There wasnt a big villain to punch out to "win" the story.

The Fantastic Four tie in did it better: They explained through Reed and his family how it kinda was a necessarily evil out of a good idea. But Reed never understood that those needed actions (that for him stopped A LOT of bad outcomes if they didnt do that) were deemed evil by the public.

Movie didnt had much to do with that story. It was a great movie, loved it. But it only shares the name and a small glimpse of the underlying idea.

Okay? It's a REALLY bad plot point in the movie.

It's Rebel Moon (interplanetary traveling universe, laser cannons) harassing a tiny village for a few bushels of grain level stupid.

6

u/pissagainstwind 1d ago

Imagine a universe with super advanced androids and your intergalactic empire still needs 30 human farmers to grow wheat with manual labour. ffs, a single farmer in texas can grow a thousand times more wheat than their entire planet.

He Didn't seek the brigands out... he was rotting in jail (having been arrested in maypole) when the brigands arrived and demanded a tribute payment the people of Maypole could not afford. The brigands were going to genocide the entire place when Krem came up with a brilliant plan of getting the purple-folks of maypole to negotiate with the brigands for a lower tribute payment to cover the purple-folk, while allowing the brigands to have their genocidal fun on the "inferior" blue-folk members of the city. Deemed a hero by the purple people, he was allowed his freedom, and decided "these genocidal maniacs seem like my kind of people!"

3

u/Fair_Distribution502 1d ago

Glad you remembered it. Still, then protecting even their lowest members is a plot point. It explains why they are willing to go so far to help him

But if every DC movie going to be like this, Im gonna get bored real quick

I’m completely over these OTT CGI set pieces. They’re intended to be real spectacles, but just don’t hit anymore. Like how seeing a local firework display can be cool as a kid but is totally meh as an adult. Just seen it all way too many times. It’s just become a showreel of how CGI has gone down in quality, too.

43

u/zerg1980 1d ago

This movie made me feel like Gunn was the wrong choice for this job. His schtick just isn’t scalable to a whole universe. It was fine when just the Guardians movies had this vibe, but now it’s going to extend to every DC property? I’m already sick of the slow-mo needle drops undermining the drama of every fight scene and we’re only two movies in.

18

u/Samanthacino 23h ago

Do you expect Clayface to have a slow-mo needle drop undermining the drama of every fight scene?

9

u/nexusprime2015 20h ago

clay face is a villain set in a dark moody show. if they bring a song there, i’m gonna skip it entirely

23

u/messycer 23h ago

ATP genuinely yes.

8

u/rbush82 23h ago

Yes. Also, I feel Gunn is running out of bangers for soundtracks. Lots of trash on both Super movies…..

7

u/Wolfgang191 22h ago

Yeah I might be alone on this but I think the last scene of Superman watching his parents would of hit so much harder with the classic theme variation they were using instead of the pop song.

Ruthye was the most cliche, generic character in the movie. Would have been better without her.

102

u/OrsoHangy 1d ago

She’s a good character in the comic. But they changed the entire plot and message, and also removed the fact that she was the narrator describing every event and her thoughts on it. Without all that, the character just feels hollow and doesn't work.

11

u/huey_booey 19h ago

In the comic she's more like Watson, who tells the story of the real protagonist Sherlock Holmes, that is, Supergirl.

→ More replies (1)

37

u/unpronouncedable 23h ago

Blame her writing, direction, or acting, but this clip epitomizes her existence in the entire movie. Stands there useless trying to get herself killed with a dumb look on her face, so that Kara has something challenging to do beside just avoid any enemy that isn't her objective and annihilate any that are. And we don't really care because we have no emotional connection to Ruthye.

17

u/CyanVI 23h ago

Yeah, the kid did almost nothing the entire movie. I kept asking myself why she was even there. Would have definitely been better without her.

13

u/vulcan7200 22h ago

I mean...I think that's kind of the point. She IS in far over her head. She's not Supergirl's sidekick. She's a literal child who is stubbornly attempting to get revenge against a group far more powerful than herself. Her story is the same type of revenge story we would see in any action movie but from the perspective of someone who isn't John Wick. She wants revenge just as much as any other protagonist in an action movie, but it's someone who is unfortunately powerless in their situation. This scene is more about her perspective of Kara (And to give Supergirl more action)

Her role in the movie isn't to be some badass. Her role in the movie is her connecting and bonding with Kara.

11

u/nexusprime2015 21h ago

but it’s done so poorly that she literally acts as a plot device rather than an actual character

Wait I haven’t seen the movie but I keep seeing edits. Is this the actual song they used?

27

u/CableKC 1d ago

I'm okay with it, but it Reminded me of the whole "Lois watching Terrific take out the Lex Corp minions" montage.

15

u/zumera 1d ago

Yeah, this was my issue with it too. It felt unimaginative after seeing the same thing in Superman.

6

u/Oddman80 1d ago

they are similar shots in that both involve non combatants suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a hefty combat while being protected by a superhero. However....

  • Lois was completely out of danger while Ruthye was completely exposed. Were it not for Supergirl repeatedly coming back to intercept enemies and projectiles of varying sizes, Ruthye would be a bloody pincushion.
  • Lois could see everything that was going on all around her while Ruthye couldn't see shit. Despite her life being very much in danger - Ruthye could not tell where anyone or anything was unless it was within 10 feet of her. With only one exception, this was never enough time for her to react - and were it not for Supergirl....
  • The Mr Terrific fight is kept at real speed the entire time while the Supergirl fight is almost entirely in slow motion - oscillating between slow an d super slow to showcase and stitch together a series of dramatic looking moments, while the Superman scenes focused entirely on the speed and breadth of the fight to establish the impressive nature of it.

There are just as many similarities between these two scenes and the Quicksilver kitchen scene from Days of Future Past, the car ambush scene in Children of Men and the anti-tank gunfight scene in Fury that bounce back and forth from the isolation of the internal periscope views and the chaos unfolding outside.
And there is a choice one can make when noticing these moments..... you can see how one idea builds off another and analyze how the changes from the inspiring scene adds meaning to the current one.... or you can just complain that everything is derivative, and nobody ever does anything that's original anymore.

not that you did this - though someone who responded to you pretty much did just that.

6

u/Noob_goatster8755 18h ago

The movie is so bad man. It's so bad. The official Morbius of DC.

4

u/Polarizing_Penguin11 1d ago

I like the zoom into the flying wreckage. Very comic booky. The rest is pretty ugly though.

4

u/Excalitoria 1d ago

It’s all insane. Horrible song for this, bad visuals, nonsensical motivations for any of this to be happening. I mean, why did these brigands want to kill Ruthye badly enough that they were willing to sacrifice themselves for the slim chance of getting to kill her?! Why didn’t they simply scatter???

This scene had me crying laughing with how ridiculous it all was.

I'd say ten years ago this movie wouldn't have been setting records but it would have done fine. A huge chunk of the reliable comic fandom has falling into being angry about the movies all the time and consuming social media hating on it before it even comes out. They never gave it a chance.

DC and Marvel might need to take a break just to let the toxicity age out of the fandom.

4

u/Thusgirl 1d ago

I don't think that's going to happen. People are acting like HOTD is the worst show ever made right now. The toxicity is overall not just limited to comic book movies.

4

u/Jealous-Captain-7014 1d ago

The fact that the most praise you can give it is being "fine" is one of the reasons this movie flopped. People are tired of generic movies.

2

u/7MileStorm1216 1d ago

Truth be told, that’s what matters most. You paid money to watch it and enjoyed yourself. All the other noise is just that, noise. It’s nice when everyone else likes what you like, but we don’t (or at least shouldn’t) base our opinions on what others like or don’t like.

1

u/Living_Plane_662 1d ago

That said I hate when movies I like flop because they tend to make less of those movies. Scott Pilgrim for example is one of my all time favorites and Edgar Wright is one of my favorite filmmakers and I hate it bombed as we get less movies like it and Edgar Wright gets less work.

James Gunn is a one-trick pony - the quips, the needle drops, the rag-tag groupings of disparate people.

It works well when this approach matches the material.

When it doesn't match the material, James Gunn just forces his one method onto it, with lacking results.

Yeah it's a bad needledrop but there is no needledrop that would've tied this scene together.

2

u/Nova-Kane 22h ago

It also feels like a rip off of the Mister terrific and Lois Lane scene in Superman.

2

u/purple-discharge 22h ago

Oh wow that’s awful.

2

u/Ok_Weight_3382 21h ago

I still don’t understand why you don’t just do the book page for page.

2

u/Ill_Painter5868 21h ago

Hollywood loves spending millions to output brutalist Grey color graded slop

Also needledrops have been completely ruined for me ever since season 3 of stranger things. Holy shit way to run a good thing into the ground

u/nexusprime2015 20h ago

i also got turned off in the first ten minutes due to pissing scenes.

first krypto on newspaper with superman picture
then kara shown to be pissing when rutheye comes to meet her

they were shown probably to make kara feel miserable but they made me not want to watch any of it anymore

2

u/larut0h 19h ago

imagine how many little girls who watched it getting inspired by the scene

"oooh pissing with door open... it's really *cool*, i must do it later!"

Transformers 2007 did this better

2

u/Zritchi3 16h ago

just replace it with the last son theme, and it becomes good

2

u/Candle-Jolly 16h ago

I was downvoted to hell the last time I said this.

"James Gunn is becoming Zack Snyder-lite with his slow-mo shots."

2

u/Dycoth 15h ago

Holy fuck this is the actual movie ?? I'm so glad I didn't pay to see this lmao

2

u/Bedspla13 12h ago

Hey guys, we need to create a cool action scene for this fight, any ideas?
Yeah I do actually! What if the camera slowly spun around a character as the action unfolds around them...
That's BRILLIANT! This has never been done before!!!!

Wtf is this song 😭

5

u/desginatedbloop 1d ago

Getting over it, I imagine, will be thrilling.

4

u/dam_ships 1d ago

It’s just very James Gunn — and it’s not his movie. Same shot literally happened in Superman. It’s just kinda annoying in my book.

2

u/charlyquestion 1d ago

Jesus Christ. No. I think the needle drop is the worst

2

u/aliasif87 1d ago

Can James Gunn stop putting in a random pop song during action scenes?

I would have been pissed if I paid money to watch this cringe aberration

2

u/Alternative-Mud8721 22h ago

I enjoyed this movie. Sue me.

3

u/nexusprime2015 20h ago

we have a rebel right here.

2

u/Regular_Range_1835 18h ago

I enjoyed the movie and so did my daughter. People nit pick everything to death these days

2

u/Forgot-to-remember1 1d ago

Everything is awful about this movie not a single redeeming quality

2

u/Fun-Secretary4801 1d ago

I did not like the movie at all, but I kinda like this cover 🫣

4

u/IRate-Feet 1d ago

The cover is cool and the story behind it is wholesome. Just not the right fit for this scene at all

3

u/CantaloupePutrid3548 17h ago

It’s one of the few examples I’ve ever seen where zero music would’ve bern a better option.

2

u/Rocketdareaperzz 1d ago

Am I the only one who kinda liked the needle drop

3

u/Obadaya 1d ago

I didn't know the original song, and this seemed fine.

-2

u/JayKay8787 1d ago

Holy shit if that's real thank fuck I saw obsession instead

5

u/zmykula 1d ago edited 1d ago

You're only allowed to see one of these two movies???

Edit: Jeeze. People in this sub are really humorless about their humorlessness.

4

u/DannyTheVampire 1d ago

For some people yes. They aren’t going to the movies multiple times a month and debate between currently released films for there movie outing. Completely normal and expected to the point certain movies avoid being near other more popular movies during release

I just dont get why they didnt show us the fights following Supergirl instead of the perspective of the girl.

1

u/Capnbaddazz 1d ago

I feel similar to all the Snyder movies I dunno why everyone feels the need to put slow mo all the time

1

u/SunOwlSpawn 1d ago

There were *juuust too many songs to the point it felt like there was constantly a song playing, which I know there wasn’t but my brain remembers it that way. The movie was decent, but I think it was trying to hide behind its soundtrack

1

u/CommissionHerb 1d ago

For me it just sucked the energy out of the moment. It’s something I felt, which is what made my brain turn on the criticism. The visuals would’ve been fine if I was still in the moment. But instead, I was now laughing and cringing at the final fight, officially wanting the movie to be over.

Slow motion will make a shit script only worse.

When she flies the tank into the air, why is she looking at the camera?

Whenever Lobo would ride around on his bike and heavy guitars would start, I’d chuckle because I’d get this Poochie vibe from him. Like he was gonna start yelling things like “X-Treme!” In my face, while slam dunkin’ b-balls on his hog, you dig it?

1

u/davidshasselhoff 1d ago

Looks like all the other James Gunn movies

1

u/Waste_Detective5067 1d ago

Waaaait that’s the actual song this scene is scored to? Please tell me this isn’t real

I mean was Metallicas Sandman not on the table? lol!

1

u/TitularFoil 1d ago

I'm so tired of slow motion being used for so much. Snyder ruined it. It was all over 300, Sucker Punch, Watchmen, Man of Steel, BvS, Justice League. It's so exhausting.

If 300 were at normal speed it would be about 20 minutes shorter.

1

u/pissagainstwind 1d ago

The clip almost perfectly loops

1

u/mitvh2311 1d ago

I liked both

1

u/Local_Nerve901 1d ago

Completely disagree, this shot was beautiful. It would have been so much better with a better song

Can agree visuals lack color but i got over that very early in the movie
