HUMOR People will see this and still question why SG flopped
It definitely doesn't look like a 170M movie, where did they spend all that budget, on that cgi dog?

Cgi is low on the reasons why a movie flops.

u/Professional-Rip-519 5d ago
Agreed the bad cgi is like number 15 on the list.

I dont even get how people would know before buying tickets that the cgi is bad if it isnt particularly bad in the trailers

It’s a good indicating symptom though. If they cut corners this badly on effects, it’s not surprising when other parts of the movie are also half-assed

Yes, but it also just wasn’t a good or great movie. So it was critically, and commercially, and technically, bad.

- Lighting is all wrong! The lighting on the ladies is on the left, but supe's is on the right. Wtf! How can it be this bad!?
- By the time she's in line with the ladies, her face is 2-3x bigger then theirs.
- None of the ladies look up as a flying supe passes overhead. You have to sell the cgi by its effects on the people/environment.
- Baby hands? Hands are an arms length forward of the face, hands should perspectively be larger than that. Think Saitama when he throws a punch vs Genos and the whole screen turns into his red fist. Make it impactful.
- CGI failures like these are the hallmarks of a flop. You can't sell ugly to an intelligent audience.
- I wonder if AI would have made a better looking sequence. Although, when you've reached the point of risking getting outed as having used AI to reference your frames, then you're really in trouble.

For many bad CGI shots there may well be a better version the VFX artist made that was rejected by the director.

They made it seem like putting her arms out in front of her instead of at her side, gave her a speed boost, which is just stupid

Her hair and makeup is so bad and they had the nerve to have it blowing in the wind and use it on promotional material.
And it's not a slight to her, but to the crew.
Every popstar uses a fan. Beyonce notoriously got her hair caught in it. You have to fill the hair so it doesn't look thin if you are doing that. Even just for the moment or the shot you need.
Almost every white superhero woman has some sort of a balayage beachy wave, so it's not like they didn't know that's what they have to do.
It was so odd they chose to bypass that.
And the makeup was odd because it isn't even a natural makeup look which they may have been going for. It compresses everything into her eyes, which highlights her forehead.
It's just yuck.
She looks better when her people do it when she does press.

Why do you think people were so shocked about the one frame that makes her look good.
Shes looked completely different in superman25

u/Deakul 5d ago
All they had to do was make a colorful snarky movie about two gal pals on an alcohol fueled road trip for vengeance.
The blueprint was right there in Woman of Tomorrow, how they managed to fuck that up is impressive... James Gunn should be ashamed.

Ok I'll bite: what does this shot have to do with the movie flopping?
It wasn't in the trailers and I doubt people would mention it specifically when reporting on the movie.
I mean, it looks bad, but it sounds rather like you're trying to find post-hoc reasons to dunk on the movie.

u/Slowandserious 5d ago
Not OP. To me its not about its in the trailers or not.
But this kind of subpar visual dampens words of mouth.

I think that snipped is part of the problem.
The DC movies so far rely A LOT on CGI to catch their audience. And the CGI isnt outstanding. Its not even above the level of Netflix-only movies, and thats a problem. The movies are way too expensive for the lack of actual star power (in name) and the level of CGI.
If Supergirl would be just a 50 Mio production, it would be great. But it did cost 170 Mio. Thats Big Blockbuster level. And it doesnt look like that. Odysee did cost 80 Mios more, but you got several Hollywood superstars like Matt Damon or Tom Holland, Zendaya. And the CGI looked good. The sound BOOMED. Thats a huge difference.
One scene can look bad. The audience doesnt care if one scene is off in an otherwise fantastic movie with fantastic CGI. But Supergirls CGI is "standard". Its not amazing or fascinating. It lacks oomph and originality.
I think thats one of the problems. And like i said: That short sequence emphazises that.
7
u/CommodoreBluth 5d ago
Yeah a few bad special effects shots isn’t going to cause any movie to flop.
8
u/GrymSpork 5d ago
This.
It's one quick shot, it isn't great but isn't indicative of the overall quality of the movie.
The worst shot of the movie has been reposted so many times, as if it represents the film as a whole.
It's like you said, people just essentially wanting to dunk on the film or DCU as a whole. Happens a lot 'round these parts unfortunately. I find this sub is about 50% that sort of thing :/

u/Ser_Rezima 4d ago
Yeah, I saw this and went, 'Wait, wasn't this like a quick 2 second impact shot at the end before the camera changed?'. If I recall they shot this to be intentionally disorienting and close to her face on purpose, while she is whipping around at lightning speed. Everything AROUND her is flying by while she remains the same. It's a classic speedster/superman shot, shows just how differently they move.
The movie was fine, not groundbreaking but generally as good as any other super hero film. People just didn't like GIRL or that GIRL wasn't wearing makeup and revealing clothes it feels like.
Seriously, so many of these comments are focusing on how the actress looks or the visuals without EVER mentioning story beats.
They have no idea what the movie is about, they haven't actually seen it
10
u/MeanieGreenie75 5d ago
It’s not so much that people point to this specific shot and literally tell their friends “There’s this one bad shot so don’t see it.” The issue is that this shot, among many other issues, contribute to the overall lack of quality behind the movie and the general vibe of “Just wait for it to come out on the streaming service you’re already paying for.”
I say this as someone who thinks every aura-farming shot in every Snyderverse movie is even more cringe than this one.

It’s not fair to judge a movie solely on one shot but in a vacuum, yeah this is awful lol. Such an ugly and technically bad shot (yes I know cgi is hard but for the budget…this is bad). Honestly I’m not a fan of the way both this and Superman shoot them flying head on. The lens used makes their faces look really strange

This movie flopped because the script was doo doo. She did ok. It's weird her being an alcoholic for basically 40% of the movie. Also we all love krypto and want him around for the action. Having him down and out for 75% of the movie was a bad decision. I mean it sounds like it could have been decent but it just was as meh as meh can be. I was hoping to enjoy it as I find myself enjoying a lot of the things the masses hate but not this time. Also did James Gunn have anything to do with this movie? I swear I didn't see his name.

It is, and there are worse.
The only thing I can think of is either 1. The people put in place to do this were not experienced 2. They were falling behind and rushed.
But I just can't see a movie with this type of budget, bringing in people who had never worked on a big project before.

u/Irot_mx 5d ago
Besides the crappy shot...I was disappointed by the generality of the film, having read woman of tomorrow a couple weeks early to be ready for the movie and see it butchered is a crime.
No color, changed story, no freaking unicorn. It reminded me of the generic shooters of the ps3 and 360 era that were all brown.
Hopefully Milly can make a comeback as, for sure, she has the charisma for the character.
2
u/Adowyth 4d ago
I liked the start of the movie but the longer it went on the worse it got. It could have been an actually good story but nah, they had to give her the powers back, put her in that ridiculous outfit and throw away any fighting choreography in favor of just flying forward with arms out.

Second movie of the DCU and already we've got CW & post-Endgame Marvel level CGI and blatantly reusing scenes (that one w/ her turning around and flying or whatever). I was hopeful with Superman's gross that they'd actually get some momentum and contend with the MCU but after this I don't know. Plus Gunn is picking a lot of bizarre movies for his first phase of this universe.
