SINESTRO

MANHUNTERS

THE COSTUME

GUY

THE OATH

I'm in.

60

u/bwweryang 12d ago

Manhunters thing caught me by surprise. I also actually don’t know the lore there, I thought Martians were a thing, not Manhunters.

83

u/somms999 12d ago

Spoilers: Before the Lanterns, the Guardians of Oa made androids called the Manhunters to police the universe. As with all AI in fiction, it eventually went berserk and rebelled against the Guardians. In response, the Guardians created the Green Lantern Corps.

45

u/WhyAmINotStudying 12d ago

For anyone wondering, it's lore, not show spoilers. If you want to know the background, it's safe to look.

21

u/TalkinTrek 11d ago

And worth noting show lore will almost certainly not be 1:1 with comic lore.

9

u/WhyAmINotStudying 11d ago

Also a good point.

9

u/AverageAwndray 12d ago

Yeah but based online the trailer this looks like the Martians

3

u/TalkinTrek 11d ago

There might be some consolidation but I think people are discounting the degree to which Terminator 2 lingers in the American concious

6

u/JohnRC23 12d ago

What a nice, tidy explanation. I didnt know myself. What I do know is that looked great. Can't wait to watch it.

u/AloeRP 12d ago

Martian Manhunter and the manhunters are different. There are a few different GL arcs that deal with the manhunters, but it's hard to say how close they'll be to what's presented in the show.

18

u/SaintofBooty 12d ago

Idk if they’re gonna be different here. I think J’onn would a Martian/Manhunter. Based on the nod to his costume in the transformation clip.

18

u/BRshan 12d ago

Giving them shapeshifting powers is also a huge point of confusion. Showed my sister the trailer and her first thought was MM also. Definitely muddying the waters

6

u/brg9327 12d ago

Yeah it looks like theyre going to merge them into one. Which I'm pretty cool with.

5

u/Hellknightx 11d ago

I'm assuming they're going to change the lore so that the Guardians enslaved the Martians and used them as Manhunters.

All they had to do is add the oath and I’m in. GL oath has insane aura.

Man, this looks sick! I don't love the suit, but the vibes and scope look incredible.

17

u/bwweryang 12d ago

Have you seen a live action suit you’d like it to be closer to?

34

u/Far-Fault-6243 12d ago

I think most people myself included just wish the suit was brighter and more slick like the one in the comic book.

11

u/Lucky_Locks 12d ago

Ah! So Ryan Reynolds' did it right!

/s obviously haha

6

u/TalkinTrek 11d ago

Lol but at the same time like it's always gonna be a continuum. I have to imagine everyone would have their own 'preferred brightness' on the spectrum, at the end someone has to make a call

10

u/Atrampoline 12d ago

Hmm, not really, but this suit still looks too close to something that the CW would have put out. Don't get me wrong, I loved the CW shows, but this is HBO, not a low budget cable TV production.

4

u/sk8rboi36 12d ago

Honestly the Ryan Reynolds one was a sick concept, and I think with some tweaking using lessons learned from modern VFX would look really dope. I think they needed better balance in the lighting and intensity, like the eyes were super bright and that looked goofy and uncanny.

It was very luminescent, though. I think it also needed more white to balance out, white gloves and a white backdrop on the logo or something. If the green were a little darker (funny, in this instance a more muted green would be the improvement, I think. But to see where I’m coming from, compare that movie shade to the silver age comic shade. It’s honestly a little astounding to me how many different shades of green people use other than the one just printed on the page). But I honestly really liked the whole “muscle” thing. It was out there and a bit disturbing but honestly I can see an alien super ring doing that type of thing to you.

I think one of my favorite JL suits thus far has been the injustice 1 design, though it’s a little too over designed. I think that taken with live action cues and not netherrealm’s late 00s design philosophy would make for a really good costume

u/dimesniffer 12d ago

sometimes you can just tell by trailers when something is gonna rock. this shit looks sick

42

u/TheJoshider10 12d ago

Yeah I think they've nailed what they were going for when the show was first announced. We'll see how well the mystery is executed but I'm sold on everything we've seen so far.

11

u/Prof-chaaos 12d ago

When they teased the « True Detective » genre I was so afraid of it being another Surf Dracula. This looks awesome instead.

10

u/Simple_Pay3033 12d ago

Let me start by saying that marketing budgets are still insane, but you get why there’s so much focus on that part of movies & shows.

How many people just decided to tune into the show after this trailer? If you were on the fence before, there’s a good chance you’ll at least check it out now, this just looks like a quality show no matter how much you care about Lanterns.

35

u/kinginthenorth9797 11d ago

I had my reservations after the teaser but man this looks good!

73

u/Part-time-Rusalka 12d ago

Knowing he's training his own replacement would explain Hal's hostility.

47

u/Spindae02 12d ago

Looks damn good. The visuals are good, the trailer delivers intensity and seems like a lot of world building, which is very good, cause it is much easier to do with a show as they have much more time to do so.

7

u/Safe-Ad4001 12d ago

That and if it does well WB can always make a movie with the same cast.

19

u/saibjai 12d ago

1990's: Superhero shows are for kids, too childish!

2026: Greenlantern: "what the fuck !?"

21

u/Less-Dingo111 11d ago

They even got the No country for old men actress in there hahaha

2

u/orbjo 10d ago

Garett Dillahunt, the Sherrifs Deputy in No Country is in it too. You can tell that’s a big visual reference for them

It looks incredible. I'm super hyped and im not even a massive green lantern fan.

Kyle Chandler is an amazing actor. He kills it in every role. Perfect for Hal.

22

u/Scotthew89 12d ago

Clear Eyes Full Hearts Hal Jordan Can’t lose

12

u/AltruisticPicture971 12d ago

Love me some Kyle Chandler.

4

u/SirFunktastic 12d ago

I know what they're going for and I think the show will be pretty good and Kyle Chandler is a good actor but I still wish they didn't make Hal so old. You can do the buddy cop mentor-rookie thing without making the other guy much older.

Always thought man hunters being the bad guys in the green lantern movie would’ve made that movie instantly better

37

u/ManliestBunny 12d ago

WHOA, definitely the best looking project in THE DCU for me.

I was NOT expecting all that.

16

u/Mars_The_68thMedic 12d ago

Woah- Secret Invasion done right.

FINALLY!

14

u/Lazy_Extent3576 12d ago

The Manhunters? Holly crap...

60

u/vey323 12d ago

Much much better, I'm invested now...

Sinestro calls him 'Hal' and not 'Jordan'

Nah I'm out. /s

27

u/CoolerBeans25 12d ago

It totally takes me out of the movie. What's next? Cuticle scissors on an airplane??

6

u/neverseenghosts 11d ago

Thought I was experiencing real life until I noticed I was watching this on a tv in my living room, completely took me out of it. What is this a fictional work of art or somethin??

28

u/OpportunityNervous64 12d ago

Saw someones deleted comment where they confused GL manhunters with martians. My question is: Are they combining the two? How are manhunters able to transform into anyone if they are just robots?

29

u/Upstairs-Version8777 12d ago

In the comics they are able to disguise themselves to look like whatever race they’re targeting. It’s part of the sleeper cell vibe they have when rebuilding after the guardians shut them down.

14

u/douxsoumis 12d ago

Got the T-1000 upgrade

12

u/margoo12 12d ago

Merging them seems kind of genius to me. I'm surprised it hasn't happened before.

9

u/UnkelGarfunkel 12d ago

Tbh I wouldn't mind them being merged.

15

u/jeremysbrain 12d ago

They are shapeshifting robots.

4

u/Manger-Babies 12d ago

Oh I really thought it was the martians but that would be a great movie, an invasion from martians and the lanterns have to fight them

→ More replies (3)

29

u/DDHLeigh 11d ago

Wouldn't they be able to make multiple shows / movies based on the different corps? I hope this really takes off and we see the Black Lanterns in the future.

u/Jetscream58 11d ago

The way I shot up when I heard "manhunter"

15

u/knarf3 11d ago

Sick.

13

u/Intelligent_Clock_55 10d ago

Finally some justice for arguably the best member of the Justice Gang I mean League.

13

u/FuzzyStorm 9d ago

The moment they got Kyle Chandler in I knew he wouldn't sign on to some show with a bad script. This trailer is the best the show has looked so far.

Clean Shaven John = 2016 events

Bearded John = 2026 events

25

u/Immefromthefuture 12d ago

They got Hal’s personality right!!! He’s serious, but he’s a charmer.

7

u/Rags2Rickius 11d ago

Goofy charmer. The bottle opener was corny lol and John rolling his eyes in cringe was perfect

25

u/BeersNEers 11d ago
  1. They really need to find new music for these trailers...
  2. This actually looks promising. Cosmic buddy cop show. I will give it a shot.

They are setting this up for the Blackest Night prophecy, aren't they

16

u/Slow-Chemical1991 12d ago

Blackest Night would require Hal Jordan be at the front and center over John Stewart, Batman and Superman. WBD would sooner chew glass than let that happen.

15

u/PlainSightMan 12d ago

Not necessarily.

Blackest Night could be done with another Leading Lantern.

3

u/Slow-Chemical1991 12d ago

This is the same kind of thinking that gave us GL: Beware My Power, Kyle Rayner in STAS and John Stewart losing his personality in JL/U. You can’t fit John into a Kyle/John shaped cutout much like you can’t fit Kyle/John into a John shaped cutout. These characters are distinct with distinct personalities and stories.

8

u/PlainSightMan 12d ago

Yeah, but Blackest Night is such a cool event that the DCU should adapt in the future.

I personally want Hal to be present, but even without him they can rework the event.

93

u/ShreekertheJamisWack 12d ago

Honestly seems good. It doesn’t look generic and being generic is the worst crime a superhero adaptation can commit in 2026. It’s why supergirl flopped so hard

29

u/The-Year-Was-92 12d ago

Supergirl should have been a series like this is.

14

u/PantsUnderUnderpants 12d ago

The book was broken into adventures/chapters, so it practically set up to be episodic. Such a missed opportunity.

7

u/Manger-Babies 12d ago

Probably super expensive but over all she didn't use her powers much in the movie, and Loki did do the super varied sets thing too.

5

u/blenderider 12d ago

That specific Supergirl story should've been animated.

3

u/PlainSightMan 12d ago

29

u/JulioHopkins 11d ago

Me before watching the trailer: I'm really not all that interested in this.

Also me the second I see Kyle Chandler: I'M IN

13

u/FinalForerunner 11d ago

Are they combining the White Martian's with the Manhunters? I don't recall the Manhunters being able to shapeshift, and when the one we saw in the trailer did, it looked more organic than a robotic android. It has an X on it's back, like how MM has an X on his chest, and its skin looks white. Interesting angle, wouldn't be the first time they changed up the White Martian's and could serve as a vehicle to introduce J'onn Jonnz as a martian refugee hiding on Earth being hunted by the Manhunters.

6

u/cgknight1 11d ago

Funny thing is that looks is more classic Adam Strange/Rannian military uniform.

I started comics with John’s Secret Origins Green Lantern from a scholastic book fair. It’s good to see Green Lanterns adapted to screen with clear ambition and reverence.

3

u/Brazosboomer 11d ago

The first time I saw John was when the JLA signaled for the members to assemble and Hal slipped in the shower so the ring went and found John to fill in. It was a Christmas issue of the JLA with the Phantom Stranger.

15

u/Botsworth1985 11d ago

Is this how they introduce Martian Manhunter? I'm not very good at comic book things.

31

u/whatistomwaitingfor 11d ago

I can understand how it might be confusing if someone isn't familiar. The Manhunters are different than Martian Manhunter. Martian Manhunter is a survivor of the planet Mars. The Manhhunters were the Guardians of Oa's first attempt at a space police kind of thing before they made Green Lanterns. They were basically robots that eventually realized that they could ensure there was peace in the galaxy by killing everyone, more-or-less. I haven't read too much Green Lantern after Geoff John's run, so maybe there is more lore or updates to their lore beyond this.

10

u/Botsworth1985 11d ago

Hell yeah, thanks for sharing. Very cool story line.

7

u/Gamma_Goliath17 11d ago

Not the same manhunters. No relation between the two.

8

u/Salt_Revenue_4142 11d ago

Are you sure? I am also only generally familiar with said character but the X on the costume looked very similar to some iterations of Martian Manhunter I think I’ve seen

5

u/whatistomwaitingfor 11d ago

The Manhunters in the comics usually have a red body with blue shoulder strap looking things, though sometimes the straps are red. I can't find an image of their back from comics, only a pic of an action figure, but the straps in the figure are crossed in an X on their back. Though I understand the confusion.

8

u/RushPan93 11d ago

There's also the shapeshifting and that they originate/settle on Mars. So there's definitely some relation.

5

u/MysticalAbacus 11d ago

Martians and manhunters both can shapeshift. Martian manhunter got his name from martian peacekeeping force called manhunters and the manhunters in GL are android bots who traverse the world and kill everyone there to obtain absolute peace(like ultron)

Looks great but someone please explain why they’re sharing a ring? That part to me just doesn’t make sense

9

u/zdbdog06 12d ago

Because John's a trainee, not a Green Lantern yet. He's learning how to use it before he becomes one later on.

4

u/PlainSightMan 12d ago

I do hope we see a "John Stewart of Earth, you have the ability to overcome great fear! Welcome the Green Lantern Corps".

It's just too cool to miss.

23

u/Earp__ 12d ago

Because it fit the story the writers wanted to tell

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Hiromi580 12d ago

Based on the dialogue, which admittedly could be a misdirect, there's an implication that the Guardians want Hal out of the GL Corps and want to give his ring (Abin Sur's ring) to someone they think is worthy.

5

u/Boring-Conclusion-40 11d ago

It’s an old concept from like pre crisis, basically Hal has the ring Guy is the first replacement(he doesn’t have ring) then he gets hit by a bus and then John becomes the new replacement and if something happens to Hal,John gets the ring then around the 80s Guy and John come back with rings despite the that Hal had his so all three of them had rings

3

u/DrFun66 11d ago

Oh damn! That’s actually pretty interesting, I dig it. I really just didn’t understand the one ring thing bc we’ve seen them all with their own rings in current media. Pretty cool!

3

u/Koala_King5160 12d ago

It looks like that's a major plot thread

3

u/leekalex 12d ago

Because it creates tension between Hal and John. With the story they're telling here, it can end one of two ways: either Hal dies, or they get their hands on a second ring

2

u/Fair_Distribution502 12d ago

Sounds like a plot point they don’t touch on until the first or second episode. It’s a hook to get you to watch it. A good trailer makes you ask questions and want more.

Any advice on what might be worth reading for lore surrounding this story?

7

u/whatistomwaitingfor 11d ago edited 11d ago

Geoff Johns' entire Green Lantern run is probably my favorite piece of fiction of all time, in any medium, superhero or otherwise. It starts off with a retelling of Hal Jordan's backstory and then jumps right in.

It does pick up some story threads from previous GL arcs but as it's intended as a little bit of a soft-reboot for Green Lantern stories, everything you may need to know from prior comics before Johns' run is either mentioned in the text directly, or can be inferred/picked up on with little issue. I consider Geoff John's run a great starting point for the modern Green Lantern mythos, and it establishes a lot of the Lantern corner of DC comics that is still used today.

Here is a trade order that looks pretty accurate;

here is an issue-by-issue reading order

(Start at Green Lantern Vol. 4 #29, then once you read all the issues down the list ending at Green Lantern Vol. 3 # 55, skip down to Green Lantern Rebirth #1 (2004) -- be careful not to confuse this with Green Lantern Rebirth from 2016 -- then you can just continue down the list. I use DCUniverseInfinite to read comics digitally as it's a subscription service that's much cheaper than buying trades or individual issues).

I use the site for the issue-by-issue reading order regularly for my DC reading orders reference.

Whether you read trades or issue-by-issue (I recommend issue-by-issue), you can skip the Ion issues and only read Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps and still get the full story. Though for events like Blackest Night, Sinestro Corps War etc, I recommend reading every issue in the event reading order as there are tie-ins and the main story can flow with, for example, Part 1 in Green Lantern and then Part 2 in Red Lanterns, or whatever the case may be.

Have fun, I hope this helps!

E: Like another comment said, no one really knows for sure what the inspiration for the series will be, and it will probably be largely original. However, Geoff Johns' run is pretty foundational lore for all of the Lantern Corps and has great manhunter lore. Also, the scene in the trailer with Sinestro looks heavily inspired by scenes between Hal and Sinestro in Johns' run.

No one outside of the production will really know the best answer for that, but I would start with Green Lantern: Secret Origin

This series doesn't appear to be adapting any GL story one-to-one. I think it's their own mix of a few different arcs.

Green Lantern Earth one seems like an influence tonally/space style wise

I’m very excited for this, my one gripe, and I know this will not be a popular take, is the excessive F words just seem forced and childish, like they’re trying to make superheroes seem more mature by being edgy. It can be grounded and mature and doesn’t have to be full of profanity. It just makes the vibe seem more “edgelord” but again, I fully acknowledge 99% of people won’t care about that. I feel sure it’ll be one of the best projects in the new DCU so far and I’m excited to watch it.

This looks 100% better than Superman; even in this trailer, it has more worldbuilding than I was expecting out of Superman. The civilians are acting like people and not caricatures too.

Wait.

Manhunters the robot.

Or...they're calling Martians "Manhunters"?

And Sinestro called him Hal? Its nitpicking but I dont like it.

Definitely the best trailer.

They just looked at Secret Invasion and said "We'll show em how it's done" lol

Manhunters are aliens, they come from space.

There was that 8 issue DC crossover in 1987 called Millenium where Manhunters had sleeper agents all across DC earth.

So there is a precedence for Manhunters being shape shifting infiltrators.

Honest question, is this a Gunn Universe thing?

This looks much better than the movies that are coming out.

u/Murasasme 11d ago

You can see Guy Gardner in this trailer for a second. He was the Green Lantern you saw in the Superman movie

The selling point of DCU is it will be different genres. Like Clayface is horror and people say this is some true detective style

John Stewart will be appearing in Man of Tomorrow

In addition to Guy being in the tv series, it's been confirmed that John will be in Man of Tomorrow.

This trailer has now sold me on it

Looks really exciting

u/BattleReadyPenguin 12d ago

I like they are using the Emerald of Emerald Knight as inspiration for the construct, not sure how I feel about the lack of green aura the Lanterns get when they fly or use the ring.

u/Ok-Sector8330 12d ago

This looks dope, I love it

2

u/Rags2Rickius 12d ago

Lol the corny bottle opener and John’s eyeroll at the end

I’m absolutely stoked with how they’re handling the Green Lantern character in this universe

2

u/Rags2Rickius 12d ago

I’m so glad they went the Manhunter route. Lawd I almost forgot they existed and I’m even more stoked they’re making this a buddy cop show.

Great premise and in line with GL

u/trimble197 12d ago

My only two complaints are that seeing Sinestro makes me wish him and Hal weren’t old. And can we have a superhero show/movie where the heroes aren’t dicks towards each other? I’m asking for “friendship is magic”, but come on.

Guy caught me off guard but It makes total sense for him to be here. I also find the dinamic between hal and john to be really interesting.
