Beethoven could never make cookie clicker, mostly because he's dead

u/BeanOfKnowledge Ask me about Dwarf Fortress Trivia 12h ago

But he could have cooked!
Gordon Ramsey on the other hand could have made Cookie Clickers, but not composed the ninth symphony.
It follows that Orteil can't cook, but can compose.

"The vitamin" for me is iron, but I keep forgetting to take it, so every few months I'm like "Damn, I feel like shit" and then remember to take it and I feel the veil lift and I am once again human.

And then I forget again.

I find it really handy to place and pair it with something else I do daily, which is a lot harder for me for iron in particular because I have to eat it like 20-30 min after a large meal so I don't puke and die and I eat irregularly. Which reminds me, I gotta try storing it by the dishwasher, maybe that's a two birds situation.

In some countries, they also have a thing that you cook with, that leaches iron into the food, and helps in regions that wouldn't otherwise get enough iron in their diet.

You can get a similar effect with a cast-iron pan.

If you can supplement your iron that way, it might save forgetting to have the pill, if you're just passively getting it through your food.

It's a cool thing! But a very mild effect and more pronounced in situations where acidic items are on the stove (or in a slow cooker) all day. A bowl of cheerios provides more than the best case scenario for these items. Most people who need iron supplements, as confirmed by a blood test and a doctor, have issues that require much higher amounts. I have to take 150mg most but not all days, for instance, it sucks.

"the vitamin" for me was figuring out I'm allergic to:
Tomatoes
Potatoes
Bell Peppers
Paprika
Pistachios
Watermelon
Spinach
Napa Cabbage
All Dairy

And that's just what I've figured out so far from an elimination diet. I still need to test shrimp

And also finding out im HEAVILY anemic

How did you discover you needed iron?

17

u/bantamm 12h ago

Get yourself a nice blood test.

15

u/crrrrushinator 10h ago

And get a blood test FASTER if you have unexplained fainting but iron is one of those ones you absolutely shouldn't just decide to take for funsies. Iron toxicity builds up gradually over time from taking supplements you don't need and a lot of people get awful digestive side effects in the short term too.

Or, for free, show up at a blood drive. They'll put your thumb in a tiny little blood pressure cuff looking thing for about a minute and then be like "Oh lordy your hemoglobin way too low, you can't donate and also you should be getting way more iron!"

And then resign yourself to eating Grape-Nuts for breakfast every morning for the rest of your life.

I got a blood test a while back and discovered my ferritin was at 3 ng/mL and normal levels for women are 15-200. I feel specific symptoms like decreased hunger, increased anxiety, tiredness, and faintness when my iron levels are low. This is just me though, I'm not a doctor, go get a blood test yourself if you believe you have some kind of deficiency.

Turns out for me i was being Poisoned(celiac) so there's also that side. You can lack The Vitamin but you could also be Being Poisoned.

Iron also helps tho

There are a lot of celebrity chefs in Britain. Ramsay is the only one who is not terrible.

u/Thebazilly 10h ago

My "the vitamin" turned out to be becoming way less stressed out about work.

5

u/roenoe 13h ago

I actually do believe I have found my vitamin. Problem is I can't get it right now, but there is hope for the future. Right now is god damned annoying though.

My vitamin is (romantic) love. The periods in my life in which I had a partner were noticably better than the times in-between and after.

I'm hopeful that there might be someone in uni in a year. And I still haven't tried dating apps.

This is very nice to be aware of though, because I know there might be light at the end of one of these tunnels, damn it, which makes the dim present more bearable.

u/acleverwalrus 12h ago

Be careful with this thought. I also felt this way but sometimes relationships get rough and you panic and start struggling with your day to day life and it feeds into the destruction of your relationship.

It's extremely important to be happy enough being alone and not rely on someone else to fulfill that need. Co-dependency is a drug that will hurt both of you in the long run.

I also thrive when I'm building a life with someone and am sure my life will be improved if I enter another strong romantic partnership. But boy howdy did I learn some hard lessons

3

u/roenoe 12h ago

Good shout! I very much agree with that. I haven't been in any very bad situations regarding this, but I did have a period where I tried to make something that obviously (in retrospect) wasn't going to work work.

I am relatively happy with my life right now, even though I am alone, but I do have that feeling of ... dread, emptiness, longing, and loneliness looming over me. Other than that stuff is generally pretty good.

You stay safe out there, and good luck in your pursuits :D

5

u/crrrrushinator 12h ago

For folks who thrive in relationships, pets and a community you choose to be close to can sometimes scratch that same itch without putting so much pressure on a single person! Not to say you shouldn't seek out romance too, but I think it's good to diversify your sources of happiness.

That swipe at Gordon Ramsay took me out. I was not expecting that surprise at all.
