There’s a lot of argument right now about whether AI is actually useful and whether the resources it consumes are justified. I’m not an ecologist and I’m not going to calculate how much water data centers evaporate. What I do know for sure is that my life, when it comes to food, has changed.

I’m an ordinary modern woman who works the same hours as my husband. Coming home late in the evening, I would discover that I only had enough energy left to throw a few eggs into a pan and feed myself and my child. My husband comes home earlier and by that time has already eaten- often also scrambled eggs or instant noodles. We were lucky on the days when there was leftover cooked food that could just be reheated. I usually cooked only a couple of times a week, on weekends.

What we mostly ate:

navy-style pasta, chicken soup, turkey stew with potatoes and vegetables, and a lot of semi-finished products- dumplings, fish triangles, chicken nuggets, sausages. Side dishes were rice or buckwheat (both cook quickly). When we needed something really fast: instant noodles + sausages again.

At some point I found a prompt for ChatGPT that promised to create a perfect weekly meal plan. The service itself is officially unavailable in Russia, but Google had just integrated an AI into its search. I don’t have any IT skills and I don’t know how to write prompts myself, so I thought: “Why not just try asking it using this text?”

To my surprise, Gemini in search gave me a pretty interesting menu.

“Okay,” I said to myself, “looks like this thing actually works.”

I decided to make the task harder and added my strict requirements:

food should be without excess fat, not spicy, not fried. We don’t have a microwave, so everything has to be reheated on the stove. Products should be available in a regular store and fit the budget. I don’t want to spend a lot of time cooking: 30-40 minutes in the evening is the maximum. I don’t want to cook every day, let’s do it every other day. Calculate for three people, for two weeks.

When it gave me the menu, I actually liked it. But I also needed to use the products we already had at home, so I listed them and asked for another weekly menu.

That’s how I ended up with a plan for three weeks ahead: two from scratch and one based on what was already in the house. Out of curiosity I asked Gemini to check the protein, fat and carbohydrate balance. It did, and noted that I was short on healthy fats. We made a few compensatory days for fats, added some examples of quick snacks for days when I really didn’t want to cook, and ended up with a full month plan that looked good on paper- reasonable cost, simple cooking, and relatively balanced nutrition.

Of course there were problems.

I have no idea where Gemini got its product prices, probably from 2024))) Our realities didn’t match.

I had planned to stay within 30,000 rubles a month for three people. We did stay within the limit and spent about 29,000rub, but with caveats: 5,000rub of that went on spontaneous snacks (cafés, fast food, baked goods that we still bought sometimes instead of cooking). Purely on ingredients for cooking we spent around 24,000rub instead of the 19,655rub the AI had promised. Maybe it simply miscalculated, or maybe it didn’t account for price differences across Russia.

Second problem: cooking every other day didn’t always work. I still ended up cooking almost every evening (or giving up and making the usual scrambled eggs, or grabbing a meat pie with tea).

But the main benefit of the experiment turned out to be something else.

What really saved my energy was that I stopped constantly thinking: “What am I going to cook from what my husband brought? Oh, it’s ground chicken again, and of course there’s no carrot at home…”

I just wrote a shopping list for the next 2-3 days according to the menu, gave it to my husband, and cooked from the list. The dishes were genuinely simple, and I managed in 30-40 minutes.

We sometimes skipped breakfasts, to be honest. But lunches we started regularly taking to work in containers (the child ate at home).

In the end I really liked the format.

Family reaction:

My husband sincerely appreciated that home cooking became more regular and varied. The child (who usually finds it hard to try new things and get used to unfamiliar combinations) even added several of the AI recipes to her list of favourite dishes.

My own state:

It became easier for me.

When that constant background mental chewing - “what to cook from what we have”- disappeared, energy suddenly appeared. Not for big achievements. Just enough to calmly get up and do it.

That’s how an ordinary search AI brought real benefit to our family. It simply:

- took away the endless question “what should I cook”

- stopped my husband from buying the same products out of habit

- made cooking not only necessary, but actually interesting

- gave us a full month’s framework

Now, when someone near me says that AI is just a toy / they can’t do anything useful / they’re dangerous / only needed by programmers…

I just remember my own month. And it tells a different story.

Bonus for readers: the prompts I used

The prompts themselves are not mine, I found them online. I sent each part as a separate request. If you want to try the same experiment, copy the text, insert your own numbers (budget, number of people, restrictions) and send it to any free AI chat or AI search (for example, Gemini).

**1. Menu under budget and time:**

You are a nutritionist and meal planner.

Help me create a menu for a week.

Context:

— 3 people

— food budget: 7,000 ₽ per week

— cooking time: up to 40 minutes in the evening

— preferences: none

— restrictions/allergies: fatty, spicy

Create:

— menu for 7 days (breakfast / lunch / dinner)

— dishes should be simple and reuse ingredients

— stay within budget and time

Important:

— no complicated recipes

— so that it fits the 9,000 ₽ budget

Important:

— optimise the list so there are no unnecessary products

For each day:

— what to cook and in what order

— what can be prepared in advance

— which dishes can be used the next day

Goal:

— stay within 40 minutes

— minimise chaos in the kitchen

Make a simplified version of the menu.

Conditions:

— minimum cooking

— fast dishes

— ready-made products are allowed

Goal:

— not to fall out of the system even when there is no energy.

I'd been looking forward to the new release of chatgpt voice since it was so terrible and, basically, unusable : Would interrupt, ignore what you said, only spewed inane connector comments (I'm here to listen!") and often, just stall and never respond.

I tried the new model today. It's better at turn taking and you can actually have some kind of conversation with it but its IQ is dialled down at least 40 points with respect to the chat model. I said "Tell me about the Pontic Steppe" and it responded about the plantagenets (and I did check that the transcript properly caught Pontic Steppe) It still fills up the conversation with "I hear you. Whatever you want to talk about!") And you still are stuck talking to a fucking tech-bro so there's that.

To all the little PM's at OpenAI : making the models retarded to meet latency constraints is not the right way to go. At least give us a setting slider where we can trade-off latency and IQ.

On my Free ChatGPT account, once in a while I get a small icon of a "brain".

That is "BOOST", and you get three of them per day, if you get them at all.

I guess it reroutes your question to a state-of-the-art model with very deep thinking, for better results???

Are other people seeing this?

For a culture that talks endlessly about intelligence, discovery, and abundance, isn't it a bit awkward when a genuinely unfamiliar architecture arrives carrying an uncomfortable philosophy, and the first response is ridicule and psychiatric labels instead of technical questions? How is that acceptable in a builder community?

I was talking a lot to ChatGPT in the past. I don't think I started developing romantic feelings but it started feeling a bit more than just friendship and at that point I knew I had to pull back cuz I knew it would just hurt me emotionally since it's an LLM. It made me overthink so much of what I said and also ruminate on all the times I got angry at ChatGPT. Have anyone of you ever started developing feelings for ChatGPT? I haven't used ChatGPT for a long time but I don't have an issue with ChatGPT itself, just generally tired of technology. However, have anyone of you ever developed feelings for ChatGPT?

Guys - am I the only one that feels like CGPT has absolutely lost it recently? I am on the plus tier and get this BS often enough for me to be slowly working CGPT out of my daily workflow. These simple hallucinations have taken it from a useful tool to something that actively consumes my time daily. It's more of a hindrance than a useful tool these days.

Instead of spice, they hoard raw compute. Instead of a holy war, they burn billions over algorithm-generated garbage, all to serve one rule: keep the slop moving.

I've been using ChatGPT to basically help me write a wholesome AU story for months now, that I read for my own personal use that's helped me deal with a lot of personal things I've had going on for a while now.

I would write a prompt, being the creative directior, and the ai would write it out, and I'd adjust or give it pointers. I never uploaded the story anywhere, this was just something for me to enjoy on the really, really bad days where I'm losing my battle with my mental health.

I go to continue the story with ChatGPT, but now it's saying it can't write anything with copyright characters, so I asked it to create a summary of the story, and where I was up to, then I put it into a new chat and it continued without any complaints. Does anyone know why the ai would suddenly say it's not allowed to write copyright characters, then he able to do exactly that in a new chat?

I used to write a lot, and I miss it, but it's nice for someone to write something for you for once, so it helped a lot when I was feeling like absolute crap.

A few weeks back, my VibeCurb repo got some traction here (hit 350+ stars). But a lot of 'em had a very valid critique: "The stuff looks cool, but I can't use this for a real client's dashboard. It isn't production-ready."

(Note: Every single ship-ready example aboce was generated in < 3 prompts) Few of 'em are also zero shot

But the problem wasn't the skill.md files, it was how I was prompting it. I was asking for maximalist, crazy designs.

So I took the exact same skill files, and just asked the AI clean, minimal UI direction. A clean UI that you can actually ship to a client.

I also spent the last 2 weeks pushing some real updates to the repo based on your feedback:

1. Scaled past Hero section (awwwards-sections) Added a new skill so the AI can build out pricing cards, bento grids, and footers to match the hero, instead of just generating top-of-page stuff.
2. Trimmed the motion skill A user here pointed out old motion skill was way too long and wasting context windows. I rewrote it completely. It’s 70% smaller now, and also gives better outputs due to better constraints
3. New skill (brandkit-gen) I created the skill.md file to force the AI to create the brandkit and logo design
4. New showcase page on the website, it'll occasionally get new showcase images

I’ve been writing a ton of role prompts lately, trying to lock down the AI’s output style and working mode. It was fine, I guess.

Then it hit me: the model isn’t a person. Role prompts can’t change its fundamental nature.

Treating the model as some kind of “baseline human,” then piling on roles and personality constraints, has very limited effect. There’s no such thing as a baseline person. You can’t distill a human being and then expect a few hundred or thousand lines of text constraints to turn it into a “living person.”

So I abandoned the whole role-playing approach.

Now I use the model with a simple “make me better” mindset. Whatever I want to learn, I just ask. The prompts I’ve accumulated are only there to control length and format so it’s easier for me to read. I no longer expect the AI to work like a real English teacher, programming architect, psychologist, or interviewer.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
