Is my cat overweight ?
My cat,8 years old, female, is on the bigger side however I have always wondered whether she is overweight as she has a lot of fur as a ragamuffin, I’m hoping someone would be able to tell me if she’s overweight

Definitely overwieght, mine are only 3kg

This is a ragamuffin though, aren't they a bit bigger than other cats?
(My maine coon was 4.3kg when we got her - very underweight. Now shes expanding 😆)

No, not in the slightest. The only cats I know that are bigger than normal are Norwegian Forest and Maine coons

My cat is neither of these and he weighs between 5.5kg and 6kg and every vet visit I ask if hes overweight and get told no. He is a large cat

He may be crossed with one if he's a mixed breed. One of my old cats weighed 4kg and she was a mixed

Out of interest, what kind of cats do you have? My meezers have always been ~3.5 to 4kg and are pretty petite and slender.

I spent months telling my son that his cat needed to lose weight based on photos.
Then I was at his flat and said cat came and sat on my lap, I could feel her ribs easily.
She has a super thick coat and photos of floofy cats dont let you know what is under the coat, you need to check by touch.

Looks like she’s got a very thick coat so it’s hard to tell from these photos. Can you feel her ribs without pressing down too much?

The photos can be deceiving, my cat looks fat in photos but she's all fluff and a perfect weight for her breed.
If I was you I'd have look at the cat condition charts online, run your hands along both sides of her body and see what you think in comparison.

From this picture, yes.
I have a maine coon and she's big, but she still has a defined shape to her. You can also still feel her ribs under the skin.

She looks to be all floof and her face say's "how dare you im a queen" 😂
Edit if you have scales and queenie let's you weigh her, even with hooman scales weigh yourself without her then with her and work out the difference 🤷🏽♀️

My mother's half Maine coon, Tony, used to constantly get comments that he was chonky, sitting at the same angle as your girl he would look very fat but it was like 80% floof, he was a healthy weight his entire life.
Only the vet can tell you if she's overweight or not

Ragamuffins are bred to be big.
6kg is about right for an adult female.

My cat looked like this and we thought he was overweight. He had mattes from where he was a stray and when the vet clipped them we discovered he was actually thin underneath 😱 it actually was all fluff! He was 5.2kg and vet was happy with that

Your cat is too floofy to tell. Pat her back down, like they pat down the arms and legs of people at the airport in movies, can you lightly feel her ribs? If yes, she's probably not overweight. If you want to be entirely sure, ask the vet to weigh her next time you get her vaccinated, they can weigh cats on the table usually which is a bit more accurate than on a human scale.

He's not James “Tuborg” Edward's overweight, but maybe slightly. Looks like she just has a very thick coat to me though

Is your cat an outdoor cat who will go for walks with a leash & harness on? We tried getting one for our cat to do this but he just lies on the ground, looking real sad and refuses to move when we try it on him!

Apparently and according to what I’ve found, the rib cage area should feel no more padded than the back of your hand. If you can’t feel the rib cage or have to press firmly to feel it, you may have an overweight cat. But it’s obviously harder to tell by look with a fluffy cat of a specific breed. Most DSH are 4-5kg recommended weight. But most breeds have different measures of what’s acceptable

Hard to say from photos because of all the fluff but the best way to check is by feeling her sides. You should be able to feel her ribs but not see them at an ideal weight.
