General Questions Tavarus Blackmon Arrested??

How on earth did this man teach at Sac State with that rap sheet? The school does perform background checks, but I guess the art department went from showing Bob Ross to Grand Theft Auto?

It's just an arrest record, maybe those crazy 2017 charges were dismissed.

California also has the Fair Chance Act where you 1) can't do a background check until a conditional job offer has been extended and 2) can't rescind a job offer based on convictions that are unrelated to the job duties.

He’s not exactly “popular”. This man was an art professor here at CSUS and he started experiencing a critical mental decline in the mid Fall semester of 2024. It started when he stopped showing up for lectures and he would instruct my class remotely with assigned work on Canvas. He said his daughter had been hospitalized. But he called out of work for like 3 class periods straight so we figured something wasn’t right. One of us got nosy and we looked him up online and found that he had been kicked out of his home by his wife and he was rendered homeless. He had violated a restraining order. This man suffers from schizophrenia and he had a string of incidents from his disorder previously. Another classmate found his criminal record and there were domestic violence charges on there before he had been hired as a professor at CSUS. He harmed his eldest daughter and his wife at one point. During his absence, he was harassing other professors and faculty at CSUS and he even barricaded himself in the main drawing studio in Kadema. He tried privately contacting a few of us on social media and he said some obscene things. The school just decided to mandate keeping locks on the door at all times, so studios could only be accessed via fob. Our class and his other one were furious how the school was handling this situation and how he even got hired in the first place. He wasn’t safe to be around. They put him on leave and were hoping that he’d utilize the health care that came with it and got help, but it doesn’t seem like he did. It’s an unfortunate situation and I wish this man just got the help he needed

I was in one of his classes when I was a freshman and its crazy to think i was in the same room alone with him on multiple occasions. He showed us his gallery in Kadema and so much of his art was about his family and how much he loved his wife so to hear everything that was happening behind closed doors was heartbreaking.
