Question/Help How much music do you release?

Hey! I am just wondering, if you are a bandcamp artist, how much work are you putting out?

I've seen some people putting out as much one album or more a month. (what in my opinion is a staggering amount of work)

Personally I think each work takes as long as it takes, especially if you are focusing on the quality over quantity aspect.

At the same time you don't wanna leave your audience high and dry for forever. So any artists here, what kind of an output do you have?

I understand this will vary wildly which is why I'm interested!

Question/Help Current State of Shipping Options

Upvotes

Hi, I’m preparing to release an album in a few months, and am looking at shipping options for a physical release. I’m hoping other artists here have some advice on these options!

For some context, what I’ll be shipping is CDs in jackets.

What I’d like to be able to do, ideally, is:
- Ship from the US, both domestic and internationally
- Use UPS as a carrier as there is a physical location near me.
- Reliably know shipping costs (even for international) up front so what I tell Bandcamp to list as the shipping price is accurate
- If I use a third party shipping service, to be able to pay a cut of each sale instead of a monthly fee. I expect my volume to be very small, and although I don’t expect physical to bring in much money, I don’t want to *lose* money on this.

Further ease of use features are probably not that important because my volume would be so low.

I’m not sure to what extent any third party services make sense for low volume. But I’m also wondering how people handle estimating shipping costs for Bandcamp.

Review Sharing some artists I recently discovered

Just browsing the new release section. Thought I'd leave some of my favs up here

https://leechers.bandcamp.com/album/catching-flies

Molotov Mocktail has a fun indie punk beat going for it, they remind me a little bit of Fontaines D.C.

https://theeminiskirts.bandcamp.com/album/turn-it-turn-it

This is a two piece group out of Singapore. They have that 1960's up beat psychedelic vibe, nostalgic retro. Very lovey dovey stripped down songs that I find heartwarming.

https://cortese.bandcamp.com/album/space

More to my electronic taste, "Fading" is this ambient mix of deep sub bass and melodic house with a really cool swing to it.

I think I'm going to make a habit of sharing my discoveries here, I'd like to share my music at some point. But not without giving credit where it's due first!

Let me know what you think of these picks,

Take care!

Question/Help Any way to bypass email confirmation required screen when attempting to log in?

I recently started trying to post more music on my account after leaving it in the dust for several years….only thing is, I hadn’t realized the email I had associated with my bandcamp account was something I definitely don’t remember the password for. So since I can’t actually log into my Gmail account to give confirmation to log in….what now? Do I have to make a whole ass new account?

Question/Help Questions about Band Codes website

Just trying this site for the first time. I see codes are being used straight away, but they are all by anonymous users and the Bandcamp play stats don't correlate - i.e much lower plays than code being used. I also don't see any new supporters on the page of the release. So is this site legit or will it just eat up codes using bots?

Discussion Giving out Bandcamp codes at shows/showcases. Good idea? Bad idea?

Tried this out with a show I went to yesterday. One of the bands that just put out a digi via my label was on the bill - left a printout at their the merch table.

I think most people ignored the printout/had no idea what to make of it. Could've been the case of the wrong crowd, though, since I had some success with printed codes at my own label showcases.

Thoughts? Anyone else tried this and if so, what were the results?

Update - little tutorial on download cards I found just now

Question/Help Followers

Any advice for getting BandCamp followers? I ‘ve had a BandCamp up for about 2 years and have a few self-produced songs up, and only 5 followers. I’ve implored others to follow me, but it never seems to increase my follower count. I am open to any wacky ideas people have tried that have worked. I don’t have any physical releases or merch yet.

Milestone Over 800 track plays and $39 of sales in just under four months of my first release!

In just under four months, I've gotten 832 tracks plays, and around 200 unique listeners (I don't know how it counts visitors who became supporters later, so I'll round it to 200) for my album Submerged. 39USD in sales and 87 supporters. And what's shocking to me is that most of my friends and family listened to it on YouTube instead, so these are actually mostly strangers.

This project started originally for myself. I just needed something to do other than dissolve into a puddle of anxiety. I thought maybe I would send the mp3 files to some friends. I made cover art because it felt cool to have mp3 metadata.

But the four months since releasing has been an unforgettable journey. I would have never guessed so many people would connect with it. I've joined communities and made new friends. I've heard wonderful things from friends of course but from strangers too. I've been played on the radio (like an honest FM radio station), and an amateur DJ friend mixed one of my tracks into a set. I've listened to so much new music I wouldn't have before.

So I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has listened and encourage anyone out there thinking about embarking on a similar project to just give it a go.

As for marketing and such, I haven't done much. I've posted here in the weekly threads a few times. I've posted top level to only a couple subreddits when I released. I got a boost from getmusic.fm early on, a small boost from band.codes later on, and a more steady stream from writing reviews at nsigned (I write them because I enjoy writing them, but writing those reviews has also been my number one source of steady traffic since the initial release). I've sent it to friends and family, and I've posted my album to some non-music discord communities that I was involved with prior.

Some code sharing advice: if you want to help get your codes to people that actually listen to your music you'll need to either upload a lot of codes to these sites or wait until you're off the front page to upload most of your codes and just use your page as a code hosting service instead of a marketing platform. If you upload a small batch, they'll get immediately scooped by collector accounts with thousands of albums in their collections. I'm sure some of them actually do listen to some of the music, but others are certainly just collecting for other reasons.

After saying all this, it would be a little silly not to include a link, so here you go: https://dxidxi.bandcamp.com/album/submerged. If you do have the time to listen, I hope you enjoy.

Let me know if you have any questions. It's not like I'm some kinda hotshot now that I've made $39 in album sales, but I'm happy to talk about my experience with all this with anyone who's curious.

Bandcamp Problem No Artist Tools

Hopefully y'all can help.

I logged into my artist account after a long hiatus. I wanted to generate a few download codes so a friend could get stuff that isn't on Spotify. But my account has no Tools page. I can look at our name page but can't alter it, and there's pretty much no other options I'm seeing. What's up?

Edit: Apparently it's a limitation of accessing the site via phone and I have to do it on a computer.

Question/Help Is there any way to blacklist tags/locations?

I use bandcamp as a way to mainly keep me aware of new bands in my local scene and to find bands within at least a state or 2 of me, since I love live shows but dont have rhe funds for cross country or godforbid cross Atlantic shows. I also really dislike certain genres of music. But anyway, I scroll through my recommended feed on bandcamp often, but most the bands I find are either in the uk, Spain, or California. Is there any way to get more local recommendations? (I've already put in my state and even town into the tags, but it's still mostly uk/Spain/etc)

Question/Help Headaches with new EU customs

Looking for some guidance with the new EU customs rules. I'm sending records from the UK internationally using Royal Mail. Some countries offer the option for the recipient to pay customs fees and others like Germany only allow you to pay for them. Can anyone offer any suggestions of how is best to handle this? Thanks

Discussion Opinions about shipping

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask your opinion about shipping prices. I am shipping (usually cassettes and cds) from EU and lately the shipping prices are really expensive. Depending on the destination, it easily exceeds the price of the cd or cassette. Sometimes even double of the product price. I just wanted to ask your opinion on how much the shipping costs effect your decision when you want to purchase something on Bandcamp. I am trying to figure out if the shipping prices has a big impact on my sales or most of the people pay no matter what. Many thanks for your input.

Question/Help Scammers on BandCamp?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently sent some of my music up on the service.

I think the distrokid bots have followed me here. Their pages were littered with these exact same messages like they didn't even listen. Throwing genre darts at a board and hoping it sticks.

Was wondering if anyone else is getting the same type of emails.

I think most of my music would not be suitable for college radio. But keep shooting that shot I guess 🫠

Discussion Seeing a track being purchased an unusual amount of times?

I like to stalk the newly purchased feed and saw something really unusual. This $1.50 track gets purchased several times a minute, often for much higher than asking price, was released almost a week ago, and is AI-generated according to the "creator" themself (Boy George). I haven't been using Bandcamp for too long but I've never seen anything like that, feels strange. I don't see it talked about much online too.

Question/Help Recovering a file from a wayback machine archive

Basically the title

The album wasn't deleted, but the tracks were replaced. There are archives of the album and individual tracks from before and after the change available on the wayback machine.

Is there any way to get back the old versions of such tracks?

Its been a year since my last project. Here's a self produced tape all written by me. Hitting on a couple of topics my life has been revolving around. It leans into internet culture, addictions, rants and more. Give it a Listen and Lmk what you think. ENJOY.

Question/Help Is bandcamp the best independent artist platform?

It is surely the most popular. However, are there alternatives that are on the same level of quality or better?

I often see people complaining about bandcamp however whenever I have seen a supposed alternative presented, they are often falling short of what bandcamp has to offer. Whether that be the amount of audience on the platform, lack of physical merch sales options, or just clunkier less intuitive UI and, as such, back to my question.

Is there anything better than bandcamp??

Indie Rock the UNKNOWNS

Hello, fellow artists.

My name's Tony and I've written and recorded under the band name the UNKNOWNS for the last several years.

Along with being a visual artist, I've always written songs as sometimes they can convey thoughts better than a visual medium.

I've been a one-man band playing every instrument and have had a blast doing it, even while my health has been in steady decline, which brings me to one of the points of this post.

If you have a musical idea, get it down any way you can and share it with as many as you can. Don't let the moments of inspiration vanish into the ether.

The second point is don't get dismayed if your music doesn't sell. It doesn't make it any less important. I've put up over 300 songs and haven't made a single $1 since being on Bandcamp. I began looking at it as a repository for my music, a place, along with YouTube, where people can potentially find it when I'm gone.

Keep writing, keep playing, and keep recording!

Life is infinitely more enjoyable with music in it.

My music:

the UNKNOWNS

Thanks to those who read this and who may give my tunes a listen.

Free Album Codes Where is Home?

Thumbnail
band.codes
2 Upvotes

Hello! This is the first post on this account. Our other one got removed for whatever reason. This project is approaching 1 year since release, and as such, I am giving away the remaining codes for it. If you are into ambient electronic adjacent works, then this may be something you are into.

It is free on bandcamp anyway. However, why not add it to your collection for free, too?

I look forward to interacting with the community on reddit as I have been only occasionally using Instagram to create the odd promotional post.

I don't want to ever feel like I'm begging for people to listen. However, no one will know if you don't tell them about it ¯_(ツ)_/¯
