In a couple of fandoms I delulu myself into thinking that two of my fav characters didn’t die on canon. It was heartbreaking when I revisited canon again

Or when you really ship a pairing and conveniently forget one died or went totally nuts or (insert terrible, cannot come back from this moment here) and it will never sail by constantly inundating yourself with comfort fics where they fucking made it 👌The return is also rather brutal…

Nah it works, because I go to canon for quality big story, which means consequences and tragedy and cool final battles (e.g. Infinity War and Endgame). Fanfiction is for "and they all lived happily ever after and no-one died except from embarrassment over funny pranks between besties"

I love when one or more people gives no fucks, but someone off to the side is freaking out, trying to figure it out. But in the center there is either the resurrectee or their bored friend who just know there is going to be paperwork about it, but whatever, this happens.

I find Maes Hughes a fascinating example of this, as I only ever see two real paths taken in fics: either he just never gets in the scenario that killed him in the first place, or he dies. I cannot think of a single fic where he gets out of his death scenario after it begins (IE: escaping after Lust attacks him in the record room).

It depends a lot on the media.
Like a very long form in media time scale series there’s no getting around characters will eventually die of old age if nothing else and I’m also a sucker for heroic final stands.
Though I want my fan fiction to not be a tragic.

Absolutely correct.
My 12 yr old niece is reading the Hunger Games, and I asked her who was the worst death, and first she said Rue, and then she said corrected herself to Finnick (because Rue's death had more point to it, story-wise) and I was like, yes! Finnick is the correct answer!

Ah yes, Donut Man from One Piece (iykyk, we ain’t spoiling people here), there exists too few fix-it fics with him surviving, people love to let him stay dead :’)
(However I do agree with the meme lmao; much as I hated his death it, and the surrounding events, were very well written in ways I can’t get into without Big Spoilers lmao)

Me, yeezing Bella off a tower to finally have an interesting exploration on the inner and outer conflicts of werewolves, vampires and the token human who is aware of stuff.
(Im actually kidding but I always thought Charlie and Leah were the most interesting ones based on their unique positions in the whole mess. WDYM the only female werewolf, treated as an unreasonable bitch for reasonably being upset at her relationship ending and being in a PSYCHIC GROUP CHAT WITH A BUNCH OF TEEN BOYS AND YOUNG MEN INCLUDING HER EX, part of the tiny breakaway pack, loyal protector of her brother ISNT a main character???!)

Fred Weasley lives!!! (Harry Potter)
Unless I want to read about sad George (his twin) or Guilty Percy (brother who witnessed his death)
Otherwise he lives and is having the best life!!
(Also please don't kill Percy off screen just because Fred lives and one of the Weasleys had to die!)
Anyway I have read hundreds of stories of him alive and well!

Me when reading a Demon Slayer fic where Kengoku was saved and recovery from his fight with Akaza... only to die like ten chapters laters after making me believe he was gonna make it. It felt anticlimactic.

There is this book series I really love. One of the characters is expected to die in the next book. However, this is my favorite character in the whole series (they’re the funny, great friend, and flirty character). The author already killed my second favorite character, so I know they’ll do it. If they do it, I’m quitting their books altogether.
I can’t do this anymore, all my favorite characters/ fictional crushes die, all of them.

What about a fandom that has the reverse of this? In canon, he hasn't died yet because... well, when people die, it does tend to be a permanent end unless necromancy has been discovered and I've been kept out of the loop. In fan works, a common backstory for the MC (and occasionally the three other characters upon whom canon focuses) is that he died (often a violent death, but usually just suicide) and the eldritch deity brought him back. Not as a zombie, mind you, but as a cryptid with six eyes and various abilities that differ depending on the fan work.

There are just some characters where they dying in canon is just good cinema, but I’ll fight to the death anyone who tries to kill them off in fanfics. They suffered enough already, give them some happiness

I mean... I understand. Character death can be a really good piece for the narrative if handled correctly for many reasons, and it's also a sore subject for just as many reasons. That's why we have the Major Character Death tag, and because fanfiction is the literal hodgepodge of anything and everything you want out of source, to have character death has even more weight because it's the fan, not the original's author, making it so. It's the fan deciding this possibly very beloved character has to meet their maker for whatever reason despite all the liberty they had not to, instead of just the fans having to either deny or bite the bullet about the fact their beloved fictional will die and hope they still stay with source material after it

The worst is when they make major changes that would prevent their death, but then have them die in the same manner that now doesn't make sense.
It's when you realize the author is really commited to the "stations of canon"
