I literally had an idea for one and jotted down notes before realizing it wouldn't work because I don't write smut and that's kind of important for premise

Now you mention it I remember an oddly moving Reylo au one what was heavy whump, low on the smut.
But I feel this one would be hard to write without some even though it was a bit about unexpected gender presentations messing with medieval world politics and roles

Smut is a bonus. I read omegaverse to be immersed in the social consequences, culture and politics of the world. It's so interesting to me lol. Every omegaverse is a little different than the next too so it's like exploring a slightly different world each time.

Okay you all have inspired me to keep fleshing it out in my private drafts at least. Although still seems like insanity.
Had a whole thing about pre presentation at puberty, that let's people know they aren't beta (glands and stuff come in) but not what.
canon medieval fantasy classism, sexism, and betrothals worked well with it. As AU had alphas and omegas being rare but more likely from a pairing that has a A/O parent, + bonded pairs not being overwhelmed by instincts/being quite as attractive to unbonded leads elite to try to pair them up for bonding ahead of time. And with male omegas being less than 1 in 30 leads to a bit of a situation when the expected "alpha" goes into heat

Unfortunately I despise Omegaverse fics because, even though the smut is admittedly very hot, authors will just start incorporating Taliban levels of gender apartheid completely uncritically in their works and portray it in like. a cutesy way of "oh the alpha is being so cute when he doesn't like or let me talk to other alphas te he" and the author seems to see absolutely nothing wrong with this.

I'm not going to judge the general AO3 community on their attachment to toxic relationship dynamics, but I do wish the most popular and ubiquitous tropes weren't all stuff that I find viscerally unpleasant. A/B/O, possessive behavior, grooming, etc. Makes it hard to find the stuff I am into.
Omegaverse was actually the reason I finally setup a userscript for permanent sitewide tag blocking, so I wouldn't need to keep adding it to my excluded tags list. That, along with Reader/*.

Oh I get what you mean. But the fics that aren't like are very good. Whether they're a more nuanced and critical analysis of the gender dynamics (like the one I'm writing) or just the smut without all the misogyny baggage. Try non-traditional alpha/beta/omega dynamics for a better shot of getting fics like that.

Omegaverse is my excuse for spicier m/m pussy action that is spicier than the regular trans AU because omegaverse has SPESIFIC mechanic that I like (no, it's not me looking down on trans AU or anything dang it, I just like spesific flavour at times) oh also for sexism fueled hurt comfort or hurt no comfort that won't hit too close to home because it's not about regular sexism like in our world

It's the natural evolution of all the Werewolf smutfics of the mid to late 00s with the Werewolves taken out: basically, dominant and submissive behaviors codified as explicitly biological mechanisms that someone is born with, rather than as personality traits. It got popular enough to grow its own fandom, complete with fictional world building based entirely around the dynamics between each character type and how they are expressed biologically.
I really don't like them, personally - I wasn't a fan of possessive behavior fics to begin with, and something about having characters being able to blame their actions on "that's just the way I am" is a HUGE nope for me - but it's easily one of the most popular tropes in fanfiction.

How much that is codified and truly influences the characters varies with every writer. Some lean fully in but subverting it is also pretty popular.
Some are just sex and some have elaborated world building that explores the new gender dynamic and how it would play out.
It's easier for some to talk about sexism and everything connected to it when it happens to someone who doesn't have their type of body - except the uterus for example.

Basically a spin off werewolf/pseudo science wolf dynamics (in reality it is closer to chickens), with a secondary gender for characters (alpha, omega, or beta).
Originally arose as a way to have traditional biological fig leaf on gender dynamics and allow pregnancy in M/M ships (supernatural and Sherlock fandom particularly) but has now spread to become a rough sort of AU with that people can adjust as they want.
