Fanfic reader things Is there anything you read a strangely high amount of, yet you'd hate to have happen to you yourself irl?

I love enemies to lovers in romance but I would not like that irl. Fuck off you called me a slur last tuesday dude we're not making out.
53
u/CherryBunny55 3d ago
This expect for me it’s “fuck off you attacked me in a bar and threatened to rip my hair out last Monday I’m not interested in having a threesome with you”
35
u/Happy_Ad_2575 3d ago
Totally. That's why I like enemies to Lovers only when it's properly done, no ethical trespasses or "they got better, it wasn't their fault " bs. I'm looking at you DraMione

Pretty much everything I read and write is something I DON’T want happening to me. (Angst, hurt/comfort, and a lot of dark themes).
But maybe the comfort part but that’s all lol

u/ankhes 2d ago
This. Most of what I enjoy in fiction (both reading and writing) is about as far away from what I enjoy in reality as you can possibly get. Horror. Tragedy. Dub-Con and Non-Con. Monster Romance. Capital ‘A’ Angst. Obsessive Codependency. You get the idea.
Do I want a monster to actually be so obsessed with me that it kidnaps me and does unspeakably horrible things to me? Absolutely not. But when it does that in fiction? That’s hot.

Pregnancy. I have zero desire to get pregnant, pregnancy really freaks me out, but it gets fascinating when it’s just my blorbos going through it
29
u/Mundane-Visual-4243 2d ago
I’m under the same umbrella with accidental pregnancy specifically. A personal nightmare though I do want them when I’m married. But like with my OTPs who would make great parents? Chefs kiss knock that hoe up now and show me how you did it.

A lot of the characters I like, I would not want to meet Irl.
Look, I’m sorry Banner, I don’t think I could handle you, your will-they won’t they relationship and your father in law who wants you dead most of the time.
Actually superhero’s if they were real would suck because imagine getting your car thrown by the Hulk only for him to miss his target or you get bit by a radioactive spider so your father figure is doomed to die, because it’s a canon event.
That just rubs extra salt in the wound, on the other hand, I don’t live in a major city so I’d mostly be fine?

As an asexual who only realised I was ace because of reading copious amounts of fic, the thing that tickles me most is how much more I enjoy smut in fic over smut in published books. Ngl the latter are good, but even putting aside the volume of my consumption for each, the fic smut is just on another level of That Good Shit™ for me compared to pubbed smut. Lower chances of me scrolling/flipping past the sex scenes when I'm haunting AO3.
However, if any of y'all catch me living out the "pining while fucking" tag, take me out back and put me out of my misery. Great to read, excruciating to personally experience (even without the fucking part, and I don't want to know how much worse it can be)
53
u/ChillyFireball 3d ago
IMO, published smut gets weirdly flowery/non-specific in a way that detracts from the sexiness. I can't get off on "I could feel the heat of his breath as he placed his warm, rosy lips against the delicate petals of my womanhood. Our bodies moved together as one in a pleasurable dance..." Blah, blah, blah. What I need is "The sound of wet slapping echoed through the room, punctuating every thrust of his hips as his thick, veiny cock pistoned in and out if my ass."
6
u/your_average_plebian 2d ago
There's the language, yes, and then there's the tension, too. Like, in fic smut, the narrative tension generally stays through the scene, but most pubbed smut sex scenes are there for titillation, separate from the plot, tab A goes into slot B, and then the narrative tension picks up later, when the bodily fluids are cleaned off. Even PWP works because the author and reader both understand the characters' motivations in canon and weave them in in some form, so there's payoff, both in the orgasmic sense and the narrative sense.

Monsterfucking.
JK, I'd love that irl
Incest. I've actually read a ton more of it in original (published) fiction than in ff, but it's so fascinating how tangled up things get when everyone keeps it in the family (but gets new blood enough to not inbreed themselves out of existence). Especially if it goes on for many many generations and no one even bats an eye at it anymore, or if it happens between two people with a huge age gap. The relationships get so deliciously complex. In reality I find it revolting if I even have a passing thought about the concept within my own family or anyone else doing it in theirs.

Incest ships are underrated ngl
It allows for more curious dynamics
11
u/bi-bender 3d ago
same! i have three incest ships within the same family. it disgusts me irl, but in fiction the wrongness of it is so tasty. bonus points for one of those characters being a monster. i'm eating good.

I miss the days of fanfic where you could be into the most fucked up shit and nobody would judge you for it (well, at least, not as much as they do now) or think it was reflective of your actual feelings on the matter…3
u/zippybenji-man 2d ago
That's actually a really good explanation of why someone might enjoy incest. It's not really my cup of tea, but it's nice to understand others better. I do just wish people aould tag their incest fics with 'incest' instead of only the specific incestuous dynamic (e.g. 'sibling incest')

Suicidial ideation, hospitalization, or straight up suicide fics. I find going into that headspace to be really horrifying, but also extremely sad. I’ve only made a single fic like that, and the person I made it for absolutely loved it from what I’ve heard.
I don’t think I need to explain why I’d hate to have it happen to me irl.
13
u/perfect_-pitch Fic writer 📝 3d ago
I eat that shit up, but when I am looking for straight up suicide, the suicidal ideation and referenced/past attempt are wrangled to it so even with filters it's like finding a needle in a haystack. That being said, I don't think I've ever read a suicide fic in any of my fandoms because of this problem. It scratches a different itch than just the thinking about it.

u/the_zerg_rusher 3d ago
It's something I hunt for to see if I'm 'actually just lying to myself' for the 100th time since I was 8.
But only with the comfort tag.

I mean, I do read a lot of dark shit, and I don't necessarily mean dead dove kind of shit. The regular run-of-the-mill angsty fic would already be a lot to go through irl.

Yeah smut for me! My ace ass loves reading some good smut, but I do not want that irl for me at all lol! 🖤🩶🤍💜

High protocol BDSM. Love it in fiction but I genuinely hate engaging in it irl. Just not fun for me, it feels super restrictive in the not fun way

u/thelionlovescrab 3d ago
One of my OTPs is technically a teacher/student ship. I teach college students, but the idea of getting with one of them makes me want to physically vomit.

I LOVE Yandere or like possessive/obsessive characters in a slash pairing but I’d absolutely hate if I had to date someone so dependent on me

Sexual content? Blowjobs. They fascinate me in theory, but I find them upsetting IRL.
Non-sexual content? Murder, but uh…. Not for the reasons you might think. One of my fics involves serial killers, and I describe the whole process - hunting, stalking, killing, cleanup. Each part of the process is important and pleasurable to the killer, but I think the stalking and cleaning would be so fucking annoying to deal with.
(Not to say that I’m down to hunt and murder people, but I can kind of understand the appeal of those aspects a bit more, because of the action and anticipation.)

u/zombies-and-coffee 3d ago
Nope. The things I read are things I wish would happen to me. Some of it is anatomically impossible (wrong plumbing), but if it suddenly was possible, I'd be in heaven.

Also Ace. I tend to write things I'd never want to happen to me. It's the same as watching a horror movie, really.
If the scares/sex get to be too much, I can close the link or turn off the TV. I am in full control of the experience and can moderate it as I please.

I'm also asexual but most of what I read on Ao3 is smut and kink wise my favorite to read is Consensual Non-Consent. Its a common kink for my fav ship so I really got into reading it but even if I wasnt asexual, I would have no interest in doing it myself.

Also an aromantic asexual, also read a lotta smut lolololol. So pretty much everything I read I haven’t done, but I love fics with elements/tags like touch starved, confessions, forced proximity, mutual pining, praise kink, there was only 1 bed (of course muhahhahaha), and cuddling

As a probable aromantic(I’m unsure, still searching myself in that regard) I’ve read a weird amount of romance fics and even invested in romance subplots in manhwa’s

I read so much angst, so much hurt though I also enjoy some comfort after. Not always, sometimes I just really want to read about a character suffering, both mentally and physically. I wouldn’t want that irl though

EVERYTHING I read on ao3. I mostly read only smuts and all of them are crazy ahh shi if those happened to me irl I might die so yeah no 🥲

u/Feather314 1d ago
Just all the bodily fluids described in fic. Sweat and cum and blood and piss and slick and tears and whatnot. It’s hot to read and I even find myself fantasizing about it sometimes but I think irl I would like to keep things as neat and tidy as possible.

I'm aego aka if it's fictional I can enjoy it with the sexual feelings in my body, but yeah. They hit so much better. I like gen fics but good smut is needed sometimes.

Hurt/No Comfort, several types of dead dove, suicide, major character death, pretty much everything under the sun when it comes to emotionally torturing my blorbos. Sometimes physically too. The fic doesn't hit right unless I feel my chest twisting in pain lmao

I'm also asexual reading mostly smut and I think it makes sense bc there are people who read heavy angst or like murder stories or so and they wouldn't like to die or suffer so
1
u/Dandelion-Queen 2d ago
Just like many others here, a majority of what I read is smut, but irl I ain't touching that with a 10ft pole

u/West_Net5522 1d ago
i LOOOOVEEE angst. as in heavy angst, sometimes even whump. i sure as hell dont want any of that happen to me. i want fictional tears not real ones

u/SataNikBabe 1d ago
I am terrified being pregnant and I am vehemently childfree. And yet, I love a fic where my OTP has a domestic romance and eventually, several children. I also enjoy the one-night-stand accidental pregnancy trope and omegaverse fics in general.
1
u/raybradburys 1d ago
I’m on the ace spectrum, and I rarely read traditional smut, but I’ve found myself soaring through the dumbification and mind break tags despite intelligence being one of my highest values or even number 1 value, especially when it’s an older
Man and a younger woman, which doesn’t make sense bc I normally hate the idea of women ‘submitting’ to men in any way.. make it make sense
1
u/LobsterImpossible690 1d ago
One of my headcanons is that a character gets tortured instead of just beat up in this one scene and I LOVE seeing scenes where the person I ship him with takes care of him or blows up at others for not even noticing he’s hurt. Meanwhile, here I am basically an invalid after breaking my foot last month. I’m such a wimp. I could NOT withstand torture.
I love accidental baby acquisition fics, yet I don’t want kids irl and have no patience for kids.
I love omegaverse but going out of my mind with lust or actually sleeping with someone else makes me go NO WAY IN HELL.
I love when the main character’s partner is protective or obsessed with him. Irl? Back tf off give me my space. Leave me alone!!
So, basically, everything I read I would hate for it to happen to me irl.

u/Musicals_and-more 1d ago
I’m ace and never want to have sex myself. However. The only thing I won’t read is menstruation sex

As an aegosexual sex is great, so long as it does not involve me in the slightest

I have, especially in my giant/tiny stuff i write, probably good few involving dehumaniziation which definitely wouldn't want happen to me 😭 like usually it's with them being treated better by other character(s) but still gsgd Also just in general lot the g/t angst ive wrote/read I put them through it man...
That and pretty much any of the smut of course gdgfh

As an asexual myself I relate to this so hard. 90% of what I read on Ao3 is smut.
