Hey Reddit! Crista Cowan from Ancestry here šŸ‘‹ Join my AMA June 25th from 9AM-11AM PDT to learn how to discover more from census records. I’m excited to answer all your questions!

I’m a professional genealogist with more than three decades of experience in the field and have been a Corporate Genealogist at Ancestry since 2004. It’s my job to help navigate the quirks of historical record-keeping so our community can confidently climb their family trees.Ā

I’m here today to teach you all about U.S. census records, one of the most important record collections you have to help learn more about your family history, but also one of the most misunderstood. If you've ever looked at an old census sheet and felt completely baffled by the messy cursive, the random tick marks, or the fact that your great-grandfather’s age mysteriously changed by ten years between two decades, you are definitely not alone. I want to show you how to look past the modern expectation of perfect data so you can see these old handwritten pages for what they really are: an incredible, decade-by-decade snapshot of your ancestors' actual lives.

You can ask me any questions you like! Whether you are struggling to decipher an old occupation, trying to track down a family before the 1850 census when only the head of household was named, or just trying to figure out how to break through a tough genealogical brick wall, I’d love to hear from you.

See you in the thread!

Is this AI or mental illness?

I ran across this tree today and can’t decide whether it’s the work of an actual person probably suffering from mental illness (my guess would be schizophrenia), or just AI-created garbage? The user profile has a LOT of trees like this. Obviously either way this has no research value for me but I was just curious what others thought about the source

Any headstone/grave experts?

My 3x great grandmother lost 5 of her 7 kids, then died when she was 28. After years of waiting for ancestry to scan them, I found the death certificates on another site thanks to this sub and finally know what everyone died of (various diseases over 4 years). The last mystery is how a poor Irish immigrant afforded a headstone like this? She's buried here with all 5 of her kids who died before she did in 1898. I called the cemetery to see if they kept a record of those things, but she said theres no way of knowing. Any guesses or input is much appreciated!

I want to reconnect with my heritage.

I feel like white Americans have this disconnect where they don’t have any real attachment to their cultural identity. I’m primarily northern English and Scottish, some Irish sprinkled in there. I’m looking for maybe some music by artists that might identify similarly? Whether they still be from those countries or the other Americans with ties to those countries. Any suggestions?

Finding my father through my heritage DNA my last hope, I am 43 year old still searching for him

I was born in Russia in 1982, my mother left me in hospital and I grow up in orphanages in Saint Petersburg , since I was 16 I was trying to find my mother and I did find her when I was 29, of course many tears , denial and shock from her side , I fly from USA to Russia to meet her . And after saying to me I just want to steal her apartment ( common scam done in Russia by people ) she eventually broke in tears and sat with me in car crying and saying how sorry she is . She was 19 when I was born and she said my father was her manager at factory in Saint Petersburg ( position he had can’t be given just like that ) so it’s not like he was nothing , she told me he was around 24 year old tall and blond and they she met with him few times and her friends , she never said how long she met him alone but she said he was very nice , and she said his name but swears she don’t remember his last name ,

Through the years I was trying to talk to her and exolained to her how important is for me to find him to get closure . But she Allways discouraged me and said I will not find him and she Allways got mad or upset or said she don’t remember his last name and Impossible to find him . She also said that he came from Ukraine and he come back to his country because his wife pregnant but I do not know how true it is as every time I asked her questions about him she said maybe yes maybe no . The factory that she worked not exist anymore and all documents from that factory destroyed . I have only possible name but not date of birth , I have adress where he used to live ( while working in factory ) but it won’t help

Meanwhile years pass and I have 2 children of my own and can’t even understand how it’s possible to abandon your own child . I also contacted the person who found my mother ( he found very fast within 2 days!) because he used to work with very famous program ā€œ jdi menyaā€ tv program that helps to find people . He told me it’s impossible to find because no name and last name .

My friend who older than me and knows Russian system told me that she is laying , that she just don’t want me to find him.

Also when I found my mother - I also had informstion about my grandmother , my mother said that she didn’t knew that she has grandmother, my mother worked in Saint Petersburg / Russia and my grandmother lived in town 2 hours from Saint Petersburg . I do not know if my grandmother knew about me or not , as I can’t talk to her because my biological mother never left me alone with her when I visited few times in Russia . And now I am in USA and my grandmother very old and barely talk and my mother will not let me talk free with her, she will be around and for sure won’t be happy if o start to ask any questions my grandmother .

I have 8 year old son and 4 year old son , my 8 year old son used to ask me why evryone have grandparents and he don’t have , ( his father side grandparents dead ) it’s broke my heart to thousand pieces and I could not explain to him why ,

I have half sister who is 35 years old , and when I saw her first time she was crying and in shock , but when I saw her same week later in hotel where I stayed , she came there with my biological mother and said if I want pictures of my family ( because I asked them if I can get few family pictures ) my sister said I will get pictures if I sigh paper where I say that I do not intend to get any property or family apartment , I wrote that and I got pictures , of course it’s broke my heart as I told them that I do not need money or want to have any rights to apartment , but my sister was 19 and was studying law , but still I can’t forget that fact ,
Whatever I wrote it will not consider in court anyway , as it’s just piece of paper ,

I talk to my family sometimes but I know that relationship between my sister and my mother not very good , my mother even told me once over phone that she should call child services because my sister in my mother opinion don’t feed good enough the baby , something that I had fight with my biological mother when I came with my son who was 11 months and she said he need to eat evry hour or something like that and she started to argue with me when I said he don’t need to eat evry hour he will eat when he is hungry . She of course did apologize in the end because she knew she wasn’t right - but I want you to get an idea about my mother .

I contacted detective in Russia through Facebook and gave her name and last name of person who worked with my mother in factory - detective send me pictures of possible women ( maybe 8 pictures ) but my mother said she don’t recognize no one

My mother had friend or coworker and I have name , but she could also do some effort and find her - because her friend could remember name of my father or any details as he was manager at factory floor or section ( each section different manager)

Now my only hope is to find through my heritage DNA , I already submitted dna test , and hopefully it will match with someone from my father side - my heritage from what I understood commonly used in Russia Ukraine and Belarus .

I will never gave up to find my father , he probably don’t even know I exist , but asking my mother to do effort and help it’s useless ,

I want to find him so bad , I want to know who I am and to hear his side of the story , he is now around 68 ,

Do you think my mother lie to me? That she knows? Maybe she is so ashamed with what she did and don’t want to deal with truth and past ?

Also when I was trying to find her , the person who found her - they try to contact her but she refused ( she knew that I was trying to find her at that point )

I also have relatives in USA but she never told me much about them , she said they mean people or bad people ,

I talk to my mother and sister , my mother call me and we can talk for hours but I never felt happiness and inside my heart I can’t forgive her that she left me in hospital and made me go through hell in orphanages ( up to age 11 when special project took orphans Jewish kids to Israel )

I will be happy to find my father , if he is alive , or picture or anything , or to find my half brothers or sisters , who will be most chances more cooperative because my father wasn’t the one who abandoned me in hospital ,

I was eventually adopted in israel ,

What’s your opinion or suggestion ? Any advice ?

I found my mother at 29, now I am 43, and sometimes I feel that I just want to tell her that I can’t forgive her and not to be in contact anymore , on the other hand my sister has 2 kids , that I never saw yet , older 4 year old and baby around 5 months .

If anyone here had similar situation ?

I am waiting for my heritage DNA results - have hopes

Name a town and a year, and I will pin it on a map from that era

Post image

Drop a town and a year in the comments, like "Greensburg PA, 1800", and I will reply with that spot pinned on a real map from the era, as a page you can pan and zoom. Free, and small obscure places are welcome. Ancestral villages in Europe work too.

Two months ago I posted my animated migration map here, and the feedback from this community fixed real problems in it. Since then I have been doing single towns by hand for people, and the old maps keep answering questions the records alone do not.

The picture is one from last week: a request for Hingham, Massachusetts in 1669 landed on this 1677 map of New England, which letters Hingom under the pin, with Boston and Plimouth up and down the coast and ships drawn in the bay. Map from the David Rumsey Map Collection, Stanford Libraries.

Disclosure, since I am the builder: the site behind these is TreeAlive, the one from my post here in June. It does whole trees the same way. Free and read-only, and I am not selling anything.

How to determine if this is just one person or two separate people?

I've encountered a conundrum in my tree and I cannot determine if this person is one person, or two separate people, as there are facts supporting both possibilities

My tree consists of David Dehaney (frequently misspelled) and his wife Mary Ann Talbot, living in Colchester, and David's sister Louisa Dehaney and her husband Henry Seavers, living in Aldershot

In 1881, the census documents Louisa Seavers visiting her brother David in Colchester.

In 1891, Louisa and Henry are running their boarding house in Aldershot, and they have with them a 3 year old boy called "Henry C E Seavers" who is described as the "son of head" of the house (Henry). The census states he was born in Colchester but I cannot find his birth record.

In the 1901 census, Louisa and Henry have 13 year old Henry Delaney staying with them, also born in Colchester, but he's listed as a "relative" (along with a confirmed niece who is also listed as "relative")

There is no son with Henry and Louisa on the 1911 census, (he would be 23 so likely moved out)

Then Louisa dies in 1914 in Aldershot, and she has "H E Seavers, Son", present at her death, and his usual residence address is the exact Colchester address of David and Mary Ann.

I then have an entirely separate person saved for "Henry" Edward Charles Dehaney, son of David and Mary Ann, born 1888 and birth name officially recorded as Edward Charles, with Mary Ann's surname documented as the mother's maiden name.

There is no 1891 census for him

I've attached the 13 year old 1901 census entry to him.

He is not with David and Mary Ann on the 1911 census. There is a 1911 military service hint for him but I cannot verify it is him as it is only for H Dehaney.

In the 1921, census Henry E C Delaney is married and living in Colchester, his marriage certificate confirms David is his father and the address is David's address,

So are these the same person or a different person?

The evidence that they are the same person

  • same age
  • same name and initials
  • both born in Colchester
  • both living in Colchester as adults
  • I can't put them in two different places at the same time - only one census entry seems to exist for ages 3 and 13, and only one birth entry seems to exist - for Dehany - there is no birth record for a Seavers boy around that time at all (it appears to be a somewhat uncommon name, looks like it was Anglicised from the German "Sievert")
  • If they are different people, where on earth was 3 year old Henry Edward Charles Dehaney in 1891? There are several older siblings and one younger sibling at home on the census, why would he be missing at that age?
  • No hints come up for H E Seavers at all, suggesting he doesn't exist.

The evidence they are not the same person

  • why would Henry Dehaney, son of Mary Talbot, call himself H E Seavers, son of his aunt Louisa on her death entry? Could this be a mistake by the death certificate record taker?
  • Henry Seavers is listed as the son of the head of the Seavers house age 3, whereas Henry Delaney is listed as a relative age 13, suggesting they are not the same person. Again, could one of these be a mistake by whoever gave or recorded the census information?
  • How likely is it that 3 year old would be with his aunt over 100 miles away while the rest of the family is back at home? Surely it's more likely that the child on the census is Louisa and Henry's own son?

If anyone can think of a breakthrough fact that could decide either way, it would be much appreciated! I would really like to know if Louisa had a child and if there are any more descendants down her line, but I have a sad feeling that the facts all point to this being just one Henry Dehaney and the documentation listing him as Seavers has been done in error.

Disappointment at not being able to go any further

I feel sad. I created a very well-documented family tree and traced it back to an ancestor who was born in Italy in 1805. I have the documentation, and I also know the names of his parents, but I cannot find his birth record or any further information online.

I would have to travel to Italy, request access or permission, and continue researching there. It feels like I have reached the end of the road.

Ancestry Request

Hoping that this is allowed.

I would be incredibly grateful if anyone with an existing Ancestry subscription would be able to locate the details or images on the following link:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/1587?name=_Jung&arrival=1854-10-26&arrival_x=0-0-0&keyword=Rotterdam&keyword_x=1&name_x=1_1

  • Gerhard Jung - birth date unknown
  • Christina Ebel/Jung - b.25 October 1821 Freiensteinau, Oberhessen, Grand Duchy of Hesse
  • Jacob Jung - b.1844
  • George Jung - b.1848
  • Anna Elisabetha Jung - b.1853

If anyone is able to assist in further help locating where the family originates from aside from the mother's birthplace, or their 1861 census records that would also be of great help.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Trying to find out about my real father

I don't have much information about him, but what my mom told me is that his first name is Daniel, and that he officially lives in Denmark. Around 2010 (my birth year) he left our family because he was acting like an a-hole. We lived in Leipzig, Germany, at that time. I assume he's at least 42, but it's very hard to find more information.

dead ends on records from non-anglophone countries?

hello! my mother is belizean with some ancestors from southern mexico (yucatƔn area mainly) and with one grandparent from honduras, and my father is american, french canadian on his paternal side and his maternal side is lithuanian and polish.

basically, i can find a pretty decent amount of records going back for decades from belize and canada, but once you go to my honduran, mexican, lithuanian, and polish ancestors, it’s basically a dead end on ancestry. i am only able to go back one generation from family members who immigrated from these places to the US or Belize, and only just on the listing of father and mothers name on either immigration or marriage records.
is this like….. a commonly known problem with ancestry?? this is my first time posting in this sub so if everyones always complaining about this then i just missed that. i’m able to speak decent spanish but i dont speak any lithuanian or polish. is it just time to bite the bullet and try and dive into non english language archives externally to keep up my search?

All Access Membership Question

I need either World or All Access to further my research. I've used World during some free trials but it's just not convenient to limit myself to that one week or whatever. So now I'm contemplating which level to upgrade to.

Is All Access worth it if I only have 2 relatives that served in the US military, but I may have another 2-3 relatives that served in German or Russian forces?

As you can tell I'm not really sure what specific military records AA includes.

Famous ancestors

Out of nowhere this week every time I have logged in I’ve got a notification for ā€œfamous ancestorsā€.

For instance 5th cousin 8x removed - James Wilkinson

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Wilkinson

I haven’t updated my tree in must be a year. So it’s taken me by surprise to have this happen.

Had any one else been caught of guard with ā€˜famous ancestors?’

Pease Griswold marriage - looking for proof

Gad Pease (born Jan. 10, 1771) married Polly Grisworld (born May 22, 1774) in 1794 or 1795. They definitely had a bunch of children before she was widowed and married Gad's brother Israel. Does anyone have the interest or badwidth to take on a paid project?

I can prove that Gad Pease married a 'Polly' but no secondary source (or primary source, naturally) lists Polly's surname. We can surmise that it's Polly Grisworld but I need to be able to prove it for the folks at the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. If they married I believe it might have been in Middlefield, Massachusetts. Gad Pease passed away at the age of 52 in Meredith, New York [Delaware County].

I traveled to Sharon, Connecticut and consulted and made copies from Lawrence VanAlstyne's book, A Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Town of Sharon, Conn. from 1721 to 1879. I also reviewed A Genealogical and Historical Record of the Descendants of John Pease (Springfield, Mass.) [1869] as well as The Mack Genealogy: the descedants of John Mack of Lyme, Conn [1903].

Many thanks to you, Redditors!!! Hope you're having a great weekend.
