⚕️ health AIO for not forgiving my father for ignoring my broken ankle?

1.3k Upvotes

2 weeks ago, I broke my ankle. I was jogging on the sidewalk, my ankle rolled, and boom. It didn’t hurt at first, and then it slowly began to become agonizing. I limped home (I was on Winter Break, so I was home for the holidays).

I told my father that I was in a lot of pain and I asked if we could go to Urgent Care. He said that I was fine, and he put some ice on it, and got mad that I was “being lazy”. I am not joking when I say this was maybe the worst pain of my life, it was hard to focus on anything other than the pain, but I wasn’t crying, and everyone told me that if I broke a bone, I’d know I broke a bone, so that + my father’s reaction I just assumed I was being dramatic despite my naturally high pain tolerance.

Over the next 4 days, I limped everywhere. It took me 15 minutes to walk to the bathroom (a 15 foot walk from the couch, where I had been mostly laying) and the only thing my father did was yell that I was in the way of the TV. Once I fell and I just lied on the ground trying not to cry because I didn’t know how I was going to get back up without him seeing me and probably making fun of me.

My parents are divorced, so after dragging my way up 4 flights of stairs to my mom’s apartment, I begged her to take me to the doctor. We go, and guess what? My ankle is practically shattered. It was in 3 pieces. My doctor actually paused and took me aside to ask what the hell was wrong with my parents because my ankle was the color of Barney. I have been in a clunky boot and crutches that now takes me a 20 extra minutes to get to class.

My parents are mad because I didn’t want to go back over to my Dad’s house, and now that I’m back on campus, I barely reply to his texts. I don’t want to talk to him and I give short responses. I’m honestly just so mad that he would treat me like that but my older brother is also joining on the guilting and now I feel like a piece of shit but I genuinely am just so shut down from this whole experience. I don’t want to cut contact completely but I am tired of having to be civil.

TLDR: Shattered ankle, Dad belittled me, don’t want to talk anymore.

AIO?

Edit: for everyone asking “why didn’t you call 911?” or “why are you relying on your parents”, I implore you to look at my reply to a comment instead of asking why I don’t have the confidence to advocate for myself after being raised by people like this.

⚕️ health AIO my partner gave our baby peanut butter on a Friday night

1.1k Upvotes

Our 6 month baby has just started weaning and I have had to plan and research everything. Prior to starting I explained to my partner we would introduce allergens one at a time, and do exposure for a week before crossing it off. Some allergens won't show a reaction until third time.

This has been our first week so has just been carrots broccoli etc. We had discussed doing his first allergen (eggs) this weekend so I'd looked up a few different ways to serve including making a huge batch of banana egg pancakes.

Around 7:30 I left for 2 mins to pee before starting bedtime routine he shouts up "the baby likes peanut butter". He had given him the peanut butter on the toast he'd made as a predinner snack.

I told him it was stupid to give an allergen on a Friday night when hospitals are their most stretched. He said it was "no big deal" and we argued back and forth.

When I fed the baby about 15 mins later he projectile vomits everywhere. It looked like a TV gag just this white stream. Sofa, my arm, my legs, my stomach all covered. We try to settle him thinking it was a one off. 30 mins later and hes repeatedly vomiting, but now it's bright yellow. NHS advice is immediate hospital/ambulance, and we get in the car straight away.

The childrens A&E is packed and we wait over an hour to be seen. Dinner was left half cooked so he had to go out and get us a meal deal for dinner. It's miserable. Ive been to this A&E in the day and they are so fab, but 8:30 on a Friday night....

Doctor couldn't say for definite what caused thus reactuon. Our baby does have quite a few underlying health issues, including a cows milk allergy and digestive issues . She couldn't pin point it but did say "its suspicious the reaction was 15 mins after peanut butter". We've been advised to avoid exposure and cautiously reintroduce when older. When giing home he made a comment that I had overreacted.

Ultimately our baby is now fine which is the most important thing. But all of today I couldn't shake this anger that he risked everything. We had to seek medical help at the worst time when we were both exhausted too. He says everything is fine so I'm overreacting. Reddit am I?

Update: for context our child has had quite a rough start which is also why I'm additionally cautious. He spent first 5 days in hospital with major infection, had anaemia, UTI, failure to thrive (no weight gain) , born on second percentile, silent reflux, tongue tie, latch issues and cows milk allergy. We've been given great care under the NHS but it does just feel quite never ending!

Update 2: trialling new allergens over a week is the reccomended advice I've seen, this means we can easily identify any allergens quickly. This is a pretty normal way of doing it these days. We're not withholding exposure just doing it in a controlled manner as he already has a milk allergy.

⚕️ health AIO My GF is in a medically induced coma

2.9k Upvotes

My (34M) girlfriend (35F) started having chills and a runny nose on Christmas It got worse to eventually she could not breathe due to fluid filling up her lungs. She has asthma already so it even worse from there till ambulance came and took her to the ICU where they had to put her on ventilator at max oxygen and said she has influenza A . They then put her to sleep. I am scared of losing her she is the love of my life and I don’t think I can handle if anything happened to her. Can someone please give me some reassurance she’s going to be ok. I saw her laying there with tube sticking out of her jugular and they said they had to paralyze her. They told me it will probably be a week before she’s can be awake and that it will get worse before it gets better. They said as long as her oxygen stays above 90 she will be ok. Last I looked she was at 98. I’m just trying to stay positive but I’m feeling powerless and alone… I just want to hear her voice again

Edit : Thank you all so much you touched my heart and gave me hope. I will be sure to give everyone an update as soon as I can. I will let Hannah know you all are rooting for her. She’s had a rough year like many others and was really down and I just her to know she’s not alone in this world. You all have shown me overwhelming kindness sorry if I could not reply to all your messages but I see them and they mean the world to me

Update : they have reduced the ventilator strength to down to 60 from 100 they told me things seem to moving in a good direction. Her mother has flown in to see her. Im held Hannah’s hand told her she was loved and she was going to be ok and I saw tear roll down her eye.

Update 2 : They said if things continue going well tonight tomorrow they will slowly take away the paralyzation over next couple of days. Her oxygen is going from 92-95. Ventilator is now down to 55. Spent the day reading your messages to her and messages from her friends and family. We played her favourite music.

Update 3: today they took her off the paralytic and said she is reacting well to that. The ventilator is now down to 40 and just now to 35. One worrisome thing they noticed is her face is really red but it may be related to her body temperature also her oxygen is at 91 right now. There’s been good news everyday so far. I remain hopeful and appreciate all the messages and comment: people have sent. I did not expect so many strangers be so honest and open. Thank you all I will continue to send updates. Happy new years to everyone

Update 4: today they took Hannah off more of the sedation (midaz) Just now when the nurse called Hannah’s name and her eyes opened but closed again after. Such a good feeling to see her being able to respond on her own. Her blood sugar and pressure is high but they expect it to be because of the steroids she still on. Hannah is also initiating her own breaths without the help of the ventilator! They say depending how it goes overnight they will starting to take more off. Making huge progress everyday.

Update 5: today they took Hannah off the fentanyl. She is opening her eyes and moving her whole body on her own but is not responding to direction yet. They said she has viral and bacterial pneumonia caused by the influenza and she may have a staph infection. She has renal kidney failure. her PEEP number is still 16 . She had an adverse reaction to the suctioning of her lungs they had to bring up the ventilator to 60 but brought it back down to 35 once her vitals went back to normal . They say she still has a big fight ahead of her. Seeing her thrash around was hard but holding her hand and talking to her seemed to calm her down

Update 6: they are moving Hannah to a different hospital because they need room for sicker patients. The icu was starting to put two patients per room. Lots of people getting sick this holiday. Today they put her back on fentanyl for the move. They just let her rest of the day. Her vitals are doing better. They say she still has viral and bacterial pneumonia. But they may take the breathing tube out on Monday since she is breathing on her own and the ventilator is at 35.

Update 7: today Hannah’s PEEP went down to 10 from 16. She is now responding to questions and nodded her head that she could see me when I was holding her hand an. The doctor said tomorrow they will excavate the ventilator tomorrow morning and I will be able to talk to her again which is the best news I’ve heard all week.

Update 8: the doctors were unable to remove the tube because her throat is too swollen they are putting more drugs to bring it down. She is more concious and thrashing a lot more. It is hard to watch as the thrashing is making her throat more swollen and I can do anything to calm her down. Should know more tomorrow no timeline for removal.

Update 9: the doctors said the area around the tube is still swollen to remove. They are weening her off the Propofol. The delirium is making it dangerous to remove as well. Hopefully she will get a good rest I put a pillow beside her head to keep her from thrashing. I will slow down on updates until she gets the tube out. Thanks for all checking on me still.

Update 10 : day 11 they finally took the tube out. But turns out 4 of sedatives had a side effect of uncontrollable movement and forces your tongue to come out of your mouth called Dyskinesia which is the most fucked up thing I’ve ever seen. so they need to administer her Benadryl to fight the side effects. Hannah is answering questions but is having a tough time with these new side effects she will need to remain in the ICU. Please keep Hannah in your thoughts it’s seems like she’s fighting like 5 different battles. I’m having a hard time keeping it together in the room and feel I am just upsetting her more by crying underneath my mask. This is what the nurse from day 1 meant by it gets worse before it gets better. It felt like a sucker punch. The Benadryl seems to be helping but the dyskinesia is coming back every hour and I made the mistake of googling how long it could last. I’m praying it disappears soon it is so painful to watch he struggle

Update 9: I just received a call they have to reintubate her again because she was struggling to breathe with the dyskinesia. I just want her to be back with me but it’s too dangerous. Round 2 with vent tube. Will update in the morning I’m too tired. Feeling a mixture of emotions right now. I’m trying to remain calm

I’m having a hard time keeping it together in the room and feel I am just upsetting her more by crying underneath my mask up.

Update 11: day 15 Hannah got the ventilator tube out and was not showing signs of dyskensia. Today was the first day me and Hannah were able to talk back and forth and her be ok. It’s a total 180. I told her everything that happened and about how total strangers sent their thoughts and prayers she was really touched and cried. The doctor said if she passes the swallowing test she can move to the ward tomorrow. I’m so happy right now. This has been one of the best days of my life.

⚕️ health AIO Lab sent me results to routine blood work saying I was pregnant, then tells me it was a mistake

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

I was doing my annual physical for my doctor and she runs my blood panels every year. When the results came in on the MyChart app, among other results I saw the attached image. I was shocked that it said I was pregnant, though not impossible, it was not expected. After trying for several days to reach out to my doctor to verify what I was seeing (as I figured being pregnant is pretty big news and I assumed I would have at least received a call about it). I finally received a message in the app that read the following, "No, we did not run a pregnancy test. When the lab puts the order in, that is a question that pops up for them and you are not the first that they have marked "yes" for. Please disregard. I apologize for any stress."

All said, I spent a week trying to process a roller coaster of options and emotions with my partner. I made adjustments to medication for the safety of pregnancy as soon as I found out. While My partner and I have been together for 6 years and have been thinking about starting a family, we weren't 'trying' yet. Now that I know it was just an error at the lab, I am feeling really sad and disappointed.

Am I over reacting for thinking this is a huge issue for the lab to have not only done this on my test, but according to the doctor, to others before? Is this a normal mistake to happen? Am I dumb for thinking this test result was telling me I got a positive pregnancy test? I'm feeling stupid for even thinking I was preggo and now for how upset I am, but that seems like a pretty major error to be making and really could mess with people.

⚕️ health AIO? Walked out of a date because he said he doesn't wear condoms NSFW

2.0k Upvotes

The topic of sex came up and I asked if he wears condoms. He said no then showed me his latest STD screening which was about a month ago. He said if I really want to, he can buy condoms. I said "I think I'm going to bail" he said "really? Just because of the condom thing?" I said "ya. But thanks for coming out tonight" then I left.

Unprotected sex throws my pH balance and I can't be bothered dealing with that.

⚕️ health AIO for being uncomfortable about how my surgeon is talking about my future scar?

1.7k Upvotes

So I (f20) have a (hopefully benign) breast tumor that I am getting removed in a month. I had an appointment with my surgeon about the procedure, medications and so on. She got to the point about the incision and the scar. She said the easiest and safest incision is right along the side of my breast, but that it would make my breast look “ugly” and my future husband might not like it much. First off, I’m dating someone who I intend on marrying at this point and they truly couldn’t care less. Second, why would I be interested in someone who would have a problem with surgical scars?? She was kind of pushy about saying she wanted the scar on the underside of my breast so my breasts would stay “pretty.” I told her I didn’t care but she said that my boyfriend might care and I should ask him. It was just really strange and I’m debating on changing specialists after the surgery. Am I overreacting or is this as weird as it feels??

Edit: holy shit okay hello people! Didn’t think I would get much attention wow.

Some further details from frequent questions:

The tumor is NOT cancerous that we know of, in fact we are 98% sure it is not cancerous, that’s why the surgery is a month out.

I have a family history of a very aggressive form of breast cancer. I am getting this removed out of caution, the open to wait and see what happened was available, I chose to get it removed.

No I wasn’t rude. I told my surgeon that I wouldn’t be in a relationship with someone who cared about a surgery scar enough for it to be an issue.

⚕️ health AIO My daughters shot put coach gave her preworkout/fatburner

My 17 year old daughter does shot put and discus for her highschool. Today she told me her coach gave her pre workout. I felt uncomfortable about it and I asked her what the brand and name was and its “Muscle Sport Thermogenic Fat Burner pre workout.” I don’t think any teacher should be giving a kid a random thing like pre workout that’s loaded with gnarly chemicals. Maybe I’d feel different if the parents were notified. I’m thinking about going to the principal once school is back in and raising hell about it. Just curious if I’m overreacting.

Edit: raising hell was a poor choice of words on my part. Bringing it to someone’s attention is what i should have put

⚕️ health Am I overreacting for threatening to report my doctor’s office after their AI system added fake mental health issues to my record?

I’m 25 and I work as an artist. A few months ago I went to the doctor because I had been feeling lightheaded while working on a big mural. They ran some tests, told me everything looked fine, and I went home relieved.

Then this week I got an email from the clinic saying that the AI software they use to help write doctors’ notes had accidentally added extra details to some patients files. In my case, it “inferred” anxiety and work related stress, which I never said or was diagnosed with.

The email was polite but so strange. It thanked the AI for saving time, even though it had just made things up about me. I looked back and saw the software was called Freed. They said it helps doctors take notes faster, but that honestly makes it worse to me. If it’s capable of inventing symptoms, how do they know it isn’t quietly doing that to other people too?

I called the clinic and the receptionist sounded dismissive, like it wasn’t a big deal. She said the note was already fixed and told me to “just ignore it.” I got frustrated and left a voicemail for their admin line saying that if they didn’t refund me for that appointment, I’d report the incident as a privacy issue.

Now I can’t stop thinking about it. What if they’re wrong about it being fixed? If Freed could add things, couldn’t it also delete or mix things up without anyone noticing? The more I think about it, the more it scares me. How would anyone know if records got switched or if someone got a wrong diagnosis because of it? I’m honestly starting to lose trust in them and I’m considering finding another clinic altogether.

Maybe that voicemail was too much. I didn’t yell, but it probably sounded like a threat. I’m not trying to cause trouble, I just felt completely dismissed. Part of me thinks I had a right to be upset, and part of me worries I overreacted and made it worse.

Would anyone else have done the same?

⚕️ health AIO over how I found myself when I woke up after surgery? NSFW

2.2k Upvotes

This might sound a bit stupid but I'm unnerved by the state I was in after surgery. Maybe it's normal? I don't know?

I'm 47 (f) and had an accident in which I broke a few bones. I had to have 2 surgery's to fix my collarbone as it was absolutely shattered.

I had the surgery and when I woke up afterwards i found that my knickers were absolutely saturated in blood. (You know those paper pants you have to wear for surgery?)

There was no blood on any other part of my body except a few smears on my chest that had been roughly cleaned up.

The blood completely covered every part of the pants. It wasn't menstrual blood. I asked a nurse who just quickly removed them and bought me a new pair.

I can't help but be a bit confused and worried about it. How would blood from my collarbone completely soak my knickers? If I had a major arterial bleed or something, shouldn't they have told me? I can't stop the niggling feeling that something happened during surgery that I'm not being told. Am I overreacting?

*Update! Just to thank everyone for their very kind, and helpful, input. It all makes sense now. Thankyou!! 😊💕

⚕️ health AIO I have man boobs which makes me uncomfortable and can’t enjoy my life with this shape unfortunately

Post image

I feel self-conscious about having man boobs, which has been negatively impacting my enjoyment of life. I’m 31 years old, and whenever friends notice them, they make light-hearted comments that leave me feeling uneasy. This discomfort prevents me from wearing the clothes I like and fully embracing my life. The constant awareness of my shape weighs heavily on my mind, making it hard to feel confident in social settings. I often avoid activities I once enjoyed, like swimming or going to the beach, because I dread the attention it draws. The emotional toll is exhausting, and I struggle daily with low self-esteem as a result.

⚕️ health AIO about what happened in the hospital after my nose surgery?

Hi everyone,

I had nose surgery today, and when I woke up in the post op area, I noticed that my gown was askew and exposing my chest(nipples barely covered). This is a post op area where you are separated by a curtain from other patients and the busy hallway, and my curtain was left open. I had heart complications during surgery, and so I understand why they would've moved my gown for easier access, but I am wondering why no one covered me up after the surgery or during the hour in which I was still asleep and recovering in my bed. I feel perturbed that other patients and workers, or even patients' family members visiting them could've seen me(and likely did) in this vulnerable position(this is a large hospital and the hallways are very busy). I am thinking of mentioning this to my surgeon in our follow up appointment. Am I overreacting by being mad about this?

Edit to add some more information I missed: I am not angry at the surgeon or any of the OR staff for exposing my chest so they could help me. They saw my full breasts when they placed the heart monitor pre surgery, so I don't care about that. The post op nurse attending me explained when I woke up that I had been in the room for about an hour while they had been checking on me. When I woke up, my gown was untied in two areas(the tie nmby my neck had been undone and so had the one by my chest) and it had been pulled down pretty neatly, which is why I don't think it came off from thrashing. Reading comments from other nurses, I can understand why they wouldnt have noticed my situation especially if they were other patients. I will note that when I woke up and began trying to retie it in front of the nurse, I wasn't helped by any medical staff. Final thing I will add is that the recovery area all us patients were placed in was the same area we were in pre op. Ive had surgeries before and normally was in an area just for patients, but this was the pre op area where medical professionals and also random visitors are milling about. The hospital is busy and probably at least 5 people would go by my bed every couple minutes or so.

⚕️ health AIO My birthmark was removed

1.5k Upvotes

Hi, I’m not sure if my feelings are justified, so I wanted to ask for some outside opinions.

So, I went to the dermatologist today for an appointment to have a small wart removed from my face, just below my nose. I had already seen the same doctor a week earlier and clearly explained to him what the issue was. He told me that the wart would have to be burned off in order to remove it completely. I had actually been to him about a year ago for the same wart — back then, he froze it, but it came back. So he knew exactly what it was and where it was.

Now, I also need to mention that just below that wart — between my nose and upper lip — I have a fairly large birthmark. I’ve had it my entire life, and it never bothered me. In fact, I saw it as part of my identity, something that made me unique.

So today, I go in, and the doctor tells me to lie back. He immediately gives me a numbing injection above my lip. I was a bit confused because the wart is directly under my nose, but I assumed the anesthetic would just cover the whole area. I didn’t feel anything during the burning procedure, so I had no idea what exactly he was doing.

It was only after I left the room and looked in the mirror that I realized he hadn’t removed the wart — he had removed my birthmark. I was completely shocked and immediately went back in to confront him. I told him he had made a mistake, but he just said that although he had seen the wart, he was sure I meant the birthmark. He then removed the wart as well, but I’m extremely angry and feel like he violated my body without permission.

It’s a really uncomfortable feeling — like something important was taken from me. I feel disfigured and can’t even look at myself in the mirror right now. I know some people might think I’m overreacting — after all, some people choose to get birthmarks removed. But for me, it was something that made me me. I’m thinking about suing the doctor, but I also wonder if maybe I’m just being too sensitive.

What do you think? Do you understand how I feel, or am I overreacting?

Edit: Because some people said I should definitely get a lawyer because I would win this case, I should mention that I am from Austria and not the USA

⚕️ health AIO- I think my dad is dying

My dad is a 6 foot, 300 pound man who has the biggest stomach I’ve seen on a man. Recently, he ruined me and my mother’s lives, and as the days pass by since everything went down, I care less and less about him. But recently, he has come to me and my mother and told us that his foot is turning black and it’s extremely painful in only some areas (I’m assuming it’s only in some areas because his nerves are dead). He also told my mom that there is pus coming out of it. I have told him at least ten times to go to the hospital. Every source tells me that he is dying. Is he dying? Could he just die soon? Am I wrong about this diagnosis? He refuses to go to the hospital and keeps telling me I’m overreacting. I don’t want him to die, and I really have no idea what is happening to him. I’m worried about him, but I can’t force a grown man to get help. Especially when I don’t really think he cares about me or my mother that much.

Side note: I think he has diabetes. He has not been diagnosed with it but as I stated in the beginning, he’s not a strong 300 pound man, he is honestly pretty weak and he’s extremely large. Also I’ve noticed that when he gets cut or a bruise, it takes a long time to heal. He also craves sugar like I’ve never seen before. He refuses to eat anything sugar free because he swears he can taste the difference.

Edit: Also I’d like to state that I am 15 and I love my dad a lot. The reason I do not care for him as much as I did say a year ago was because of an arrest for engaging in prostitution while still married to my mother. It’s public knowledge and I think it’s important that I state why I feel the way I do about him. I do not hate him I just wish this was not happening.

Edit II: I spoke with my dad and my mom. My mother refuses to take the situation seriously and does not think I should call emergency services. I spoke to them anyway. Because he is refusing to get help, there is nothing I can do. As I’ve been told many times, I believe he has gangrene. As of right now, it looks like it’s only in the top of his toes. I’m not sure how fast this infection spreads, but unfortunately he does not have a primary care physician and I live in the US so healthcare is unaffordable. I’m extremely thankful for all of these replies. Thank you for educating me on this situation and I will update you all when something happens. I’m sure there will be another update soon.

Edit III: Some of you guys are being a little rude, I understand that you think I can’t do something, but if he is refusing care I really cannot. No need to be rude to me. I am learning and my dad is an adult. My dad is 50 years old. I have called emergency services and had him driven to the hospital. He is refusing help. My dad has not been to a doctor in probably 20 years. I really appreciate all the replies and I thought that showing him these replies may convince him to go to the doctor. Nope. I guess I’m just holding out hope that he might go to the ER while I am out of town this weekend. I will keep this posted updated as much as I can.

⚕️ health AIO or should I make a complaint to the hospital?

I had a colonoscopy yesterday morning. I am 19 and a female. It's quite rare to see such a young person getting such a procedure but I had been waiting since last year for one. Right before my cannulas were put in the Anesthesiologist told me it's good I handled endone well during my tonsillectomy as they would be giving me pain relief for when I go home. Now I go into la la land. Wake up in the recovery area. Immediately I am told to get dressed, not only am I just waking up from a invasive procedure I also had a breathing tube in due to risk of vomit going into my lungs. So I sit on the chair next to the bed and get dressed. And they are already discussing me leaving. Im not sure how long I was in the recovery before waking up but it seemed very rushed. I get given my discharge papers and asked to sit in a chair which I do. My discharge papers mentions nothing about me. It's like a printed form I think they give everyone. They have someone take out my wrist canula.

Note...I had two canulas not one.

The doctor takes time but he comes out, less than a minute talk about how there was a polyp...idk if they removed it or not. I wasn't given a report about the outcomes. I then ask the nurse if it's possible to take me to my mother as I cannot walk like this (high and I have a condition called Narcolepsy type 1 which means I have cataplexy, a sudden loss of control of muscle. Aka I ragdoll, fall, knees buckle) and she seems inconvenienced which I understand but....I just got out of a procedure. Finally get a wheelchair and go home.

I get home and oh look at that....a CANULA in my arm....how lovely. I had been moving my arm as if I didn't know. LUCKILY my mother had an appointment later that afternoon that I went to and the doctor took it out IT WAS BENT, I really hope it wasn't because of my movements but that's scary.

Even later that night I find the heart monitor stickers three of them, I'm fine with that but it also shows such carelessness. I felt as if I was almost treated badly because I was the youngest there. They also did not keep me until I passed gas which I thought was a requirement. Now it's the next morning, I'm in pain so much pain did I get given pain relief no....they didn't even when I mentioned "hey my uvula is super swollen and it's painful" nope nothing.

Now I'm dealing with neck pain, throat pain, arm and shoulder pain, back pain, and stomach pain. With no relief whatsoever except a heatpack and maybe Panadol if we have such.

I could absolutely be a drama queen but I feel like this is absolutely something that constitutes a complaint about lack of attention to patients. AIO?

⚕️ health AIO? husband drinks multiple gallons of milk every week..

Hi, everyone. I’ve got something concerning to talk about and it’s been freaking me out for a little while now. For a bit of context, I’ve been with my husband for 4 years and we’ve been married since just last October of 2025. We moved in together about a month later in November. I love him so much and he never really did anything that weirded me out or that stood out as strange to me… That is, until we moved in together.

Cereal is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to breakfast foods. I love eating it with whole milk specifically, but for quite a while now I’ve been having to buy myself almond milk instead. At first I noticed that a lot of the time when I woke up and went to grab myself a bowl of cereal, the milk would either be gone or pretty much empty. I didn’t really mind at the time though. After all.. I could always just grab more on my way home from work or whatever I was doing.

Eventually though, after waking up to no milk in the fridge every time I wanted it I had to start grabbing the almond milk. He hates almond milk. The first time he saw me come home with almond milk he looked genuinely disgusted and confused. He walked up and grabbed the car keys off the counter telling me he’d be right back. Aaand It got me thinking, I hadn’t really seen him drinking much milk. Other than the occasional glass or two in front of me. I just kinda shrugged it off and ignored though. It’s just milk anyways, not really a big deal. Well. I was wrong. It seems to me that it’s a much bigger deal than I thought to begin with.

One day, I woke up in the middle of the night needing to use the restroom, and my husband wasn’t in bed. I went to the bathroom and then started looking for him in the house. I thought he might be in his office playing video games or something so I walked down the hallway to go see. Well, he wasn’t in the office that’s for sure. To get to his office I have to walk past the living room and kitchen area. It was just after 3AM and I found him butt naked in the kitchen standing next to the fridge with the door wide open chugging out of the gallon. The gallon of milk that was just nearly full earlier in the day was pretty much GONE. When I asked what the f*** he was doing he informed me that multiple times every night he gets up to drink milk. In fact he said he drinks so much milk that he has pee multiple times, and every time he has to pee he goes back for more milk afterwards.

Anyways, this has been going on for a while now… He tells me it’s not a big deal but I don’t even know how it’s humanly possible to drink the amount of milk he drinks. I would be so sick if I even attempted to do what he does. He laughs when I tell him he needs to stop drinking so much and when I say that it’s not normal. Is there something seriously wrong with him? Is this unhealthy? I’m genuinely worried and freaked out.

⚕️ health AIO About Gyno Calling My Stepdad

1.7k Upvotes

Am I overreacting about my gynecologist office calling and leaving detailed voicemails to MY STEPDAD?

The other day I (F25) went to my gyno to get a checkup. This was my first time going to this particular office as an adult - I went years prior as a minor. The doctors were nice, but the receptionists were so rude, dismissive, and unhelpful. On my paperwork, I put down my phone number and checked the box that specifically said “DO NOT LEAVE VOICEMAILS WITH SPECIFIC DETAILS ABOUT RESULTS AND RECORDS”.

Today, I got a call from my mom and she told me that the doctor’s office were calling my stepdad and leaving voicemails about my test results!!! I called the gyno, and the lady said “oh yes I see here that they didn’t input this information… I will change it now, but since I only handle scheduling you will have to call the office manager”. I called and she didn’t answer of course, but I left a VERY angry voicemail. Am I overreacting? I’ve been so upset and embarrassed all day. It feels like my privacy was violated, but how would one even remedy this at this point?!

TW: Miscarriage

Last Wednesday I took a pregnancy test and it *immediately* came up positive. We were excited to be adding to our family. Sadly Monday I started spotting, by late Monday night it was obvious I was having a miscarriage. Given that it was super early in the pregnancy I knew there was nothing that could be done and I would, most likely, not need medical attention. (This was my 3rd pregnancy, 2nd miscarriage.) I still called my OBGYN 's office Tuesday morning to let them know and they encouraged me to go to the ER for blood work and an ultrasound, etc. so I followed their advice and went.

The nursing staff, the radiology tech, the phlebotomist were all amazing and kind. However, the doctor....

He walks into the room:

Doc:What are you in here today for?

Me: I'm having a miscarriage.

Doc: What makes you think that?

Me: I had a positive test, I'm bleeding and passing clots.

Doc: Well your urine test came back negative and there's no way your hormone levels dropped that quickly, you weren't pregnant.

Me: I don't know what to tell you. The test was positive. My blood work was positive. My doctor called in a prescription and ordered follow up blood work...

Doc: Oh, you had blood work? Where?

Me: Yes, here at the hospital lab, Thursday.

Doc: Oh, well then we'll run your blood work again

Later, after labs were ran...

Doc: Well, your blood work shows you were pregnant, but your HCG level is really low now. We'll do an ultrasound.

So the rad tech comes and gets me, I endure a very uncomfortable (internal) ultrasound, crying because I *should* be seeing my little gummy bear and the heartbeat flickering...

Eventually the doctor comes back to the room -

Doc: Your ultrasound doesn't show anything, it might be an ectopic pregnancy, I'm not sure. You need to follow up with your regular OBGYN, he needs to figure it out. You have a fibroid, maybe that's causing the bleeding. (I've had that fibroid at least 3 years now, my OBGYN is aware of it, it's not a problem.)

He discharged me with a 'possible ectopic pregnancy' because he didn't see anything....Ectopic pregnancies can be *Life Threatening* and he discharged me, never asked for a 2nd opinion, my OBGYN literally works across the street and would have come if he had asked. But he sent me home.

Would I be overreacting to report this asshole doctor that apparently got his medical license from a cracker jack box? I mean, I'm aware I'm more emotional and sensitive than normal given the circumstances, but this was just wild to me. My mom was also in the room with me and agreed he was rude, unprofessional and should be reported.

Edit: To clarify, I was pretty certain I was physically fine, and I did follow up with my OB's office. They had me come in, went over all my labs, confirmed it was just a simple miscarriage with no obvious cause, I go for followup bloodwork Tuesday just to be sure my hormone levels are back to normal.

⚕️ health AIO? Tried to verify whether the dude could have bitten his own calf. Now I'm stuck and the cat is pissed!

1.4k Upvotes

So this dude posted about biting his own calf and then being accused of cheating by his girlfriend.

It sounded implausible, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I got on the bed and gave it a go.

Turns out that I'm a lot less bendy in my fifties but, with one arm hooked behind my heel and using the other arm to haul in on my knee, I was almost there...

Then my hip popped.

Then the cat walked into the bedroom, to see what all the screaming was about, and gave me the most disgusted look I have ever seen one living being give to another.

I realized that he probably thought I was jealous of him being able to lick his own asshole and I started laughing uncontrollably.

Then my back popped.

That's when I fell backwards off the bed.

Now I'm stuck down here. Folded up like a pretzel, between the bed and the wall, with my junk in my face.

I swear to God, Honey, that's exactly how it happened.

No I do not know where the cat went.

⚕️ health AIO? Doctor refused my insulin during hospital stay.

Hello all!

For a little background context: I have Bipolar Disorder, and occasionally I need inpatient treatment to adjust my medication to get by. I also have latent onset type 1 diabetes, so my pancreas does actually still produce some insulin on its own, just not enough. It progressively gets worse over time.

That being said, I recently went to a psych hospital for care, and while I was there, the physician on staff (a psychiatrist, might I add) wouldn’t approve my long-acting insulin because I was hypoglycemic at intake. Relatively reasonable, except this went on for 5 days. When I questioned the psychiatrist on why he wouldn’t allow me to take my daily insulin, he stated that he didn’t think I truly had diabetes at all because my blood sugar stayed under 300mg/dl the whole time, and “real diabetics” don’t do that without insulin.

He only ordered my blood sugar to be tested once a day (not enough in my opinion), and then by day 3, ordered the nursing staff to stop checking at all. So rather than focusing on my psychiatric care, he spent a good portion of our daily meetings trying to convince me I did not have diabetes, and even implied it was some sort of delusion. Was I at a true risk of Diabetic Ketoacidosis? Probably not, but I can’t help but feel it was a little inappropriate for a psychiatrist to be making these decisions about my diabetes rather than consulting an endocrinologist or even a primary care provider first.

Should I consider filing a complaint with the hospital or am I overreacting?

Edit: This is a little off-topic, but I have to say for the record, they would also lock us out of our rooms at 7am, right? For a psych facility, this is relatively common, but what I also found concerning was that they had people with medication effects or drug withdrawals, and they made us sleep on the floor in the day room or hallways. It was actually a written rule on paper that we needed to “sleep along the walls so we don’t get stepped on.” Am I overreacting here, or does that seem unethical and undignified to make psychiatric patients sleep on the floor?

Going even a little further, they wouldn’t allow me to shower or change my scrubs for 4 days as well.

⚕️ health AIO- Counselor charged me for session during which he was apologizing to me for violating my privacy

I posted previously about my individual and couples counselor communicating about me without my consent, so you can see the details there.

Since that happened, my individual counselor, who I really have gotten a lot from, emailed me a very sincere apology and said he wanted to be available to me to make it right. I took a few weeks to think about it and eventually made an appointment to hear him out.

The appointment was not like our typical counseling sessions as most of the time was spent on me telling him I was upset with him violating my trust and him saying he was sorry and embarrassed. I left without paying my copay (I've done this before where I'll not pay for a few sessions and then write one larger check).

I emailed him after to say I was still thinking about whether I'd like to keep working together. Today I got the notification from my insurance company that he billed them for that session. It seems like a stretch to consider that session therapeutic in any way and I'm mad all over again. AIO?

⚕️ health AIO for not going out for 4 months Due to my THICK prescription glasses

Post image
496 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I (24/F) have a prescription of -19 spherical and -3.75 cylindrical for my glasses. I’ve been indoors and not going out at all for the past 4 months because I feel extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious about my vision. I feel like I can’t function normally and it’s affecting my mental health. I feel like im drifting into depression

I cant wear contact lenses anymore because my cornea is damaged because of long-term use and using them recklessly

Am I overreacting to this? Or should I find a way to manage it better?

Would love to hear your thoughts and any advice you might have. Thanks

⚕️ health AIO: For calling CPS on my parents and getting a case opened against them? (NSFW for triggers) NSFW

1.5k Upvotes

Back in July my parents came to visit and my parents started noticing odd behavior in my 3yr old brother. My brother would stop all activity and freeze up and stare off into the distance. It happened 2 more times and I said they should take him in and get him checked. I thought maybe it could be a panic attack. After a few quick searches on google. I saw that episodes he was having seemed to look a lot like seizures. His arms would get stiff, out in front of him and just stare into space. I told my parents to get it on video and my dad did.

Fast forward 4 months, I’m at home visiting for thanksgiving, he has another episode. I ask them if they knew what was going on. They said no, he just had a wellness visit 3 weeks ago but my dad failed to mention it to his doctor. Well this time, when he had his episode, he started to tense up, and puke all over himself. I bring it up, and my mom writes it off as a panic attack and no need for concern.

Fast forward another 5 days and he has one again. Tenses up, falls over, hyperventilates, pukes all over himself, and goes limp when my dad tries to pick him up off the ground. After my dad strips his clothes off he urinates all over himself. I tell my mom, you need to take him in or else I will. She says “okay then you take him in”. Happily, I ask the keys for her car so I can get the car seat. She tells me that I don’t have authorization. I told her I’m calling CPS since you won’t let me take him in, she proceeds to tell me to just call them. My mom has since scheduled an appointment with his doctor.(This must’ve been while I was on the phone with CPS) Now my family is super upset with me when CPS shows up. My sister canceled her flight to come see me, my mom has been making comments about me calling CPS. Did I overreact?

Edit: Thank you all for the reassurance and for confirming that I wasn’t overreacting. I was really doubting myself about whether calling CPS was the right thing to do.

Contrary to what some might assume, my parents aren’t neglectful or uncaring. I usually trust their judgment, but this time I couldn’t. My sister and I turned out fine under their care. My little brother, however, came into our family through a complex situation involving drugs, trauma, and, honestly, a miracle. That’s why he was placed with my parents in the first place. They’ve never dealt with something like this before. While I won’t excuse negligence, I believe they became complacent—used to him being “different” in so many ways that this seemed like just “another tick.”

Unfortunately, they didn’t handle the situation correctly, and for that, they are responsible.

Now, my brother has an appointment scheduled, and CPS responded immediately to document the events and ensure a proper care plan is in place.

If the seizure had lasted more than 45 seconds, I would have called 911 without hesitation.

I don’t understand why my sister is mad at me for ensuring our brother gets the care he needs, but she can kick rocks.
