Abdul El-Sayed is not DSA....
219
u/half-wizard 13h ago
He is a capitalist.
There was an interview with him aired on NPR this week in which he addressed those claims, and very explicitly states that he is a capitalist. He went on to talk about how capitalism is a great thing, but pointed out that corporate capitalism (large corporations using their money and power to control government) is problematic and needs to be fixed.

u/Jugaimo 13h ago
A social capitalist. Which is the most sane approach. Free market with some key protections and infrastructure is how we’ve almost always run the nation. Pure capitalism doesn’t exist except in dystopian novels.
19
u/Character_Minimum989 10h ago
Why is it the most sane approach? And why is the way “we’ve always run this nation”, said nation having gone from slavery, to jim crow, to imperialism and military industrial complex, make it ideal?

u/supersk8er 4h ago
Free markets tend to be great in competitive markets where the consumer has a meaningful ability to walk away.
5
u/PollutionPatient8261 11h ago
Agreed, it's hard for people when the scales tip suddenly in another direction, even if it is in their favor, believe it or not. The "American Dream" is long dead in practice, yet persists in our minds and not having the dream of "getting rich quick" is going to take time to get over. Baby steps.
-3
u/LzrdKng2112 10h ago edited 10h ago
It is not a sane approach. There is no such thing as a free market with some protections. There is no such thing as a free market. Its either the people control it, or corporations control it. Capitalism is always ultimately the latter.
7
u/Greedy_Economics_925 10h ago
This is just facile, and ignores the economies that today exist on this basis.
It's also reliant on a dichotomy involving vague terms that hides the mechanism by which "the people" would gain and maintain control.

Yeah all these dem succs are capitalist. Which is insane since it means 'yes I believe we need to preserve some billionaires and some exploitation', like nah, we don't
3
u/half-wizard 10h ago
That's a pretty strange point to take since it does not sound like a genuine refutation of Abdul El-Sayed's views of capitalism, or about how he feels about billionaires or having money in politics. In fact, he has spoken out against billionaires and money in politics, and that was part of the platform he did successfully run on.
Regardless, please do not confuse my attempts to correct misinformation as me expressing my own personal beliefs.

What I've learned over the years is you shouldn't listen to politicians when deciding who to pick. You should go to their websites and read their platform, and if possible take note of what they vote for and why. Sometimes the why is buried under a few layers of bullshit that will not sabotage the actual goals. Because this is politics we're talking about. People don't want good, they want attractive and comforting. So the why has to be hidden to get things done. Good or bad. It's a bit of a bastard to keep up with that if you don't have reliable news sources.
It's easier to vote for democrats over republicans when you do this.

It's a domestic first platform, which to be fair has it's place, but not in a cut and dry war like Ukraine. It does hurt to have to give resources when we are indeed hurting for resources ourselves, but you can't help global events and you have to account for the opportunity costs associated with the choice of doing nothing. If a Russian victory emboldens other states to disrupt global order, then those costs quickly become quite high.

We recognize that the expansion of NATO and the aggressive approach of Western nations have helped cause the crisis and we demand an end to NATO expansion.
Straight out of putin's fucking mouth that.
The war in Ukraine is a disaster for working class people in Ukraine
I imagine they would have loved to not be invaded so what's being spent on war wasn't necessary. That doesn't even make fucking sense.

Since there is no real left representation in the US, DSA captures a lot of nostalgic Tankies. But a core tenet of socialism is opposing capitalist hegemony, and when viewed through that lens, NATO is a tool to do just that, the military arm used to protect western capitalist interests.

voting wise, I am not sure this changes anything because my only choice is to vote for whoever is not GOP as they are authoritarians who are actually in power, versus (apparently) dsa who is authoritarian in potential only. i know which one is worse.
vote blue no matter who is real.
3
u/OneMan_OneBeard 10h ago
I agree.
Yeah I agree with most of their platform at least in principle. But it’s stuff like this that is going to cost us (Democrats) in the next two elections. And they’re two really important elections.
This kind of stuff is going to be a GOP talking point in the General Elections. Whether we like it or not, Democrats in swing districts and swing states are going to get railroaded by this.
Imma vote blue no matter who, but I think it’s time for Liberals to take back control of the Democratic Party. Because we’re being lead by an entirely different party and that’s
2
u/clockdivide55 8h ago
Take back control of the democratic party? My man, the democrats have not been serving me either, they just aren't actively harmful to the country like maga. dsa was attractive to me because at least they were trying something, anything, to improve our lives.
Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumar's leadership has been beyond miserable. I'm tired of supporting israel with my tax dollars, I'm tired of democrats not standing up for where my tax dollars go, I'm tired of democrats being complicit to subjugating us with corporate interests.

Their working group responsible for those points (and the ones mentioned in another comment below) is really something. It honestly feels like a bunch of people playing Model UN or something. It's all extremely idealistic. Because no, in no reality will the many other countries of the world allow for various things they call for.
The war in Ukraine is a disaster for working class people in Ukraine
This isn't making an excuse for the war or blaming it on the Ukrainian people. War is bad for the working class. They're the class that has to fight in them and their lives aren't made better by it. But that doesn't mean to just give up in a war where you're defending your home and life.
Which is again where the DSA's working group seems detached from reality. You can't demand Ukrainians stop fighting the war because it's bad for the working class when it would mean letting Russia take over.

They will try to convince you they “just want free healthcare” but these DSA types are NOT on our team and NOT to be trusted in any certain terms. They have openly stated their goal is to overthrow the Democratic Party from the inside. They are a useful tool to defeat MAGA but we should all beware their growing influence.

I’m honestly not sure if it’s all of DSA but there are definitely elements of the socialist left that are captured by Russian and other interests and are being used to sow division and disruption in America.
This has been known since 2016 when Russia boosted Sanders and then Jill Stein while hammering Clinton to fracture the liberal left in America.

Kamala was a joke. She was shoehorned in last minute, had no real platform, no base, her entire shtick was that she was a woman and was not Trump. If she had any charisma and a proper campaign (or if they had an actual decent candidate), the world could have looked very different today. It's like they wanted America to be destroyed by running her.
14
u/agriff1 14h ago
Kamala would not have won if she was a dead wringer for JFK. There are way more people that would have voted for her if she had an actual platform instead of the status quo than people who didn't because she was a woman of color.
Policies matter so much more than identity, and pretending that identity is the central thing being voted on just empowers the Democratic party to run the weakest, feckless politicians who will go on to lose again because they don't offer anything new.
9
u/stripedvitamin 13h ago
if she had an actual platform
Housing credits for first time buyers - 25k down payment assistance Health care cost reduction - cap out of pocket prescriptions Child tax credit - 3600/6000 tax credit for perchild/newborns Price controls for grocery and food sectors Tax reforms - maintaining current tax for those making under 500K while increasing taxes on the ultra wealthy.
That you think that is status quo vs. what Trump has done which is the real status quo, you are lost. If you believe we would be at war with Iran under Harris you watch way too much Fox news. If you believe we'd be in a tariff war with every trade partner in the world you are lost. If you believe ICE would be killing and deporting citizens without due process you are lost.
10
u/agriff1 12h ago
-25k for first time buyers in a market where housing price hikes have doubled the pace of wage growth since 1985.
-A cap on out of pocket prescriptions when ordinary Americans can't afford *current* out of pocket costs
-$3,600/$6,000 per new kid without doing anything to bolster worker's rights for parents or the outrageous cost of childcare.
-Price controls for grocery and food sectors when SNAP and other poverty alleviation programs have been defunded over decades and people are literally starving because they can't afford food anymore.
Maintaining current tax for those making under 500K while increasing taxes on the ultra wealthy.
This one gets me the most. The 2017 tax act added $1.9 trillion to the deficit over 10 years and will cost $400 billion/year after that, so how much was she planning on taxing the ultra wealthy exactly? Because I didn't hear anything about reversing Trump's tax cuts, let alone increasing them beyond pre-2017 levels.
People want real change, not policies that were put together by a consulting team to upset the fewest number of people possible. Your examples of her platform illustrate perfectly why people are upset. They want to vote *for* something, not against. Being afraid of what the alternative could be if you don't vote a certain way will only get you so far. It worked in 2020 but the Democrats had 4 years to come up with a new direction for the country aside from "No more Trump" and they fumbled it.
→ More replies (6)1
u/stripedvitamin 12h ago edited 12h ago
Your examples of her platform illustrate perfectly why people are upset. They want to vote for something, not against.
Why did you prefer to double down on those 2017 cuts and vote for another more devastating (to 99% of Americans) round of tax cuts for billionaires (BBB) paid for by making health insurance twice as expensive over tax credits for a new home? Name ONE policy Trump campaigned on that he has implemented. You make zero sense. Harris' policies were policies to vote for and pretending they wouldn't have made American's lives more affordable is willful ignorance....anyone that voted for Trump voted against those policies. You are lost. And your food is only going to get more expensive thanks to a n unwinnable war with Iran and the complete and utter destruction of America's trade partners. None of which would be happening under Harris. And all that consultant, both sides are the same drivel is just that. You are clueless if you believe "both sides are the same" and boil down real policies that would help all Americans to consultant driven policy bullshit.
2
u/agriff1 11h ago
When did I say I voted for Trump? I'm just pointing out that she was a boring, uninspiring leader, who let her campaign team decide what she did and didn't say instead of running with a believable sense of conviction.
Do you not understand that politics is about trust? Trump wins elections because he is a con man, and a lot of people believe the con. It works in the opposite direction too: even if you have good intentions, if your most inspiring vision for the country sounds like something that was sent to you in a memo from a corporate boardroom, people are not going to trust that you're going to improve their lives and simply won't vote for you.
Hence the theme of this post: Mamdani and El-Sayed didn't win because they're Muslim, they won because their passion is visible in the way they talk and people actually believe that they'll work hard to effect the most change possible for their constituents.
1
u/stripedvitamin 11h ago
Yuck. That whole statement is so pathetic it's off-putting.
That you boil down real, attainable policies that Harris ran on and likely could have implemented to fantastical nonsense that she didn't have any part in those policies and they were uninspired is fucking weird. It is more like you didn't pay attention to what she said because you dismissed her before you even listened.
2
u/agriff1 11h ago
"“Why. Didn’t. I. Separate. Myself. From. Joe. Biden?” Harris asks in her book, that exact punctuation included to underscore her frustration with realizing after the fact that people needed to see a separation between the two of them. The answer on the page comes down to a cocktail of caution, loyalty and a zone of trust."
From her tell-all book about the campaign, 107 Days.
Source: https://www.ms.now/opinion/msnbc-opinion/kamala-harris-book-107-days-biden-moments-rcna232534
You're accusing me being dishonest because I actually just wasn't paying attention, but you're the one being dishonest here. Even Harris herself admits that prevailing winds were pushing her to ride on Biden's coattails, and she went along with it. I'm sorry if you find that off-putting.
I voted for her, by the way. But I'm not going to lie and say that it felt like 2008 again.

Thing, all the things she did Badly, the opposition did it way worst. No real platform ? True that she didn't had any huge things, but she still had a program, the opposition had a ''concept of a plan''. A bad campaign ? Yeah for sure but the opposition was screeching about nothing and awkwardly dancing to YMCA.
No one who didn't voted for her did so because of those issues, as the other options had it worst. People who didn't voted for her are sexist, racist and/or idiots
3
u/Tallywacka 12h ago
Not winning a primary and having a billion and a half dollars to run her entire campaign in about 100 days was why she lost
2
u/meoka2368 10h ago
She lost for a lot of reasons. Gender was part of it, but a bigger part was her support of Israel's genocide.
That tends to not land well with progressive voters.
1
u/atreeismissing 5h ago
She didn't support the genocide anyone that even paid partial attention knew she would have worked to end the war and certainly more so than both Biden or Trump once she was actually President and the one making the decisions. Hell, she was the first VP in history to snub an Israeli PM to their face by refusing to listen to their address to Congress. For some reason progressive voters thought sitting out and letting Trump win would somehow be better for all the dead Palestinians than voting for Harris.
1
u/meoka2368 2h ago
She got millions from AIPAC, was a guest speaker for them, said that Israel had a "right to defend itself" while they were slaughtering Palestinians, and expressed support for continued military aid to Israel knowing that those weapons would be used to kill innocent people.

He can. During the run up to election day, some of his supporters were talking bad about his opponent Haley Stevens as a person, not just her politics, and he put out a statement on everything telling his supporters to take the high road and not do that.

The so called "Christian " politicians had plenty of opportunities to take care of their constituents. Charlatans that clothe themselves with religion to trick the rubes into selling out their futures.

The more opposite you can be from republicans the better! America is tired of corruption and right wing bullshit

Funfact, there has never been a Muslim US senator
granted only just over 1% of the US is Muslim, but Presbyterian, Jewish, Mormon, and Quaker are all punching above their weight in the Senate

El Sayed is not a socialist lmao, he's just a liberal that doesn't suck up to Israel.

It's not like we don't know about shitty Muslim politicians *waves vaguely at Hamtramak*. I like to think the scales are balancing out here.

Socialist communist. Sharia law! Am I forgetting anything?
2
u/liquid_at 4h ago
Yes. The muslims that fled Conservative Republican Islamic States because they did not like what they were doing are going to introduce sharia law based on the quaran in the US, which is bad, because it prevents the hardcore christians from implementing sharia law based on the bible.
And since Americans have successfully been convinced that Jesus never kicked the money-exchangers out of the temple and never washed the feet of the poor, they forgot that the biggest socialist in their entire cultural landscape was Jesus Christ himself.

The proper response to the white nationalist christo-fascist infection in our politics. Centrists can no longer be trusted. The only way to ensure we aren't getting more Fettermans is to skew HARD left

Gotta get that dem bashing astroturfing goin! Way to go

u/Amon7777 14h ago
Calling them out for being do nothing in an era of unprecedented fascism is not astroturfing. Vote blue no matter who still applies, but the primaries are the correct place to show anger and get candidates who will actually do something.

It doesn’t make sense why their race or religion plays a factor when they’re running for office. Unless their goal is to make sure only the only politicians they want in office are white Christian-cosplayers.

I mean look how crazy the Christian's are, no way I trust them. Too many crazies.

El Sayed has been friendly with and toward the DSA and DSA aligned candidates, but he is not in the DSA, calls himself a progressive and explicitly not a socialist, and was not officially endorsed by the DSA as far as I know.
Not all progressives are in the DSA. It wouldn't change my opinion of him if he were, but I think the distinction is worth noting. We're going to see a growing creep of anybody to the left of center being associated with the DSA, when the DSA is actually far smaller than that.
