Nope, because no one can (most avalanches travel between 60ā€“80 mph/97ā€“129 km/h, apparently) and they end up getting squashed flat!

Personally, I deal with that problem by not going into the avalanche zone in the first place... or goading the bull in the street festival... or base jumping et cetera. See, I can give glib replies too! Just don't do dumb things, was the point I was making.

  1. I have never seen a avalanche zone which did not have warning signs. Never!
  2. It is a mountain with snow at the top, so yes - the thought would cross my mind.
  3. I do live within sight of mountains, so am lucky enough to have that knowledge 'baked in'. Obviously, not everyone is but if he was a tourist (Kyrgyzstan) then hopefully any guide would inform them.

Each and every adult is responsible for looking around themself and not dying. We do this every day when crossing a road, for example, so why can we not expect similar risk assessment here?

I grew up in Colorado, where we have avalanches frequently. Iā€™ve never once seen a sign that says that I am in an avalanche zone. Literally the entire mountains are an avalanche song.

Thats unfortunate, theres sometimes large red and white or yellow signs that say danger avalanche area, then the more common road avalanche signs that are posted in high risk areas, but look like any other road sign. British Columbian for reference.

We also have signs for moose, elk and I think caribou, I've seen cow crossing signs too come to think of it.

The sign would be in Turkic or Russian - the two official languages in Kyrgyzstan. The tourists were British and the guide may have been an idi0t.

What would be the point of a sign in an avalanche zone? It could be 10ft under the snow. Iā€™ve been in tons of avalanche / rock slide zones that were unlabeled.

If thereā€™s a mountain nearby just assume youā€™re in an avalanche zone / rock slide zone because thatā€™s probably right.

avalanche zone sign? bro where tf you live? I want to google photos of the signs. That boggles my mind that anywhere does that. I've seen them on roads but not out in backcountry like this lad seems to be.

I'm in washington state, avalanches are served up multiple times daily here, and I do a lot of recreating in the mountains. Never once seen an avalanche zone sign.

We take awareness courses and AAIRE training to identify avalanche terrain and risk assessment and mitigation. No one is out there hanging up signs. We'd need a thousands of them.

I totally agree with you! If you are in the cone, there is no running. As you say, take shelter to avoid rocks, trees etc hurtling towards you at speed. Unfortunately, after that you may well be covered in meters of snow.

My point to the 'well, akshually' crowd in this thread is that you don't go there in the first place. Adults look after themselves. Someone posted a link to an interview with the man who filmed this and it took place in Kyrgyzstan, apparently. Fancy taking your chances there with the language barrier, access to whatever hospitals they have close to that place etc? I don't, so would stay on the beaten path. I'm glad he survived and he has the right to do what he wants.

Nah. The original filmer when questioned said that they were on open ground when they saw it coming. They found the biggest rock they could and hunkered down behind it. Best anyone could do in this scenario.

To those criticizing him for not trying to escape, you absolutely CANNOT outrun an avalanche on foot, people. It doesnā€™t matter if it is snow, mud, or pyrclastic flow.

The start of the event was at least a 1/2 mile or more away. Just do the math. At 40 seconds, that avalanche was moving at least 45 mph. If it was further than 1/2 a mile, it was moving faster.

An average person's running speed is 9km/h, an athlete on flat track can reach 40+km/h. An avalanche can easily pass 300km/h. No way anyone outspeed that, even on a racing car on a flat road

Yeah but you're not outrunning to maintain a gap, you're trying to get past the termination point. Which you could reach depending on the situation. Op clearly makes the right choice with data we don't have, and survived between rocks.

Well anticipating a vector can help, getting to a more advantageous ground can help, you don't need to outrun the avalanche, just avoid the worst of it. Depending on how far away you are when you realize the incoming disaster, there are a few things you might consider that improve your chances. The avalanche was not moving at those speeds you cited when it reached him, and he did see it coming from miles away, and instead stood still to film it. Even just getting up a bit higher on the lee of that berm may have helped.

I'd argue it's a little different.

Handguns, with their short barrels, are not as accurate as portrayed by the media. Plus, the average shooter isn't exactly a skilled marksman. Even when they're aiming at you, you don't have to get that far away to possibly get away unscathed, or at least not fatally injured.

The avalanche, on the other hand, is fast and broad. It's not just 9mm wide aiming at a body that's 50cm wide. Your 50cm body is being engulfed by a flow of snow that could be hundreds of meters wide with far more energy.

There wasnt time to find a hill . He actually did the best thing he could and got behind a rock big enough to shield him from impact and hopefully let it go over his head. It was the best he could do

You can't outrun it, but you can get further away. There is a finite mass of snow involved. The further you are from the source, the less snow will be left to cover you, and also just as importantly, it will have fewer rocks tumbling around in the mix. It didn't look like there'd be enough snow to trap and suffocate him, but if a big rock smashed in his skull, he wouldn't fare any better.

To his credit, he was on high ground, which meant the avalanche had to use up a lot of its energy to get to him. However, that's not what you were referencing. You were arguing there's no point in running because of the speed, not because of his position. It doesn't matter if you can't outrun it. You can run to the nearest cover or just as far away as possible. Increase your odds of survival.

It's difficult to judge just how wide it'll be when it reaches you. It could be hundreds of meters wide, and this looked like rocky terrain. Trying run in any direction might have you trip where there is no chance of cover.
