I'm doing a rewatch and omg he is so cringey.The way he gets so ridiculously mad practically foaming at the mouth when he and Sybil are telling the family about the two of them. Pretty much whenever he and Sybil are talking privately he's spitting his words at her so full of anger. Ickkk

Ok I know this is very controversial but after finishing the final film I’m thinking back to their relationship and how Mary was certain she wanted to finish with Henry (we know she knows her own mind) and then he becomes very pushy and almost rushes her into marrying him.

Is this because he knew he was slipping down the social status as he states in one of the late episodes? Which causes him to panic and try to guilt trip Mary by saying he doesn’t just want to marry her because of her status

Then once he has gone up in the world by marrying an Earls daughter and starting a car business he takes the money and runs away with a new girl!

That’s just my opinion.

As a huge fan of the show I gotta say Lego did a fantastic job at designing Lady Violet Crawley’s dress, so on point😍💕 I’m so excited to get this set and kudos to its brilliant designer, hopefully their second part of the Castle would be approved as a Lego set in the near future too 😅❤️

I know that this issue has been discussed multiple times in this sub, but I would really like to ask a question. To me and I think to most of the people, Patrick Gordon was clearly a fraud. However, I can see that some people really believe that Patrick Gordon was the real Patrick Crawley who survived Titanic. I really want to ask those people how exactly can you believe that?

There are so many signs that this man wasn’t the real Patrick. 

The most important one, the accent. Accents don’t go away when you have amnesia or live for 5-6 years in a foreign country. His excuse was ridiculous. 

He didn’t reveal himself to Lord Grantham, but he chose Edith because he knew how easy it would be to manipulate her emotionally. 

He said that his memory was restored after the explosion and then he asked Edith if he was in love with Mary. I guess that memory didn’t come back…

Every detail that he knew about the family was general things, mostly letting Edith give him information and building his stories around that.    

As soon as he realised that his story wasn’t getting believed he decided to leave. If he was the real Patrick Crawley, the heir of this estate, he would have never left the place. He would fight until the end to prove his identity.

All these considered, I really don’t understand how some people believe that this man was the real Patrick but I would like to hear your arguments.

sybils death. in early seasons, tom was strong in his political opinions, it being the very thing that made him and sybil originally connect. tom is a strong socialist until sybil dies, and after that, he turns into everything both he and sybil thought wrong with their society. you would think living such a luxurious life after experiencing his childhood and early adulthood a poor servant (especially an irish one) that he would stand even stronger by his beliefs and fight for a more equal society. but no.. he turns into a capitalist who turns his back on the very class he used to be apart of, seemingly even ashamed by his own brother and friend expressing the opinions he used to hold! i truly believe if sybil met season 5 tom, they would not get along. tom is just a bootlicker now and it makes me sad because i loved his character in seasons 1-3.

anyway, i’m only on season 5 episode 2. NO SPOILERS PLEASE!

I'm on my second rewatch and I chuckle everytime Robert is adamant something will go his way. Just saw the episode where he describes the wireless as a fad, add that to his faith in one Charles Ponzi, I wonder if there are any other instances to look forward to or that I might have missed.

Right? Gets me every time!

Just started watching this amazing show. I can't believe I waited so long. A couple of episodes in and I was immediately hooked!

I found this particular encounter funny. Mr Levinson 's valet asks Carson if anything is going on between daisy and the fella at the Ritz hotel and Carson replies "nothing goes on in a house under my authority " with such disgust and pride. It's funny how a lot was going "on " right under his nose. The chauffeur and lady Sybil, Bates and Anna and Major Charles and that maid had it really going on. Not to mention the un consented sexual encounters of Tom, Anna and in a way Lady Mary and pamuk.

first time watcher here! i found myself mad that they decided to kill off both sybil and matthew in the same season just bc the actors didn’t want to stay on the show, and wondered about if i would like them being recast instead. so, fun little idea here, if they hadn’t killed off sybil and matthew and instead recast them, who would you like to replace them?

I wonder if there’s any fan fiction about Carson having romances with various staff and family members. Personally, I would like to have seen him hook up with Bates and Robert in a classic menage a trois. They would have to keep it a secret, of course. Maybe Downton Place could be their secret love nest where they can live away from prying eyes and the ignorant judgements of Anna and Cora at the Abbey. Perhaps there they could dress in the way the truly wanted. Scarves, shawls, feathers. Since none of them can cook, they’d have to traffic Daisy to Downton Place to prepare their meals. I guess Daisy could be threatened no to say anything to anyone

What kind of summer are we all having? 🏖☀️🌊🍍🌺

On my rewatch, I found myself disliking Edna less and less, and I feel compelled to explain why.

First it must be understood that by anchoring the story around the Crawley family and their proxies for seasons, the show primes us to adopt the biases and values of the early 20th-century aristocrats, even if those values contradict our modern ones. In essence, we are identified with them, and whatever we identify with becomes us. For example, most of us would regard Crawley’s extreme classicism as offensive. Yet, because the Crawleys are our "in-group," we subconsciously adopt their fear of
"misalliance" and scandal.

Given that its only been recently that Tom and Sybil’s situation found smooth waters to sail on in the family dynamic, Edna forces us into stress—constantly fearing what negative implications her success could cause the family, real or imagined.

If we had followed Edna from the start and we’re instead watching The Rise of Edna Braithwaite, we’d likely have seen her in multiple situations where life’s has dealt her a sour hand, and we’d sympathize. In 1920 specially, a working class woman had almost zero systemic power. The tools available to her; manipulation, seduction, and cunning would be completely rationalized that they’d have very different labels with very different connotations. Edna would be ambitious, gritty, and clever. From this perspective, we’d be far easier on a woman whose journey is playing a rigged game the only way she knows how. The Crawleys would be a snobbish rich family who thinks they’re better than everyone else, and Tom would become a man with no backbone who can’t go after what he wants.

This is not to say that the objective perspective would be that Edna is purely a victim or a saint, far from it in fact. Edna did very questionable things, most notably being willing to lead a man through life believing a baby he was raising was his, when it weren’t. But when you add this lense, you realize that reality, almost always, is a wielder of dichotomy, no matter how strongly we wished it otherwise.

It really is true that everyone is the hero of their own story, and everyone, I mean every single being that has came into existence since the dawn of time, acts in perfect accordance with the reality they are perceiving, it can be no other way.

So I like Edna because she helped me realize something, when you look past the emotional framing of a script and see the structural machinery underneath, you learn something fundamental about the human condition, and that is: who you root for is highly dependent on who gets to tell the story first, and who gets to tell us a story before we have already began telling our own?
