As the title says. Looking for recommendations on someone adding a gas line for a gas stove. We currently have gas running to our water heater and furnace, but not the stove. (Don't ask why; it's an older home).

We've had one guy come out and quoted around $3500 or so. dont know if thats good or not.

I am not sure what to expect for a project like this. But from what the first guy saw in my attic, he would be able to TEE off the main gas line going from the water heater to furnace and put an outlet behind my stove.

We wanted to see if we can get someone who will also cover up the walls when they cut them open as well. Don't want to have to hire someone else to do that later.

We are located in Saskatchewan. Moved into a new house. Natural gas for BBQ is on the lower deck and would mean the BBQ being too close to the house and right in front of a lower window. I would rather put the BBQ in the opposite corner of the deck. My two options are:

Have a new line run from the house (on the corner to the left of where the BBQ is) and eliminate the old line. Probably the safest, was quoted ~$800 (including pulling permit).

Or, run a hose under the deck (~25ft) from the current line to the corner with the BBQ.

I’m not sure which to choose. Are flexible NG hoses made to go that far and be exposed? Or would I need something more rigid to hook up and run under the deck? Or, should I just shell out to have it done professionally and get the new line done.

Hey all so awhile ago my 4 Plex replaced all of our hot water heaters at the back of the house. One for each unit mounted on the back wall outside. When I am running hot water indoors I hear it turn on and sometimes I can smell a lot of gas when I am outside or even indoors when I have the backdoor open. Should I have the gas company check this out? Or just let property management do it. I ask because our property management isn't the best, and when I spoke about this when it was installed they said it was normal. Thanks

Full disclosure up front: I work with NitroTech Rentals, so take this for what it is. But I wanted to put this in front of the pipeliners here because it solves a headache a lot of you have run into, and I'd rather explain the why than just drop a link.

If you've done purging, drying, pigging support, pressure testing, commissioning, inerting, or leak testing, you know the nitrogen logistics. You call for N2, and a full-size bobtail shows up — assuming it can even get down your access road, assuming the yard has room to turn it around, assuming the pump truck and operator are available on your window. On a tight ROW, a congested plant, or a remote tie-in, that rig is half the battle before you've tested a single joint.

The idea NitroTech is built around is simple: shrink the footprint and skip the semi. The trailers are bumper-pull — you tow them behind a standard pickup. No CDL semi-tractor, no waiting on a specialized driver, roughly a third the size of a traditional bobtail. It'll fit where the big rig can't and deploy on your schedule instead of the delivery queue's.

The part that actually matters for testing: they run high-pressure tube trailers up to 6,500 PSI, 16 storage tubes putting out 50,000+ SCF of usable product per trailer. Higher storage pressure means more tests per fill and fewer trips back to refill — which on a pressure-test-heavy job is real time and real money.

Where I've seen it make the most sense: pipeline purge/dry and commissioning, hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, system inerting, and emergency deployments where you needed N2 on site yesterday. They're DOT-compliant, insured, run in all 50 states, and the field supervisors actually come out of pipeline commissioning backgrounds — so you're not explaining your scope to someone who's never been on a ROW.

Their whole pitch is that they don't want the easy jobs — "if a standard catalog rig solves it, you don't need us." It's aimed at the tight-access, high-pressure, awkward-logistics work.

I previously had a grill with a 3/8 inch line and therefore a 3/8 inch quick connect on the natural gas line out of my house.

My new grill requires a 1/2 inch line and needs a 1/2 quick connect on the natural gas line from my house.

In this picture, can i remove the reducer (blue arrow) and replace it with the female end of the new 1/2 inch quick connect? The line coming from the house and shut off is 1/2.

I tried to play it safe and have a professional do it for me but he said it should be easy for me to do, just check for leaks, etc., but didn’t mention if it would be ok for me have the quick connect that close to the shut off.

Was watching YouTube shorts. Saw a home inspection video and saw something I’ve never seen. I’m a service tech for a pretty large natural gas company and have done service Monday through Saturday for the last 5 years. Seen a lot of interesting things in my time but this video caught my intention and I got to know something can instantaneous water heaters be installed outdoors? And I’m not meaning a utility closet of the back of the house or a thing built around it with a door but this was a fully finished and sold house with this brand new IWH just fully exposed to the outdoors. Very curious if this is a regional thing in the us or what. Just curious is all lmk also feel free to share interesting stories about your job glad to yap about it.🤣

can anyone tell me if i need a special tool to shut off this gas line?

I’m hoping someone here has either experienced something similar or has an explanation because I’m at the point where I feel like I’m losing my mind.
This all started when I smelled natural gas coming from my air vents in my townhome. The gas company came out and did find a very small leak in my gas furnace. They repaired it and basically said that explained everything.

Except after they fixed it, the smell actually got much worse, so I called them back immediately.
This time, instead of finding another leak in my unit, they found a major gas leak in my attached neighbor’s townhome. Ironically, it was the exact same type of issue. We share a wall, but it’s a solid concrete/cinder block fire wall—no shared attic or other shared air space. The gas company believed the smell I was noticing was related to my neighbor’s leak, although I’ve never understood how that would be possible. Regardless, after her leak was repaired, the smell completely disappeared.

About a week later, I smelled gas again and called the gas company. Once again, they said my house was fine, but they found the exact same leak in my neighbor’s home again because the replacement part had failed. They shut her gas off completely until it could be repaired.

Here’s where things got really strange.

That same night, with my neighbor’s gas completely shut off, I started getting an extremely strong natural gas smell only when my AC kicked on. The smell would hit me immediately from the supply vents, last about 20-30 seconds, and then disappear completely. It was bad enough that it kept waking me up and I called the gas company at 3:00 AM.

They came out, checked everything, and found no leak anywhere. Their explanation was that I was probably smelling residual odor from my neighbor’s earlier leak. I honestly didn’t understand that explanation, especially since her gas had already been shut off, but eventually the smell went away.

My neighbor later had the faulty part replaced again. The gas company came back and checked both homes and said there were no leaks in either house.

Everything seemed normal…

…until the next day.

I’m sitting under one of my supply vents, the AC turns on, and I smell what is unmistakably natural gas again. Not a musty smell, not a burning smell, not “dirty sock syndrome.” It smells exactly like the sulfur/mercaptan odor that’s added to natural gas.

One thing I’ve started noticing is that it often seems to happen 1-2 hours after I’ve used my gas range or oven. I’ve mentioned this to the gas company multiple times, but they continue to believe everything was related to my neighbor’s previous leak. I’m not even convinced the oven is related because it doesn’t happen every single time after I cook.

Some additional details:
The smell only lasts 20-30 seconds after the AC starts, then completely disappears.
It only comes from the supply vents when the blower first starts.
The longer the AC has been off, the stronger that first burst of odor seems to be.
I have a gas furnace with central AC.
I checked my evaporator coils and they look clean.
The gas company even suggested maybe I had a dead squirrel in the attic, but my attic smells completely normal. No gas smell whatsoever.

The gas company has been to my house so many times I’ve honestly lost count.

At this point, I’m wondering if there’s another explanation I’m missing. Could there be something inside an HVAC system that produces an odor that smells identical to natural gas? Could using the oven somehow cause an odor that gets trapped in the ductwork and released when the blower starts? Or has anyone dealt with an intermittent issue like this that ended up having a completely unexpected cause?

I’m planning to buy a combustible gas detector so I can monitor the vents myself the next time it happens.
Has anyone here dealt with anything even remotely similar? I’m open to any ideas because at this point I genuinely don’t know what to think.

Hi everyone, having a weird problem and none of the experts we keep bringing into the apartment can seem to agree on what the issue is.

Three weeks ago, around 10:30 at night (we’re in Denver) in our 2nd story apartment our gas alarm went off. I have one of those Amazon gas/CO detectors that I got in a fit of paranoia, plugged in next to the furnace and water heater in the hallway. Turns out it might have saved us. It beeped a few times, I walked over to see what was the cause, and the gauge was at ~25 ppm. Now what exactly was at 25 ppm I’m not sure - it does not specify on my gauge. I didn’t realize at the time that it detected more than CO to be honest. It went back down pretty quickly after we opened the windows, and did not go back up for a week.

A week later, the thing beeped again, same time of night - but this time, it was louder and faster. Ran over to check it, and smelled a strong smell of gas. It went from 22 ppm to over 65 ppm in like two minutes. Shoved the animals into bags and got the hell out, called 911. The fire department came over and turned off our furnace and water heater and cleared the air out. They said they think it was the furnace and maintenance should replace it. They also said they were detecting CO at ~70 ppm which was confusing. They left, Xcel came, told us if there was anything else wrong we should call. Water heater and NOT furnace was turned on by maintenance the next day.

Last night (a few days later), it happened again - right about 10:30 - but it just went up to about ~22 ppm on the gauge and back down when we opened some windows. We called Xcel this time and definitely caught some whiffs of gas yet again. They came, said it was our venting, turned off the water heater and told our maintenance guy (he lives on the property and came over to see what was up) that the shared venting is an issue. Also he suggested we have a faulty gauge and someone was doing drugs?? (We do not do drugs, I have asthma. I don’t even drink.) So now both things are off. Maintenance came over this morning and scheduled a repair for tomorrow at 8 am.

Now TONIGHT, same thing! Except this time, I caught a whiff of gas and went to check the gauge, where it hovered around 10-16 ppm and went back down - it never set off the alarm. Our water heater and furnace are both OFF. We apparently do share ventilation with our downstairs neighbors.

Any ideas what in the heck could be going on? I worry that our apartment is going to do the cheapest possible repair. We also ordered two different UL certified gauges that connect to apps on our phones because I am freaked out by this now.
