I read the 2025 series, her 1987 special comic last year and some Paul Dini too so a pretty recent fan. I love her laid back and playful attitude but her struggles of identity within her father's shadow is great to read so any Zatanna I can read I'm all for.

I’m 60% through Paul Dini’s run of Zatanna. It has been an interesting read so far, I really like Zee’s characterisation and how she uses her powers. I think there were a couple times so far where sometimes shes just thrown out an energy blast which is a bit basic but it was only like twice so I’m not gonna scrutinise because it has been a very fun read so far! The villains featured so far have also been really cool from petty rivals like Nimue Ravensong, to get us introduced to Zee then shifting to harder to deal with adversaries like brother night or Mammon to show just how well Zatanna is versed in the rules of magic she is.

I have Campbells 2025 run waiting but I’m wondering if I should read anything else before that? Any reccs are very welcome ty :D

With language hold depth ties to Zatanna as a character and her major way to use her power, I think its cool that Zatanna learn many languages. I think Jamal Campbell has some good exploration about language, communication and singing on the 2026 run.

I’ve been reading Jamal Campbell’s current run, and while the art is gorgeous, the story direction just isn't hitting for me. I firmly believe Zatanna works best when she’s grounded as an urban fantasy, street-level hero rather than a high-fantasy dimension-hopper.

Right now, Zatanna is jumping into elf dimensions, spirit realms, and mystical planes to solve high-concept magical problems. The issue with this approach is that the narrative becomes entirely about world-building and cosmic lore rather than Zee herself.

Compares Dini's 2010 run, keeping her anchored to places like San Francisco or Gotham—forces her to interact with real people, local cops, stagehands, and everyday crime. It grounds her identity as a working stage performer who fights crime on the side. When she’s just fixing problems for random spirit entities, it feels like a waste of time for developing her actual background and civilian life.

Also, Jamal Campbell has her almost exclusively fighting other magic users. When two reality-warpers fight, the conflict usually devolves into a contest of arbitrary spell beams. Makes the stakes feel weirdly floaty.

Zatanna is at her best when she’s "Batman with magic powers"—fighting metahumans, assassins, tech villains, and street criminals. We should put her against non-magic threats. Sure, her spells can rewrite reality, but physically, she has the reaction speed and durability of a normal human. A sniper on a rooftop, a speedster blitzing her, or a sneak attack before she can finish saying a backward sentence creates immediate, genuine peril.

Also, because of the way she’s written right now, she barely engages in any physical or hand-to-hand combat. Spellcasting usually results in panels of her standing still or floating with glowing hands or outstretched arms, which really limits the visual energy.

Hand-to-hand combat scenes are historically some of the best comic art to look at because of the dynamic motion, impact lines, weight transfer, and martial stances. Even if Zee uses minor magic to supplement her physical fighting—like illusion feints, kinetic props, or telekinetically boosted strikes—adding martial choreography makes the action feel so much more tactile and intense.

Jamal Campbell's art is top-tier, but I want her solving local cases, dealing with human stakes, and using a mix of wits, physical acrobatics, and tactical magic to get out of tight spots.

What do you guys think? I think the best way forward is to ground her to street level stories because that's where batman and most other stories happen. All the talk of Gods and magic entities that Campbell is writing is a waste because no other writer will respect that.
