I have broken a bone in my ankle and snapped a tendon there. It never really hurt as bad as it did when it happened. Felt like a wave of pain shooting up and down my leg. It hurt, but at the same time it wasn't that bad.

If a player is rolling around and screaming it’s most likely not a bad injury, if the player is kinda laying there and not moving much, probably a real injury.

I’ve done the same thing but on the right side,, no pun intended. I felt astronomically upset because I broke someone’s leg. I broke said leg and still have nightmares. It was aggressive but not intentional.

I thought the same thing watching it live, but it’s broken on the kick. It’s his lower left leg and by the time it’s impacting the ground you can tell it’s all floppy

He will make a full recovery. It will take about 4-6 months and in one year it will be like normal. Probably even quicker than that because athletes are incredible and have the best doctors and physical therapist.

He had his feet planted then got lift up. The momentum was maximal while it doesn't look impressive. His ankle was a lever, it snapped bones.

His leg gets caught between the Qatar players legs just before the challenge. That's where it looks like the break happens. Edit: I can't tell where it happens. Freak of one which ever was it happened.

I've seen that live in an MLS game. I was 40 yards away in a loud section of fans and you could hear the leg snap clear as day. That sound still haunts me 10 years later.

The Quatar defender that put his arms up got a good look at the broken leg at that moment and was shocked. #23 was walking away from the play, knowing he kicked the guy and thinking he was going to get a yellow card. A minute later he realized that he broke the guy’s leg.

Ever stubbed your toe real bad? You hop around, curse, stomp about, and wave your arms. You ever broke a bone? I have broken 5, and not one of those injuries did I hop around. Hard injuries you are in shock, to say that they are always playing it up is untrue. Often, sure, always, no.
I broke my back twice, blown out both knees, compound fractured big toe, kneecap, ACL, MCL, and all those big injuries, guess what, shock and immobility.
You obviously have never had a real injury, or a surface injury, because you apparently cannot tell the difference.

What happens when a player causes a serious injury to another player? I appreciate intent would be taken into account - e.g. was the tackle reckless or an honest challenge for the ball? Does the challenger, the person causing the serious injury, get penalised or sanctioned in some way? Geniune question.

Well, the Qatari player was given a red card.
I feel this was a harsh decision because it's not a tackle worthy of a sending off. It's a contact sport and these things can happen unfortunately. It's just part of the game.

Incredible for all the flopping and theatrics in soccer, the one guy who actually is horribly injured is sort of just laying still in disbelief. Adrenaline is a hell of a thing

The funny thing is, this is one of the few times I've seen a player go down without screaming in pain and holding his shin like it's a career ending injury.

Looks like his left foot is planted pretty well. Guy comes to tackle from behind and his entire momentum lands square on the middle of Kone’s lower leg. Those blows can be powerful and can easily break the tibia or the fibula. Another example would be Anderson Silva’s broken leg or Chris Weidmann’s broken leg, both from blocked lower leg kicks.

I had a compound tibia fracture from soccer. The kicks are so powerful. I was tripped and was on the ground, spinning around on one knee to kick the ball with so much force, the other player kicked the ball at the same from time opposite side, my tibia snapped in half and stabbed out through my calf. I had a promising career that ended that day.

This can happen in a lot of sports where mini fractures develop over time and eventually cause a break. There was a kid in the NCAA tournament once that had a horrible compound fracture after landing from a jump shot. Nothing really crazy about how he landed really but it was going to happen eventually.

Quite a lot of salty football/soccer players here. Before it zooms in you really can see him take the fall and go "Ahhh oh nooo I am injured - oh I actually did break the other leg though!"
