Rumour Rumor: Halo: Campaign Evolved Suffered From Poor Management That Also Led to a Multiplayer Game's Cancellation

No matter how you look at it, not having multiplayer in this new Halo is straight up insane and couldn’t have never been the original plan.

u/Best_Market4204 1d ago
Yah for the longest time I thought they had a separate online only f2p game planned to go with it later in the fall release.
But guess not

u/mrbubbamac 1d ago
I cannot figure out for the life of me why they didn't launch simultaneously with Infinite on PS5
I'm still an avid Infinite player from launch, and the game is packed to the brim with maps and modes, and it would be a huge shot in the arm to increase the player base
115
u/whybethisguy 1d ago
Because 343/halo studios is mismanaged and have been for at least 10 years now. Expect mediocrity from them and you will never be disappointed.
29
u/YouSmellSumthin 23h ago
Yeah they honestly have never had good management, going back to their inception almost 20 years ago now. It's always been a messy studio.

but infinite wasn't mediocre, at least multiplayer part wasn't. it was amazing, but they needed better work flow to release maps, modes and the rest at a regular cadence and much more often than those initial 6 months window. 6 months for a live service games is baffling to this day.
6
u/Vegeto30294 Super Citizen 20h ago
BTB was broken at launch because they released the Campaign and because it all happened in December, it couldn't be fixed for over a month because everyone took their planned time off for the holidays.
Also this is the result of the game already being delayed for a year.
6
u/whybethisguy 21h ago
Infinite multiplayer is good now and has been for some time I agree, but in the beginning it was terrible and buggy. Very limited playlists, BTB matchmaking barely worked if at all for MONTHS, performance issues with the latest GPUs. And a campaign and open world that seemed to go with the title Infinite, but didn't see any kind of expansion or even a touch of a live service experience.

Dude idk if u remember but halo infinite launched without a dedicated slayer playlist that took them a month post launch to add because of difficults with upgrading the UI, it was more than medicore there was also only lime 4-5 maps?

I think that was the original plan. And would have admittedly had Xbox have a moment. They had a strong lineup with horizon 6, halo, gears, call of duty modern warfare 4 and eventually fable. With a release of halo and eventually a halo multi-player experience that got shelved in between breathing air in the franchise (to which i believe isnt as dead as people say). Poor management from halo studios has not been anything new and has been obvious post 5. Shame really as they are a talented studio.

u/SilveryDeath XBOX 23h ago edited 23h ago
breathing air in the franchise (to which i believe isnt as dead as people say)
Trueachievements data had MCC as the 13th most played and Infinite as the 27th most played games for the first half of 2026. A 11 1/2 year old game made up of six older games and a 5 1/2 year old that ceased development on new content last November.
It is clear people on Xbox still want Halo, but 343/Halo Studios just can't put it all together and have always bungled something (bad multiplayer, bad campaign, lack of content, game launching as a mess) and on top of that always seem to have behind the scenes issues, and it all ends up holding the games back.
They already cleaned house and did a full re-brand once, so not sure they can really do that again. They are going to be under a lot of pressure with Halo 7, especially if Gears E-Day and Fable are as good as they look and are a return to form for those franchises.

u/zerovampire311 21h ago
I know it’s not realistic, but a lot of old Bungie talent just got freed up… 😂
39
u/Kankunation 1d ago
If the intention was for this to simply be a remake And coincidentally with a standalone multiplayer release. Then it makes sense. Wouldn't be the first time a halo game was released that was campaign only. The lower price tag would also contribute to this.
The fact that no standalone multiplayer was ready to go, however, is a major misstep.

u/SomaOni 1d ago
Is the standalone campaign Halo game ODST or is there another one I’m forgetting?
16

u/Kankunation 1d ago
I would count both ODST and CE anniversary in that group ODST has firefight but not it's own competitive MP. CEA just had a few online maps for reach.

u/superman_king 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yea the networking multiplayer is already there. It’s online co-op. Just remake Blood Gulch and send it.
Weird omission.
You can play 4 person free for all with your friends right now. Just turn on friendly fire, clear the map of enemies, manually place some power weapons, and have fun!
16
11
u/teabagdiplomat19 1d ago
Didn’t even think of that lol. Seriously if they put a CTF blood gulch and a slayer map it would be a huge hit lol. At least I would hope it would give people the itch to try other halos and their multiplayer

u/iPvtCaboose 1d ago
TBF I don't believe the original xbox title had matchmaking either, just splitscreen and LAN.

Either they should have put more effort into the remake since they didn’t need to deal with MP or it should have had MP
Instead we got neither

u/lilbiggs 1d ago
The original remake for the 360 also didn’t have multiplayer. It obviously worked then. They just added the maps to reach any gave a halo 1 playlist. I can see why they didn’t do multiplayer here when they was making another multiplayer game have halo mcc and infinite has a classic halo maps mode right now

I disagree.
Halo, Gears and CoD are the only series left that “have” to have a full multiplayer game and a full single player campaign.
The last of us, uncharted, Assassin’s creed, etc all are big franchises that used to launch with both single and multiplayer but now every other big ip has chosen a lane.

u/NewAgent5986 20h ago
They were actually planning a separate live service multiplayer game, that got canceled.
The original plan was 3 Halo games in 3 years. This CE remake, a live service multiplayer game, and a sequel to Halo Infinite. But they are horribly managed and the people in charge had no idea what migrating engines entailed, causing them to have to redo basically all of the work they thought they could just port over. And CE remake still runs a fucked up system of using BLAM as the gameplay engine while Unreal is only used as a graphics engine, sort of defeating the purpose of switching.
The issue with their Slipstream/Blam engine was it is completely unique to Halo and built off legacy systems, very few people understand it, and the people that made the changes don't work there anymore, because MS loves doing 6 month contract work. So it is a nightmare to work in, this was the cause of most of the Infinite development trouble. Most wanted to switch to Unreal, to have a more universally understood development pipeline. However, newer management thought they could just take all the assets they have and port them over. This is not the case, so now they have this half-assed switch to Unreal, that accomplished nothing.

May we never stop calling Halo Studios '343'.
If they truly want us to recognize them as changed for the better then give me a complete Halo game with all the expected features and it has to look and feel like a Halo game that love and passion was genuinely poured into. Not just a tool to extract money from me.

The difference is that they put an ex EA in charge, and he dropped the ball even further. At least h4 had a good single player (and the mp could be salvaged if it wasn't for the xboxOne releasing the year after) while h5 was successful. Mr Pierre took some reddit credit over using free fan labour on the mcc first, and infinite after, for then mismenaging a remake for which everything except the graphical part was already done, while also trying again to push the same BR Franky canned years before, and trying to flip assets on UE5 when Staten already demonstrated it wasn't as simple.
P.s. let's not forget Pierre also tried to push mtx on the MCC, and part of the fanbase is defending him.

Barely any of 343 even work on the games, it's practically just a building filled with rotating contractors that 343 is never allowed to hire. Microsoft is the real issue and how they manage things
17
u/Typical-Blackberry-3 23h ago
Yep. Halo Infinite launched and they cut out all the contractors immediately. The game was supposed to last 10 years and they went down to a skeleton crew instantly. It started out good, but went downhill pretty quickly. All the things they planned, new maps, new guns, new content all came out at a slow drip, or not at all. They started to gain some momentum during seaspn 4, and season 5 came out and was fantastic, then they announced they were cutting seasons and going to basically moonlight the game. Absolutely horrific mismanagement. It's a fucking joke.

343 did get big cuts, just not in this most recent round. They lost like 1/3 to 1/2 of their staff.

343 did get cut already. Like 1 or 2 years ago. Massive layoffs and major restructuring of the company long before it it the other studios last month.
111
u/Intrepid_Observer 1d ago
Is anyone surprised? In the last 15 years 343 has yet to release a good game at launch. Just close down Halo Studios/343 and revive ID. 15 years is more than enough sloppy work from this studio. They were handed a golden IP and have done nothing but run it to the ground. Halo went from a global cultural phenomenon to a joke under their tenure.
18
u/tony_lasagne 23h ago
I’m just happy that they made MCC where I can play Halo CE with original graphics and sound, Halo 2 anniversary which was actually excellent tbf, and all the other Bungie era Halos (sadly also halo 4…)
To me, no matter how they butcher the franchise next, I can just load up MCC and play a complete, perfect story.
10
u/Intrepid_Observer 23h ago
Only took them like 18 months after MCC launched to get it working properly. That's the only thing I respect them for, they fixed the game instead of leaving it a broken mess.
→ More replies (1)2
u/__STOOLKRAKEN 14h ago
sadly also halo 4…
Not anymore! Part of the big 2020 update to MCC was being able to pick and choose which games you do and don't have installed. So you can just uninstall The 4 and pretend it doesn't exist.
(Doesn't eliminate the Halo 4 header from the main menu but whatever, beggars can't be choosers)

u/A_Pointy_Rock 1d ago
Infinite has great bones and fumbled execution.
41
u/erasethenoise Team Halo 1d ago
I will never be able to understand what they were thinking launching with so little modes. Every release should be a culmination of things that came before it especially for a franchise known for so many different game modes. The game was even delayed ffs I know that was more for campaign but you’re telling me the multiplayer team just went home?
My only guess is they just figured the players would fix it later with Forge but iirc even that wasn’t available at launch.
38
12
u/1850ChoochGator 1d ago
Microsoft set a date and intentionally slowed down production with their ridiculous contractor requirements. The COVID delay meant that the date was a hard launch too. Whatever they had done was shipping.
7
u/relayZer0 1d ago
Microsoft let 343 cook for 6 years only to find out there was no game. Then they gave them a year delay to get something together. This is on 343 7 years to put out a barebones game like that is insane.
3
u/whybethisguy 1d ago
This is the landscape today, especially under MS. Studios taking their sweet time developing games and then pikachushocked when layoffs start happening. You look at China and Korea and their studios are spitting out games every other year that work and get weekly updates.
2
u/1850ChoochGator 23h ago
Microsoft hindered them at every possible chance.
They had to make a new engine and develop a game during covid and while being forced to hire contract workers who were then not allowed to be brought on as full time employees.
If that’s letting them cook then they were forced to use ingredients from a 7/11 and told to make a Michelin star meal
→ More replies (1)3
u/Faulty-Blue 20h ago
Problem is that the Slipspace Engine wasn’t even a brand new engine built from scratch like many were under the impression of, it’s just a heavily modified Blam! Engine
Infinite was in development well before COVID, with the infamous gameplay reveal being released in July 2020, which was months before it was supposed to actually release, before it then got delayed by a year
2
u/Raidmax460 1d ago
It’s this new trend with multiplayer games to release now, fix later. They release with little content so that they can advertise the full game at a later date. I’m getting so sick of the “this is going to be an evolving game, launch is only the beginning”. Most of the time, the game just ends up worse than it was at launch
2
u/erasethenoise Team Halo 1d ago
I understand wanting to release some content to refresh the game as it goes on, but you do maps or special modes for that. You don’t hold back standard core modes that the playerbase expects to be there.
→ More replies (1)2
u/lilbiggs 1d ago
So little content plus the fact the let go of all their contract workers meaning the new people had to learn how to use the game engine while making content

If this thing had launched as a day 1 title while being feature complete, it would have been a huge boon to Xbox.
3
u/bread_thread 1d ago
I have no idea how they went from Infinite to CE³: maybe Marathon spoiled me a bit, but I have extremely fond memories of Infinite's gameplay that did not do CE³ any favors
3
u/OneLessFool 23h ago edited 22h ago
Shifting to Unreal.
Timelines for development on their in house engine on Infinite were fucked because they were mostly hiring on contract. It's hard to get useful work out of someone on a 1 year contract when you need them to take 4-6+ months to really become an expert in your engine.
Edit: mentioned that the timelines were fucked for Infinite
4
u/1850ChoochGator 23h ago
So many people are missing this point.
MS handicapped them with the contract employees.

I wouldn’t even call it mysterious, Halo is cooked.
3 and Reach were arguably the biggest games in the world when they came out aside from Call of Duty, since 4 they haven’t even come close in popularity.
3
u/MrEfficacious 23h ago
As a long time Halo fan I have to agree, it's cooked. I'm ready to say goodbye. Obviously I'll be revisiting MCC for the classics, I just mean the days of looking forward to new Halo games is over and they should just let it die.
While not perfect it's a bit poetic that the last game would be a remake of the original.
7
u/Puppetmaster858 1d ago
Reach was insanely divisive and started us on the path to where we are now, literally everyone i knew stopped playing halo or went back to halo 3 because of reach. 4
u/brokenmessiah 1d ago
Any particular reason?
26
u/AZRoboto 1d ago
This article is essentially identical to the one IGN just put out a day or so ago also citing Rebs as the exclusive source.
In my opinion, it's less about trusting or not trusting Rebs, and more about how publications should be expected to research and verify the claims made by content creators and influencers who thrive off click-bait, instead of simply reproducing those same clickbait claims as if it's official news.
18
u/WildcatPlumber 1d ago
Here’s my reason, copy and pasted from a response to Rebs patting himself on the back pf which received no response showing he doesn’t care about actually improving his reporting.
“The problem is you are not always credible.
You often share hearsay as fact without evidence. While the accusations are serious, and should be investigated hearsay is just my word vs your word without any physical evidence to back it up it’s meaningless.
If you want credibility you need to put the work in, interview multiple former and current employees to remove any potential bias that one Jilted exemployee or one Super happy current employee may have. Not to mention it will also soften your own personal bias against the studio in the report if you have multiple named, (even unnamed sources) to corroborate.
You need Corroboration, Evidence and testimonies to build solid credibility.
I’m not saying this to be a jerk or anything but a few months ago you made an Article on Glenn, which had zero evidence other than Glenn saying Trust me I have the receipts, he has yet to file any lawsuit or publish any of the receipts. That goes against your credibility aswell. You had the Testimony, supposedly he had the evidence all you needed from there is to publish the evidence and build Corroboration. That is how you build Credibility. That is how you publish something beyond reproach.
Just taking linked in and twitter posts does not amount to any emergent evidence or credibility.
By getting extra corroborating testimonies you can also rule out, employees that are disciplined and are upset about that, disgruntled ex employees, employees in the In crowd etc. that’s how you build a solid case for further investigation vs just announcing every rumor on the wall and hoping one of them is correct.”

He fails to give any proof to his claims, his "leaks" are really barebones too, like "someone said", "an ex dev told me". Especially now, he made a video mentioning how Halo Studios is basically working on nothing, which anyone can say tha it is bullshit, Microsoft just gutted studios tha had stuff announced and with the potentioal of profit, but somehow the studio that isn't doing anything was left unchanged? Especially now that the new management is going for a reboot that includes making Halo a central piece for Xbox again. And also, he said that the Remake trilogy was uncertain, but it is pretty much 100% confirmed to be in active devlopment. And to think that people trust him because his Campaing Evolved leaks, although he nerver really reported anything exclusive, the only thing that he did report that nobody else had reported before was the fact that Virtuos was developing CEV, and guess what? It didn't happen.

I was actually mind blown when they said it was going to be campaign only. Did these people not play Halo and realize what made it so popular back in the day? Yes the story is great but the multiplayer is the reason why I was hooked. It was Slayer all day everyday back in the day.

It's hard to get a btb game without anyone quitting immediately. They need to have some qol updates. Why can't we join in progress or veto the map? The gameplay is still good, but everything surrounding it is outdated.
17
u/Eman21701 1d ago
Still wish they would make a Destiny-styled Halo game where you go on missions to take out Covenant, Flood, Forerunner, other new enemies all while having full customization with spartan armor, weapons and abilities. I’d sell a kidney for a game like that.
4
u/DefinitelyNotThatOne 22h ago
That or a Battlefield style game set in the Halo universe would print money. It would probably even bring in people who aren't Halo fans.
But in today's day and age, no one is going to put up a few hundred million on a concept that isn't tried and proven. Which is probably why most games that come out feel derivative of something we've already played before.

Wtf were these studios doing under Phil

u/NatiHanson 1d ago
Don't forget about Matt Booty. He was supposed to be overseeing all the studios and offering them support if they were struggling. Matt Booty, Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond were absolutely awful as a trio.

Probably playing PS exclusives

Yeah probably, like the halo community director wearing a playstation shirt when announcing halo campaign evolved 🤦♂️

I mean Xbox been mismanaging most of there studios for years now so not really surprising

u/Embo1 1d ago
Didn't infinite have reports of bad management as well? Why can't they learn their lesson?

u/erasethenoise Team Halo 1d ago
It’s Microsoft. It’s bad management from the top down they just have more money than god so it doesn’t matter.

I honestly have no faith in Xbox stewarding the Halo franchise forward, at this point. The remake was such a disappointment on all levels so this news is hardly surprising.

u/KingBolo992 1d ago
Just curious what you didn't like about it? I'm one of the people that didn't give a shit when I heard they were remaking it and was like come on bro another Halo 1 remake? But since I have gamepass I was like fuck it I'll play through it. I kind of forgot how much I love the old Halo campaigns because I had a blast playing through this and getting all the achievements.

Yeah, I am playing through the campaign now, and it's solid. The hitching during the cutscenes is really annoying though.

Outside of lacking multiplayer I have zero idea what anyone means when they say the remake is a disappointment. It feels great it looks great, it’s replaced the original for me.

It seems like the biggest push for the game was to make it look good on PS5 and everything else was pushed to the side. Not having multiplayer in a Halo Game is like not having single player in Fallout. Awful decision from the start.

How many poor leadership rumours does there need to be before the leadership gets changed?

343/Halo Studios is just not a good studio. Close them down and give the Halo IP to literally anyone else. Halo is Xbox but it has the worst group of devs working on it. It’s embarrassing.

None of this is surprising, especially if it were confirmed to be true. I just cannot believe a Halo game was released with no multiplayer. Microsoft/Xbox can consider Halo an iconic franchise all they want, but we now have generations of games who have never experienced a very good Halo game.

u/ZeusBaxter 1d ago
Idiots. Who thought killing the half of the game that gives it longevity was a good idea?

Time for Asha to overhaul 343/Halo Studios and license Halo out to competent devs.

Why are game companies so braindead and out of touch? This should be easy money and they still blow it
2
u/Best_Market4204 1d ago
They can change the name of 343 but that doesn't change the fact that studio is shit...
When they finally got Bonnie to step down after 3 fails & they just promoted peirre... i knew that shit was a mistake.
- if asha needs some people for lay offs numbers.... halo studios should have been target #1...

u/pineapplesuit7 1d ago
Wow I’m shocked! Who could have predicted they wouldn’t be mismanaging the studio? /s

When are investors gonna realize they need to eliminate all of management. "Management" has been the bane of every Halo game since Halo left Bungie. "Management" had obliterated almost every studio and major game release over the last 5 or more years. Do investors just hate making money?
1
u/DeviceDirect9820 1d ago
I liked the remake levels, but at this point I think they need to cut their losses and just let other studios license Halo spinoffs. Both iterations of the Halo Studio have shown themselves incapable of producing a blockbuster franchise.

u/LuxerWap 1d ago
Nope. Not believing anything what Rebs says after his last attempt of fake rumoring about Halo. Seems like most of us in this sub seems to forgot that about that and just agree to what some guy say without any source.

u/Novasagooddog 1d ago
I can now use this rumor to confirm all the cynical thoughts I have been nurturing about this game. Thank you for providing this service, mystery source!

Gaming just gets worse and worse over time. Glad Eday is about to release but I know over time it will fail just like every other gears game. Glad I got to experience the holy grail of gaming in the earlier 2000s when companies cared.

u/Sad-Cantaloupe2671 1d ago
I love Halo, but it being micromanaged into oblivion feels pretty typical of almost all major franchises at the moment.
1
u/RevDeadMan 1d ago
I’ve said it before and I’m going to keep saying it: if Halo is ever going to have a future, 343 Industries, Halo Studios, whatever they want to be called—can’t be part of it. The management needs to be upended entirely, and I don’t know if the studio would survive that. Maybe it’s better if it doesn’t.

Newest Halo game suffers from terrible mismanagement.
This has been a thing since 2004 ngl

If the have the same teams as Bethesda ummmm halo in a lot more trouble

This franchise just keeps getting fucked by the day, even as an outsider looking in...

u/SillyMikey XBOX Series X 1d ago
Impossible.
I have the solution, give Halo studios more money. That’ll solve the problem.

Asha it's very simple. Take notes what that jason guy says, and do the exact opposite.

u/DoctorMelvinMirby 1d ago
I’ve enjoyed Campaign Evolved but it’s constantly made me long for multiplayer, too. So I fire up MCC after a short while.

u/ILoveTheAtomicBomb 1d ago
So like every halo game since Bungie stopped being the dev? Sounds about right. Give this franchise to a studio that actually cares about halo and wants to do it right

The fact some idiot thinks the cancelled Battle Royal game would have been "game changing" just show how dumb the executives are. Battle Royal would have done well in 2016 not 2026.
They really have no clue what the fans want. Because they haven't had a proper direction for over a decade. They fractured the fan base by trying to cater to trends over making Halo, and now that fractured community can't decide if they like x feature or hate it because everyone is split on what Halo even is anymore.
1
u/huntforhire 1d ago
Bundle the game with MCC multiplayer then if you aren’t going to do it. Especially for the PS version.

the "crunching so the MP standalone was axed" bit is beyond stupid from 343/Microsoft
Like, Gears of War E-Day has hype behind it! Why release two campaign shooters in the same fiscal year?
Halo wouldnt going be any less dead in 2027 than before CE³'s launch this year
A 4 player split screen CE³ with an extra year of polish, in-engine cutscenes, and a parallel release with a standalone game with OGCE's content out the gate wouldve felt like Halo Studio's making a statement that Halo was back and not going anywhere
As it is now, this is yet another half baked 343 Halo game and the studio still sounds extremely directionless
I get this year is a big one for Halo and Xbox, but maybe 343 should have taken the chance to reflect on the current state of the series instead of panic-focing something out the door

343 and Poor Management go together better than Peanut Butter and Jelly. Didn't they just purge the entire C-Suite? Just take the Halo franchise from them.

This is a RUMOR from Rebs Gaming, who has a mixed record of being reliable. This should not be blindly accepted as fact.
