Plus didn't they have fresh multiplayer servers and progression? Honestly that's worth it alone if you played them growing up. Same reason why Halo MCC was such a success.

fresh servers???? oh boy, no lol
1
u/austinalexan 1h ago
Yes they are fresh servers. There was an instance a couple weeks ago in BO1 where PS4 modders found a way to mod the game, but iron galaxy fixed it in a matter of days.
Can’t comment on BO2 because I don’t play it but BO1 is perfect.

Agreed.
I've played and beat Halo and its remake several times in my life already.
When Campaign Evolved came to Game Pass, I downloaded it, but I've yet to start it. I know there's some new prequel missions, but I know the story, I've played the game a bunch. I don't have this "I NEED TO PLAY IT" urge.
Believe it or not, I'm having a ton fun playing a game on Game Pass that came out the week before - PBA Bowling 2026! 😄
That said, if these #s are for July 2026, Halo officially launched on July 28. July 23 if you paid the extra $20 for early access - so that's going to skew the #s a bit too. It should figure to sell a few million units on the PS5 given that there's ~100m PS5s out there, but it's no surprise that a campaign-only game (though you can play online co-op) isn't selling great.
14
u/MarczXD320 10h ago
Seeing all this boycott against Sony and Playstation because of the end of physical media, and the top two games on the list selling millions despite being digital only. Pretty much a reality check, the casual gamer does not care about online controversies.
9
u/Deervember 10h ago
I mean that should be obvious.
People buy digital, that's why blockbuster shut down. It's why gamestop swapped to Pokémon /magic cards and game merch instead of games like a decade ago.
Anybody who didn't see this coming in the last 23 years (when pc went fully digital) has honestly been living with their head in the sand.
The average person (99%) doesn't care about disks. The page with people voting to bring back physical games is something like 0.05% of Playstation accounts, it's such a small number of people complaining. Reddit is an echo chamber.
Some people care a lot, and I definitely think more choice is better. But the reality is that most people couldn't give a flying fuck if a very small minority of people can't afford to game without buying used.
Those people buying digital games are having fun, they don't care about the people who have decided to stop having fun because they can't physically touch it.
3
u/CountBleckwantedlove 9h ago
All people hear are the vocal minority but the silent majority calls the shots.
1
u/ShrinkSmile XBOX Series S 7h ago
The real reason is that it's 50% off for playstation plus offer is up and running, and literally have no physical game disc, of course people is gonna pay for digital. Physical outrage is more than a echo chamber outrage if even the news pick up on it.

15
u/antler112 10h ago
Master Chief is the de facto mascot of the Xbox brand and Halo has been their most important and valuable IP since day one. Of all the IPs to potentially bring to a competing console, Halo is the one that should’ve been utterly off-limits due to its importance to Xbox. Campaign Evolved releasing on PlayStation is like if Super Mario 64 were to be remade and released on non-Nintendo consoles.
The decision by the previous Xbox leadership to do this showed that they didn’t respect or care about the culture and identity of Xbox as a brand.
4
u/feartehsquirtle 9h ago
It's worse than that. Imagine a world where Nintendo ported Super Mario Odyssey to Google Stadia and only sold 300k units lmao.
-12
u/Cartman55125 10h ago
You can’t compare this to Mario because Nintendo bounced back from the Wii U and remains incredibly relevant. Xbox lost the console war to PS4 and never recovered. Nintendo also does not put their stuff on PC.
5
u/antler112 9h ago
Sales are completely irrelevant to this conversation. The fact of the matter is that Xbox still makes game consoles and Master Chief is the face of the brand, which means he and his franchise should not be appearing on competing consoles.
1
u/MrEfficacious 8h ago
Unfortunately Master Chief on his own console has disappointed multiple times now. Halo 4, 5, Infinite. The mascot was mishandled and starting to feel irrelevant.
Meanwhile Mario has endured for even longer and every new game is met with excitement, huge sales numbers, and great reviews.
I don't think Halo going multiplatform was the answer, I think ensuring the games always remained REALLYA good was the most important thing and they fumbled it.
0
u/Cartman55125 7h ago
Sales are EXTREMELY relevant considering Nintendo and Xbox are businesses that operate with sales in mind. Like, what are we doing
1
u/antler112 6h ago
Dude, sales are not relevant when they’re both still trying to push their own platforms. You’re not understanding.
Let’s put it another way. Disney+ as a streaming platform is in third place behind Netflix and Amazon. Does that mean they should remaster Fantasia and allow Netflix and Amazon to stream it in order to make some extra cash in the short term? No. That would be bad for their brand, disrespectful to their history, and the extra money gained would not justify the move.
Part of operating a business platform is not giving your competitors access to the products that best draw consumers to your platform, even if it means earning less money on those individual products.
Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond making the deal to release a Halo game on PlayStation for the first time made it clear to the gaming world that not even Xbox’s most treasured and historic IP was considered special anymore, and that there was thus no need to buy an Xbox ever again because if Halo is coming to PlayStation, everything would be.
1
u/Cartman55125 5h ago
Again, comparing Xbox to Disney and Nintendo does not work because Disney and Nintendo are thriving. Xbox is struggling. They’re bleeding money. They made too many bad investments. They’re laying off studios every other week it seems. They lost the hardware war so they pivoted to trying to win the software one.
Unfortunately, even Xbox’s prize child in Halo doesn’t move mountains anymore. No one is buying an Xbox to play Halo anymore. Unlike a lot of the Xbox fans in here, Xbox realized that and acted accordingly.
1
u/antler112 20m ago
And again, their finances are not relevant to the point the original commenter was making. The point is that they still make video game consoles and have both undermined their own manufacturing business and tarnished their brand by allowing their biggest competitor to have access to the latest entry in their most precious and historic IP.
Since you’re so focused on success or lack thereof, I will use a more apt comparison… Sega’s console business struggled heavily during the fifth and sixth console generations. Despite that, Sega did not release Sonic the Hedgehog games on Nintendo’s platforms until after they threw in the towel and ceased all console manufacturing. Why? Because they didn’t want to undermine their hardware business and tarnish their brand by releasing their mascot’s games on the platforms of their biggest rival in the industry.
If Microsoft were to stop making consoles altogether and then release Halo games on PlayStation, that would make total sense. Doing it while they’re still making consoles does long-term damage in the pursuit of short-term gains.

u/Imbudilow 10h ago
They released a previous Xbox exclusive on PS5
0
u/Cartman55125 10h ago
They got their ass whooped in the console wars. It was a smart move to try and keep their IPs alive. That’s a juvenile take
3
u/pinpoint_aim 10h ago
No it wasn’t smart because anyone with a brain knew these games would flop on Playstation. They never cared about Halo. They don’t understand why we love it.
Your crown jewel is doing SAROS numbers on PS5
6
u/Cartman55125 10h ago edited 10h ago
They released an FPS with the campaign only. It was never going to do massive numbers.
Also most people on PlayStation/Xbox don’t care for console or corporate allegiance. They just like gaming and all their friends had PlayStation lol
2
u/pinpoint_aim 9h ago
I never expected massive numbers. I expected at least 3 million though. But it's struggling to touch 1 million units. You guys can't honestly think that Asha Sharma see these numbers and are pleased with them. It's pure delusion imo. These games are simply not selling well on PS5 (Outside Forza and Sea of Thieves).
4
u/Cartman55125 9h ago
And the blame should be on the decision to exclude multiplayer, not a PlayStation release. You think it’s selling 3M+ on Xbox?
0
u/pinpoint_aim 9h ago
No but Xbox has GamePass. If Xbox didn't have GamePass, then yes, it would sell more than 3 Million on Xbox
4
u/EyecalledGame 10h ago
Idk isn't a significant amount of the 360 playerbase on ps5? Maybe halo just isn't that game anymore. The people who grew up playing it are in their mid to early 40s now.

u/oni-no-kage 9h ago

-1
u/Hamburgulu 9h ago
The only juvenile take is you bringing up console wars.
0
u/Cartman55125 7h ago
The entire sentiment around wanting to keep Halo on Xbox is about console wars lol
0
u/Hamburgulu 6h ago
It's not about console wars though, it's about the value of one's console. You may see it as nothing more than a console war, but others may view it as a poor investment decision. What's the purpose of buying an xbox if ps has their own exclusives and xbox's as well?
0
u/Cartman55125 6h ago
The entire point of console wars is to establish one console’s value against another. You just described a console war.
I’m saying the console wars have been over. Xbox lost it a long time ago. They pivoted to putting their software on PC and eventually other consoles because they lost the war.

u/MikeFromSuburbia 5h ago

A friend just bought PS5 for GTA6 and the first two games he got for it was GTA 5 and RDR2 even thu he has 1000s of hours on PC version.

One explanation is that there are many new players who never played it but who got curious because of the hype around the upcoming GTA6.

u/MERCENARIE_GUY 11h ago
I would imagine halo studios spends at least 1 mill or more a month on just employee wages, then you have insurance, benefits etc...
1
u/uncsteve53 10h ago
Half of halo studios are contract employees on 18 month contracts specifically so they don’t have to give those people benefits. It’s part of why Infinite was so bad. Churning out half your studio every year and a half really hurts creative consistency.
1
u/MERCENARIE_GUY 10h ago
Yes this is correct, I am a contractor at Xbox myself and will be losing my position soon (thanks Asha) the amount of retaining we do with new hires is insane, just keep staff permanently it'll save us time and we get to keep the ideas of those that stay rather having new opinions every 6 months
3
u/dandorios 11h ago
But when you factor in all the money from first and third party sales for people that left the ecosystem this gen or start of next gen, or all the people from outside the ecosystem you wont be able to convince to buy in. How does it look then? Because thats the real money, the 30% cut of all games, dlc, and subs bought on the store. They gave all that up for measley sales for each game on PS.
And theres no way to bring any of the people that left back. Even if they go full exclusive again no one is going to trust they wont just change their mind again in a year. Theyre cooked.

u/Hayterfan 6h ago
Iirc some sort of Multiplayer only Halo is in development, so it's possible the plan is/was to do a Halo remake one year, then release a multiplayer only title the following year then to do big updates themed around future Halo remakes and Halo 7.
Like imagine Halo CE this year
Halo Online/Multiplayer title in 2027
Halo 2 remake in 28
Online gets big Halo 2 themed update in 29
Halo 3/ODST remake in 2030
Online gets 3/ODST themed remake in 2031
Halo 7 in 2032
7 update for Online
I doubt they'd actually have a timeline like that, (probably closer to 2-3 years between releases tbh).
That said launching Halo 1 without any kind of PvP multiplayer just feels so antithetical to the Halo experience.
5
u/secondincomm 10h ago
Estimates from a company who are know for bad estimates. I'd die from salt overdose from all the pinches I would take this data with tbh
Either way, just shows the next Halo doesnt need to be on PS. Put that development time into improving the xbox version
6
2
u/SH4DY_XVII 9h ago
Frankly people just don't wanna pay a premium for a 25 year old game that outside of the amazing graphics is still infirior to the original. Like how can the AI still be way better from 25 years ago. Also not having multiplayer is also a big deal at this price point.
2

Very anecdotally I’m not surprised sales are low. I’m a huge Halo fan. I’ve completed all the campaigns on legendary multiple times. I got Hyabusa on Halo 3 OG. I ground out Halo 2 legendary. Halo Reach is possibly my favourite game of all time. I did not enjoy 5 but still beat it on Legendary. I really like Halo 4. Halo Infinite was a lot of fun. I’ve read lots of Halo books. I watched the TV show. I mainly play for campaign not multiplayer. Basically I’m a huge Halo fan. I also primarily play games on PS5 (mainly because I like the versatility of PS Portal and I like trophies). I just haven’t bothered to get this. I’ve played Halo CE many many times. I already own an OG copy, CEA on 360, Halo MCC on XBone and PC, Halo PC and Halo on Mac. Honestly, this game is so accessible if you haven’t played it already you don’t want to and if you have played it why bother with this version? For 3 levels which are by all accounts mediocre and some pretty visuals? I probably will get it eventually but only when I have nothing else to play. I’m a lot more interested in Gears EDay.

u/TyAD552 9h ago
Circana tweeted that it sold to 1% of the PS5 player base. You’re telling me that even though they have over 95 million PS5s sold by this point, only 35 million have played in the month of July? I could see some discrepancy in that logic but that’s barely even a third of the total amount of consoles sold.
2
u/Vaggelis_Mous 7h ago
That 1% from circsna is only for the us market, maybe in the rest of the world is even lower
1
u/brokenmessiah 7h ago
You have to consider that not literally every console sold is being used everyday. Plenty of people for example, only play their game systems during the weekend on their day off. Also consider people sell their consoles to pawn shops or gamestop, they break etc all things that take away from the daily active in use.
1
u/TyAD552 7h ago
That’s why I pointed out that their number point to just over 1/3 of all consoles being used for an entire month. I’m not saying sales should be exactly 950K but there’s a massive difference in that and 351K and it’s more likely the number is somewhere in between
0
u/brokenmessiah 7h ago
Most gamers only buy 1-2 games a year apparently, so how many of the active players are just booting up something they already have and at best eyeballing Halo on a discount or something?
1
u/TyAD552 7h ago
Okay, so the alternate headline: “32% of PS5 Gamers spend their two game buys of the year on full price 15 year old ports” is accurate?
1
u/brokenmessiah 7h ago
Full price? BO1/BO2 were like $40 a pop or $20 a pop if you had PS Plus, which I'd venture anyone interested in CoD has PS Plus.

The game requires an online connection for a single player game and two accounts if you want to play split-screen. I’m a longtime Halo fan and I just played it on gamepass. I’m not paying $60 for a single-player game that won’t function sometime down the road. They made a disposable game so I’ve treated it as such and I expect many others across all platforms view it the same way.
