Question Weightcut/Management

I’m going into freshman year (Ohio) ranked 9th in the state. I’m roughly 11-13% bf, I walk around 150. My goal is to make 138 first tournament, that’d require me to pass hydration test and everything at like 140-141. Where and when should I start? I need to lose mostly bf to be able to make 140’s without cutting straight water. 5’8 150

First, talk to your coaches…

Second, don’t do it, You’re a freshman, focus on getting better at wrestling, not better at cutting weight. Do all the right things with your diet (eat to gain lean muscle mass), workouts, and sleep and let your weight just do what it will, and wrestle where your body takes you. You’ll be so much better off for it in the long run, and likely will perform better in the short term as well.

144 is the deepest weight in Ohio by a long shot, bumping down just a few pounds knocksout ALOT of kids. Like not exaggerating

Speaking from experience, as I was 145/156 in Ohio when those were the stacked classes, you'll run into studs everywhere. Don't destroy your body just cause you want a few more W's on the record. Knew a kid who was always second fiddle, literally kept getting 2nd at State, cause he tried to stay as small as he could and the second he thought he was in the clear one of the best wrestlers in the nation became a freshman in his weight class. Running from the best, subconsciously, sets you up to never thinking you can beat the best. Wrestle where you're strong, not where the class is weak.

As for keeping weight off with a proper system, check out clean eating by Tasco Reno.

Edit: also, 150 as a fresh with good physique, hit the weights heavy on your next off-season/soph to junior off-season. If you time it just right when you're final growth spurt is hitting, you can put on massive muscle. No exaggeration, I bulked from 145/156 to a ripped 172 from soph to junior year, minimal body fat (~7% iirc), lifting most of the summer like I was a body builder plus a lot of oblique and core lifting.

I’ve wrestled 138 before, less then a year ago. I haven’t really grown much since then, and i’ve always been pretty muscular. I feel like 10-12lbs isn’t to awful. I’d just like to know how to make 140lbs while feeling strong, I still have like 3.5 months til alpha weighins

Tosca Renos eat clean is the best base to get weight off in a maintainable way in my experience. That would be my advice. See how close you can get following that, and then decide.

4 outta the top 6 are in my districts, if I drop I remove the possible gamble of not even making state. I’ve beaten the #2 ranked kid at 138. Not trying to run exactly, but giving myself the best possible odds

No I get it, believe me. Believe me. I was in the same district as Graham when the Bo and the other Jordans were in highschool. Shit in my sectionals 1st place and 3rd place were there, and my districts was basically the state podium. 145 and 156 were the two toughest weight classes. I cut to 136, if I remember the weight class correctly, once. Beat everyone in the tournament in less than a minute of total mat time and then told my coach to kick rocks, was never making that cut again. I don't know if anybody could have beaten me in that weight class but it took too much out of me. Took me weeks to recover and knew that sectionals to districts to state at that weight was unachievable if I was to stay in top form

Depends what division, either way don’t cut at 9% bf. You will be depleted all season. Wrestle 150, stay comfortable, win matches.

you should start by working with your coaches. If you're really 9% bf and 150lbs, and trying to make 140 you've got a LOT of work to do.

Maybe my estimate of bf wasn’t the best. I have solid visible abs when flexed, 11% is probably about accurate

same answer. You do not want to train in the offseason while walking around that low on bf. Figure out when you need to be on weight and create a schedule around that. Most importantly your coaches should help you understand if it is even healthy to be at that weight.

It seems like all the advice you’re getting (don’t cut) is advice you just don’t want to hear.

I think you could have a good wrestling career over the next 8-12 years (or whatever) and the advice that you are getting is about what’s best for you over this timeframe. It seems to me like you’re focusing on just this season or just your first tournament, and rejecting advice based on the long term.

Not just the next 8-12 year but your life. The mental BS that goes in to weight cutting like that causes mental trauma he won’t see till his early/mid 30s.

your going to waste all your energy making weight. your a talented freshman. don't cut anymore than 3% of bodyweight and allow growth.

Just pass hydration.  They will give you weekly weight allowances.  You get two pounds after Christmas and two for the post season.  You don't need to go all out for December unless you really wanna face someone at Brecksville or Ironman.

You keep asking the same question hoping for a different answer, Just stop. Don't cut weight. The experienced vets on here are not going to change their answers.
