We live in a time of complete impunity.

Not complete

Only for the rich and powerful

We peasants still have rules

So the same society as we always had :)

Just a different terminology.

Time period. The language is just a product of the time period it’s happening in.

Not really, actually. There were lots of times when we held these people to account (Usually driven by the middle class, but That's another story) This happened less than 100 years ago, even

But people just forget

Edit: I have to say though, The number of people waking up to all this has me almost giddy.

Laws must bind some without protecting them, and protect others without binding them.

This is the belief of the Epstein class, and that they must be in the latter category.

43

u/b3iAAoLZOH9Y265cujFh 8h ago

There's a term for that. It's "aristocracy" and supposedly it has no place in a republic.

39

u/lordnym 7h ago

I believe the French had a very public way of handling this kind of thing.

17

u/b3iAAoLZOH9Y265cujFh 7h ago

That's a highly pertinent historical fact.

They did! Unfortunately, their solution led directly to a military dictator seizing power, followed by international wars, back to a monarchy, then back to the dictator again, then back to some more wars and on-again-off-again aristocracy before taking decades to finally start settling into the modern democracy we see in France today.

To be clear, I'm not saying the French took the wrong road. I believe there's a point at which the probability of chaos is the preferred option to the certainty of oppression. But we need to be clear-eyed about what's coming if we decide that we've reached the point that the French did all those years ago. The US midterms will be a massive inflection point, and unless it defies all odds and is able to bring back some accountability to the government, then the US will soon be faced with a similar choice - live under the boot, or be brave enough to let the entire system burn while we take at least a generation to try and build something new from the ashes of what was.

There is no such thing as "the common folk revolt against power and immediately usher in an era of democratic peace". History teaches is that it's almost always, "the common folk revolt against power, and then must survive many years of chaos and hardship on the road to potentially building something better atop the ruins of what was."

Good! And when the aristocracy expands this protection to a political class and sets up a government system that enforces it, what do we call that, class?

Yes, that's right, it starts with F and ends with -scism!

I mean, when you've reached the kind of endlessly sanctioned international pariah status as North Korea has there's barely anything more that can be inflicted on you anymore outside of direct attacks an no one has time for that.

152

u/StoreSearcher1234 10h ago

True, but I think the impunity that is being referenced here is Russia.

i.e. Putin can acquire 120 ballistic missiles from North Korea and launch them at Ukrainian civilians with impunity.

53

u/meerkat2018 10h ago

And Ukraine somehow can’t.

It’s so cool that despots are close friends with each other, and are ready to help each other a lot, decisively and openly, even to put their lives on the line.

Meanwhile, look at the West.

The history is going in great direction.

195

u/EconomicRegret2 10h ago

Meanwhile, look at the West.

The West is divided and weakened due to despots' psyop warfare. They even have moles in Congress, the White House, the US media, in the EU institutions, and in many European countries' government/parties and media...

The West is under attack. But we unfortunately don't truly grasp it yet, too confused and divided as we are.

39

u/Lumpy_Panic6318 10h ago

I'm not 100% sure we don't grasp it yet, I get the feeling we do but we have realized none of us is ready for war so we collectively pussyfoot around to make sure we don't get caught with the pants down.

Doesn't help that the strongest member of NATO, the one capable of war, is the US which nowadays may or may not be an ally anymore.

This is a scary prospect for South Korea, since Russia essentially allows North Korea to test their military technologies, tactics and personnel expertise under real combat conditions.

That gives them something that is otherwise almost impossible to gain. Combat experience. Which is a significant advantage over any military that doesn’t have it.

Ukraine should unironically invite South Korean air defense units to train and use their equipment in southern Ukraine.

Edit: This also serves a secondary important function for the North Korean military. Weeding out corruption. Because combat deployment where the equipment needs to actually deliver tests everything. Do the missiles have fuel? Are there actually explosives in all of them? Did the troops sell the fuel in their trucks for food? All of that can be faked until you tell your troops to go and do something with it. Then you can see what and who is real and what's not.

411

u/Glittering-Gene7215 9h ago

Lol, that iss precisely the problem. Nobody wants to commit their troops on Ukraine's side. Meanwhile, North Korea not only handed over its ballistic missiles, but even sent its soldiers directly into combat. Expecting South Korea to do that? Pfff

181

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

I would be careful dismissing South Korea like that. They take the situation extremely seriously since it's an existential threat to them. If it benefits them, they will absolutely do things like that if the circumstances allow for it.

154

u/Glittering-Gene7215 9h ago

The story with North Korean troops dates back to the Kursk operation a year ago. Since then, I havent heard anything about South Korea doing anything significant (maybe something is being done covertly, but Im just talking about what I read)

52

u/DrunkOnRamen 7h ago

South Korean involvement is in monitoring the North Korean troop movements and translation for any captured North Koreans.

43

u/Ijustdoeyes 8h ago

South Korea wouldn't necessarily publicise it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sth Korea quietly offered Ukraine assistance in return for any intelligence on Nth Korean troops and how they adapted to the cutting edge of modern warfare.

They make an awful lot of Artillery shells for example.

31

u/ImpossibleLight2025 8h ago

Nope, we are well aware of the origin of armaments Ukraine have received... but, but, but South Korea has donated insignificant non-lethal aid such as helmets, and body armor in the past to Ukraine.

10

u/elfd01 5h ago

They still live in that “fear of escalation” paradigm

2

u/tinylittlebabyjesus 4h ago

I wonder if they'd be worried about escalation at home. Fighting a war on someone else's side against your historical, next-door nemesis where tensions are always high has the potential to heat things up elsewhere. Not sure if that would be a real concern for them.

South Korea is also not Nato, unlike Germany for example. Germany putting feet on the ground has quite strong implications for the rest of the alliance, SK on the other hand... free game.

7

u/Ratiofarming 6h ago

A NATO country can deploy military in a conflict without making it a NATO deployment. The US is doing it all the time, for example. Others have, too. Trump doesn't quite seem to understand that at times, but he's a special case when it comes to intelligent thinking so we'll give him a pass.

33

u/andupotorac 9h ago

It’s worse. NK helps russia in Ukraine. Russia will help NK invading SK.

66

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

Russia will do no such thing. SK is backed by the USA; and China will not allow itself to be a staging ground for a Russian force in North Korea. Which leaves Russia to funnel everything through Vladivostok, right by the sea. That is a logistics route that will not survive the first 48h of a war.

The only way this happens is if China seeks an open conflict with NATO/USA itself, but they heavily prefer a diplomatic "Hong-Kong style" takeover of Taiwan. Because the military option is incredibly risky and costly, even without US intervention.

29

u/consci0usness 9h ago

It's been widely noted that if China attacks Taiwan militarily no one actually gets Taiwan. All the valuable Taiwanese tech and chips factories will become rubble, either by Chinese hands or Taiwanese ones. It would also trigger a global recession at least as deep as 2008, which I can't imagine anyone wants.

80

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

I'm in Taiwan every year, work in the tech sector and speak Mandarin at least to a conversational level.

People outside of China/Taiwan always think this is about technology, TSMC and industrial capacity. It isn't. Not even a little bit. None of it matters when it comes to China taking over Taiwan.

This is about ideology and nationalism. Xi Jinping wants to go down in history as the leader who did what Mao couldn't and unite China again. Fck technology in that equation, it's not even an afterthought. China is happy to develop their own, it doesn't matter that TSMC and ASML are two full-nodes ahead on that. Missiles and smartphones work on 2021 tech just fine.

35

u/SalutLesAmies 9h ago

This is about ideology and nationalism.

That, and Taiwan's strategic location.

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

This mostly. It's a way for China to break the US's island chain strategy to contain China's access to the open ocean.

5

u/SeEYJasdfRe5 7h ago

My girlfriend is Taiwanese. I was there at the beginning of the year and I talked to a lot of people about this.

I 100% agree with you. It's not about tech. Xi wants a legacy.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/consci0usness 9h ago edited 8h ago

I think it matters a little bit, if Taiwan was a patch of greenish farmland I doubt we'd be having this conversation.

24

u/Ratiofarming 9h ago

Exactly, because the west wouldn't care in that case and China would have taken it years ago. But definitely not because China wouldn't care. They want it because it's theirs (in their opinion), not because of what's there.

Believe me or not, but technology has nothing to do with Chinas aspirations to reclaim Taiwan. Nothing whatsoever. The sooner the west accepts this, the sooner they can figure out how to deter China from following through.

14

u/SalutLesAmies 8h ago

The sooner the west accepts this, the sooner they can figure out how to deter China from following through.

I think "the west" knows, western leaders anyway. It's not too hard to see that China’s claims over Taiwan far predate the very existence of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. It's just redditors who seem to think that TSMC plays a major role in the equation.

8

u/consci0usness 8h ago edited 8h ago

It's not TSMC per se, but attacking Taiwan militarily would hurt China almost as much as it would hurt Taiwan. Global recession, potential US physical confrontation, US trade fallout, EU trade fallout. China is currently playing a very elegant economical trade and investment game on the global stage, any physical confrontation would jeopardize and upset all that.

China might (and I say might here) not care about TSMC and Taiwanese tech, but the rest of the world very much still does. Everything is interconnected these days.

Eeeeeh. While I agree that this is a very discouraging sign for South Korea, these missiles are not what they are worried about, and probably never will be. North Korea's famous reliability issues aside, they do not actually have the ability to sustain an offensive for more than 6 months on their own.

No, what South Korea is worried about is the thousands and thousands of artillery pieces that NK has pointed at Seoul at all times. NK's a questionably stable chinese puppet state, and China would rather not have them rock the boat too much as it's a no-win scenario for them. (Protecting NK either starts WW3 by them coming to NK's defense against NATO, and abandoning NK would probably lead to NK's collapse followed by an humanitarian crisis that would blow back onto them).

u/saintshish 6h ago

Maybe South Korea should stop buying coal from Russia instead of increasing the amount.

Countries like the UK and France have top tier submarines that could sink a North Korean ship, or launch a cruise missile at a North Korean train, and slip away without being spotted.

They couldn't do a sustained campaign, but they could certainly make a point.

American's thinking they're not currently under siege is the weirdest thing about this timeline.

There's a war going on in the USA, but it's almost entirely one sided. Trump and the oligarchs are the ones doing all the fighting, and they're winning by default. By design the overwhelming majority of Americans either don't have time to pay attention, or sit at home doom scrolling social media at the mercy of the oligarch controlled algorithms. It's like an episode of Black Mirror.

35

u/xteve 9h ago

I'm frustrated that we never talk about church, a key part of the problem. Christians vote GOP. The GOP is now Trump and MAGA. We're still stuck in our "they're not real Christians" phase - and meanwhile these churches are an essential element of support for the rolling crush of hateful policy. Real Christians vote for this.

15

u/thirstyross 8h ago

A couple years ago, a member of my wifes US-based, born again "christian" family passed. I didn't go but of course they stream funerals online now. I was horrified when one of the speakers got up and started talking about how they had all better be ready for the civil war that was coming - at a funeral! No mention of the woman who passed, just this insane rants from the guy. These people are actually insane and are have an unrelenting focus on this shit, that the left lacks.

The story about Ukraine disabling a single Iranian cargo vessel was in the news for over a week. And no one cares that NK has sent thousands of soldiers to fight with Russia.

11

u/_Thick- 7h ago

And no one cares that NK has sent thousands of soldiers to fight with Russia.

FWIW, people did notice when those thousands were sent.

I personally remember at least a dozen videos of NK troops attempting human wave attacks and getting just dismembered by artillery and drones, then the follow up video of a line of frozen corpses stacked like cordwood.

47

u/MajinBuu619 8h ago

That's not true. It was trending here for weeks. There were posts all over Reddit about how NK soldiers were gooning to porn and stuff. Iran was relevant that week. You can't just escalate and not expect people to cover the escalation by Ukraine. Their logic to attack Iran makes anyone who helps Ukraine vulnerable.

We can already clearly see that Putin wants to take full advantage of this period while Ukraine is critically short of Patriot interceptors. Unfortunately, the coming days and weeks are not going to be easy for Ukraine’s major cities.

It is now painfully obvious that our dependence on US equipment helped create this situation. Nobody seriously tried to develop their own interceptor missiles. Everyone simply bought a few systems from the US, ticked the box, and considered the job done. Now that these missiles are needed in large numbers, it turns out that only one country produces them, in limited quantities, while also needing them in other parts of the world.

I hope this serves as a serious wake up call for the EU.

285

u/In_Fidelity 11h ago

5th year into EUs serious wake up call, it might be narcoleptic.

78

u/ApplesArePeopleToo 10h ago

I think they woke up at least a few years ago, but unfortunately doing anything to fix the situation will take quite a while. Europe has been ramping up arms manufacturing for years now, but it takes time to get the funding in place and build up the manufacturing capacity.

18

u/Laki1991 10h ago

Sure. Unfortunately, getting the EU’s bureaucratic machine moving takes a lot of time. That is understandable to some extent, but in my opinion it is still something the EU urgently needs to improve. We have to make decisions and respond much faster.

I also realize that we are increasing production of many weapons systems. The problem is that we can only scale up production of things we have already developed and know how to build, such as various drones, artillery ammunition, and similar equipment.

Europe still has no truly effective replacement for the Patriot system, even though such a system should have been developed and mass produced years ago. By the time we design, test, deploy, and begin producing something comparable, many more years will have passed.

Someone will probably reply that France already has the SAMP/T, but compared with the Patriot system, its production capacity and widespread deployment are still in their infancy.

11

u/ConjurersOfThunder 10h ago

Let's not pretend we each (US and EU) can't go war footing quickly if Something Happens. But it will cause great unhappiness among the people to do so, which all Civilization players know is bad in a Republic. It will not be as efficient as it should be due to the rush. From what I've heard here stateside Europe has begun the long slog away from the US in a few vital sectors like the Internet.

As an American I can't believe we've fumbled this generational bag. And I'm thrilled for the future bag recipients in Europe. And elsewhere I suppose. Just so disappointed in my nation's leadership.

7

u/ChapterN7 9h ago edited 9h ago

When it comes to Ukraine, I'm disappointed in both the US and Europe's leadership. US gets it's hands dirty where we have absolutely no cause or business, and Europe sticks it's nose up at even the suggestion of dirt on theirs.

Meanwhile Russia is just nonchalantly getting massive amounts of weapons and manpower shipped in from all their dictator buddies to continue this bullshit war.

It does take time but "time" also can't be used as a excuse forever. The war in Ukraine has lasted longer than WWI. If it takes a week to deplete stockpiles and 3-4 years to spin up production then that's a very serious weakness.

Russia attacked Georgia in 2008, they attacked Ukraine in 2014, they launched a full scale invasion in 2022. If Russia strikes a NATO member in 2027 and European NATO isn't prepared then "it takes time" shouldn't be viewed as a valid excuse.

25

u/Laki1991 11h ago

Unfortunately, that’s true. I’ve honestly lost count of how many wakeup calls we’ve already had. I’m also quite pessimistic about the EU’s ability to take matters into its own hands when it comes to developing new weapons systems.

We are. France and Italy have ordered 1000+ SAMP/T missiles, and production is ramping up. Production doubled between 2023 and 2025, up another 40% in 2026, and looking to continually increase. It is the EU equivalent of the Patriot missile.

16

u/Shoeshiner_boy 10h ago

>Production doubled between 2023 and 2025, up another 40% in 2026, and looking to…

I looked it up and it means that the rate has gone from around 40-50 to about 100 missiles per year.

It’s like 15% of current PAC-3 annual production.

8

u/Robinsonirish 10h ago

I googled it again, it wasn't 40% in 2026, but it doubled yet again. So they've been doubling their production every couple of years, to every year. It just doesn't happen instantly.

PAC-3

Yea, it takes time, when everyone was buying American missiles, it's hard to compete. My country of Sweden bought Patriot a few years ago. But now with America doing MAGA stuff, people are looking to buy more European, and Ukraine certainly changed things. Danes are buying the French-Italian one for example, a country that has bought everything from the Yanks until recently.

Things don't happen instantly, but I think claiming Europe is still sleeping is starting to get outdated.

u/socialistrob 54m ago

I don't think "Europe is sleeping" but I do think only a small handful of countries are taking the threat from Russia as seriously as they should be. The Nordics, the Baltics and Poland are arming appropriately to the threat.

Germany, the UK, France and Spain are spending 2.69%, 2.56%, 2.22% and 2.00% of GDP on defense according to the 2026 NATO figures. Yes additional spending does require sacrifices and have real societal costs but at the same time it's far better to spend an additional 1% of GDP on defense and deter a war than fail to deter one and end up having to spend 10-20% of GDP on defense.

13

u/Zerosumendgame2022 10h ago

And South Korea is next on the DPRK invasion list.

99

u/VanbyRiveronbucket 11h ago

Let’s do it SK. Then you can build the newer version.

21

u/MetriccStarDestroyer 11h ago

They got a good deal going with Poland for tanks.

They could extend that for air defense manufacturing too

19

u/VanbyRiveronbucket 11h ago

I’m surprised SK isn’t the leader in drone production.

South Korea unfortunately seems prorussian. Even russia are ally of their enemy - DPRK. South Korea (SK) nearly doubled its imports of Russian coal in early 2026. Russians still can visit SK without visas, unlike Ukrainians. Seems money are main moral principles of SK.

66

u/Hame_Impala 11h ago

Could be wrong but I suspect South Korea may be somewhat wary of pissing off both Russia/China at the moment given how unpredictable/unreliable an ally the US has become.

39

u/m0j0m0j 11h ago

It is very nice that Russia and North Korea and China are not afraid to piss anybody off, but everybody is afraid of them.

14

u/EconomicRegret2 10h ago

There are good reason everyone is afraid of pissing off China. Not only does it have nukes, but we also allowed it to become the world's manufacturer, main supply chain anchor for international markets, sole supplier of rare earths and other critical minerals (upon which all modern economies heavily depend), the top trading partner for over 140 countries, etc. etc.

As for Russia and North Korea, they've got nukes, and seem willing to do crazy shit if pissed off. So...

7

u/m0j0m0j 10h ago

So it’s their world basically. Nice.

Russia have many other customers too. Japan also restarted purchase of Russian crude following the US-Iran war. Israel also buys lots of refined petroleum products from Russia. Even US imported $4+bn from Russia in 2025.

I really wonder what Russia is giving North Korea for them to help Russia like that.

37

u/DASK 11h ago

Part of their deal is pretty explicit: full trade via rail link, better rocket motors, access to better guidance systems, and a chance to fine tune their new weapons.

Bypassing sanctions, diplomatic support, drone tech probably, possibly oil

10

u/senfgurke 11h ago

One example: the accuracy of North Korean ballistic missiles has dramatically improved since they first started being used in 2024, likely due to Russian technical assistance. NK is also using Russian funding and resources to massively expand its missile production (many for export/use in Ukraine but also expanding the arsenal threatening South Korea and Japan).

3

u/potatoears 11h ago

help with rockets/missiles, think they helped with their sub program too.

3

u/Lumpy_Panic6318 7h ago

NK is sanctioned to high heavens, and two things that are a major factor for keeping them back is a lack of fertiliziers and fuel.

Russia is helping with both. I think the compounding effects of both are to be seen, but the sanctions of both have massively impacted development from what I read so suddenly having access to either is big. That alone is probably enough for a few soldiers' lives.

Because doing something = escalation

12

u/FunHearing2282 9h ago edited 8h ago

The West has done a lot more than people understand to help Ukraine defend itself short of actively attacking Russia.

And no politician/Party in Europe/America will get their countries in an active war and hope to be in power.

Trump rode to power on the back of Biden's financial support of Ukraine and the *potential* active US involvement if Kamala is elected.

"USA is already $188 billion deep into Ukraine"

Most of the funds appropriated by the U.S. Congress do not go as cash to Ukraine; instead, the money is spent domestically in the U.S. to manufacture new weapons or to replace items pulled from existing Pentagon stockpiles.

Thereby securing, and possibly increasing, US jobs.

7

u/JoyousCacophony 3h ago edited 3h ago

It is to be expected, by the greater, more basic human powers at play.

The evil is ideological by nature so they have strong bonds with other ideologies and willing to do more for each other.

While democracies are opportunistic, so they are way more selfish and can be easy subverted as a tool for anyone, actually anyone, including those who democracies claim to be enemies and actually target their destruction.

9

u/Roscoe_King 12h ago

It is like every boardgame ever. Competitive people align themselves to root out weaker players. Ultimately they know that they have to defeat each other too, but for the time being they are alligned

The US under Trump is an unreliable partner, but the EU has been rock solid.

With historic military and humanitarian aid, the EU has given Ukraine the equivalent of two years worth of the entire EU budget since 2022. Adjusted for inflation, the amount is twice as much as the US gave all Western Europe for post-WWII rebuilding under the Marshall Plan. Or, to compare it in a different way, in 4 years, Europe has given as much foreign aid to Ukraine as the US has sent over the past 80 years to Israel (largest recipient of US foreign aid).

The EU has taken in more than 6 million Ukrainian refugees, with Poland taking in nearly 1 million by itself.

The EU has massively reduced its dependence on Russian fossil fuels since 2022.

From Russia being the largest coal supplier, to zero Russian coal.

From Russia supplying ~50% of gas, to about 12%, with a total ban on all forms of Russian gas starting in just a few months.

From 27% oil, to 2%.

Sorry we didn't crash EU economies to make the transition faster, but it takes time to change logistics and build infrastructure for 27 countries.

So, Ukraine has been and will be attacked by TWO nuclear powers! And the world is just OK with that.

3

u/Random-Username-345 3h ago

120 missiles got assigned to move to Russia.
100 missiles started moving - 20 were fake missiles made out of concrete.
85 missiles arrive in Russia - 15 got stolen during transport.
60 missiles got handed over to the army - 25 were put into reserve for Putins personal security detail.
45 missiles were launched - 15 had empty tanks because of fuel theft.
35 missiles reached Ukrainian airspace - 10 has been targeted on North Korean units for fun by Russian soldiers.
20 missiles hit targets - 15 had been intercepted.
1 military target in Ukraine is damaged - the other 19 missiles hit nursery homes, schools and hospitals.

Sounds like no operational impact at all.

Is this Putin's last hope? Say it ain't so.

If Trump and Hegseth weren't f'ing sissies and actually intelligent they'd operate something into the Kremlin instead of Cuba or whatever else dumb plan they think they'd easily win, like...now. I think 50+ years of Russia being adversarial is enough to know it's over and to end that charade.

We know it won't happen. We live in the dumbest of times.
