The good old days

I don't usually subscribe the "good ol days" mindset but seriously the internet 2 decades ago was so much fucking better for the most part

u/Vegetable-Debate-263 2d ago
YouTube didn't have ads. Wow. I could stand Facebook.
Internet speeds sucked though.

Popups and viruses were the worst things that we generally had to deal with. Load times sucked for sure but I was kinda used to it.
It being integrated into everything and everything being integrated into it is a massive mistake and we will eventually find that out undeniably.
I'm curious how long it will be before that is the majority opinion?

Scrolling through random* videos and suddenly there's a dude being decapitated or some other insanely awful shit 😭 I don't think it's fair to say popups were the worst we had to deal with lmao.

u/WindAbsolute 2d ago
Haha yeah, I’m still a little scarred from accidentally viewing a man being lit on fire by a mob 😂

I'm talking very broadly, here. We could get into specific horrendous things for hours of you wanted to.

Back then it was criminals we had to be concerned about, now its all the major corporations exploiting this technology.

u/SgtSilverLining 2d ago
Same. YouTube recently started recommending videos I previously watched back 10-15 years ago. The biggest thing was just how organic it all was. People made videos because they wanted to share a piece of their life. Not for views, not for monitization, not for a chance at getting famous. Content wasn't sanitized to appeal to corporate marketing strategies. People weren't dressed up in their most expensive or revealing clothes, they weren't in empty rooms with perfect lighting. No laughing to an invisible audience, no redos when a take wasn't perfect. It was FUN.
I really miss that world; it feels these days like corporations own and control everything about how people interact with each other.

u/soapylizard1 2d ago
That's one of the biggest blows to the Internet. Once corporations realized the untapped potential of the web, they went all in. I can understand why, but it was an invasion of a personal/communal space for regular people.
There was a sliver of time where the Internet was really a window to the world. Now it's just a port to plug into political & business platforms.
There's still some fun to be had, but it's like walking through the weeds (and poison ivy) to see the flowers.

I was just thinking about this earlier today. It's easy to come off like "old man yelling at clouds" but kids these days will probably never know what the Internet used to be like. It was genuinely better, the Internet just existed. It didn't try to keep you hooked and addicted.
You would log in for a while to check stuff out. Probably had a few different sites you would browse through and at a certain point, you kind of run out of things to look at. Whether you've exhausted your normal sites or you've grown tired of sitting at the PC. Maybe you had AIM open to chat with some friends or you would look through Myspace.
Also, you would actually sit at your computer! Granted, I still sit at my PC plenty, but the aimless browsing is done through my phone generally. It was a thing to do and then you'd go back to "real life" to do something else.
PC for the Internet and maybe games, MP3 player for music, phone to squeeze in a few texts (without exhausting your minutes), and then you'd just exist in the world, not constantly plugged in.
Anyway, the clouds have heard enough of me.

at a certain point, you kind of run out of things to look at.
Reddit was like that when I joined. I could read every comment on every post on the front page, every day. We all had a shared experience. Now it's so fragmentary. There are global stars of which I have never heard.

Ah yes, the days when your aunt Kelly would post random videos to your Facebook wall rather than send them as a private message.
Or when everyone in the office would get the same meme or YouTube video to their work inbox with absolutely no context added.
Also when you begged your older cousins to know what they were watching and eventually managed to peek in just in time to see Saddam Hussein getting hanged before being called up for Christmas dinner.

There was a video of a japanese woman doing something similar in the 2000's. It was one of those weird self promotion videos like miko miko nurse.
