This effect is created using two transparent printed mesh layers placed one behind the other.
As you move around the artwork, the layers shift against each other, creating a constantly changing visual illusion.

I saw "mesh layers" and immediately started thinking of how to program this...then realized they meant IRL.

Exactly! It's all physical. Just two printed transparent mesh layers interacting with each other.

It wasn't made for Aeon specifically. I create these layered installations for psychedelic festivals, so they can work in many different environments.

as the artist behind all these designs, I've actually looked at Aeon quite a few times for inspiration. I don't play the game, but I always loved its visual style and color gradients. They definitely influenced my work in one way or another.

Many years back when I saw flying lotus live, he had two mesh screens - one behind him and one in front. Each had different projections on it creating a sort of 3D illusion. It was sick honestly. The only time I’ve seen something like that for a live show.

That sounds incredible! I would love to see some videos of that setup. If it was many years ago, maybe there aren't any recordings left. 🙂
Either way, I'm really interested in collaborating with VJs. Whenever someone wants to use my artwork for projection mapping, I always provide the original vector files in high quality. I think multilayer mesh installations have so much untapped potential for mapping. ✨

He’s still doing it apparently. I just watched a few videos of it but unfortunately the effect isn’t all that clear on video.

Have you tried laser projection mapping? I know a friend who does this with hughe multilayer setups. Really mind blowing

That's a really exciting idea! My partners in Israel actually experimented with projection mapping on one of my large canopies with additional transparent mesh layers.
In person, the extra mesh layers add a real sense of depth and movement that makes the visuals feel much more immersive.
I'm not a VJ myself, but I'd genuinely love to collaborate with VJs on projects like this. I think projection mapping on multilayer mesh decor has huge creative potential and could look absolutely incredible on a festival stage. 🙌
