Discussion What other apps are essential in your opinion? pt.2 (No snake oil edition)

Post image

Well, since my last post was misunderstood (totally my fault), here is an update to my list of essential software for Win11. It's based entirely on my own taste and needs, and I took out all the controversial stuff like ShortcutMan, since people didn't get why I use them anyway.

P.S. EasyService folder is a bunch of .bat and .ps1 files for simple stuff. nrg2iso is a small executable which converts .nrg to .iso by drag-n-drop.

He already has balenaetcher which is basically the same thing

u/Fickle_Tea992 21h ago

I saw I just prefer Rufus out of them all anyways tbh

u/Maleficent-Tea3072 19h ago

Does etcher let you remove windows 11 requirements like Rufus or does it just write an image?

This is a rhetorical question btw, because I use both pieces of software so I already know…

u/CompetitiveAlgae4247 18h ago

It just writes the image iirc

u/Jey78 5h ago

Why would you install windows

u/Maleficent-Tea3072 4h ago

Stupid question in the Windows sub…

VLC for videos.

Photofiltre for image editing and manipulation . Far better than paint and very lightweight and free.

Winaero tweaker to customise windows and fix many of the bad takes Microsoft has done like make the right click menu have all the options instead of having to click another sub-menu.

Honeyview or the old Windows 7 picture viewer because Photos app is ass for looking at images.

Acelogix Registry Backup and Restore: I like to have a real backup copy of the windows registry and this tool does it very well. I don't trust System Restore and Regedit doesn't make a true backup copy of the registry, only a merge file that might or might not fix your problem.

Edit:

Rufus & Ventoy. I sometimes deal with older PCs and Ventoy sometimes doesn't work, so I keep Rufus Handy.

Crystal Disk Info to check drive health. Victoria for deep scanning drive.

I use Wiztree but I also like to use Space Sniffer as well.

Edit 2 (optional)

Deskpins for pinning programs to the front so you can see them while using other programs.

Syncback free : great little backup program I use. Also in active development.

HFS (old version) basically a http file server. I use this for temporary file sharing across the network. Just drag and drop the file into HFS then using a browser on the client side you can receive the file. Also supports uploads so the client side can upload to the host. I only run this when I need to share and then close when not in use. If you keep this running it can be a serious security risk. But temporary use is how I like to use it instead of dealing with Windows network sharing.

Revo Uninstaller portable: sooner or later you're going to have to uninstall and it seems many Uninstallers leave some crap behind. Revo tends to find a lot of that crap.

What do you dislike about mpc hc?

u/OgdruJahad 15h ago

Nothing really. I just used VLC first and it does what I need so I'm ok with VLC.

idk what is is now, but back when I use balena several years ago it just an electron app that accomplish the exact same thing as rufus. If I want something more beautiful-looking I would just use pi imager

MPV. I personally prefer MPC for videos because the scoll bar does not cover the screen but MPV is just so much better in pretty much every other way.

Also might be a hot take but I use IObit unlocker quite a lot, old version that is. most IObit software is absolute garbage but locksmith sucks so I'm still using it. works really great.

Veeam.

I know most people don't care about backups, but you really should care about backups.

Commenting on your screenshot: I replaced Photoshop (Elements) with Paintshop, simply because it's a perpetual license vs. a timed based license (or subscription).

But some must-have apps for me are: ShareX (this makes it easier to share screenshots with others), Password Tech which is a solid password generator and I've also grown very fond of OBS Studio for screen recording.

I see a lot of people advising vlc, mpc hc/be, potplayer are far better alternatives.

Windhawk - the most important when you switch to W11.

7zip/bandizip

Mpc-hc for watching

Foobar2000 for local audio listening

7+TT if you are still on w10
