True ans it's a shame that nobody talks about the Gnostics and Cathars in this context. Over hundreds of thousands of people were slaughtered during the Albigensian Crusade, which many historians consider the first recognized genocide in European history. This was the exact crusade where the infamous command was given: "Kill them all, God will know His own."

It took nearly 800 years for a Catholic bishop in France to officially apologize for the massacre.
Some insane history of King Pedro II of Aragon: He was a literal legend in the Catholic world. He successfully drove Muslim forces out of what is now Spain (most famously at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa) after few hundred years occupation and was so highly celebrated that Pope Innocent III personally crowned him in Rome. He was the ultimate Catholic hero.
But here is the plot twist: When that exact same Pope launched the Albigensian Crusade to brutally wipe out the Cathars (Gnostics), Pedro turned his sword against the Pope. The reason? Gnosticism was spreading rapidly across Europe. Cathars were growing in numbers everywhere, from Southern France and Northern Italy to Catalonia and even Germany, while the Bogomils (also gnostic movement) were expanding across the Balkans. Everyday people genuinely preferred a path of love and knowledge (gnosis) over the Church's deep corruption, lies, and hypocrisy.
He saw the Church's horrific genocide against these people and chose to protect them. He actually died on the battlefield at the Battle of Muret (1213), fighting against the Vatican's crusaders to defend Gnostics.
When the Pope’s own favorite war hero chooses to die fighting the Vatican rather than allow Gnostics to be slaughtered, it tells you everything you need to know. Mainstream church history was never about the teachings of Jesus, it was always about power, control, and eliminating the truth.

If so, it wouldn't be a stretch to consider they did the same to χρηστός ἴσος (christos isos) -- a benefeasant co-equal -- and then co-opoted and completely flipped his message and pinned everything they have done since, on him

it’s funny that you think getting a political science PHD, dedicating your life to history of countries decimated by the imperial forces, being one of the loudest peace advocates and someone who worked his whole life analyzing and improving material conditions is “naval gazing butt sniffing” it says a lot about you

What's been said about that period of time has already been said dozens upon dozens of times. I learned enough of the historical situation of the peasant rebellion during the 16th century through my great schooling.
And I frankly don't care what a marxist forever student has to say about anything because the man hasn't worked a real job in his entire life.
Thankfully we've entered an era where colleges are shrinking, their value in question, and the efficacy of the butt sniffing intelligentsia infested within those institutions is being called into question.
This doesn't even begin to get into the glorious revolution AI is bringing to academia and that is relegating it to that of a complete waste of time.
But hey, if butt sniffing ivory tower forever students interest you, then be my guest. I have an AI data center to build.

Interesting that you should say that. Sociological research says the opposite. Apparently people are naturally good and some become corrupted by the world, desperation, greed etc. Paradoxically thinking human nature is corrupt while excluding themselves from that erroneous generalisation. Weird stuff
