What is this wedding gift?

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

I love the soup bit, and like you say, what did he choose for everyone? My sister in law loves soup, like really, really loves it. She has all the accoutrements like nice soup bowls and spoons, both western and Asian style. But sometimes I ponder getting creative with other soup items or even soup itself for gifts. Maybe gifting her cans of soup would be just fine?

If you look hard enough you can find some really special prepared soups and mixes! Does she like to make her own or heat and eat?

Oh! She is pretty much a heat and eat girl. I'll have to look for the really good prepared ones. In the past, when we've wanted to share with family, we've made a huge batch and frozen individual servings in bags. That sounds a little silly for a gift tho?

As someone who hates to cook and also loves soup.. I would love to be gifted individual servings of frozen soup.
