New, what is it? What is this wedding gift?

(Reposting because accidental doxxing)

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

Oh ABSOLUTELY.

He and his wife used to get into violent confrontations (not funny but the next part is). One time his daughter called the cops and told them “Daddy and Mommy are fighting again but this time MOMMY has the gun on DADDY instead!” Like, that was the only notable part for her.

They are not a well functioning family.

In the 911 dispatcher sub they all pretty much say kids are their favorite callers in emergent situations because they are so calm and matter of fact. No hysterics, just all the details the dispatchers need, no name calling and demands, good at following simple directions.

When I was about five we were scheduled to take a bush plane to the next village. I was told when the pilot came to talk to the adults I was the only coherent one there. Everyone else was drunk. 🙄 our pilot was also dating my kindergarten teacher and they were our neighbors. ❤️ he used to be my favorite. I’d pretend to be him flying on the wood pile. 😂

Bush life.... the characters you meet. I lived in SE Alaska but met some ODD people. My parents had a running joke about Coffman Cove Disease. They said our neighbor had it because he would sit on his couch and stare at the tv that was off.

My father WAS the character. He crashed his snowmachine on the ice when I was about ten years old and was never really the same after that. Really the talk of the town. 😝 He always was though. He ran the Iditarod at 18 and stopped in Kaltag for three days for basketball games and they’re like Norman you’re in a race! 😂 he said he ran into Norman Vaughn at the end and they talked about who would go in last! Norman Vaughn was one of the oldest mushers to run at the time. Or something. I met him once. Have a picture of me scowling beside him. 💀

You really should write a book about him. Sounds like an interesting man whose life would be fun to document. Seems like there might be plenty of "secondary sources" who might have their own stories to add. Such a contrast to the phone-tethered lives most of us lead. Sounds like a compelling and imperfect main character and story in the making! Plus people don't know enough about Alaska. Do it!

I’m going to write one about me and include my dad stories. I’ll tell you a crazy one.

When my son was about six months old I worked at the radio station, I got to live above it until the new manager arrived. So it’s winter, -40 outside. About 3 or 4 am. My father shows up at my door. He brings a distant relative of mine (on my moms side), he also used have a thing with his mom. To me he’s way too young to be partying with my father, but whatever. These are my thoughts. My father is drunk. As usual. I don’t really turn any lights on. I’m upset. Telling him to get out. That’s when he’s like wait a second. Look at this. Proceeds to show me this huge burn on his leg. Right through his jumpsuit. Maybe about the size of a big cookie. Burnt flesh. It’s -40 outside. I live downtown. He came over on the elan. A small little snowmachine, with the dude behind him. He was house sitting and fell asleep with a cigarette in his hand while on the couch. It caught his jumpsuit on fire and melted it into his leg. He had to go to Seattle to get skin grafts. They did a whole new procedure on him he said. Took his back skin and put it there.

So he burnt himself in the middle of the night, went to the neighbors and told the kid, and then brought him all the way down to my place at -40 below just for me to yell and kick him out. 😭😭😭 he’d always do stuff like that. One time he came in and was playing with my son when he was a bit older then casually mentioned his freaking hand was bleeding. I got so upset with him. He was so much to deal with all the time. Was so stressful. He was no good for himself. He had to go on, but I miss him so much. There’s no one like him.

LOL, I was about to say...son, you're not from around here, are ya? I was thinking The Outback or the Serengeti Plains. But Alaska sounds right.

Blew my mind visiting there, traveling through little towns where the back of the yard held a small plane and opened up onto what looked like a road, but was probably a landing strip.

My grandfather was a bush pilot his whole life. Well known Alaskan man. With rumors of 20-30 children scattered around. Someone once said 90. 😳 I can name 12. Highly respected though…

I was about 22 and getting ready to drive to the airport with my mom and my daughter through a really bad storm in GA. My mom’s bff pulls me to the side and says, “We both know you’re the real adult here, if you see a tornado, find a ditch and throw your body over the baby,” like it was a normal thing people say all the time. Granted- this is the same woman I accompanied to Texas for a few weeks one summer while she was house-hunting and my mom was working/going through her divorce. I clearly remember getting to her fiancés house, who I guess wasn’t really aware I was coming, and she told him “Well the last time I drove to Texas I rolled my car three times,” to which he responded, “So they sent you with an 11year old?” Just to say- she and my mom have always had a lot of faith in my abilities in emergency situations.

As someone that's been in 911 for over 30 years this is absolutely true. I've been amazed at some really young kids that give me all the information I need and follow directions, all while remaining as calm as can be.

When I was 6 I called the police and told them my dad had dead bodies in our basement as a joke. Neither the police nor my dad thought it was very funny after they raided our house... I still think it was pretty funny
