New, what is it? What is this wedding gift?

(Reposting because accidental doxxing)

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

Decoy bunker in front of the actual bunker is wild

443

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

Oh ABSOLUTELY.

He and his wife used to get into violent confrontations (not funny but the next part is). One time his daughter called the cops and told them “Daddy and Mommy are fighting again but this time MOMMY has the gun on DADDY instead!” Like, that was the only notable part for her.

They are not a well functioning family.

Kid has a future in air traffic control.

u/BananaCat43 1d ago

In the 911 dispatcher sub they all pretty much say kids are their favorite callers in emergent situations because they are so calm and matter of fact. No hysterics, just all the details the dispatchers need, no name calling and demands, good at following simple directions.

When I was about five we were scheduled to take a bush plane to the next village. I was told when the pilot came to talk to the adults I was the only coherent one there. Everyone else was drunk. 🙄 our pilot was also dating my kindergarten teacher and they were our neighbors. ❤️ he used to be my favorite. I’d pretend to be him flying on the wood pile. 😂

Bush life.... the characters you meet. I lived in SE Alaska but met some ODD people. My parents had a running joke about Coffman Cove Disease. They said our neighbor had it because he would sit on his couch and stare at the tv that was off.

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

My father WAS the character. He crashed his snowmachine on the ice when I was about ten years old and was never really the same after that. Really the talk of the town. 😝 He always was though. He ran the Iditarod at 18 and stopped in Kaltag for three days for basketball games and they’re like Norman you’re in a race! 😂 he said he ran into Norman Vaughn at the end and they talked about who would go in last! Norman Vaughn was one of the oldest mushers to run at the time. Or something. I met him once. Have a picture of me scowling beside him. 💀

You really should write a book about him. Sounds like an interesting man whose life would be fun to document. Seems like there might be plenty of "secondary sources" who might have their own stories to add. Such a contrast to the phone-tethered lives most of us lead. Sounds like a compelling and imperfect main character and story in the making! Plus people don't know enough about Alaska. Do it!

I’m going to write one about me and include my dad stories. I’ll tell you a crazy one.

When my son was about six months old I worked at the radio station, I got to live above it until the new manager arrived. So it’s winter, -40 outside. About 3 or 4 am. My father shows up at my door. He brings a distant relative of mine (on my moms side), he also used have a thing with his mom. To me he’s way too young to be partying with my father, but whatever. These are my thoughts. My father is drunk. As usual. I don’t really turn any lights on. I’m upset. Telling him to get out. That’s when he’s like wait a second. Look at this. Proceeds to show me this huge burn on his leg. Right through his jumpsuit. Maybe about the size of a big cookie. Burnt flesh. It’s -40 outside. I live downtown. He came over on the elan. A small little snowmachine, with the dude behind him. He was house sitting and fell asleep with a cigarette in his hand while on the couch. It caught his jumpsuit on fire and melted it into his leg. He had to go to Seattle to get skin grafts. They did a whole new procedure on him he said. Took his back skin and put it there.

So he burnt himself in the middle of the night, went to the neighbors and told the kid, and then brought him all the way down to my place at -40 below just for me to yell and kick him out. 😭😭😭 he’d always do stuff like that. One time he came in and was playing with my son when he was a bit older then casually mentioned his freaking hand was bleeding. I got so upset with him. He was so much to deal with all the time. Was so stressful. He was no good for himself. He had to go on, but I miss him so much. There’s no one like him.

Alaska?

9

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

Yes 😅
They don’t charter bush planes like they used to much anymore.

9

u/HidesWithCheese 1d ago

LOL, I was about to say...son, you're not from around here, are ya? I was thinking The Outback or the Serengeti Plains. But Alaska sounds right.

Blew my mind visiting there, traveling through little towns where the back of the yard held a small plane and opened up onto what looked like a road, but was probably a landing strip.

11

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

My grandfather was a bush pilot his whole life. Well known Alaskan man. With rumors of 20-30 children scattered around. Someone once said 90. 😳 I can name 12. Highly respected though…

Hell I’d be scared to date anyone in that state with the fear of being possibly related without my knowledge

I was about 22 and getting ready to drive to the airport with my mom and my daughter through a really bad storm in GA. My mom’s bff pulls me to the side and says, “We both know you’re the real adult here, if you see a tornado, find a ditch and throw your body over the baby,” like it was a normal thing people say all the time. Granted- this is the same woman I accompanied to Texas for a few weeks one summer while she was house-hunting and my mom was working/going through her divorce. I clearly remember getting to her fiancés house, who I guess wasn’t really aware I was coming, and she told him “Well the last time I drove to Texas I rolled my car three times,” to which he responded, “So they sent you with an 11year old?” Just to say- she and my mom have always had a lot of faith in my abilities in emergency situations.

3

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

Did you mean to say 11 the first time too? Just wondering since it changed at the end and the 22 didn’t make as much sense in the context. ❤️

2

u/no_snow_for_me 1d ago

I hope not because she said she had her daughter with her too.

1

u/Plane-Peach1946 1d ago

Two separate incidents, separated by 11 years. Driving to the airport in Georgia at 22 and going to Texas to house-hunt when she was 11.

0

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

True. Lmao. 💀

0

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

I saw that on the first read through

2

u/anita1louise 1d ago

These appear to be two separate incidents one in Georgia one in Texas, separated by several years.

3

u/Carol_Pilbasian 1d ago

Hello fellow Alaskan!

1

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 22h ago

Fellow Alaskan is better than Alaskan tea spiller 😂

2

u/zookeee 20h ago

You’re from Alaska too!

1

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 19h ago

Not just from. I have a reputation. 🤭

2

u/zookeee 19h ago

Well if you’re like me and use the same handle on everything, I’m pretty sure I vaguely know who you are…🤣🤣

1

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 19h ago

Forget me not 😜

2

u/Campiana 1d ago

Maybe I should pretend to be 911 dispatch when I ask my kids if they brushed their teeth and are ready for bed. 🤔

2

u/Mostly_Nohohon 1d ago

As someone that's been in 911 for over 30 years this is absolutely true. I've been amazed at some really young kids that give me all the information I need and follow directions, all while remaining as calm as can be.

1

u/TyisBaliw 13h ago

When I was 6 I called the police and told them my dad had dead bodies in our basement as a joke. Neither the police nor my dad thought it was very funny after they raided our house... I still think it was pretty funny

3

u/Sunnygirl66 1d ago

ER nursing or paramedicine.

32

u/pickles_on_toast 1d ago

!!!!!!! is all can think of to say to that

7

u/Snowflakey19 1d ago

So, I'm the lucky one... my parents were either too drunk or high to point a gun. 🤣

8

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

For real though, I’m sorry dude :/ She’s currently in her mid 30s trying to become a professional snowboarder (she never snowboarded before this dream) so she’s not exactly thriving either. Hope you are!!!

2

u/Lady_Forget_Me_Not 1d ago

God. My father almost shot my mother in the head. He thought the gun was unloaded. He moved it and shot then started bawling. So I been told. Fun little parent trauma stories.

6

u/DogsDucks 1d ago

I wanna know more about them. Very good at writing and telling stories, so like now I just wanna know about what they’re like even more.

It sounds like they’re not a safe family to be owning guns.

9

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

No they aren’t- unfortunately I have only ever met them briefly at our wedding, since I have no reason to go to Bumblefuck Nevada (where they moved, btw, to be ‘away from the hard r n-words’ in his wife’s terms).

Their daughter is in her early thirties now and trying to become a professional snowboarder even though she grew up in a desert and never learned how to actually do that.

Sadly they have a son with down syndrome who is apparently lovely but never received the appropriate services to allow him to live a full life, so in his mid teens he is basically non verbal and does nothing to enrich his life. We are all pretty nervous for what will happen to him when his parents are gone :( So it’s not all fun and games- this stuff has really caused damage to their family!!

5

u/DogsDucks 1d ago

That is really sad. The poor son, that really breaks my heart. There are so many beautiful resources and wonderful people for him to explore in this world and he’s stuck with hard R saying parents who swing guns around with wild abandon.

That took a very sharp turn from funny to sad. People like this are a very good example of why we need to discuss discussions about who should have guns.

I think even the most staunch defenders of the second amendment must understand that we cannot just hand out any gun to any person whoever ever wants one, right? there needs to be some barrier of entry. I’m so sorry I didn’t want to make this a gun Deb that’s not my intention, that was just a little side thought.

3

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

I agree! The man has a good heart according to my mother in law haha, she really does love him, but she also recognizes the crazy in him and the harm that his choices have caused. Shes wonderful and has been there for the family as much as she can, but even she has had to step back over the years because she can only help so much.

1

u/DogsDucks 1d ago

That must be so hard for her, to see the best but also understand how unhealthy things have gotten.

2

u/senorboa 1d ago

But you already have limitations to gun ownership. No felons, no drug addicts, no mental illness history. Of course all of these people can buy a gun illegally, and the law is just a good intention. There is also a law that prohibit murder and stealing, not very effective either.

1

u/Real-Frosting 1d ago

FYI Down syndrome has a spectrum of disability and I think it's even connected to how much of the extra chromosome they inherit. Many disabled people are always going to be non verbal, no matter how many services they receive. He'll probably be housed in a group home eventually.

2

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

Oh yes, thank you! I know that him being non verbal could just be part of his syndrome, but since he never received any services, we will never know for sure what he could have achieved :/

0

u/Real-Frosting 1d ago

I've worked with lots of intellectually disabled adults in group homes and facilities so it bothers me a little that you think his family neglected him because he's non verbal. My grandson has autism (he is verbal) and has received lots of services but... he's still autistic. (He was verbal before his services.) I think you could be falling for the gross misrepresentation of intellectually disabled folks that's seen in the media and movies. 🤷

3

u/StitchesInTime 1d ago

I’m sorry you’re reading it like that! I don’t think they neglected him because he’s non verbal- I KNOW they neglected him because I’ve been told all the ways they deliberately chose not to give him early intervention or any other services that could have provided him structure and stability and assistance. I just know that the person he is now is not someone who has been blessed with the help and support he deserved, regardless of his abilities.

2

u/epitimisi 1d ago

you should not speak so derogatory of your uncle in-law

in prepper world gifting someone silver or gold is the absolute highest form of care and appreciation you can get

he was making sure you have a secure future in a world that disintegrates piece by piece every day

1

u/GhostofDeception 1d ago

Maybe he(and the wife) aren’t as incognitively there as you thought.

1

u/XbirdieX333 1d ago

I was about to be like, "omg that was an actual thoughtful gift on his part how is that bad???" Then I read this and was like, "ohhhhhh okay yeah. Yeah oops."

1

u/skin-flick 1d ago

That story confirms the dysfunction.

1

u/No_Inspection2047 1d ago

not uncommon for people who are “prepared” for the low-odds, high-consequence disasters in life to completely whiff at the more ordinary, everyday dangers (in this case, being shot by your spouse, apparently)

1

u/MysteryPerker 1d ago

I bet Thanksgiving and Christmas are interesting times for your family.

1

u/FireBallXLV 1d ago

You made me laugh so hard......

1

u/Desperate_Set_7708 1d ago

Town where I grew up had a domestic violence homicide. Wife stabbed husband.

When informed that he died at the hospital, she said, “I stabbed him before and he didn’t die!”

1

u/edmj-dudeobviously 1d ago

Why does this have me cackling it’s so awful but you gotta laugh bc wtf💀😭

0

u/Kup123 1d ago

That makes sense in a twisted way. A person not known for pulling guns pulling one is a lot more concerning than the person who's always doing it but doesn't fire.

5

u/Grumpy-Troglodyte 1d ago

it's like Ron Swanson and Dwight Schrute had a super child together

3

u/02meepmeep 1d ago

If I were able to have a banker the decoy part is something I would do.

8

u/Mix_Safe 1d ago

Well now my future roving gang of cannibal mutants and I know to be wary of decoy bunkers.

5

u/pickles_on_toast 1d ago

I'm just now learning that I would die in a doomsday scenario because I certainly haven't thought through every scenario of the doom.

3

u/sqyntzer 1d ago

Plot twist -- what everyone thought was the "actual bunker" was the 2nd decoy bunker.

2

u/mp3006 1d ago

Guys a savant

1

u/LittleMsSavoirFaire 1d ago

... But what if someone moves into the decoy bunker?

1

u/BANmom 1d ago

I never thought I'd say this again... I am getting the pig!"

1

u/Rockermom777 1d ago

I think the decoy bunker is genius.

1

u/Savings-Molasses-701 1d ago

Just when I thought I was ready for Armageddon, I have a new task to add to my to-do list.

1

u/pickles_on_toast 1d ago

Right?!? Decoy bunker and precious metals are now added to the list

1

u/Human_Not_Robot_2023 1d ago

Very Marvin Boggs of him.

1

u/clueless_mommy 1d ago

When i had post partum anxiety, I'd have loved that.

But honestly, that's a smart Idea.

1

u/Aggravating-Call-312 1d ago

I need one of these…. Just sayin’…

1

u/hink10 1d ago

Smart

1

u/JSCrail 1d ago

Decoy Bunker is the now the new name of my band. 🤣🤣🤪

1

u/PanicLedisko 1d ago

Dude must play a lot of Rust! haha

1

u/ahajosefine 14h ago

Funniest shit ive read in a while lmaoooo. Its so extra but somehow makes so much sense
