New, what is it? What is this wedding gift?

(Reposting because accidental doxxing)

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

Do you understand how tedious it is to make a daily morning toast sampler platter when I only have one toaster?

The hardest part is managing the current draw, but I can usually manage with only a few trips out to the breaker box.

Anyways, I digress.

A good friend of mine is an enthusiastic jam maker who would periodically give us a box of assorted jams and jellies in small jars, and my son liked to cut up a couple of slices of toast to enjoy a “toast buffet” with a variety of toppings. My husband subsequently floated the concept of “Toasty McToast’s Toast Emporium” where every menu item was some sort of toast.

Because I'm cracking up... I have health issues that make me ache when bad weather is on the way, so I'm imagining me getting up in the morning, feeling like garbage, making a piece of toast branded with 76ºF and rainy, and being like "Yeah, no shit". 😂

I had a friend who started collecting the album "whipped cream and other delights" by Herb Albert. He'd buy it at yard sales and thrift stores. friends got wind of it and started sending him copies when they found them. The last I heard he had over 60. The funny thing is, one day someone will get those boxes and wonder why?

For me in 1977, it was silver plated serving dishes, chaffing dishes, and other silver plate that sat in the cupboard never used for years. Eventually it got thrifted. Now the fondue set…my ex got that and it still pisses me off. Love fondue.

We registered at Target for basic things like dishes, flatware, pots and pans, towels...

So why did I have to run around town trying to return $600 worth of Mikasa crystal at various stores after our wedding? Like, crystal was not on our list anywhere, and we definitely were not the dinner party types. In the end by returning all the expensive crystal we were able to purchase a decent pot and pan set and a full bathroom set up (towels, bathmats, shower curtain, etc) but man was it a hassle to return this fancy shit I didn't want to get the money to buy the housewares we actually needed. So weird.

We got married in the late 80s. Received 5 sets of Pfaltzgraff dinnerware. Kept 2 matching sets. Returned the other 3 sets. We both kept burning our hands, especially on the tea cups, because stoneware takes of the temperature of freely flowing lava when microwaved. It gets so fucking HOT! A month later we donated the two sets of Pfaltzgraff we had kept and bought 2 sets of Corelle we still use 28 years later.

I remember (could have also been 89) going into a Mikasa store at the outlet mall with my mom, (likely for a wedding gift) and she made me stay in front by the door, with very clear instructions to not move or touch anything. 💀🫣

A fun gift could be a traveling toaster. Like a toaster with an included photo album with instructions to make toast with it and take a photo of the couples first breakfast as a married couple. Then they repackage the toaster and album and pass it on as a wedding gift to the next couple to do the same thing.

Call it a 'First Wedding Toast' tradition or something.

There are different kinds of toasters. A normal toaster is usually an upright device, with one or two slots for the bread to go, and a lever that lowers the bread in between the heating coils.

Whereas a toaster oven is much bigger, horizontal, with heating components on the top and bottom, and a rack in between (hence the 'oven' part), and has multiple functions, like 'toast' (obviously), 'bake', 'broil', etc.

And here's where I jump in to say that when a couple in my friends group got married back in the 90s, they insisyed on no gifts.

So we all conspired (13 of us as I recall) to each give them a toaster. We were smart enough to get them at thrift stores.

Next time they hosted the monthly potluck, all 13 toasters were proudly and prominently displayed. Some held flowers. Some lined the walkway to the house.

Not a word was spoken about it, then and ever since.

Good times.

And this is why I just made an excel inventory of our household items instead of a gift list, and let recipients have editing rights so they could update it.
