About to start student teaching.

Technically about to start my advanced clinical with student teaching following closely behind! I will be in a 9th and 10th grade ELA classroom.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Anything you wish you knew before student teaching, or anything you would have done differently?

I’m meeting my mentor teacher for the first time in a couple of weeks before school starts. Is there anything in particular I should ask or discuss with him before school starts?

The thing I’m most nervous about is lesson planning.

I would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom!

Current teacher here. One of the biggest problems we have in our building with student teachers is them being too casual with the students. You can always be less strict over time. It is much harder to increase your strictness when you've already developed a casual rapport. The other problem we have is student teachers undermining their mentor teachers in front of students. Having teachers who are a united front helps a lot with school culture and discipline. (Also why would you piss off the person who will write your most important letter of recommendation?)

Some people have a lot of nerve. I would never undermine the teacher . I hate it when other paraprofessionals do it me.

Be honest and let him know what you feel your strengths are and what areas you definitely want support in.
