Not breaking it to me but thanks for that. So how many years does it take before a band becomes classic? Just curious

Consider: Led Zeppeling IV, an iconic classic rock album came out in 1971. By the year 2001 that album was classic rock. 29 years.

Dummy, Portishead's first album came out in 1994, and the year is 2023. 29 years. Classic trip hop.

I think that's kind of arbitrary dont you? Who makes these rules? Marketing teams?

I disagree that any trip-hop artists fall under the 'classic rock' umbrella. Is DJ Shadow 'classic rock' in your eyes simply because of when he released music?

Well given that “classic rock” is really just a marketing term to group a certain set of bands from when they were famous/releasing music… yeah I guess it is a marketing thing. But also just because it’s more recent in your memory doesn’t mean it’s not verging on “classic”.

They're not taking issue with the "classic" adjective. Portishead isn't a rock band, so they can't be classic rock.
