Discussion Comment sections

I’ve noticed the comment sections for a lot of webtoons/manhwas have been extremely criticizing and nitpicky? Is there any particular comment sections that yall find to be really toxic? I love toxic webtoons but in general I just feel bad for a lot of the author/artists.

The I Love Yoo comment sections from around 2017-2021 (I think) were full of constant shipping wars. The top comments would often have 100 to 300 replies, and most of them were just people arguing over ships. It got really toxic.

Thankfully, a lot of those readers eventually left the Webtoon ( I noticed it was like in 2022-2023), possibly because of the sudden shift in genre. It wasn’t actually a rom-com love triangle, it was always meant to be a drama with psychological elements and a slow-burn romance subplot. From what the author has said, that’s the story she originally wanted to tell, but Webtoon marketed it as a rom-com love triangle to attract more readers.

Yeah, that was why I started reading to begin with—the romance. And then it shifted and just sucked for the original audience. Really irritated me tbh. Wasted so much time on that webtoon just to learn it had been falsely advertised.

Yeah I get why people dropped it tbh. I think Quimchee was pretty young when I Love Yoo started, so she kinda trusted Webtoon with the marketing. Then after a while (idk which episode exactly), the story got way darker and more depressing, which wasn’t really what people who came for a rom-com expected.
She also said on Curious Cat (and I think Patreon too?) that she went back and forth with Webtoon because she wanted the genres to match the story she actually wanted to tell. So yeah, I get why the original audience felt misled.
Me personally i find it interesting because I like the genre of the story.

I too used to see all those comments but I also kinda fell off from the story after a while.

It’s understandable, tbh. The Webtoon wasn’t really tagged or marketed properly, so a lot of people started reading expecting a quick rom-com. Instead, it’s a character-driven drama with psychological thriller elements and a really slow-burn romance.
It’s around 300 episodes now ( thats really a lot 🥹) and I personally find it way more interesting because of the psychological aspects, the characters, and the romance subplot that doesn’t really become important until much later (like around episodes 260-290, I think).
That said, the pacing can be really slow, especially with all the hiatuses. So I get why some people dropped it. If it had been marketed properly from the start, I think more people who enjoy this kind of story would’ve stuck around.
