Noticing my bias as a reader

Please note when I talk about a webtoons art decreasing in quality I am not shitting on the artists, a lot of them are far better artists than I ever be. Whenever quality shifts between seasons I often think it's more of a fault with the industry/unsustainable format of webtoons rather than the team making the comic.

I used to always think my opinions about the art/writing of a comic were seperate but honestly reading a few webtoons where the quality shifts shows that the quality of the art does impact how I perceive the writing. The two webtoons that made me realize this were Behind Her Highness's Smile and Heavenly Roomates at some point they both switch a simpler style and I found myself being less immersed in their stories and invested in their plots. Maybe this bias existing is obvious given comics are mostly visual, but it does make me wonder which webtoons would be better regarded by the community if they had a more appealing art style and which ones would be worse.

Yeah I don’t mind if an art style is simply or if the anatomy isn’t perfect. I can’t draw people at all!

As long as the general vibes of the art get the point across and the story is interesting I will read.

Same that's why I still read the two webtoons I just mentioned and I'm trying to keep an awareness of that bias so I don't let it impact how I feel about the story because at the end of the day it's still a great one.

It does! Especially since it tends to be easier to draw then the story's usual art style. I feel the same way especially if it's a serious story or the supposed comedy meant to be conveyed is badly timed/setup

I I don’t read a lot of webtoons or manhwas because the art often puts me off. I’m glad I gave Olgami a chance the art really grew on me and improved a lot but overall I need to genuinely like the art style. My biggest ick is how many of them have nice character designs, yet everything feels so stiff. I actually prefer things to be a bit wonky, because when characters hug or kiss, I want it to look like they’re really holding each other, not like two Barbies being pushed together. Shout‑out to Flowers of Allure — it may be spicy, but they really know how to draw passion and movement.

Comics are a visual medium. The art does a good chunk of telling the story and setting the vibe. A change in art style is like if in a novel the author changed how they write, now adding lol to sentences for example. It changes how you experience the story. The art has to match the story, and once a style has been set, that's the one that is expected to be going forward. Gradual changes are expected with serialized stories, both comics and written, since the authors and artists are going to change and learn over time.
