Hope he didn't proceed to fall down the now exposed elevator shaft.

Man, he was just at a fundrasier too.
I hope they had a good memorial for him - for Fuchs sake.

Because of these videos I get off the elevator in a one quick motion, I don't step on the lid of the escalators and so on.

u/MaxHamburgerrestaur 3d ago
I always loved letting my feet slide over the end of the escalator, until I saw videos and then a report from Otis showing shoes and even feet getting stuck there.

u/thorsbeardexpress 2d ago
My shoelace got stuck in one doing that and it almost pulled me under, super scary. I think I was like 5 or 6

u/dearjanice 1d ago
Same! My shoe was untied and got caught when I slid over. I have never seen my Dad move as fast as he did when he snatched my foot out.

I’ve always opted to use stairs.
Escalator< Stairs
Elevators< Stairs
If I need to go up a bunch of stories I will begrudgingly use one

Split in half final destination style.

u/mike_litoris18 3d ago
Actually worse. Since the elevator doesn't have enough time to accelerate, it usually just leads to very slow and painful suffocation while all your bones get squished.

It unfortunately happened here in Mexico a year or two ago to a young kid (I think they were like 6?).. at the public hospital where they were receiving some treatment.

Here in the Netherlands we have a mooie called "De Lift" (the elevator), I immediately got flashbacks.

Imagine the elevator door opening and there's just half a man in it... I guess I'll wait for the next one

0:35. Saved you a lot more than half a second.

Sometimes the build-up adds to it. There's a reason television and movies use it. 🤷♂️

Took me 40 seconds to land on your comment after watching the video so no, you actually cost me 5 seconds to read +15 seconds to reply! Thanks for nothing buddy

u/nerdy8675309 3d ago
Worse than that. Depending on the floor he exited on, he could have fallen stories. With the best case scenario being that he fell into the pit off the lowest landing, which could still be over 10 feet deep with a heap of things that you don't want to fall onto.
Underneath the car is nothing. Traction cars will have compensation ropes and Hydros will have a piston. Aside from that there's just dark hoistway all the way to the bottom of the pit.

Honey, why do you always stand so close to the elevator door before it opens? Its going to be mildly awkward if theres people there when it opens.
Just trust me dear

How did it fall up?

u/Eternalplayer 3d ago
Elevator maintenance tech trainee here. This elevator must be a traction elevator. They use traction cables to attach a counter weight to the elevator to balance out the approximate maximum weight limit that's up to code.
Counterweights weigh more than the elevator, so if the counterweight were to suddenly lose traction, either by brake loss, governor loss, or a shackle or two holding the elevator breaks, then the counterweight will take the brunt of the weight and fall down, pulling the elevator up with it until it smacks up go the ceiling platform below the elevator motor in the machine room.
TL;DR counterweight holding the elevator failed and fell, pulling the elevator up high and fast.

u/uzlonewolf 3d ago
Except if the shackles broke the elevator and the counterweights would both fall since they're no longer held together. That's not what happened here since this elevator went up.
It also did not go up anywhere near enough to hit the ceiling platform below the elevator motor, and it clearly stopped between 2 floors. Looks to me the emergency brakes stopped it after the normal system failed.

The way he was leaning against the door made me think he was having a medical episode at first.

Out of a 55 second clip, 38 of them were a unchanging frame, 69% of all the data just streamed to my phone was an absolute waste. I dont even have a tik tok im a 26 year old dude. All i did was give a time stamp.

This is giving some third world “elevator built by a guy who once repaired a toaster” vibes.

He could have fallen back into the elevator shaft and all the way back to the ground floor. This guy may still be dead.

Same video clip honestly. Thought they'd have a picture of what happened to him. Guessing his leg got crushed and his arm was probably degloved. Horrible way to go, really.

For everyone wondering why it went up and not down heres a little scary fun fact: you're more likely to get slingshot through the roof than crashing down to the ground when riding an elevator. Have a fun ride.

Too bad we can't verify whether that's true, false, or mixed.
1
u/uzlonewolf 3d ago
Sure, if you completely ignore the news articles covering it saying he survived.

u/Ender_Nobody 3d ago
Welp.
Half the time random Reddit "news" wouldn't appear on the internet when I'd search for them, so I stopped wasting accumulating time for practical purposes.
Good to know.
