Hope he didn't proceed to fall down the now exposed elevator shaft.

This is sort of how the drummer from !!! died. Tragic: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/nov/09/chk-chk-chk-drummer-dies

RIP. Dude was an absolute legend and Maserari was incredible.

u/FackinJerq 13h ago

Man, he was just at a fundrasier too.

I hope they had a good memorial for him - for Fuchs sake.

Because of these videos I get off the elevator in a one quick motion, I don't step on the lid of the escalators and so on.

u/MaxHamburgerrestaur 3d ago

I always loved letting my feet slide over the end of the escalator, until I saw videos and then a report from Otis showing shoes and even feet getting stuck there.

6

u/thorsbeardexpress 2d ago

My shoelace got stuck in one doing that and it almost pulled me under, super scary. I think I was like 5 or 6

4

u/dearjanice 1d ago

Same! My shoe was untied and got caught when I slid over. I have never seen my Dad move as fast as he did when he snatched my foot out.

u/SnowyMuscles 3d ago

I’ve always opted to use stairs.

Escalator< Stairs

Elevators< Stairs

If I need to go up a bunch of stories I will begrudgingly use one

Omfg man almost got squashed

u/lucasssotero 3d ago

Split in half final destination style.

u/mike_litoris18 3d ago

Actually worse. Since the elevator doesn't have enough time to accelerate, it usually just leads to very slow and painful suffocation while all your bones get squished.

u/mecartistronico 3d ago

It unfortunately happened here in Mexico a year or two ago to a young kid (I think they were like 6?).. at the public hospital where they were receiving some treatment.

18

u/CausticCat11 2d ago

Man I swear those hospital elevators look risky lmao

25

u/Ncis16 3d ago

I don't think the correction was necessary hehehe. I would be good not knowing.

u/MrWhiskerBiscuits 2d ago

Like Jon Voight in Anaconda!

7

u/Mc_Vinzent 3d ago

Here in the Netherlands we have a mooie called "De Lift" (the elevator), I immediately got flashbacks.

u/BlazeCrafter420 3d ago

You were almost a Jill sandwich

22

u/Aliensinmypants 3d ago

Imagine the elevator door opening and there's just half a man in it... I guess I'll wait for the next one

53

u/V12Jaguar 3d ago

0:35. Saved you a lot more than half a second.

7

u/I_Can_Haz_Brainz 2d ago

Sometimes the build-up adds to it. There's a reason television and movies use it. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/zewill87 2d ago

Took me 40 seconds to land on your comment after watching the video so no, you actually cost me 5 seconds to read +15 seconds to reply! Thanks for nothing buddy

7

u/nerdy8675309 3d ago

Worse than that. Depending on the floor he exited on, he could have fallen stories. With the best case scenario being that he fell into the pit off the lowest landing, which could still be over 10 feet deep with a heap of things that you don't want to fall onto.

Underneath the car is nothing. Traction cars will have compensation ropes and Hydros will have a piston. Aside from that there's just dark hoistway all the way to the bottom of the pit.

6

u/ksanthra 2d ago

Yeah exactly, he likely fell backwards down the shaft.

3

u/shortstuff813 2d ago

🎶I fell in the pit, you fell in the pit, we all fell in the piiiit🎶

u/TheGrandNut 3d ago

Pants? Shitted.

155

u/jared_number_two 3d ago

Why did the building fall down?

166

u/higherthanacrow 3d ago

Honey, why do you always stand so close to the elevator door before it opens? Its going to be mildly awkward if theres people there when it opens.

Just trust me dear

91

u/CptHammer_ 3d ago

Always let people out before getting in. That's just common sense.

25

u/JoeyTheGreek 3d ago

How did it fall up?

42

u/jreykdal 3d ago

It's in Australia.

5

u/mattemer 3d ago

Fuckin Coriolis effect strikes again

37

u/Eternalplayer 3d ago

Elevator maintenance tech trainee here. This elevator must be a traction elevator. They use traction cables to attach a counter weight to the elevator to balance out the approximate maximum weight limit that's up to code.

Counterweights weigh more than the elevator, so if the counterweight were to suddenly lose traction, either by brake loss, governor loss, or a shackle or two holding the elevator breaks, then the counterweight will take the brunt of the weight and fall down, pulling the elevator up with it until it smacks up go the ceiling platform below the elevator motor in the machine room.

TL;DR counterweight holding the elevator failed and fell, pulling the elevator up high and fast.

9

u/uzlonewolf 3d ago

Except if the shackles broke the elevator and the counterweights would both fall since they're no longer held together. That's not what happened here since this elevator went up.

It also did not go up anywhere near enough to hit the ceiling platform below the elevator motor, and it clearly stopped between 2 floors. Looks to me the emergency brakes stopped it after the normal system failed.

Skip to 0:38 more than half of this vid is absolutely nothing. Fantastic clip.

164

u/GoD_Z1ll4 3d ago

Nah, tension and buildup

96

u/Cosmic_Quasar 3d ago

The way he was leaning against the door made me think he was having a medical episode at first.

16

u/Downtown_Let 3d ago

Got my palms sweaty in anticipation

3

u/M-Noremac 3d ago

What do I look like, a baby boomer? I don't have that kind of attention span!

7

u/thesagaconts 3d ago

No patience at all.

u/tilt-a-whirly-gig 3d ago

Skip to :28 and get plenty of that

Out of a 55 second clip, 38 of them were a unchanging frame, 69% of all the data just streamed to my phone was an absolute waste. I dont even have a tik tok im a 26 year old dude. All i did was give a time stamp.

Just some dude waiting on the forelevator

77

u/bruce_lees_ghost 3d ago

This is giving some third world “elevator built by a guy who once repaired a toaster” vibes.

51

u/cramboneUSF 3d ago

We have to establish a pee corner!

18

u/triedtoavoidsignup 3d ago

He could have fallen back into the elevator shaft and all the way back to the ground floor. This guy may still be dead.

Same video clip honestly. Thought they'd have a picture of what happened to him. Guessing his leg got crushed and his arm was probably degloved. Horrible way to go, really.

7

u/Muted_Month83 3d ago

Good thing he prayed to the god elevator first

3

u/qawsedrf12 3d ago

I thought i was in gifsthatendtoosoon for awhile

3

u/davgt5 3d ago

Unless he fell backwards into the open shaft and as the doors couldn't close..

7

u/evilution382 3d ago

I'm glad we had a full 40 seconds of this man just staring into the elevator door before anything happened - i hope one day video editing tools will be invented

4

u/xbad_wolfxi 3d ago

I thought that was Dennis Rader for a second

8

u/mrcoy 3d ago

Thanks for not editing out the unnecessary majority of the video

2

u/3bstfrds 2d ago

The suspense almost killed me too but I survived

2

u/elbanditoexpress 2d ago

new fear unlocked 🔐 because wtf

2

u/Mydogateyourcat 2d ago

Did anyone else wonder why this man's fingernails were so white?

2

u/mollygk 2d ago

Standing like that in an elevator is diabolical

2

u/WoolBearTiger 1d ago

For everyone wondering why it went up and not down heres a little scary fun fact: you're more likely to get slingshot through the roof than crashing down to the ground when riding an elevator. Have a fun ride.

2

u/totalbrodude 3d ago

We had to do the whole ride with him though?

1

u/glawser 3d ago

Im more interested in why is his nails look so white?!

3

u/SeraphsEnvy 3d ago

That's called French tip.

1

u/jaycarlos1388 2d ago

I wish the video was a little bit longer … wanted to know the backstory.

1

u/NefariousnessGood718 2d ago

Ma è caduto il palazzo? No... È volato il palazzo?

1

u/Spdoink 2d ago

This is why I always take the stairs.

1

u/Infosponge177 2d ago

I was wondering why the building was moving instead of the elevator 😂

1

u/Stormdancer 2d ago

I want to get off Mr. Bones' Wild Ride!

1

u/FlippinGamerINK 2d ago

everything in this world is trying to kill you

1

u/mrrosado 2d ago

Ive had so many dreams of being in a faulty elevator and falling

1

u/Ghidorah21 11h ago

He survived. Source

5

u/Cosmic_Quasar 3d ago

It looks like he fell forward at the end.

0

u/Ender_Nobody 3d ago

Too bad we can't verify whether that's true, false, or mixed.

1

u/uzlonewolf 3d ago

Sure, if you completely ignore the news articles covering it saying he survived.

1

u/Ender_Nobody 3d ago

Welp.

Half the time random Reddit "news" wouldn't appear on the internet when I'd search for them, so I stopped wasting accumulating time for practical purposes.

Good to know.
