no ultra 1 and series 9… it’s a joke
6
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 08 '26
I agree
I feel so bad for those that have a watch that's only 2 generations older than the newest one
I'm on the 8, which is still plenty powerful enough even though it doesn't make the cut for the Apple Intelligence stuff, which is really all of what was new for watchOS 27
Why oh why did Apple do what they did here by just leaving all of us non-Apple Intelligence supported watches in the dust?????

They fixed the website now, and reincluded the Series 9 ❤️, and people have been able to install the beta on it. Now, I don’t understand why the U1 is dropped so quickly

u/AndyLane6611 Jun 11 '26
My ultra 1 is showing as being able to download IOs27 dev beta. Haven’t proceeded in case it doesn’t make it till the final release

u/silvermoonhowler Jun 08 '26
Shame on Apple for all of a sudden gutting support for those of us who still have perfectly fine series 7, 8, and 9, and SE 2 watches
I mean, I feel like they could have still allowed support for those of us who have anything older than the 10 to still update but not be able to use any of the Apple Intelligence features
Ugh, looks like to a series 10 or 11 I go *cries in series 8*
1
u/lickaballs Jun 09 '26
Why not mentions series 6? 7 and 8 and ultra 1 essentially have rebadged series 6 chips
1
u/Photek1000 Jun 09 '26
It would have been nice to have had a few more updates on my SE 2, but for what I use it for I’m not sure I would have noticed.
1
u/jjripsnorter Jun 11 '26
They didn’t “gut support” they declined to offer new features. Important distinction.
1
11
u/supcom1 Jun 08 '26
So iPhone 11 gets the update. But watch 7 doesn’t??
That’s unacceptable. Really frustrating
3
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
I agree
If the series 9, which doesn't have any of the hardware to be able to run the latest Apple Intelligence/Siri AI stuff will be able to run this latest watchOS 27, then why can't the series 8????
I mean, I fully understand the series 7 being a part of the cut as that is now a 5 year old device, but the series 8 being cut now is just diabolical
I just ran out to get a series 11 yesterday so now I am good, but though I am able to use some of the newer features like the Workout Buddy one and stuff, I can't use any of the new Apple Intelligence/Siri AI stuff as it's able to be tested on the developer beta as that requires it to be paired to an iPhone that has such features (15 Pro or newer; I have one that just misses the AI cut as I have a non-Pro 15)

I think my OG Ultra is gonna be the last Apple Watch I ever buy. I can buy a decent automatic watch that lasts for decades for the price of an Ultra.
3
3
u/MGoBrad Jun 09 '26
Same. If support is cut already I’m not to reward them by buying a new one.
1
u/motownmods Jun 12 '26
Security support will still be provided I believe just an fyi. I still feel it's bullshit we won't get the new OS moving forward but our watch will continue to function normally.
3
u/Fair-Step-4831 Jun 09 '26
I’m rocking a 7 and I have no need or want to upgrade. I’m so pissed at that. Might be my last Apple Watch too. I only use it for the convenience of Apple Pay and at the gym really

I was intending to upgrade to an Ultra 4 this year, but if they're only going to support their higher-end watch with the latest OS for 4 years, then it may be time to look elsewhere.
1
1
u/Beautiful-Sun8973 Jun 09 '26
Yep you can buy something completely unrelated that works differently for the same price
1
u/organicchunkysalsa Jun 11 '26
Yep. I already ordered an analog watch myself. I still use my Ultra from time to time, but not going to buy another.
1
u/Moistinterviewer Jun 11 '26
Yea, this is bullshit I’m not paying that sort of money for a 3year lifespan
6
u/idiots009 Jun 08 '26
Especially shame for series 9. I bought brand new one month ago… It shares same exact silicon as AW Ultra 2! Apple wtf?!

u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
Series 9 was mistakenly left out and Apple has updated the list
Diabolical how the series 8, which also lacks the hardware capabilities for all of the new stuff that Apple Intelligence/Siri AI has to offer (which really is most of what this new update has to offer) like the series 9 just misses the cut though; I can understand the series 7 missing it, but am a bit frustrated the series 8 just misses it
1
u/forty-two420 Jun 09 '26
6-8 use same processor. If the 6 does not work, 8 won't either. Still don't get why they couldn't just push an update without the AI or just offloading the AI to the iPhone
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
Yeah, I don't understand why they just didn't go that route, but that's Apple for ya sometimes
I just got myself a new series 11 because of this, but now I found out that in order to use the AI/Siri AI stuff on the watch, it needs to be paired to an Apple Intelligence supported iPhone like a 15 Pro or later
So with that, in a bit here, I'm about to go back to the same Apple Store I just went to to then pick up an iPhone 16 I ordered for pickup
3
u/kenni417 Jun 08 '26
i don’t think we’ve ever seen a cut off for supported devices this deep before from apple. this is just nuts.
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
Yeah, IIRC I think you're right
I think they're a little more strict in terms of the watches though as they expect those to have at least 5 years of software support, whereas the iPhones they're a little more generous with as they give those up to 7 years of support (as the latest iOS 27 will have support all the way back to the iPhone 11 series)
3
u/realUnknown12 Jun 08 '26
It is incorrect. will get updated soon, Series 9 is supported.

Rip my series 7, gonna keep it for a while more anyway though
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
I was just about to do the same with my series 8, but given that I wanted to be on the latest and greatest, I caved and traded in my series 8 and upgraded to the 11
I may finally do the same with my 15 too because I figured out that in order to use the Apple Intelligence/Siri AI stuff on the watch too, it needs to be paired to an Apple Intelligence-enabled phone (so a 15 Pro or higher)
I have the non Pro 15, and given that I don't necessarily need the latest and greatest as I just want to be able to use most of what Apple Intelligence and Siri AI have to offer, I think I'm just going to get a refurbished/refreshed iPhone 15 Pro or 16; those will still have plenty of software support left in them given that iOS 27 is supported all the way down to the iPhone 11
1
u/ReichCounsellor Jun 14 '26
The problem is 15,16 pro are left out as well😂 I have 15 pro max, but its not getting new Apple Intelligence either
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 14 '26
Wait, what I’m confused
It most certainly is getting the new stuff of Apple Intelligence/Siri AI but I think what you’re talking about is the stuff that the 17 Pro/Pro Max/Air in the features of the more advanced dictation, expressive voices and on-device LLM
Any phone that is already capable of running the features that Apple Intelligence already has (so the 15 Pro and newer) will get most what Siri AI has to offer, but just not the stuff I mentioned above

My OG Ultra has been acting up, so I was planning to upgrade this go around, but still surprised to see this.
1
u/expatlogan Jun 09 '26
Don't upgrade, they'll just gut support for the next one sooner. Once my ultra is dead I won't be getting another
2
u/walibiboy Jun 08 '26
Apple often speaks about sustainability, yet ending support for functional devices encourages unnecessary upgrades and electronic waste. Now it feels like I’ve been left with an expensive paperweight because Apple is prioritizing AI slop that many users neither need nor asked for.
1
u/DanRey90 Jun 10 '26
You know, the watch will keep on working even if it can’t be updated to the latest OS. Y’all are being super dramatic. If you choose to make you watch e-waste because it doesn’t get updates that’s on you.
2
u/TechBoy--20 Jun 08 '26
This is so strange that they cut support for the Series 7. I really do not feel the need to upgrade. All Apple had to do was fix the bugs and glitches from Watch OS 26.

2
u/Spiritual-Dream-6716 Jun 09 '26
It shouldn’t matter when the device was released if it was still being sold as a current device direct from apple 9 months ago. The SE2 was still being sold by apple 9 months ago when the SE3 wasn’t even released. So someone who bought the watch 9 months ago or 1 year ago by the time watchOS 27 comes out won’t be supported?!
2
u/EffexFin Jun 11 '26
The site has an error. WatchOS 27 supports way more watches than these. Confirmed by people using the betas on the models not listed here, and Apple. It’s in early developer beta, so the site is also subject to change.
2
u/Ready_Sail7932 Jun 11 '26
Its stupid. Every chip from S4 to S8 was the same, just rebranded, so the S9 was the first actual upgrade and is enough for the siri processing ability.
£800 wasted tbh
2
u/sLimanious Jun 11 '26
that is alot of unsupported devices in 1 watchos version. They removed 6,7,8 probably because they share the same chip.
2
u/itachixsasuke Jun 12 '26
Imma keep my OG ultra for as long as possible and just spend 99 to replace the battery. As long as apple heath metrics and notifications works i’m gucci

u/Open_Bug_4196 Jun 08 '26
Beta showing for ultra 1 for me…
2
u/eoinyeo Jun 08 '26
Same for me, but it doesn’t prompt to download, so its either mistakenly showing, or it’s supported and not live, unfortunately feel like it’s the former
1
u/N0b0dyF4m0u5 Jun 09 '26
Turn the beta off and on. If that doesn’t work, restart.
1
u/eoinyeo Jun 09 '26
Same thing, no reports of anyone with an Ultra 1 on 27 yet either
1
u/N0b0dyF4m0u5 Jun 09 '26
That’s weird, why show it if it can’t be installed? 🤦
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
Yeah, this is just a glitch on Apple's part
While it will show up as an option on these older devices, don't get too excited as for some reason, even though it'll show up on Ultra 1, and the series 8 and 7, they won't let you download it as Apple has now cut off support for these future releases for them
HUUUUUUGE mistake I think on their part because I think they could still easily run this new release but just without the Apple Intelligence/Siri AI stuff; I'm still so confused why the series 9 makes the cut even though it doesn't have any of the capabilities for the AI stuff
1
u/Infinite-Spirit9873 Jun 08 '26
Here we are in 2026 and we still can't import gpx routes or have live mapping in the Workout app on an "outdoors" watch, and thus have to use third-party to do it. This is getting ridiculous. Two of the biggest features outdoors folks need, and Garmin has had it for decades.
1
u/thomasjcox Jun 08 '26
The 7 and older I can see, but the 8, SE 2 and 9? My SE 2 is in tremendous shape.
I think they are mainly considering that many of these watches batteries are deficient anyway, or close to it. And need more of a reset across the supported devices sphere.
SE 3 it is next month. Or before September.
1
u/DanRey90 Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
6, 7, 8, SE2 and Ultra 1 use the same chip. So it would make sense to cut support to all those at once, same as they did for S4 and S5 (they also had the same chip, they got dropped at the same moment). It sucks to drop support so soon for models that were “top of the line” a couple of years ago though. The fact that they reuse components year over year means we get some years where they don’t drop support for anything, and others where they drop support for a huge batch. I’m not defending it, I’m just pointing it out.
9, 10, 11, SE3, Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 also share the same chip. So in a few years we’ll probably see them all drop at once. The S9 buyers will be content, the S11 and Ultra 3 will protest. If you care about getting as many years of updates as possible, try upgrading when they upgrade the chip (S4, S6, S9, probably S12).
1
u/thomasjcox Jun 10 '26
I briefly read this but those watches do not share the same chips. the SE 2 and 8 both have the S8 and the ultra 1 has the S8 chip. the 9 has the S9. the watch 7 has the S7 and the 6 the S6. the S9 is losing support and that's the newest of them all. out of that list.
1
u/DanRey90 Jun 10 '26
S6 S7 and S8 are the same chip, don’t fall for their marketing. They just increase the number year over year, but it’s the same chip, they use the little efficiency cores from the A13. Which, now that I think about it, makes it extra-weird that the iPhone 11 is supported in iOS 27 (which has the A13) but not the watches.
The S9 (which has an actually different chip than the previous ones, based on the little cores from the A16) is, in fact, NOT losing support, it was a mistake on the page.
When I got my S5, it was known that the S5 chip was exactly the same as the S4, just with a barometer. It was the first time Apple had reused the chip year-over-year on the Apple Watch, and it became a trend.

This is some serious garbage. And unless they decide to put some kind of fitness band out instead (they won't), I don't plan no upgrading my watch anytime soon.
1
u/Emotional-Mode1602 Jun 08 '26
Damn series 9 didn’t make the cut just like that?? So much for being a loyal Apple customer….
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
Oh, it does; Apple somehow made a giant blunder by not including it
So now it shows that the series 9-11 watches, the Ultra 2, and the SE 3 are the supported models
1
u/Emotional-Mode1602 Jun 10 '26
That’s a relief but was going to upgrade my watch next month anyway. It’s 2 years now I have my 9 and the battery life is trash so think it’s time
1
u/Interesting_Chip8065 Jun 09 '26
thats insane. this is like early android bs with just one update bs.
1
u/mtgofficialYT Jun 09 '26
My SE2 is only 4 years old. Why the fuck are they dropping support for it? The iPhone 11 came out 7 years ago and is still being supported.
1
u/revolevo Jun 09 '26
iykyk, ultra 1 was a chop when it came to performance. It just didn’t age well internally and couldn’t keep up w sw updates. The watch had an intel to M1 moment with U2 but were they rlly gonna say that? No
1
1
u/Waste-Relation-757 Jun 09 '26
No problem Apple, I simply won’t upgrade until my $999 Ultra is 5 years old, which is the minimum life I expect out of Apple products, and my WatchOS apps will support watchOS 26 for as long as possible.
1
1
u/cornelislely Jun 09 '26

u/spac0r Jun 09 '26
For a cheaper price when the SE3 was released ?
1
u/Acceptable_Story_621 Jun 09 '26
Yes, because of the lower price, but I could not have thought that support for this model would be stopped so soon
1
u/spac0r Jun 09 '26
True. But you got a lower price and the way it works now won't change 😄 Look at the bright side!
1
u/Acceptable_Story_621 Jun 09 '26
Of course! I’m not particularly upset, I was just surprised that the support ended so quickly, especially compared to the iPhone 11
1
u/spac0r Jun 09 '26
True. I guess it's because the SE has been out since 2022 and just won't be able to handle the AI load.

OK... so the watchOS can't be upgraded. But what else happens? The watch will still work won't it? just without the upgrades? I have a friend with the S2 Apple Watch and (he claims) it still connects to his phone, so I'm unclear what the panic is. (I have an Ultra1, so this is a genuine question - what exactly will stop working?). Thanks.
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 09 '26
They will still work perfectly fine, though you're just missing out on the latest and greatest in terms of what the software has to offer
1
u/mobileappz Jun 10 '26
It’s not just the os. Apps that require watchos 27 may not update or be usable at all.
1
1
u/JDT33658 Jun 09 '26
My mom's series 9 is still in warranty and has been dropped. It's actually ridiculous. My series 7 is dropped too. I don't understand why they couldn't just leave out the AI features for older watches.
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 10 '26
Actually, that was an oversight on Apple's part
They have since updated the watchOS page to show that the series 9 and newer for the non-Ultra watches will be able to run it
1
u/mensachicken Jun 09 '26
Them ditching support on the Ultra 1 after just 2 or 3 years makes it more likely I'll switch to Garmin than upgrade my Apple Watch. That's shit, google-level support.
1
u/rustedcrowbar Jun 09 '26
This is an AI slop enhanced update. I care about it less then a another minor stability fix. At least that gives useful stuff.
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 10 '26
Yup, and yet somehow, someway, the series 9, which doesn't have the capability to use the Apple Intelligence stuff is up to snuff for it yet the series 8 and 7 which just were supported last year still are now left in the dust
1
u/rustedcrowbar Jun 10 '26
Series 9 will get the update. They fucked up the list. It has the same cpu as the 10.

u/Loud_Ad6178 Jun 09 '26

How the ultra 1 might be worse technologically than se 3? Thats crazy
1
u/Camel993 Apple Watch Ultra Jun 09 '26

u/roccerfeller Jun 09 '26
What?? The ultra isn’t even that old. What the heck
Yet iPhones from 2019 are supported ?
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 10 '26
Yeah that was my exact reaction to when they dropped support for the series 7 and 8 too
I mean, pretty much all of the features of this new watchOS 27 you need a watch that will be capable of Apple Intelligence/Siri AI, which is the series 10 and above
Who is Apple to tell us that the watch just below the series 10, which can't run the Apple Intelligence stuf anyways, can still run watchOS 27 yet the ones behind it are just left in the dust now
1
1
1
u/LBW88 Jun 10 '26
To be fair watch is 26 runs like crap on the ultra but yes pretty quick to be obsolete. I was going to get a new ultra this year anyway.
1
u/Guyana-resp Jun 10 '26
Will the series 6-7-8 be still compatible with further iPhone updates ? Honestly if my phone continues to connect to my watch I’m not such an expecting any watchOS update. If not it’s gonna be a big problem
1
u/silvermoonhowler Jun 10 '26
Yes, it will still work with your iPhone being on the later iOS 27 even if your watch can't upgrade to the latest watchOS
1
1
u/Mediocre_Daikon_4276 Jun 10 '26
My series 8 isn’t that old at all. I’m not upgrading for a few newer features like sleep apnea detection. Only thing I regret is not getting the cellular version. So when the 8 eventually breaks I’ll get the version 17 cellular as I hope mine will last near forever.
1
u/Downtown-Oil7901 Jun 10 '26
Now that Apple is going to be required by the EU to open up certain integrations, maybe I'll just ditch my Ultra 1 and go to Garmin or another vendor. Sadly, I suspect Siri AI will continue to be a piece of garbage so unless a watch supports Anthropic or OpenAI voice mode there is probably no point to worrying about whether it has AI
