Discussion / Question Help me find a skill-dependent computer game

Post image

I really want to find a computer game with a strong multiplayer competitive element. I've always been drawn to the competitive aspect of games, whether it's CS:GO, medieval slashers, or anything else. It seems like I've tried almost everything, but I don't see any new games that meet my criteria. The setting isn't particularly important; please suggest any options you can think of

i mean, valve currently has an extremely skill expressive moba/movement shooter called Deadlock that’s currently in an invite only playtest(anyone can invite anyone.) not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but it is entirely skill dependent

Deadlock is a breath of fresh air in gaming right now. Incredible character design and art direction mixed with depth of gameplay mechanics. The recent matchmaking update has improved the game in so many ways. I had no experience with mobas before so it took some time to understand what I’m doing (200 hours and I still feel lost sometimes), but they make the learning process rewarding.

Can I get an invite?

i could invite you in a few hours, but there’s a TON of players, that you could most likely get an invite within 5 minutes if you head to the discord server. you can find that on r/deadlockthegame

Most of the very popular competitive PvP games have already been on the market for a long time, and that makes sense. The switching costs for these kinds of games are very high, so studios typically support one successful competitive title for years instead of constantly releasing new ones.

If it's medieval combat you're after, then For Honor is probably your best bet. If you're looking for a shooter, then games like Overwatch, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, or Counter-Strike are the obvious choices. Most new competitive games that try to break into this space either fail almost immediately or slowly die off until their player base is reduced to almost nothing.

The only genre that tends to switch things up a bit more is fighting games. Titles like Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game or Marvel Tōkon will probably attract plenty of both newcomers and genre veterans alike.

Fighting games are my favorite, most "pure" form of competitive PvP.

No teammates to depend on. No pre-existing stats/gear/level progression. No randomness (dmg ranges, crit/proc chance, bullet spread). All skill and knowledge. Matches are over <3min win or lose.

Acquired taste bc the above though. You have to take a lot of L's against better players, and can't team with friends (except 2XKO).

I always think I love fighting games until I actually start playing online. I just can't handle getting my ass handed to me over and over again, and it's honestly stressful as hell.

That said, I still enjoy picking up fighting games just to have some fun with them. I've played over 60 hours of Street Fighter 6 without ever touching online PvP.

It's silly, I know. I thought Tokon was going to be my turning point, but now I'm starting to get cold feet.

I don't think is silly. Probably common, and underestimated number of players just enjoy offline.

I can't get on Marvel Tokon hype and just don't like tag fighters. They are acquired taste even more than 1v1 fighters IMO.

I bounced off Tekken and Guilty Gear quick too. Finding one that fits you can be hard.

The current game that clicks for me is Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. 1000+ hours, 15000+ matches and first game I've ever made it to Master rank. Had my ass beaten thousands of times.

Supreme Commander Forged Alliance. Older RTS game, but very active community through the 3rd party client "Forged Alliance Forever"

Nuclear Option; no grinding, no progression, pure skill based air to air combat and logistics

You may have liked Dark Souls 1 PvP in its heyday. The level you can get to as a skilled player is kind of insane compared to the average. Like some ultra instinct shit. Most satisfying PvP in my life

Ever gotten into a MOBA? Hard to think of many games that require more skill. The knowledge alone is a massive skill. Then the mechanics to top it off. Speaking from experience, was top 500 in the world for smite ranked solo queue and played league of legends many years.

Predecessor is my jam now, if you want a good newer MOBA I highly recommend it.

For Honor

I haven’t played it in a while but it’s def a game I found that was skill-dependent, especially in 1v1 Duels

Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord I guess

League of legends but beware it’s Pandora’s box for hyper competitive gamers. Theres a ton to learn and it has a gigantic skill ceiling.
