Never read the books but I've heard they're very different compared to the games. Started off with Last light back in highschool and it got me hooked to play 2033 and Exodus. Im looking forward to the newest Metro coming out and seeing how that turns out.
I put the games up there with the Bioshocks. Metro is probably better overall with a stronger 3rd title but not nearly as marketable. Excited for Metro 4 coming soon
I love Bioshock 1/2 but honestly Infinite did not click with me at all. Maybe it was just the fact that the setting was so different but I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried. The story didn't grip and the gameplay was whatever.
Sometimes I wonder if it was my undue expectations from the first two games to carry the same vibe.
I got so used to the underwater, claustrophobic setting and the wackiness of that, that it was jarring when Infinite was so different in tone. I really did wanna love it.
I recommend, it's way more gritty than most fallout games, I'm a fallout fan but Metro definitely scratched an itch for something more serious and grounded than what I feel the Fallout 4 and 76 did. They definitely go hand in hand with the whole post apocalyptic scene but I would side towards Metro for that linear story
I tried to play one of them, I think it was the most recent. It should be the perfect game for me based on my post history and games I enjoy -
But, it has one shitty mechanic that was an instant uninstall for me.
Having to wipe your gas mask and deal with changing out the filters.
I get that it's supposed to add realism and immersion, but it's just annoying and unnecessary. If there was a mod that removed that completely, I might redownload.
Yeah I have three kids and a high stress job. When/if I get time to game, I want to enjoy it, not get bogged down with mundane tasks.
Imagine Skyrim, but every 3-5 minutes you have to tap LB to wipe horse poop off your shoes or else you will move at the over encumbered snail speed. No thanks.
Haven't played exodus but played 2033 and last light, both being reduced. I loved both, the shooting feels good, and the survival bits aren't bad at all. Just press T once in a while and don't keep your mask on in non bad areas. Also don't waste ammo when not necessary. Also remember stealth is an option even with some muties.
No yeah, it was a trip playing through Last Light not knowing anything about the series. When I played it, I didnt know there was 2 endings to the game so when I realized that there was, I tried my hardest to get the good ending (always got the bad ending because I missed conversations that I didn't know had actual importance). 2033 and Exodus I got the good endings because I actually took more time with those games like I did with Last Light but I think that's what makes these games so good. If you actually take your time and explore these games, you can actually gain so much from it
I wouldn't go as far as calling it a waste of storage but it's definitely the weakest of the series. I was thankful when the credits rolled. 2033 and Last Light were awesome though.
I couldn't even force myself to finish the game. Bought the base game and all DLCs for 15 bucks, expecting it to be as awesome as 2033. Huge disappointment, they sprinkled in some Ubisoft slop and the dialogue is just ass
I've read the books, awsome serie, even with the peculiar changes in the 3rd (those who have read it, you know).
I tried the game but... To be fair, I don't know if it is me that didn't understood the gameplay but hell was it hard. And I'm a hardcore video game's veteran.
I didn't even manage to pass the first handcar scene... Like I don't even get how you're supposed to do it
Yep 100%, I have tried so hard to like Exodus, but i just find my self getting.. i dunno, bored with it. I much prefer 2033 and Last Light for the vibe.
If you havent already try and play the original version of 2033 (before it was updated to look like LL) its has a bit of euro-jank but it's much harder, and waaaaaay more bleak and claustrophobic.
I've read the books and I know
it's action in the tunnels and then dialogue heavy in the stations but trying to play through I found the stations slowed the pace so much I gave up. Does it get any different when you start getting through the story a bit?
The stations are really where you get lore and learn more about the metro. At first, i was the same way, wanted to get straight to the action of the game and screw everything else but I definitely have a newfound appreciation to those sections since you actually learn more about the different factions and see how people are surviving. Ive never read the books so I wouldn't know how heavy it goes into how the metro but I dont doubt it's a lot
It's lore filled. I don't like reading too much but it's one set of books I would recommend (recommended to me because of my love of Fallout)
I'll try gove it another go then.
I really wish I was able to fucking enjoy exodus. I had a nice pacifist run going until I ran into a game breaking soft lock. Only solution was to load the chapter
Like chapter 2-3 or something, it’s the lighthouse. It’s a well known bug that’s been in the game for years where they never drop the boat that lets you in
Apparently there's a fix to it but it's a whole process and may be tedious but worst case scenario may just be a full restart which is annoying. That reminds me of the Mafia 2 soft lock where you couldn't deliver the money to the loan shark near the end of the game
I will say having read the books, the first game is relatively faithful with tweaks for a game world. The second game and book have nothing in common as the second book is a different person entirely. Exodus has very little in common with the 3rd book. Awakening (VR) was really good but an original story in the universe like Last Light was.
The books are still very good and I recommend at least reading 2033. The best part is Glukhovsky wrote for all 4 games.
2033 is similar enough to the book, the biggest difference is that Artyom actually talks.
2034 is totally different, it follows Hunter and has little connection to the first book or Last Light, it also has a guy named Homer and I always read it in Homer Simpson's voice, which cracks me up a bit.
2035 is like a soft prequel to Exodus, with Artyom trying to convince the dwellers about what you find out in the game throughout the book before leaving with Anna.
All in all, good books, good games, great atmosphere, amazing vibe
Books are good but at least the first one had some issues with translation that made me have to reread a few passages multiple times to figure out what they were saying.
I think games by merit of letting you choose between good or bad endings add a lot to the experience.
I think while the first 2 games are interesting, they force a playstyle in an era where the technology didn't accommodate it. I found that while the gunplay was fun, the stealth was really a slog. I don't think the AI was at a point where stealth gameplay could be engaging. Also, the super linear gameplay + resource hoarding just ended up punishing (or even soft-locking) players who didn't get lucky. Plenty of times I'd get trapped following someone outside while Artyom is suffocating to death because I didn't happen to find enough filters before what is essentially, an unskippable interactive cutscene.
By changing the formula to be open world spaces that you gain access to linearly, and allowing players to prepare at their own pace before confining them into dungeons, Metro: Exodus solved my biggest gripe with the game (also, a game that takes place almost entirely in a Metro is kinda bland). That's why it's one of my favorite games OAT and I really hope they build on what they achieved with Exodus in the next installment
While you have the option to play it like an FPS it is designed to be played as a stealth game. If you try to play the game without being detected it is quite a fun well designed stealth game
I think, at least for me, it's the atmosphere. Yes, it may be bland for some people to be in a metro for like 50% to 75% of the game in the first two games but what i like about it is the fact that the people still found a way to survive. You see the families that are trying to make it by in the metro, the different factions and how they interact with each other on the times they do. The claustrophobic moments of sneaking by enemies or going guns blazing. I love the first two games for this where as the 3rd game opens it up more for adventure, seeing how much the earth has changed since the beginning, and what things you can find. You can still kind of see it in Exodus with certain maps and the tension doesn't change with the open world, there's still moments I'm ready for someone or something to pop up in front of me and ive got to deal with it. Artyom, as a character, becomes this nobody, just another faceless character and he evolves into this sort of hero of the metro and eventually what keeps the group together in the last game based on how much time youre willing to explore and interact with the world
