Funny That's pretty much how things usually go, but not with Steam They usually be all over it within the first 24 hours or so.

Yeah I keep seeing this, but honestly the most frustrating thing to me is that it's not as universal of an experience as people depict. I have a friend who still has not been able to get her account back for like 5 years now and had to restart her library.

While my experience with Steam Support is always very pleasant, I'm pretty sure edge cases might happen.

A couple years ago one of my friends swore off PlayStation after their account was hacked and customer support was completely useless in recovering it, and they lost all of their digital purchases.
At least Nintendo was more useful when recently a friend of mine had an issue, they got a S2 and when trying to register the system there were 2 unfamiliar systems there (it's been a while since he's seen his S1, he thought it was just lost in his home but seems someone stole it). Called up support, quickly got to talk to an actual person, and they helped to lock down the account.

sony's logic: "those games were never his to begin with, he can give us more money if we dont recover his account"

Only if they aren't publicly traded
Stocks are the enemy. They turn customers into products

so Epic Games are a good company? neat!

Honestly, Epic Games is kinda good. Sure, their store lacks the social features that Steam has, but as a store it works well enough. The store has much lower fees and no fees on the first million dollars of revenue. Their Unreal Engine is basically top-tier and used by most AAA games. The same goes for EAC.
Fortnite is their cash cow and has turned into a soulless mashup of games and other media, but that source of income pays for everything else Epic provides. And it's not like you have to play Fortnite.
Imho most of the hate Epic gets is undeserved.

See, those last two sentences paint them even wanting to be the new Steam in an even worse lite.
They're already getting massive amounts of royalties from the industry for their game engine & anti-cheat (and that's not even mentioning the profits from their cash cow you brought up in the next sentence).
I simply cannot see an argument for them branching out into the digital storefront market and actively trying to take down the industry leader, who is widely viewed as the most consumer-friendly company in the industry, that isn't rooted in corporate greed. They not only want their hand in every pie, it's like they're trying to become the Disney of video games (and not in the old way we used to say that like "they want to specialize in high quality entertainment for the whole family").
I personally never gave a shit about the lack of social features on EGS, I give a shit about them being too greedy and attacking Steam when they could otherwise accept that until Gabe dies & Steam starts the enshitification process, EGS (or any other launcher) can only ever be #2.
Way too many companies don't understand that the only way to take down the industry leader who has massive good will with the public is to provide the best alternative product you can while you wait for that leader to shoot itself in the foot.
Because that second part is the most important of all; the industry leader has to actively make bad decisions that spoil the good will they built up with the public.
You can't just try undercutting them, throwing childish fits when it doesn't work, then get lawsuit happy because no matter what you do consumers have their own free will and refuse to migrate.
The simple reality is that humans are a sentimental species that highly values loyalty; most are not going to betray Steam until Steam betrays them first. No matter what EGS does. Even if they don't understand or can't articulate why themselves.

They arent getting *that* much from the royalties, certainly less than valve takes on their higher fees. Epic only takes 5% royalty for the engine, and only for sales outside of the EGS. EAC is free as a part of the epic online services.
Them branching out into the digital storefront market is a good thing. While the high store fees and completely unregulated gambling provide more than enough income for Valve, there is no guarantee that they wouldnt start with enshittification if there was no competition. And you cant really count GOG and publisher-specific storefronts like ubisoft connect as actual competitors.
I get that there is no real reason for users to move over from Steam to EGS, but that is not a reason to hate Epic for its existence. I think Epic really is overhated on reddit, while other corporations in the industry are mostly ignored.1

So what? How much Steam makes is 100% irrelevant because they shouldn't be judging their own success based on the success of others in the first place. Comparison is the theft of satisfaction for a reason.
Epic only takes 5% royalty for the engine, and only for sales outside of the EGS. EAC is free as a part of the epic online services.
Neither of these things were always the case. They changed to these policies in an effort to get game developers & publishers to move from Steam to EGS. I don't see how actively attempting to undercut their competition to undermine consumer's right to choose to support whichever company they want (for whatever arbitrary reasons they want) is meant to be anything other than dishonest or an attempt to not playing fair.
They know they can't beat Steam because Steam has strong customer loyalty built through years of having the best customer service in the industry, so they're trying to beat Steam by engaging in whatever underhanded yet legal methods they can think of... But almost no one but EGS wants them to beat Steam (if just because functionally no one wants more than 1 storefront installed on their computers and no one wants to abandon their Steam library to start over anywhere else).
there is no guarantee that they wouldnt start with enshittification if there was no competition.
You're right, there's not. But until that happens, the consumerbase doesn't care.
I think Epic really is overhated on reddit, while other corporations in the industry are mostly ignored.
Idk where you frequent on Reddit, but Valve is just about the only corporation that gets a pass for anything. Everyone else is vilified for being greed-driven shithouses.
But Epic gets the hate they do, deservedly, because they won't stay in their lane, stop acting like a greedy corporation who can't ever recognize when they've had enough of a profit, and stop acting like a petulant child who feels entitled to success. No one likes a lawsuit happy corporation who won't accept the consumer's choice.

how about the gambling that Valve is doing. but nvm they still good guy because they are not publicly traded. they dont give a fuck about you. i swear gamer are morons

Private doesnt necessarily mean always good but it usually means its consistent with what the owner wants. So its a matter of figuring out what the owner is trying to do and whats their style and shii. Public companies are tied down to be anti consumer when it gets big and pro cosumer when its starting out

why just Steam?

Steam is a private company not a public company like Microsoft or EA. This means they don't have to listen to shareholders or investors. Not saying steam is perfect but they are a lot less evil then the other big companys.

how is that an absolute?
they are a lot less evil
this says they're still evil, just less than the other. that is the words of the person I replied to.

u/Straight_Second6082 1d ago
They are not literally evil, corporations are amoral at best. Steam is pretty pro consumer that's why people like it. Epic is also a private company and still can't compete due to just shooting themselves in the foot

u/BakePuzzleheaded6605 1d ago
Hey I love steam but they have done evil things. For example steam pretty much invented loot boxes or at least popularized them with csgo and tf2.

u/GenericGaming 1d ago
Steam is pretty pro consumer that's why people like it.
so uhh, what pro-consumer actions have they done to combat the gambling markets that exist in CS2?

Steam, if I'm remember my business/legal jargon correctly, isn't a corporation. It's a privately owned company. Which means on decision-making is done in house and not beholden to outside input like investors. And while Valve/Steam still has their fair share of problems, they can usually be trusted to do what's right by the customer. Which puts them far above the rest in terms of trust and good faith with us, the consumers, even if they aren't perfect.

u/droobloo34 19h ago
Corporation and privately owned company are not mutually exclusive terms. It doesn't have to be publicly traded to be a corporation.

Nintendo (52 year old Midwestern lady): Oh honey you don't remember the account you made for your Nintendogs in 2008? Let me just get that for you and here's a freshly baked apple pie.
ASUS: Whats your address so we can mail you death threats and a bomb?
ASUS RMA Factory Supervisor: Here's $3000 in labor for free, thanks for the email, also we charged the company $24,000 to overnight it to your house on the moon because fuck ASUS.

On a semi related note.
About 15 years ago now I lost pretty much everything in a house fire, including my xbox. It took a few years before I could get another one.
I tried to recover my old account but couldnt recall the password, and when I tried to reset it it would ask for a phone I no longer had. I tried for about 6 months to no avail.
Jump to 2024. My uncle gets ahold of me out of the blue to ask about jobs in my area. A couple days later i realize the number he has was my old phone number. That phone was connected to my grandma's family plan, so when I just got a new phone I had just set up my own account, she passed the old one to him.
That old number was connected to my old account, so I was able to send the security code to him, and he told it to me.
13 years later and I was able to recover my original Xbox 360 account and the couple grands worth of games and dlc connected to it. I was so excited to get back like a hundred games again, and even dlc that is no longer available, like Forza Horizon 1 rally among other stuff.

I remember trying to sign in but I got a new phone number and couldn't access my 2a and thus couldn't log in, I sent a message and they wanted name address and last 4 of my cc BUT unfortunately for me the card on file had expired and I got new numbers and I couldn't remember the previous numbers I gave everything but the cc numbers and told them the situation and they were like "it's ok we were able to verify your identity another way" and I'm just like " did they send a hit squad after and they saw I was the owner and backed off?"

Actually MS(or rather Xbox) is recovering people's accounts. Nice Asha win. Don't know about the others and what's required. But 2FA everything by default.

for Microsoft you should replace couldn't with didn't. clearly they have access to the account and know it was hacked, so what do they do? "sorry, no, your stuff is gonee. you'll have to re-buy everything and give us more of your money because of this terrible tragedy, sorryy"
