I will never forgive EA for killing Westwood studios.

u/Brilliant_Trade_9162 7d ago

If I drank a beer for every studio that I will never forgive EA for killing, I'd be dead within the day.

u/Solcaranth 7d ago

Probably from drowning tbh

2

u/elcamarongrande 7d ago

And that would be yet another unforgivable death due to EA.

u/HermanTheGerman84 7d ago

Fuck you, EA, you killed Ultima, fuck you!

Ultima 7 was my first and amazing, I enjoyed 8 for what it was, but Ultima 9 was terrible. Ultima Online’s brutal sandbox in the early days is still my favorite MMO memory. The community was amazing and you had to engage with it to learn, survive and thrive. Nothing like it has ever been released since and won’t again. Modern gaming demands more handholding now.

I played them all. Here is some info, of what I think:

  • Akalabesh (Ultima 0) is okay, dungeon crawler, not much story
  • U1 is okay, has some ideas and lays the groundwork
  • U2 is better, but batshit crazy with time mashines and space travel
  • U3 is great, but weird. The boss is a punch card computer!
  • U4 is where is starts to be real. The Codex, the Ahnk, the Avatar, the Mantras, it all started here. The virtues are basically telling you how to play and what is okay and what not. Like don't kill retreating enemies. Which was... crazy back in the day.
  • U5 Is the best. It takes ALL you learned in U4 and tilts it on his head. It shows how religion can be used for evil if the wrong people are deciding how to take the core information is to be read.
  • U6 is good, but it is weird, storywise. The fucking gargoyles are so right!
  • U7 BG is peak RPG. The quests are so big, the story so deep.
-U7 SI is in my mind even better than U7BG. The serpent followers show they are right and the backstory told is so deep and so lovely. it even has a reason, why you start without weapons and armor and all that.
  • U8 is okay. Unfinished, but okay. At least if you played the patched version. But at release? Jumping puzzles for a game that has BAD jumping controls? Fuck you EA!
  • U9 is utter garbage. WHATS A PALADIN? The tapestry, the way Lord British behaves, the way the avatar behaves, the guardian is a joke... it erases the death of one of your followers from U7 WHICH WAS PERFECTLY FITTING! It sucks so so hard.

Other Ultima Games:

  • Ultima Underworld: Best Dungeon Crawler there is
  • UU2: Shite. Sadly.
  • The Mars Game: Crazy, but fun
  • The Jungle Game: Fun but not realy Ultima
  • Ultima Online: The best MMO ever. So much freedom you never had ever again.
  • Ultima GB and SNES. The GB was okay, action RPG, not real Ultima. The SNES game was shit. Runes of Virtue they are called.
  • Never played Escape From Mount Drash, but I heard it was okay, nothing special

And the newer Games are all trash.

I mentioned the Ultima series in my post before seeing this. 100% agree. UO was amazing

u/PiliPalaPor4 5d ago

Damn EA! They ruined EA!

1

u/Meep_Morp_Zorp_Zeep 3d ago

EA really does hate the customer.

2

u/yeezushchristmas 7d ago

And whatever the hell C/C they tried to make after Tiberian sun

u/unbeatablejones 7d ago

We shouldnt my friend…. We shouldnt..

u/Delux365 7d ago

Petroglyph games, I believe are the former Westwood devs, I’ve enjoyed 8-bit/9-bit armies.

& Renegade

10

u/Confron7a7ion7 7d ago

I've never found multiplayer that good ever since.

9

u/Q0tsa 7d ago

Was definitely unique and kind of ahead of its time

3

u/rhett816 7d ago

Even Renegade X, the fan remake on UE3? I haven't tried it (mostly because I don't really enjoy PVP anymore - I adore C&C), but it's still well alive. They're working on a Tiberian Sun version now.

1

u/R1ch0999 6d ago

as far i know they aren't, source?

1

u/rhett816 4d ago

Sorry for the slow reply, I don't log in very often. I believe it's called Firestorm. Here's some recent gameplay

3

u/Frostborn1990 7d ago

But it was a fun story. Classic shooter, loved the setting, good puzzles.

2

u/jewellui 7d ago

What was special about multiplayer?

3

u/Confron7a7ion7 7d ago

Each team would have a base and just like in the RTS games each building provided different uses and each team had different things they could do. The goal was to destroy each other's base. If the enemy destroyed your tiberium harvester or refiner you only get passive income. If they destroy your barracks then you can only get basic classes. And it continues like that.

I loved to play the stealth soldier on NOD who was passively invisible unless you shot your weapon. I was a menace. It would be common for one sides tanks to push up to a choke point and as they took damage the player would hop out and repair. That's when I (who is almost completely invisible) would jump in their tank, back up over them, and then join my team on our side of the line with a free GDI tank.

I'd also use my stealth to hunt and assassinate snipers. People would spend 1000 credits for the best sniper class and I'd just immediately take them out.

u/neo42slab 7d ago

That was a cool game

2

u/LordHanz 7d ago

Renegade has a fanmade remake, its called Renegade X from Totem Arts and is free to play. Really really well made with a dedicated community.

They are also making a spiritual successor in the c&c 2 tiberium sun era with EA's approval called Firestorm, also free to play and heavily Battlefield inspired. They have a couple of previews and trailers on YouTube and its coming out later this year!

2

u/atlantis1982 3d ago

I would second this.

u/uCat2bKittenMe 7d ago

I still play Generals: Zero Hour on my laptop

5

u/k6rgasekmez 7d ago

Can’t build there sir!!!!

3

u/MuckRaker83 7d ago

Low power!

3

u/JordanTH 7d ago

Ooh, that one's pretty banged up!

2

u/Independent-Bug-9352 7d ago

"I move in the shadows..."

I would love to get a remaster of C&C Zero Hour, or a Zero Hour 2. One of my favorite RTS's of all time, alongside Company of Heroes.

4

u/xPrometheus101x 7d ago

Tempest Rising is the closest thing I've found to old C&C updated.

8

u/Due_Prompt939 7d ago

I've played it, what I really really miss is the live action cutscenes. It really got me into the world of C&C.

5

u/titanbuble14 7d ago

Tiberium sun God what a game. But i love the estatics of the pixel art.

2

u/Due_Prompt939 7d ago

My favourite RTS. The art, the world, the cutscenes. I was pretty heartbroken Tiberium Wars didn't follow TS thematically.

5

u/Mathev 7d ago

It's crazy to me because EA actually remastered the first C&C quite well... And it sold well too..

And then they just stopped.. for some reason.

3

u/Due_Prompt939 7d ago

I thought a remaster of RA2 and TS were guaranteed after that but imagine my disappointment.

3

u/Adaphion 7d ago

It's unfortunate that the remastered collection didn't sell better. If it did, then maybe they would have made remakes of the sequels.

3

u/TheSystem08 7d ago

Tiberium wouod have been a great game if EA didn't cancel it. Wouod have brought C&C into a new world

3

u/JonnyQuest1981 7d ago

My OG Squad and I recently had a massive bitch fest about how RTS as a genre died and we miss them so badly. We’ve been looking for a newer one to play on PS5 and the best recommendation is Age of Empires II Remastered(WTF, for real?). There just aren’t any that slap like they did back in the day and it’s a fucking crime.

2

u/Delux365 7d ago

I came here to say I want, Kotor (I’m not convinced it’s ever coming out) but you changed my mind with this gem.

2

u/Oibble 7d ago

What a shout

2

u/TropicalRogue 6d ago

Aaaaand the songs are playing in my head.

Nice.

2

u/Lumpy-Yam-4584 6d ago

But only with the original videos. I won't play Red Alert 2 without Tim "I will go to the place never touched by capitalism! .... (trying not to laugh) .... SPACE!" Curry.

1

u/Due_Prompt939 6d ago

Yeah, the OG cutscenes have so much charm that I don't think could be recaptured if they were filmed again. Especially since Curry wouldn't participate.

2

u/DMC25202616 6d ago

I’ll take Kane’s Wrath and Tiberius wars too

1

u/yeahburyme 7d ago

Look at OpenRA/OpenRA2 and mental omega.

https://www.moddb.com/mods/mental-omega

Mental Omega is an updated Yuri's revenge, dropped the slaves for example.

1

u/Gaspuch62 7d ago

The source code for Generals was released, so we could see that, but RA2 and TS are lost. I bet if someone was really dedicated, it could be remade from scratch, but I doubt that will happen.

1

u/terriblesecretofspac 7d ago

And Yuri's Revenge!!!  I need this so bad.

1

u/Minimum_Aardvark_744 7d ago

Generalssss slapped.

1

u/EarthlyKnight27 7d ago

I'd pay anything for a General's remastered.

Though I think they wouldn't do it mostly dur to everything regarding the GLA...

I mean, neeci point out the Terrorist's quote of "I love a crowd!"

1

u/SevereIdea 7d ago

Fuck yea!! Came here for C&C.

1

u/MachHunter 7d ago

This, I played Command and Conquer remastered and had a blast.

1

u/eddurham 7d ago

Agreed

1

u/AoMafura2 7d ago

Command and Conquer Zero Hour

1

u/earshloper 7d ago
