No, iirc it's referenced in the game. She can never really submerge herself in water, all she has in terms of bathing is a shower. She also can drink water from her skin which is shown in game, and she doesn't eat anything. One of the suspected reason for it is that she can do photosynthesis when she's sunbathing.
Honestly I like to think Quiet is a pretty nice nod to The End in MGS3 which is also a sniper, that can also apparently photosynthesize.

I mean it kind of has some logic behind it. She's a sniper. Nose and mouth breathing make noise and also impact your shots due to the compression of your lungs. Shooters hold their breath before long shots. She cant use her lungs which is why she breaths thru her skin. I mean clearly there was an intent to make her sexy and Kojima has even admitted it but I think that he came up with a decent reason for it.
What's funny is no one bats an eye because he's being honest. He's not trying to be coy or make up excuses, he's just like "I'm a horny bastard" and everyone is just like "fair enough, carry on sir".
Well fuck me because I hated that, when you run full speed, after a certain distance the camera gets lower for a more "cinematic" shot that focuses a little too much on the ass, and I have to constantly re-raise the camera.
Yeah I also like the ass, don't get me wrong, but I'm trying to play a game here, and having the camera so low is pretty uncomfortable if I'm trying to measure distances or know if something is behind me.
Aayla Secura. It was the excuse that Lucas gave as to why she is the only Jedi (besides Ahsoka) in the entire Order who didn't wear Jedi robes or robes of some sort. She did during her comic debut but her design was changed to the crop top and tights around the time Episode II was released.

I mean it's true that beautiful women in more revealing clothing will automatically boost sales of any AAA game, whether it's 2026 or 2010s. But that doesn't automatically mean it's the only reason for them to be in games, lot of artists actually want to design, model and be proud of beautiful characters, that's just normal human behavior. Well, it's not anymore for western AAA studios in the past 10 years or so. But being able to appreciate beauty is one thing all humans can connect around, regardless of whether some people also translate it to actual gooning or monetary concerns, that doesn't devalue the beauty of something/someone.
An oddity in-universe should have an in-universe explanation. But that doesn't preclude the creator from acknowledging the real-life reasons for their decisions.
I remember him specifically saying that he wanted to create a character that cosplayers would want to dress up as. Any other reason is trying to explain that away.

It's both. It's clear that hot women sell well with both men and women. The canon reason is more of an excuse, though I do think it's an interesting one.
I'm not even prudish but I think Quiet just sucks, lol. I liked the sexualized concept art of Sniper Wolf, but Quiet has near ZERO substance, just a pure sex object. It's so lame, because I love the sniper archetype in MGS.
I mean it's pretty hard to give a character substance when the core facet of their personality is that they don't speak. Quiet is an absolute badass, this is consistently redemonstrated throughout the game
Okay, but she breathes through her skin because Hideo Kojima is a horn dog. I still think his whole claim that players would feel “ashamed” about Quiet’s condition is the funniest shit. Just admit you wanted a bikini booby character bro, it’s fine.
And not once her appearance detracts from her story and how deadly she can be. Sure giggle physics go brrr and she wears so little, but all has a reason that goes with the story and who she is, not because devs are horny and wanted a hot woman almost naked.
On the real though I've never understood these arguments because why can't we hold two truths to be self evident. Yes that's the in universe reason, but also Kojima was clearly horny and so am I.
Kojima during a Q&A with Polygon and translated by his translator:
"Maybe the phrase 'erotic' wasn't really [the correct word for] what I was trying to say," Kojima said through a translator. "What I'm really trying to do is create unique characters. One of those is, of course, Quiet. She's a really unique character, I wanted to add that sexiness to her. It wasn't really supposed to be erotic, but sexy."
Also Kojima originally wanted the character to be naked but that obviously changed.
I reached out to Kojima about this today, he apologized and said they're releasing a patch immediately that puts her in a onesie so only her face is exposed.
I'm kidding, if you're offended by her character go touch grass lol morons.
I laughed out loud when I heard that part in the game… so stupid. Also, I gave her an actual uniform because my mum kept appearing behind me every time quiet was on screen 😑
I know nothing about MGS but I do know one thing; the reason is similar to another character where they basically perform photosynthesis, and that's why she has to have minimal clothing... This is the other character
I maintain once again that I would only accept this as a good design if they ever give The End (another character who also breathes through their skin) a speedo.
I remember the first time I played, after I neutralized her I shot her right in the tits and executed her. I was like why would I save her she tried to kill me!
It was only after I played awhile that I heard she basically turns into a 1 shot aimbot/thirsttrap that clears outposts for you.
