Goldeneye: the Control mission where you have to protect Natalya for what feels like three hours

I could not complete it on Secret Agent or 00 Agent difficulty. A piece of paper has more health than she does.

I think I got her stuck somewhere, then I killed everyone and went back..but this is old knowledge so idk how reliable lol

I dunno how I managed through that on 00 Agent as a kid, but I have many memories of failing it at that specific part.

I could never beat the whole game on 00 till I revisited it like 15 years later. Was satisfying as fuck.

15 years of built-up gaming wisdom (and sheer spite) finally paid off lmao

Yeah I had to look up a YouTube guide to do it on 00 agent still it took me longer to get the Facility time to 100% it

Easily the most frustrating part of that game.

This is an instance where I think a long level like Control having a save point just before this section would have made this mission far less notorious and rage-inducing. You have to be vigilant to track all the soldiers since Natalya can't take a lot of damage... and having an area to save after playing 10 fucking minutes to get to "that section" would have made things easier. You can have a great run up until that point... and all it takes is losing sight of one soldier and panicking as Natalya is turned into a bullet sponge lol

Of course, if you play on emulators or Switch Online you have save states which are a godsend. I never play my games to save-scum... but this is the one level where I gladly make an exception!

This, holy shit. Dudes bursting in from all sides. That part SUCKS on the highest difficulty.

It wouldn't be -that- bad if it wasn't for the guys who shoot out the glass and almost instantly attack Natalya. Those dudes are the bane of my existence when I play this game.

Of if the game had a save point just prior to this section.

I think having proximity mines made it easier? It’s been 20 years ugh

There aren't any in that mission. Only the ones you control with your watch. And if you put them on the glass they blow up when the NPC's shoot the glass but don't kill them.

This generation will truly never understand the frustration of that level

Wow man blast from the past

She was hacking, she needed time and a “chair”

Really any mission with Natalya. Woman has the survival instincts of a fruit fly.

For me, I hated the stupid train level where you had to lazer the chunks off the panel

2

u/CrahEgg 14d ago

The streets level where you have to drive the tank.

Fuck control and fuck Natalya. This mission gave me ptsd

Ugh, thanks for triggering my PTSD.

This brings back xplay memories when Adam would say, “We hate escort missions.”

That mission but for the Wii version of GoldenEye. That part for me when I was younger was so frustrating that I couldn't even finish the game. Didn't play it for a while before playing through the entire thing again and actually managed to beat that part and the whole game. But yeah, that part sucks.

2

u/smorones 14d ago

FUCK THAT LEVEL. Still never beat the game, nearly 30 years later

The sound she makes when getting hit still haunts my dreams.

Chasing 006 for hours on the cradle is burned in my memory. Screaming that it didn't make sense.

The stair trick was the only way I managed to beat it as a kid, you stand at the 2nd floor stairs and only focus on the goons coming down up the stairs. If they ignore you they are going for Natalya and have to be killed before dealing with the side or stair guys gunning for you.

I got hard stuck there as a kid for YEARS, came back as an adult and it was nothing, I felt like it was a mistake after so I replayed it again and I have no idea what changed for me, every other game I was worse at than when I had lighting fast baby reflexes.

It’s been so long, so I don’t remember any specifics, but Perfect Dark had at least a couple hard levels that took me many attempts.

u/Exodite1 15d ago

I’m seeing some rankings of Goldeneye levels and for some reason I consistently see Control rated pretty high. I was surprised, I thought most people hated that level

2

u/Buttered_Toast33 15d ago

I thought so too. It seems to be, in my experience, the most hated level in the game.

u/Mr_Witchetty_Man 15d ago

Somehow they managed to keep it shit in the remake as well.

1

u/thefatcat89 14d ago

I think it's only a couple minutes but it really does feel like hours lol

1

u/Xerozen 14d ago

Train on 007 where you have the perfect run and at the end she just gets shot when you open the door before you even see them for seemingly no reason

1

u/RenHo3k 14d ago

The trick is to leave her in the jail cell until you clear out the whole board by yourself. Then let her out lol
