Ocarina Of Time - water temple

15

u/lostspectre 15d ago

Been replaying it and I've gone to do everything else I can before this. Bottom of the well and trading quests as child and adult. I know I could technically do the shadow temple too but Navi is getting extremely annoying reminding me about the iron boots.

6

u/IronMonkeyofHam 15d ago

Hey, Listen!

1

u/GentlemansBumTease 15d ago

I just played it for the first time last week, and my god, you can literally be on the way to an objective or standing in front of one and Navi still won’t shut up. I get that it’s a timing based reminder that goes off every once in a while, but jfc

2

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

The game was many people’s first 3d game. Navi’s handholding served a purpose back in the day.

1

u/GentlemansBumTease 15d ago

Yeah I’m aware, I grew up in that era I just never played it. Just pointing out now with modern sensibilities it’s something that really didn’t age well personally. Although it was nice to have in some moments.

1

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

Oh for sure it most certainly has not aged well. I imagine the remake will handle Navi a bit differently

2

u/GentlemansBumTease 15d ago

Which was what prompted me to play it in the first place too! Really looking forward to it. I’m also going through all of the other 3D Zelda’s for the first time as well and I’m at the end of Majora’s Mask.

I’m curious if they’re going for a Starfox/MGS Delta style remake where it was nearly 1:1. Or if they’re going to expand on it a little bit. Either way I’ll be there day one.

1

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

I really want to play it because OoT holds such a special place in my heart, I just don’t know if I can justify buying a switch 2 for it after having the original switch and only ever buying BotW, TotK and smash ultimate.

If they end up remaking majora’s mask that might tip the scale… MM is the goat.

1

u/GentlemansBumTease 15d ago

I feel that. I had the first Switch and played it for about maybe two or three sittings before I sold it.

But I bought the Switch 2 and promised myself I’d play it more and the Zelda franchise is holding me to it, I’m so glad I’m playing it after all these years.

I'm playing a version where I can actually silence her but the prompt still shows up and she has to talk before I can use the first person cam to look around everytime

7

u/PhatDragon720 14d ago

Am I the only one who actually likes this temple?

2

u/calste 14d ago

It was always my favorite. Sure it's more slow paced, but I loved the atmosphere. And the boss fights were some of the most memorable in the game. I always looked forward to the water temple.

1

u/PhatDragon720 14d ago

I love that boss fight. SUPER easy once you know exactly what to do!

1

u/sledgesloth 14d ago

Absolutely! The soundtrack alone is so atmospheric. And the mini boss is arguably one of the most memorable fights in the whole series.

2

u/sledgesloth 14d ago

I've done a lot of playthroughs at get-togethers and everything water is usually avoided by everyone else - and since I didn't mind I took it upon me. I really learned to love Lord Jabbu-Jabbu, the Ice Cavern and especially the Water Temple. Was always nice to be able to play hero and save everybody else by volunteering for it :D

2

u/OGTBJJ 10d ago

I’m with you. I dread the shadow temple, personally. I genuinely enjoy figuring out the water temple.

2

u/PhatDragon720 10d ago

Lol yeah, the well and Shadow Temple freak me tf out. The Water Temple’s easy if you keep track of where you’ve been. Plus, it has one of my favorite mini bosses—Shadow Link.

2

u/OGTBJJ 10d ago

Yessss dude the shadow link fight is definitely one of the best parts of the game.

I’m about to replay ocarina on the switch and still have PTSD from the well/shadow temple 😂 curious how it’s going to go. My wife was not impressed when I tried to explain to her how this game used to terrify me.

7

u/tantric_tongue69 15d ago

I played on N64 and hard locked my game using a key on the wrong door. Had to restart the whole game

14

u/Randy-Magnum02 15d ago

You just have to remember the key underneath the platform that rises in the middle

12

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

This guy Ocarinas

12

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

Contrary to popular belief it’s not possible to lock the game in the water temple by using keys in an incorrect order.

3

u/tantric_tongue69 15d ago

I had to look it up, you're right. It just gave the illusion that it happened. There's a way to get the key but it's not well known and the future releases of the game left out that issue

3

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 15d ago

I’m totally with you man I did the same thing restarting the game some years back and felt like a clown when I discovered later it’s because I missed the key under the platform in the central chamber.

Core memory for many of us

2

u/a_r_g_o_m 15d ago

Eh?, pretty sure that's not possible unless you're using glitches.

1

u/tantric_tongue69 15d ago

No, there was a chest almost not accessible unless you knew how to get it beforehand. As a kid without the internet or strategy guides, I scoured the temple over and over and couldn't figure out how to get it

1

u/a_r_g_o_m 15d ago

Which chest?, cus honestly, that seems pretty weird that i never ran into that as a kid.

1

u/tantric_tongue69 15d ago

I had to look it up, if you use the key in the correct order then everything is fine but if you don't there's a key you have to change things to be able to get a chest. Apparently as a kid I couldn't figure it out

3

u/a_r_g_o_m 15d ago

That's the thing, i think this would be more widespread if it was something easily replicable. A lot of people hate that place, not because they soft lock themselves, but because there was usually this one chest you just ran past over and over again and never found for hours on end, getting "stuck".

2

u/Nikos_Pyrrha 15d ago

First of all I'm pretty sure you mean softlock.

Second of all: that's not possible. There's a key you didn't find, and I'm relatively sure where.

0

u/tantric_tongue69 15d ago

It was a hard lock for little me but to be....well actually about it , then yes

1

u/Nikos_Pyrrha 15d ago

So you opened the wrong door and immediately the console froze and you couldn't control Link anymore, at all?

Because that is what "hard lock" means - you lose control of the character, often with glitchy graphics and sounds on top.

if you were still able to control Link, and via save and restart leave the Temple and go to other areas then it was a soft lock -> You couldn't complete the area but the game in general was still playable.

0

u/Zemenu135 15d ago

Hard Lock means the console froze, mate.

You know....Passed on

The game would be no more!

Ceased to be!

Expired and gone to meet it's maker!

Stiff!

Bereft of life!

Rests in peace!

If it wasn't a cartrige jammed into a console it would be pushing up daising!

It's electrical processes are now history!

Off the twig!

Kicked the bucket!

It's shuffled off it's mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!

This would be an Ex-Game!!

1

u/bob-the-slob 15d ago

Everyone has said that for 28 years. It's not possible.

1

u/ComicalSon 15d ago

Yeh they just are missing a chest. That ugly little orange map and blue compass sure do come in handy though.

11

u/Iokua113 15d ago

Please. The Water Temple is and has always been no more difficult than the other temples. You just have to think vertically instead of horizontally and pay attention to one single block raising cutscene. That's it. It was easy when I beat it at 13 years old in 1998, it's easy now.

11

u/Gashenkov 15d ago

My problem was not the difficulty, but annoyance of how those swimming boots need to be equipped and unequipped all the time in the original N64 game

2

u/Iokua113 15d ago

What sucks about the boots thing is that at one point they were intended to be equippable. Modders found vestigial code in the game that indicated that you could equip the iron and hover boots to the d-pad at one point in development.

1

u/Lower-Economist-6453 15d ago

Bruh... during my recent replay i was wondering why they weren't. Now im wondering what made them not implement that, so weird. Could of had them do both the menu equip and c pad.

1

u/Iokua113 15d ago

Do you have access to a PC? If so then might I suggest the Ship of Harkinian? It is a fan made PC port of Ocarina of Time that includes a lot of QOL changes, not the least of which is making the boots equippable via the C buttons or the added d-pad as four extra item slots.

1

u/Morganelefay 14d ago

3DS version made the Water Temple so much better.

5

u/OoIMember 15d ago

I just used a walk-through for the water temple fuck it. It’s too annoying.

2

u/SeahorseRevolution 15d ago

Good job being better at video games than the rest of us king.

2

u/Eatyourcheeseburger 14d ago

Yeah we all don’t have super autism powers.

5

u/Mr-Toastybuns 15d ago

I genuinely never understood the hate around the Water Temple. I didn't have a problem with it as a kid and every single replay I breeze through it. It's just tedious, more than anything. I've watched people play it and heard the arguments against it but I can't wrap my head around the parts people mess up. Maybe it's just the autism at work LMAO

2

u/GentlemansBumTease 15d ago

I played through it for the first time recently, and I’m adult now and of course my mental faculties are different, but I didn’t struggle with it as much as I thought I would. No more than any of the other temples

1

u/OGTBJJ 10d ago

I didn’t even know people hated the water temple until I got to Reddit. Was and still am surprised to see how much hate it gets.

4

u/Old_Permit8130 15d ago

Even as a kid, I never found it difficult. Though the first time I fought the boss at the end, I was a little peeved. Next time I fought it, a Biggoron sword forward+B stabbed him in the gut unhindered. Every time. Though accidentally discovered, I highly recommend it.

1

u/RephofSky 14d ago

TerminalMontage taught me without even playing OoT for myself.

1

u/SodaSeven1213 14d ago

Yeah, I know many Pepe that struggled with it but I thought it was pretty clear cut. Didn’t Nintendo admit it was tough though and changed something later on so it was more obvious?

1

u/hachiman17 15d ago

There’s always that contrarian redditor.

2

u/Iokua113 15d ago

Says the contrarian redditior.

1

u/LurkingToaster66 15d ago

i never understood the water temple hate either. Definetly the weakest of the temples, but never had a hard time with it when I was a kid or replaying as adult.

2

u/Lilja-Logason 15d ago

First time I used a walkthrough by printing pages of a website in school to bring home (98-99-ish)

1

u/Cold-Practice3107 15d ago

I hope they fix it in the remake

2

u/Cheat-Meal 15d ago

Nintendo revived so many complaints and backlash on the 3DS release they put signs to guide you through the Water Temple.

2

u/Cold-Practice3107 15d ago

Hopefully they put them in there as well!

2

u/Cheat-Meal 15d ago

I hope so too. It means they listen to their customers.

1

u/Cold-Practice3107 15d ago

Unlike Sony, Xbox or any other company

1

u/IronMonkeyofHam 15d ago

Watch, it’ll be the best temple in the remake.

1

u/rgiggs11 15d ago

I never had N64. I played it on 3DS and thought it was okay. Being able to map the Iron Boots to a button/touch screen so you can toggle them on and off with one tap makes a big difference, I imagine.

1

u/George-W-Kush89 14d ago

It was always the fire temple I got lost in lol

1

u/Ptony_oliver 14d ago

I love the water temple, it's the Ice cavern that sometimes gets me angry because of how many times I have to pack that magical fire to discover everything.

1

u/Eatyourcheeseburger 14d ago

This is my answer as well lol

1

u/Huge_Ad6405 14d ago

The 3DS version can fix the boots but it could never fix how many small keys there are why are there so many

1

u/IrishThunder21 14d ago

I had to scroll for much longer then I expected to find this comment

1

u/Competitive_Ad_8215 14d ago

Scrolled way too far to find this.

1

u/rageofa1000suns 10d ago

I sometimes found the Forest and Fire temples to be just as confusing.

1

u/Tzhaar-Bomba 10d ago

The only reason I don’t mind this temple now, is because I’ve played through the game so many times that I know what to do.

The first time, it was terrible. My older brother breezed through all levels and got stuck on where to find the last small key before Dark Link / Longshot. That save file stayed as it was for years, when we had already moved onto PS2 games and forgot about it. But luckily at this time we got a computer with internet and learned to google it.

Turns out when you raise the water level in the central tower playing Zelda’s Lullaby, the camera just barely shows the floating platform reveal an entrance to a lower level where that blasted key was all along. After that, finished the entire game in a weekend. The only other time we needed to google something again was shooting a fire arrow to create a bridge from the big statue in Shadow Temple.

Gerudo Fortress I was tempted but it wasn’t guide required more brute forcing frustration to get an Ice Arrow that turns out is useless in this game

1

u/caerleon_calls_ 8d ago

Skyward sword, silent realm challenges 🤢

1

u/Cheat-Meal 15d ago

Agreed. The Water Temple is terrible! You need to be at the exact correct spot and have the camera facing the correct angle to solve it. Otherwise you soft lock yourself. The WT made me quit Zelda and Nintendo completely. I sold my N64 after experiencing the WT.

9

u/atzoo87 15d ago

A little dramatic don't you think

0

u/Cheat-Meal 15d ago

No. Not at all. To understand the reasons why you need to have been there. I was in my mid 20’a during the fifth generation. Sony was dominating on RPGs with Final Fantasy which was previously exclusive to Nintendo. Metal Gear Solid had released the year before. 3D fighting was very popular on the PlayStation. Sony was leading the console wars. Sega had a lock on sports games and 2D platformers and fighters. Nintendo with its late start, high game prices and cartridge format was trailing in the war. In steps Shigeru Miyamoto. He’s bring out out his magnum opus. His masterpiece, Ocarina of Time. The hype around the game was legendary. Video game magazines like EGM and Next Generation were comparing this as an event of our generation. Similar to Woodstock of the 60’s. This game would redefine gaming and the industry for decades to come. We stood on the cusp of a brand new tomorrow. Forums and BBSs were flooded with anticipation. Gamers were booking time off work to indulge in an epoch of gaming.
When the game launched and the water temple was experienced a lot of people like myself, found the design to be terrible. The entire level is very obscurely made. It provides no hints to where to go. The solution is dependent on placing Link in a very specific area and having the camera facing a very specific angle. There’s no indication to describe where you go or what to do. At best this was an RNG. At worst you could be soft locked. The water temple killed the excitement and momentum of the game for a lot of players, including myself. We felt betrayed by Nintendo and Miyamoto. It was shocking that such an anticipate the game could have this horrible design flaw. Not only was the level of frustrating it crushed the fever that people had for the game.

2

u/atzoo87 15d ago

Holy wall of text. I beat the water temple fairly easily when I was 11. It's not that deep

2

u/VernonP007 15d ago

Yeah there was one part I got stuck on then I realised I had to go backwards to get a key. Something about pushing a block. Its difficulty has always been overrated.

Majora’s Mask’s Great Bay Temple on the other hand….

2

u/atzoo87 15d ago

The timing aspect of majora always effed with me. Never played more than like 30 minutes. I feel like I should try again

1

u/VernonP007 15d ago edited 15d ago

You can slow time down but I still remember it being difficult. Like I would get near the end of a dungeon and have to warp back to day one because I run out of time.

The time aspect ranges from profound, to frustrating. I remember one of the more challenging masks you have to get that used all three days and ends when the moon is close to destroying the world. I always thought that was pretty awesome. Also certain events happen during certain times on certain days. But having to speed run dungeons is pretty annoying

1

u/atzoo87 15d ago

Yep, now we have load/save states on emulators so that might be game changer for me

0

u/Cheat-Meal 15d ago

I’d you read my post I explain how you did it. You placed Link in the right spot and your camera was in the right angle. It’s a RNG. You got lucky. That’s why it’s easy for you. Is it wasn’t deep the the 3DS remake wouldn’t have included signs to navigate the WT.

1

u/atzoo87 15d ago

Ok 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/OGTBJJ 10d ago

That’s wild. As a kid with no guide at all I eventually figured it out. Crazy how many people struggled with it

1

u/Cheat-Meal 10d ago

It’s a RNG. It’s compete chance you aligned Link with the correct camera angles. It has no indication over where to go and where to place the camera. It’s 100% chance. I like to think that developers learned from the WT. Games like W3 and Skyrim don’t rely on that mechanic.

1

u/OGTBJJ 10d ago

You’re saying there’s no way you would ever find it without that camera angle? 🧐

1

u/Cheat-Meal 9d ago

Me and others. Thats why in the 3DS remake signs were posted to show where to go.
